When you leave school, you can breathe a sigh of relief and leave learning behind, right? Wrong! Learning should last a lifetime. You exercise your body to stay strong, and you should exercise your mind to stay sharp.

An English idiom says, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But scientists have discovered that isn’t true. Older people can learn, and they should, in order to keep their brain active. Now a new trend has begun in several states in the US that encourages learning. Adults can attend One Day University. They can spend a Saturday or Sunday hearing four 70-minute lectures. Each one is given by

a top university professor. One of the original participants said, It’s like a health club for the brain.” Also, universities like MIT have made all of their

courses and lectures available online for free. Libraries offer learning programs too.

With so much available, there is no excuse not to learn!

Learning is a habit. Don’t leave it behind after you leave school. On the

website lifehack.org, author Scott Young mentions several things to help you.

Always have a book. It doesn’t matter if you read fast or slow. Just read. If you read just one book a week, you’ll read 52 over the course of a year. Think of the knowledge you’ll gain.

Practice it. As you read, do something with what you’ve learned. Don’t just enjoy the mental exercise. Use the knowledge. If you read about painting, try it!

Make a “to learn” list. Compose a “to learn” list for yourself. Maybe you want to speak better English, play the piano, or cook French food. Whatever interests you, put it on your list and then make the time to do it.

Teach others. Whatever you learn, teach someone else. You’ll not only help others but also understand what you’ve learned.

B.  Leaving learning behind is what you should do after a break.

C.   You can relax as you have escaped from the hard life of studying.

D.  You should have a good rest and then go on learning.

43.    How many ways of learning for adults in the US are mentioned in Paragraph 2?

A. One.                         B. Two.                         C. Three.                       D. Four.

44.    Which of the following is NOT a suggestion made by Scott Young in the passage?

A. Keep learning as a habit.                                  B. Always have a book.

If you know something is bad for you, why can’t you just stop? About 70% of smokers say they would like to stop. Drug and alcohol abusers (滥用者) struggle to give up the bad habits that hurt their bodies and destroy families and friendships. And many of us have unhealthy weight that we could lose if only we would eat right and exercise more. So why don’t we do it?

Some scientists have been searching for answers. They’ve studied what happens in our brains as habits form. They’ve found answers to why bad habits, once formed, are so difficult to kick. And they’re developing ways to help us make the changes we’d like to make.

Habits are a normal part of life, and are often helpful. “ We wake up everymorning, shower, comb our hair or brush our teeth without being aware of it,” Volkow says. We can drive along familiar routes without really thinking about the directions. “When behaviors become automatic(不加思索的), it gives us an advantage, because the brain does not have to perform the action on purpose.” Volkow says. This frees up our brains to focus on different things.

One way to kick bad habits is to focus on your unhealthy habits. Then try your best to stop them. For example, habits can be linked in our minds to certain places and activities. You could develop a plan, say, to avoid walking down the hall where there’s a candy machine. Try to avoid going places where you’ve usually smoked. Stay away from friends and situations linked to problem drinking or drug use.

Another helpful way is to replace unhealthy habits with new, healthy ones. “It doesn’t work for everyone,” Volkow says. “But certain groups of patients who have a history of taking a drug can do something else like running and it helps them stay away from drugs.”

21. In the first paragragh the writer mainly wants to tell us ______.

     A. we should stop something bad for us

     B. most smokers would like to stop smoking

     C. bad habits are really difficult to give up

     D. eating right and exercise more can lose weight

22. Scientists studied what happened in our brains as habits form in order to______.

     A. find answers to solve the problem   B. find ways to form good habits

     C. kick their own bad habits          D. help us see how bad habits form

23. If you want to kick bad habits you’d better_______.

     A. focus on them on purpose           B. go to the places linked with them

     C. do something linked with them       D. ask your friends for help

24. What is the main idea of the passage?

     A. Breaking bad habits.             B. Forming good habits.

     C. Finding reasons for bad habits     D. Replacing bad habits with good ones.

Do you ever feel like you’ve got a great idea, one that makes you feel incredibly inspired and want to change the world?   16   . We’ve all been there. And we’ll all be there again and again throughout life. So take a deep breath, and try these techniques:

1.      Start small.

So often, we feel the need to take great leaps and bounds. Every day needs to

be filled with productivity. But we reach a point where we get overwhelmed by all the things we have to do. Break it down.     17   . Take a baby step. Once you get going, it will be harder to stop.

