Chinese writer Mo Yan’s Nobel Prize for Literature might ignite an explosion of global interest in Chinese literature and lead to more titles translated into English, European experts say.

“Hopefully, the award means more people will read Chinese literature and more works will get translated,” says Michel Hockx, professor of the Languages and Cultures of China and Inner Asia from University of London. “Many very good Chinese writers have been accepted globally for a long time already. Mo Yan is probably the most translated Chinese writer alive, with at least five of his novels made available in English over the past 20 years.”

Jonathan Ruppin, web editor of bookseller Foyles, says Mo’s win coincides with growing interest in Chinese literature and recognizes the talents of a distinctive and visionary writer. “We are very excited by the fact that English translations of more of his books should now become available,” Ruppin says. He made the comment after Mo became the first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in its century-long history.

As East-West cultural exchange has been booming, Chinese literature has been attracting growing attention in recent years. Hockx explains, “It’s mainly because there are many more opportunities for Chinese writers to visit other countries, to publish their works outside China and to interact with readers abroad. At the same time, more and more people globally are learning Chinese and taking an interest in the Chinese language and culture .”

University of Oxford lecturer in modern Chinese literature Margaret Hillenbrand says, “The obvious reason for the growing global presence of Chinese literature is the growing global presence of China itself. People have come to realize that there is a serious knowledge deficit between China and its international counterparts — in particular,China knows incomparably more about Europe and America than the other way round— and reading Chinese literature is an effective, simple means of solving that gap.”

Raised by a single mother in Hartford, Fred Wright struggled with behavioral problems and was forced to move from one school to another. He even reached a point where he felt like he had nothing to live for.

“I was walking around with a lot on my shoulders” he said.“I couldn’t handle it. I didn’t care about life anymore.” But all that started to change when Wright met Patricia Kelly.

“I was seven when I met Mrs Kelly.I wasn’t used to strictness. I wasn’t used to hearing the word ‘no’”said Wright, now 17.

Kelly, a former soldier and an equestrian (骑手), took Wright under her wing and helped him find hope in an unlikely place — on a horse.

“Wright was like a round peg that everybody kept trying to squeeze into a square hole’’, Kelly said.“He was hurting. He needed a place where he could express himself. The riding field became that place for him.”

For the last 30 years, Kelly has helped children stay on the right track through her nonprofit, Ebony Horsewomen. The program offers horseback riding lessons and teaches animal science to more than 300 young  people a year. By exposing those children to horsemanship, Kelly aims to give them an alternative to the streets and an opportunity to turn their lives around.

“We use horses as a hook to create pride, esteem and healing” said Kelly, 66.“They learn that they have ability. They just have to unlock it.”

“When you teach a child to ride a horse, they learn they are the center of their environment’’, said Kelly.“Once they make that connection, they can change what happens in school, at home and in the community.”

A Shanghai shopping mall recently opened a “husband nursery” where men who are pulled around the shops by their wives or girlfriends can relax and rest from shopping. Do most men hate shopping with women? Forum(论坛)readers share their opinions.

YinsXZ (US)

Hey, that is an absolutely nice idea. I like it. It also makes it easier for women who have lots of bags to be able to drop them off at the nursery for boyfriends to watch over while they return to shop for more! Set it up with wifi too and you have a perfect hang out spot. And most importantly, don’t have to wait for complaints from the woman when I stop to look at computers or tools!

Sunnylin01 (China)

Most women like shopping while most men don’t. Men generally don’t spend hours deciding color, comparison shopping or finding the sale prices. They know what they want, get in, buy them and get out. 10-15 minutes and they’re done. This is quite different from how a woman shops. Going from store to store, trying to find the best ones. The trying will spend hours.

Seneca (a foreigner in China)

Many women view shopping as an entertaining way to get down from high stress levels. My wife is one of those. Stress comes too naturally to her; driving a car, doing her job, dealing with workmates all lead to some rising of her stress level. So shopping ideally happens every day. For me, that amount of shopping is stressful.

