高二英语试题

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.

Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.

Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.

Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds’ nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.

Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.

Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.

As children, many of us learn the saying “You can't fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can't trust her, either.

32. A plover protects its young from a predator by___________.

A. getting closer to its young

D. chimps can be selfish too

34. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.

B. The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.

C. Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.

A year ago, my friend and I went to a nearby town to attend a wedding. After the reception, we were waiting for a public transport bus to go back home. It was nine o'clock at night, and although many buses passed, none stopped.
We waited for an hour and were getting desperate. We wouldn't be able to stay overnight because it was a weekday, and we both needed to work the next day. It was almost 10 pm when a family who had attended the same wedding passed by in their car. Probably sensing that we were waiting for some means of transport, they stopped and gave us a lift. I was so touched by their kindness, and I expressed my gratitude to them.
When we reached my hometown, the family dropped us at the nearest point from where we could catch a shared taxi to get back to the spot where we had parked our bike. On the way, a laborer stopped the taxi. The driver saw his clothes and asked him whether he had money to pay the fare.
The laborer shook his head and said, "No".

On hearing this, the driver refused to take him. I remembered my own plight a few minutes earlier, and I told the driver to allow him to sit with us, as I would pay his fare.

What an immediate opportunity to pass on the family's act of kindness! That night, I felt light-hearted and I went to sleep happily and filled with joy about what I had gotten to do. May this chain of kindness continue!

   D. Attitude Decides Everything

He is a Time Lord who can travel anywhere he wants in time, but still never seems to be happy. He is always very well dressed. He refuses to use guns to kill anybody, preferring to trust his brains.Who could be a better hero for British people? He is the Doctor, hero of the popular BBC TV series Doctor Who, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of its 2005 reboot on March 26.

In 2005 the sci-fi TV series returned to British screens after originally running from 1963 until 1989. In the series, the Doctor travels through time in his TARDIS police boxsaving Earth and other planets from dangerous aliens and humans.

The show looked a little different upon its 2005 return the show used to be famous for cheap, ugly special effects but they were gone, replaced by expensive computer effects and attractive young stars. Christopher Eccleston played the Ninth Doctor in 2005, and there have been four more since, including the current Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi.

You may wonder why the Doctor has been played by so many people, thirteen in total. This is because every few years, the doctor “regenerates”which means his character "dies” but comes back to life with a completely new body afterwards. As the Radio Times put it“Who else can cheat death by getting a whole new face?”

The show has no limits. The Doctor has already visited the time of Shakespeare, found out the truth about the American moon landing of 1969’ and gone back to the very early days of Earth. He has also traveled forward in time and been to many strange planets. Who knows where he’ll go in the next 10 years? Or if the Doctor will even be a man? Last year, head writer Steven Moffat told BANG Showbiz ii is very possible that a woman will play the Doctor in the future

What are the biggest problems that society will have to deal with in the new age? There are diseases like AIDS and cancer. There’s climate change, of course. And what about producing enough cheap food and energy for the world’s growing population? Who’s going to solve all these terrible problems? Yes, politicians and world leaders will have a big part to play. Yes, businesses will need to create the economic wealth to pay for some of these things. But who’s going to make a much greater difference to something like AIDS or climate change? It’s going to be a scientist. It is the scientist who can turn some new bit of science into a new technology to solve these problems.

If you like thinking about the world around you, why not become a scientist? It doesn’t mean you have to wear a white coat and plastic glasses and spend all your time in a lab as most people often imagine! Scientists do all kinds of amazing things that are actually interesting!

Forensic(法医的) scientists work with the police to find quite small clues to catch criminals. Scientists work in schools and colleges as the teachers and professors who will train tomorrow’s scientists. Don’t think a scientist is far away! Maybe you like cooking? You could be a food technologist helping to keep fruit and vegetables fresher for longer. Perhaps sport is your thing? Do you know that most top athletes work with sports scientists in order to improve their performance? You could even be the science writer who gets to spend the life studying the latest advances and sharing them with the world.

Margaret, married with two small children, has been working for the last seven years as a night cleaner, cleaning offices in a big building.

She got trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her elder child became seriously ill. “I would have liked to go back to it , but the shifts(工作班次)are all wrong for me, as I have to be home to get the children up and off to school.”

So she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week for just 90, before tax and insurance. “It’s better than it was last year, but I still think that people who work ‘unsocial hours’ should get a bit extra.”

The hours she’s chosen to work mean that she sees plenty of the children, but very little of her husband. However, she doesn’t think that puts any pressure on their relationship.

Her work isn’t physically very hard, but it’s not exactly pleasant, either. “I do get angry with people who leave their offices like a place for raising pigs. If they realized people like me have to do it, perhaps they’d be a bit more careful.”