2.      Do the thing you’re afraid of.

Often when we get overwhelmed, it’s because the task ahead is daunting(吓人的). There’s no easy way around it. The more we think about it, the more frightened we feel.    18    Most of the time, things are never as bad as we imagined them in our minds.

    3.    19

The biggest misunderstanding is that we have to do everything on our own. But that’s simply not true. Success never comes without support. So reach out. Call a friend. Ask for advice. Your community will be more than happy to help, and you’ll feel better.

20     The harder you work for something you believe in, the better you will feel about it. And once you learn how to handle hitting a brick wall, it will get easier to deal with the next time around.

A.     Ask for help.

B.     Don’t give up.

C.     No one wants to live with regrets.

D.     No one can do everything all at once.

E.      So stop thinking about it, and just do it.

F.      Remember that if it’s not easy, it probably means it’s worth it.

G.     But then once you start working on your idea, you start doubting yourself.

Determination is the quality you show when you’ve decided to do something and you won’t let anything stop you. There are different kinds of determination. 36  It means you work hard to finish a difficult task to achieve your goals despite obstacles. Another one is coasting determination, which means you’re putting off short-term satisfaction for success of long-term goals. For example, there is someone who is saving money for a big trip. 37

Define success for yourself. Being determined is a skill that can be learned. To achieve it, firstly, you need to define success for yourself. You can ask yourself questions like: how do you want people to see you? How would you like to make an impact? 38

39 Once you know what success means to you, you will need to come up with goals that will help you achieve that success. It’s better to have a combination of big goals and small ones. Once you’ve worked out what you want to achieve, it’s time to figure out exactly how you can achieve your goals.

Remove negative thinking. It is a must. 40 For example: if you find yourself thinking “I’m so weak that I can’t even do one push-up,” change that thought. Instead, you should think, “My goal is to be super strong and I’m working on doing push-ups.” More importantly, you should not only be focusing on the things that need to be improved, but also figuring out your strong points and how to use those to help you succeed.

A. So learn to identify the negative language you use.

舒中高二期中英语 8 (10)

B. One kind of them is uphill determination.

C. Determination helps you solve these problems.

D. Instead of going out to dinner, he saves the money to reach his long-term goal.

E. These questions will help you figure out what success means to you.

F. Set your personal goals.

G. Work hard to achieve your goals.

Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.

My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding(衬垫)onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.

I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.

I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.

21. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?

    A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.

    B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.

    C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.

    D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.

22. The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to _______.

    A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor

    B. meet her father who was already an old man

    C. join in the holiday celebration of the company

    D. finish her work before the deadline approached

23. The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _______.

    A. avoided        B. lacked           C. abandoned        D. took

24. What is the best title for the passage?

    A. The Emotional Well-being         B. The Two Saddest Words

    C. The Most Useful Rule              D. The Peace of Mind

The exact cause of the crime cannot be remembered as it happened a long time ago, but the punishment is still   41   and vivid: Dig up the fig tree(无花果)in the backyard and plant it at Mumsy’s place in the country. As I often did when sentenced to hard labor in the garden, I suspected this was my parents’ way of  42   me to do their dirty work.

It was a Sunday morning. With some tools, I went at the tree, cutting it branch by branch and limb by limb,   43  all that remained of the once-proud specimen(标本,样本)was a sorry-looking stump of a thing.