Blonde Amber (Ireland)

Some men take hours comparing products, trying things out, finding sales prices. They don’t always know what they want but enjoy just looking. Men can shop the same as women for things they are interested in and spend hours doing it. Equally not all women like shopping and go in, 10-15 minutes and they are done. People are not black and white, and don’t fit into boxes.

56. According to forum readers, which is Not the benefit of opening a “husband nursery”?

       A. Men can escape the complaints from women.

       B. Women can enjoy shopping more with bags left in men’s care.

       C. Women can finish their shopping in a shorter time.

       D. Men can relax themselves when women are shopping.

57. Which saying below can best describe Sunnylin01 and Seneca’s opinion?

       A. One man’s meat is another man’s poison.

B. Joy and sorrow are next-door neighbors.

       C. A good wife makes a good husband.

D. Experience is the mother of wisdom.

58. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph implies that _____.

       A. black people and white people are different in size

       B. people with different skins have different views

       C. people shouldn’t draw general conclusion blindly

       D. shopping is not suitable for all kinds of people

I still clearly remember that day. I was on the side of the road for about four hours with my big jeep. I put signs in the windows that said,“Need a jack (千斤顶).”

As I was about to give up, a truck stopped and a man got off. He looked at the situation, made a judgment and went back to take a jack. After about two hours, we finished the job with sweats. We were both dirty. His wife took a large bottle of water for us to wash our hands.

I tried to put $20 in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so I went to give it to his wife quietly. I asked their little girl where they lived. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in Oregon now, so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. After that, they were going to pick peaches and then go home.

After I said goodbye and started going back to my jeep, the girl ran to me and handed me a tamale(玉米粽子)for lunch. I thanked them again and walked back to my jeep. When I opened the tamale, what did I find inside? My $20! I ran to the truck and the guy rolled down his window. He started shaking his head, smiled and  said in English“Today you, tomorrow me. ” Then he drove away, with his daughter waving to me from the back.

This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly.

When keeping ducks, one has to consider just how many the land will support. Generally the rule is 100 ducks per hectare. If more than this proportion is introduced, there is a risk of compacting the soil, which can lead to muddy conditions for long periods as the rain is not easily absorbed into the ground.

Ducks must be given greater quality of food, especially if regular eggs are desired. An adult duck will eat between 170 to 200 grams of food a day. If the ducks have access to grass and a pond, they will be able to find for themselves approximately 70% of their daily dietary, requirements in warmer months but less than half that in colder times. Therefore, it is important that they are fed enough food, such as grain, every day.

The eggs of ducks as food for humans have a mixed reputation. This is because of a number of cases of salmonella food poisoning in Europe in the 1970s. Although it was never finally shown that duck eggs were to blame, the egg-eating public stopped buying and many duck egg producers went bankrupt. Indeed, there is a risk of salmonella poisoning when ducks lay their eggs in damp conditions, such as on ground that is constantly wet. And commercial duck egg production in France and England, where the out-breaks of salmonella poisoning took place, followed the same standards as those used in hen egg industry, which experienced no salmonella problems.

The salmonella scare was over by the early 1980s, but, at least markets like Australia and New Zealand, few producers wished to risk investment in ducks for fear of problems. No large-scale commercial duck productions exist in these countries. It has thus been left to small producers, and, more commonly, home duck keepers.

28. In cold winter months, how much food does a keeper at least have to supply for 100 adult ducks per day.

A. 8.5kg          B. 10kg         C. 5.1kg                D. 17kg

29. Salmonella food poisoning ____________

A. resulted from consumption of duck eggs.

B. created difficulties for the duck eggs business.

C. occurred all over Europe.

D. was found in both duck and hen eggs.

30. Duck eggs _______

A .have been produced in large quantities in New Zealand since the early 1980s.

B. are more at risk of salmonella pollution than hen eggs.

C. may be polluted when laid in wet conditions.

D. should be kept at 5 to prevent pollution.

31. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage____________

A. It is better to have 120 ducks if you have one hectare of land.

B. Duck eggs have higher standards to follow than any other egg industry.

C. People stop keeping ducks in Australia and New Zealand.

D. The salmonella scare lasted for about 10 years.

Building Trust in a Relationship Again

Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences.    9    Trust is a risk. But you can’t be successful when there’s a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.