The fact that she’s working all night doesn’t worry Margaret at all. Unlike some dark buildings at night, the building where she works is fully lit, and the women work in groups of three. “Since I’ve got to be here, I try to enjoy myselfand I usually do, together with the other girls. We all have a good laugh, so the time never drags.”

Another challenge Margaret has to face is the reaction of other people when she tells them what she does for a living. “They think you’re a cleaner because you don’t know how to read and write,” said Margaret. “I used to think what my parents would say if they knew what I’d been doing, but I don’t think that way any more. I don’t dislike the work though I can’t say I’m mad about it.”

24Margaret quit her job as a nurse because ______

Ashe wanted to earn more money to support her family

Bshe had suffered a lot of mental pressure

Cshe needed the right time to look after her children

Dshe felt tired of taking care of patients

25Margaret gets angry with people who work in the office because ______

Athey never clean their offices         Bthey look down upon cleaners

Cthey never do their work carefully     D. they always make a mess in their offices

26When at work, Margaret feels   ______

Alight-hearted because of her fellow workers    Bhappy because the building is fully lit

Ctired because of the heavy workload          Dbored because time passes slowly

27The underlined part in the last paragraph implies that Margaret’s parents would _____

Ahelp care for her children           Bregret what they had said

Cshow sympathy for her             Dfeel disappointed with her

Thomas Jefferson once said,“I’m a great believer in luck, and I find ________I work,________I have of it.”

He sold me the house at a cheap price and threw in some of the furniture        .

A. on the spot    B. subscribe to

C. went for    D. made out

My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.

If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in. Someone will give you an electronic PIN to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it’s dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest to you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.

Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console(控制器), a small machine that turns things on and off around you.

The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to movies, you need a ticket. If I give you car keys, you can use my car. The car works for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.

I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better that the ones I’ve put in today.

I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself instead, “How will I live without them?”

48. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.  How to develop a new system.   B. The function of the PIN.

C.  A home for the future.     D. Easy life in the future.

49. This PIN tells the house ________.

A. what you need           B. who and where you are

C. where the lights nearest you are    D. how you wear clothes

50. What is the writer most likely to be according to the passage?

A.  An IT expect.          B. A famous doctor.

C. An idealist.            D. An experienced teacher.

Maybe you have a dog at home and enjoy taking it for walks and curling up with it oft the sofa. Personally, for me they re aggressive, smelly animals that need constant care and lack the

independent nature and cleverness that cats have. But given the life - saving skills they sessmaybe I should give (hem a second chance.

To some a perfect pooch might be one that looks cute, is loyal and sits when it's told but that's about it — it's just a pet. But to really be man's best  friend, they need to do something  useful. Some breeds that have amazing sense of smell are put to good use as sniffer dogs or detection dogs, and are trained to use their senses to detect substances such as explosives and illegal drugs. You 11 often see (hem at airports or working with police out on the streets.

Other types of working dogs include guide dogs, hearing dogs and mobility dogs all providing a life - saving service to their owners. Some dogs can alert (报警)emergency services when their owner has a seizure. And there are clever canines that have been trained (o provide affection and comfort lo people in hospitals, retirement homes or schools and to people with loneliness.

New uses for dogs are being discovered all the lime. A dog is in fact a highly sophisticated bio - sensor. Evolution has given it this highly sensitive! nose.

It's this incredible ability  that has led to the UK's National Health Service assessing wheth- er dogs can be used to detect early stage prostate (前腺)cancer vital for improving survival rates. The dogs - usually from the gundog breedsuch as labradora and springer spaniels —are taught to detect a sample of urine from a patient  with prostate cancer.

It's   also managed to train dogs lo detect changes in blood glucose levels in people suffering from type 1 diabetes. One patient, who has one of these medical alert assistance dogs, told the BBC that " in the three and a half years we 've  been togetherhe has alerted and potentially saved my life 350 times. And he does it all for a dog biscuit."

To save a for a dog biscuit seems a small price to pay so maybe I should have more ad-miration and respect for our four — legged friends — maybe cats arent so smart!

A. They are cute and loyal.

First lady’s campaign brings change

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wal-Mart(沃尔玛) is putting special labels(标签)on some  products to help shoppers quickly notice healthier ones. Millions of schoolchildren are helping themselves to vegetables from salad bars in their lunchrooms, and kids’ meals at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants come with a side of fruit or vegetables and a glass of low-fat milk.

These changes are taking place due to the campaign against childhood fatness, for which the first lady Michelle Obama began fighting three years ago.

Fatness has become a serious problem in the country. About one-third of U.S. children are overweight, which puts them at increased risk for any number of deadly illnesses, including high blood pressure and heart disease.