“What did that   44   ever do to you?” my father said, “You should have left some taproot (主根) of it, at least. Go and load up the truck.” On any other day before, during the  45  to Mumsy’s, we would have pleasantly  46  school as usual, but I fenced myself off that time.

They say you can  52  toenails(指甲)in it and grow little kids.” My father answered. I never tried the toenail trick, but I did  53  as it settled in, took root, and began to prosper. I was amazed and  54  when bowls of figs began to fill the fridge.

In a perfectly  55  world, I don’t deserve the reward. I had  56  the tree for no good reasons. What right did I have to the fruit? Years later, I put this  57  to my father. Watching him slide a bowl of figs from the fridge one morning, I felt a sudden stab of shame for my boyhood  58  . My father took a fig from the  59  and let me think of the fruit as forgiveness. “You,” he said, “  60  some of that.”

go to university like most of my family members, schoolmates and even best friends. I can’t say that I didn’t have moments of doubt about my decision. As the last term of school was coming to a close, I began to feel very anxious about the choice I made to be different and start an apprenticeship(学徒).

Although my A-level results day was the one that I felt extremely proud of, I knew that the general feeling from most of my teachers was disappointment. I completed my application, did a series of ability tests and interviews, and at last nine months later—I began an apprenticeship with Sellafield Ltd.

As soon as I started, I knew straight away that I made the right decision. From the people I met, to the on-the-job training that I was experiencing, I began to feel a real sense of purpose and could see a successful career in an industry that I found so interesting and challenging, paving the way in front of me. I never thought when I was in sixth grade that I would be working in the nuclear industry, but now I can’t imagine working anywhere else.

Since finishing my apprenticeship over two years ago, I’ve had countless opportunities to develop myself both academically and personally. I’ve bought my first home; I was chosen to be a part of the Government’s Get In Go Far apprenticeship campaign, and offered an amazing and unique secondment(人员借调) with the Environment, Health, Safety and Quality department at Sellafield.

I have no doubt that without my apprenticeship I wouldn’t be in the position I am today, but equally I know that it was only the beginning for me.

My apprenticeship inspired me to explore different career paths in the nuclear industry, and it gave me the confidence to know that I can succeed in shifting from one position to another.

Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say. “I’m working to remember names better.   38    What is it again?”

●Use associations

Link each person yon meet with one thing out find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note: “Vicki Cheng---tall, black hair.” To reinforce you’re your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.

 39

When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later.

●Go early

Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time.  40   And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others---an automatic review for you.

GRANDMOTHER, Michelle Riotton, a 78 old, survived after falling down a mountain valley. She set off for a walk alone dressed only in a light jacket and trousers. "I slipped into a valley!" said Mrs. Riotton, who said the fall happened in a deep forest close to her home village.

It was warm and sunny when the accident happened, but temperatures dropped to very low when night fell, and it rained. "I wasn’t afraid," said Mrs Riotton. "But I was worried that my children and grandchildren would become too worried about me." Mrs Riotton said she covered herself in leaves when feeling cold, taking very small bites of two biscuits which she had in her pocket and drinking rainwater which fell down her face.

She spent six nights before she was found on Saturday. She was lying at the bottom of the valley, which was less than a mile from her home. The search had once been stopped, but Patrice Fossard, one of her neighbors, insisted that the search continue. "There was no way we could give up her, even if deep inside we felt we had little hope of finding her alive," said Mr Fossard. "It was a miracle that Michele was finally found."

Mrs Riotton said she would be taking life easier from now on. "Enough is enough!" she said. "No more forests--I don’t want to visit one again."

A mountain policeman said walking alone in the mountain was not recommended and that Mrs Riotton should have carried a mobile phone with her. "The mountains are particularly dangerous at this time of year as sunny afternoons can quickly change into cold, wet and stormy evenings," he said. "Anybody walking into the mountains should carry safety equipment and be prepared for any kind of emergency."