Unfortunately, we’ve all been victims of betrayal. Whether we’ve been suffer from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can’t trust anymore.   10     It’s understandable, but if you’re willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.

11    Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.

12    If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there’s a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”. At some point in all of our lives, we’ll have our trust tested or violated.

You didn’t lose “everything”. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life.    13      Instead, it’s a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

A.  Learn to really trust yourself.

B.  It is putting confidence in someone.

C.  Stop regarding yourself as the victim.

D.  Remember that you can expect the best in return.

E.  They’ve been too badly hurt and they can’t bear to let it happen again.

F.  This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.

G.  Seeing the positive side of things doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what happened.

What do literary tourists look for when they visit the British Isles? Often it’s the charmingly old-fashioned bookshops that provide the perfect excuse to read uninterruptedly and to disconnect from the world. Until recently, the trend for fine coffee and high-speed Wi-Fi was considered by some in the city’s bookish crowd to be ruining London’s centuries-old tradition of disconnected reading.

But a crop of bookshops is fighting against crazy online engagement and is creating environments where the real-life, Internet-free book reading is the most effective way to expand your social and professional networks. Leading the fighting is Libreria Books, which is in the company of Tenderbooks, Buchhandlung Wakther, Lutyens&Rubinstein etc., all independent bookshops without high-speed Wi-Fi and coffee.

Mr. Silva of Libreria was inspired to open his shop after experiencing a common suffering for London’s book-lovers—the repeated ring tones of smart phones ruining the peace of his bookshop experience. He wanted to get people reading without interruption. He said, “You can get Wi-Fi anywhere now, it’s not necessary in a bookshop.”

Their mantra(原则) has drawn a wise, brainy crowd. The bookshop should be an escape from an information overload. “ If someone gets a phone call, they leave the shop. It’s the same with the Internet—people just know this isn’t the space for being on line.” said Tamsin Clark, owner of Tender books. And in face of the Internet overload, some stores are proving to be among London’s hottest places.

Mr. Silva said “an old-fashioned space” is clearly appealing to book-lovers. He said his shop has had twice as many customers as expected, with visitors from as far as Australia and China. Faced with a bookshelf recommended by the Queen or surrounded by first editions, who wants to download a morning full of emails?

32. What would literary tourists like to find in an old-fashioned bookshop?

     A. Free coffee.                                                                       B. Social networks.

     C. High-speed Wi-Fi.                          D. Peaceful reading time.

33. Why did Mr. Silva of Libreria decide to open his own bookshop?

     A. He saw the trend of running bookshops.

     B. He aimed at banning Wi-Fi in bookshops.

     C. He was inspired by other bookshop owners.

     D. He had an unpleasant reading in a bookshop.

34. What do London’s bookish crowd think of the Internet-free bookshops?

     A. Outdated.        B. Attractive.           C. Fashionable.     D. Professional.

35. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean?

     A. People prefer reading to being connected.

     B. Emails keep coming in all morning.

     C. You can still work efficiently.

     D. People have no access to downloading emails.

My father is the man I respect most. Strict as he may be, however he never fails to show her care and consideration. Once I broke a neighbor window. Seeing nobody around, I ran away immediately. When Dad came home, he noticed my uneasiness and asked me what has happened. I could only tell him a truth.  Instead of scold, he praised my honesty and then encouraged me to apologize our neighbor. I learned from this incident that not only does Dad take care of our health and he also teaches us what to be good citizens.  How luckily I am to have such a good father!

When your friends suddenly stop talking to you, it can leave you confused on what to do next.   36   However, basically, your friends are either really upset with you, or it has nothing to do with you at all. But how can you tell? What’s more, what should you do?

Find out if they have shut all their friends out or just you. It’s important to figure out if your friends have moved on from everyone, or just you. If it’s just you, then you probably did something at some point.   37   They try to get their forgiveness.