Still, Mrs. Obama faces challenge. Not everyone welcomes her effort. Some blame her for going too far and say she has no right to tell what people should and shouldn’t eat. But nutrition supporters and others praise her for using her influence to help bring interests to the table. They said the first lady has raised public awareness about fatness, which will help decrease childhood fatness rates.

There is evidence of small decrease in childhood fatness rates in some parts of the country. New York reported a 5.5 percent drop in fatness rates in kindergarteners through eighth-graders between the 2006-07 and 2010-11 school years. In Philadelphia, the drop was 4.7 percent among students in grades K-12.

Fighting against children fatness is hard work, but it’s well worth the effort. The first lady is planning a promotional tour. She has been talking up the campaign against childhood fatness on daytime and late-night TV shows and on the radio. She also plans discussions next week on Google and Twitter.

“We’ve been spending a lot of time educating and re-educating families and kids on how to eat, what to eat,” the first lady said. “We’re starting to see some changes and we’re starting to show some improvement.”

21. What is the purpose of the campaign started by the first lady?

A. To call on healthy eating.    B. To educate people how to avoid illness.

C. To show the harm caused by fatness. D. To reduce childhood fatness rate.

22. What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A. The popularity of healthy food.

B. The importance of balanced diet.

C. The changes brought out by the campaign.

D. Children’s preference for vegetables.

23. What can we learn from the passage about Mrs. Obama?

 A. She is an expert in healthy eating.

 B. She shows great concern about childhood fatness.

 C. She has won support of the whole nation.

 D. She makes good use of media to increase her influence.

The days of staring at the computer screen pretending to take an interest in an assignment even though you are bored out of your mind may soon be coming to an end. That's because computers of the future will be able to detect boredom and even react to it in real time.

But before you get concerned, the machine is not reading your mind. It is just keeping track of the constant involuntary movements that people exhibit when in front of a computer or even a television. These are not the bigger instrumental actions like moving a mouse or using the remote, but sensitive hardly noticeable movements like scratching. Researcher Witchel says the level of movement directly shows how absorbed the person is in what he/she is reading or watching—the higher the interest level, the less the movement!

To test the theory, Witchel and his team invited 27 people and exposed them to a variety of digital content for three minutes at a time. The activities ranged from playing online games to reading documents like the EU banking regulations that most people would find boring.

A video motion (动作) tracker monitored their movements as they powered through each assignment. Just as the researchers had suspected, the involuntary actions decreased remarkably, by as much as 42%, when the subjects were totally absorbed in what they were reading or seeing.

Fortunately, the scientists are not planning to use the findings to create machines that report students who are not focusing at school. Instead, they believe that applying the motion detecting technology to future computers will help improve the digital learning experience.

The scientists say being able to judge the student's interest level will enable educators to adjust the materials in real time and reengage the student. Witchel also believes that the technology can provide filmmakers with honest audience opinions.

8Which movement does the machine keep track of?

ABreathing.  BTyping.  CScratching.  DWalking.

9What might people's high level of movement indicate during TVwatching?

AThey are getting excited.  BThey are feeling bored.

CThey are very interested.  DThey are thinking actively.

10How did the researchers come to the conclusion?

ABy a followup survey.   BBy analysing previous data.

CBy means of questionnaires.  DBy observing participants' performance.

11Which field will detecting technology be applied to?

AAgriculture.  BPolitics.  CIndustry.  DEducation.

Japanese Students Suffer from Pressure

Last April,15-year-old Rei Iwasaki stopped her piano and flute lessons and began to study every day of the week. Her parents paid to send her to a "cram school(灌输式教学模式的学校)."She wanted very much to pass her exams.

In February she did pass an all-day, five-subject examination and entered the high school she hoped to enter.

Thirteen-year-old Akio Yoshiwara wasn't so lucky. Unable to take the pressure of the exams, he hanged himself in February. He left a suicide(自杀) note which said, "I did my best in this dear life, but it's no good."

Suicides are now a common part of life among students in Japan. The cause is the incredible pressure of the "examination hell."

Even a number of teachers are committing suicide each year. When some students broke windows in a school near Tokyo, the principal blamed himself and wrote the following note: "The incidents were due to the lack of appropriate measures by the principal and I apologize. I am very tired.

The Japanese educational system is much different from the American system. It is perhaps the most regimented(严密组织的) school system in any of the industrialized nations.

Boys and girls wear uniforms and go to school six days a week --- 240 days a year compared to 180 in the U.S. Ninety- five percent graduate from high school compared to seventy-five percent in the U.S.

Students don't ask questions in class but only listen respectfully to the teachers. And every few years students are tested to see which school they will enter next. There is stiff competition for the "best" schools.

The result is a well-informed, disciplined student, ideal for factory and company work and excellent at learning specialized skills. But there is little  fun  in  education,  little  creativity  and  the  incredible pressure  of "examination hell."