Reflect on yourself. Have your friends been upset with you for a while? Would you get it if they were? Not all people yell or scream when they’re upset.   38   If you fail to hear exactly what they’re saying, or you keep doing the same thing over and over again, they may move on and completely shut you out.

Communicate in a different way. There’s always the possibility that your friends haven’t shut you out completely, but they are bored with a certain form of communication, like texting or chatting online.   39   If so, trying a different method to reach your friends could make things better.

40   If you can’t get responses from your friends, consider reconciling (和解) with them at some point in the future. Send them a noteLet them know you care about them and leave the door open for them.

A. Give them a helping hand.

B. So sometimes they take a break from it.

C. If you feel it was something bad, apologize for it.

D. Let your friends know you’re open to friendships.

E. There are many reasons why your friends might shut you out.

F. Your friends may not answer your calls or emails suddenly.

G. Some people will talk to you calmly about something you did.

How to Build Healthy Interpersonal Relationship

Human beings are social creatures and thrive(茁壮成长) in relationships with others. A healthy part to be a wellrounded, happy individual is engaging in healthy relationships with others. These friendships can provide safe environments in which individuals can thrive and help promote general wellbeing. __31__

1Know your worth.

One of the first steps in building healthy interpersonal relationships is understanding one's value. When an individual is aware of and treasures what he or she has, the building of relationships can be founded on that knowledge. __32__ Everyone has talents. When this worth is discovered, a person can then make use of these skills in approaching interpersonal relationships. If someone is a good listener, showing how to develop this skill can attract relationships with individuals who have a need for this talent.

2Recognize the value of others.

__33__ In a healthy interpersonal relationships, both parties should be respected and feel as if they are valued in the friendship. When contributions to the relationship become onesided, the relationship will move from healthy to unhealthy.

3__34__

Another way to build healthy relationships is to make friends with someone who shares the same value systems and lifestyles.Knowing that a friend will not request something from an individual will help to foster trust in the relationship. __35__The relationship can grow on this familiarity. Trust can also develop from these similarities and go a long way in fostering a healthy friendship.

A. Everyone has worth.

B. Be true to yourself.

C. Seek out individuals with similar value systems.

D. A healthy interpersonal relationship cannot be built on dishonesty.

E. Also, having the same lifestyle can provide a link of familiarity.

F. Here are some tips to build healthy interpersonal relationships.

G. Along with understanding one's worth is recognizing and understanding the worth of others.

Rebel has three meanings according to my dictionary: 1) a person who fights against the government of their country. 2) a person who opposes somebody in authority over them within an organization, a political party, etc. 3) a person who does not like to obey rules or who does not accept normal standards of behavior, dress, etc. Today,   41  .

Some might say, rebels are the destroyers of our normal society. To some extent, yes, they are.   42   In my view, every step of advance has rebels’ significant contribution.

I have seen a TED talk, from which a man, born in an Islamic family, talked about his father who was an IS member took him to have a drill, using a sniper rifle to shoot a target, when he was about 10 years old.   43   Of course, his father was a militant and had plotted a bombing attack. But as the man grew up, he found that his family was not going in a right way. Then he left his family, changed his beliefs and gave a TED talk, which shows that he is not a militant like his father.

44   Yes, The Son is not like The Father. Isn’t his son a rebel that didn’t obey his family’s rules and the standards of his father’s behavior? If not, what would happen?   45   Just because we have those rebels who can see the drawbacks and flaws of their families, they can replace them with virtues, revise their ideas, and change the lines of their beliefs. So, we couldn’t criticize a rebel more. Suppose they could change our future to a better one, should we give them a chance to do what they want?

A. They, the rebels, are hopes instead, in my view.

B. And also because of that, our society moves forward.

C. I think from this story you could get the gist of what I am going to talk about.

D. No doubt, another militant or terrorist came out from his family.

E. Each family has something imperfect which needs to revise.

F. I only want to talk about the third meaning of the word rebel and discuss the significance of being it.

G. Finally, he hit the target, and his uncles around him praised him as: The Father, The Son.
