Australia has promised to introduce the most comprehensive (全面的) carbon trading program outside Europe in 2010. The government in Canberra plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions (排放) by at least five percent by 2020, but it could make bigger reductions if other countries agree to tougher targets.

The Australian government warns that without tough environmental measures the country could lose key industries and jobs. Climate Change Minister Penny Wong says the economy is under threat and decisive action is needed.

Central to the government’s climate change plan is a carbon emissions trading program that will be introduced within two years. It would involve one thousand of the nation’s biggest companies and would cover about three-quarters of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Many scientists believe that greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, contribute to global warming. Many of them are released by burning fuels such as coal and oil.

Companies will be required to buy permits for each ton of carbon they emit, although big polluting exporters will receive up to 90 percent of their carbon licenses free.

Many business leaders want the government to delay the plan because of the current global financial crisis, which is slowing the Australian economy. Peter Anderson from the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says it is irresponsible to bring in a carbon trading plan now.

Environmentalists, on the other hand, say Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has not properly addressed the threat of climate change. Activists had sought a minimum emissions cut of 25 percent.

Instead, the Rudd government aims to cuts carbon emissions by at least five percent of 2000 levels by 2020. That amount could rise to 15 percent, if future global agreements set such a target.

Ray Nias of the environmental group WWF says Australia will pay the price for low targets. “This is a deeply, deeply disappointing target,” Nias said. “It commits Australia to long-term climate change. It will make Australia’s ability to negotiate (协商) global agreements very, very difficult. It is much lower than even we had imagined.”

Australia has one of the highest per-person greenhouse emissions rates in the world because of its reliance on coal for electricity.

Some scientists warn that the vast, dry Australian continent, which has been suffering a series of droughts in recent years, could be one of the region’s hardest hit by global warming.

We all know that we have to eat to live, so it is important for us to develop

healthy eating habits. The following tips may help you.

16  Take a hard look at your eating habits. Do you eat more when you feel stressed? Do you withhold food from yourself in order to feel like you’re in control? Carefully think about whether you have an unhealthy emotional attachment to food.

Drink plenty of water.  17  Drink water during and after meals to aid digestion (消化), and try to drink between 2 and 3 liters () per day.

18  Ideally, you should eat three meals per day, with two snacks in-between. Doing this allows you to eat slightly less at your meals, giving your body a more manageable amount of food to digest.

Don’t skip breakfast.  19    Research shows that people who skip breakfast are usually fatter than those who eat a well-balanced breakfast.

Eat slowly. Have you ever gorged (狼吞虎咽) on a huge meal and felt fine immediately after, but suddenly felt like exploding 15 minutes later? This happens because it takes some time for your stomach to tell your brain that it’s full.  20  That way, by the time you get the message and start feeling satisfied, you haven’t eaten too much extra food.

A. Have a healthy attitude towards food.

B. Choose the right food to eat.

C. Eat 5 times per day.

D. Eating less meat can have several benefits.

E. You should eat your food more slowly.

F. It can improve your sense of healthiness and help you feel full.

G. Many people do because they don’t feel hungry in the morning.

I hated dinner parties. But I decided to give them another shot because I'm in London. And my friend Mallery invited me. And because dinner parties in London are very different from those back in New York. There, “I’m having a dinner party” means: "I'm booking a table for 12 at a restaurant you can't afford and we'll be sharing the checque evenly, no matter what you eat." Worse, in Manhattan there is always someone who leaves before the bill arrives. They'll throw down cash, half of what they owe, and then people like me, who don’t drink, end up paying even more. But if I try to use the same trick, the hostess will shout: "Where are you going?" And it's not like I can say I have somewhere to go: everyone know I have nowhere to go.

But in London, dinner parties are in people's homes. Not only that, the guests are an interesting mix. The last time I went to one, the guests were from France, India. Denmark and Nigeria; it was like a gathering at the United Nations in New York. The mix is less striking. It's like a gathering at Bloomingdale's, a well-known department store.

For New Yorkers, talking about other parts of the world means Brooklyn and Queens in New York. But at Mallery's, when I said that I had been to Myanmar recently, people knew where it was. In New York people would think it was a usual new club.

5What does the word "shot" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. Choice.       B. Try          C. Style.            D. Goal

A. A bit unusual          B. Full of tricks.           C. Less costly.           D. More interesting.

8.What is the author's opinion of some New Yorkers from her experience

A. Easy-going.     B. Self-centred.    C. Generous.    D. Conservative.

One advantage of the Internet is shopping conveniently online for clothes; one disadvantage of the Internet is also shopping conveniently online for clothes.

“Nothing fits,” said Lam Yuk Wong, a senior in electrical and computer engineering at Rice University. “Everyone says this. They order clothes and they don’t fit. People get very unhappy.”

Wong and her design partner, Xuaner “Cecilia” Zhang, are Team White Mirror, creators of what they call a “virtual (虚拟)fitting room”. Their goal is simple and consumer-friendly: to let online clothing shoppers have a perfect fit and a perfect look when shopping every time. Both women are from China, Wong from Hong Ko ng and Zhang from Beijing. They both order most of their clothing online. They got the idea from their own experience as consumers and from listening to the complaints of friends and relatives. “They say, ‘The color is wrong’ or ‘I got the right size but it still does not fit.’ We want to make it like you’re in the store trying on the clothes,” Zhang said.

Using a Kinect developed by Microsoft for use with its Xbox 360 video game player, Zhang scans Wong and turns her image into, in effect, a virtual model, keeping Wong’s dimensions (尺寸), and even her skin and hair color. “We put the clothes on the shopper’s 3-D body models and show how they look when they are dressed,” Wong said. So far, Wong and Zhang have adapted the software to show dresses and shirts, and they are now working on shorts.

Asked if she thought men as well as women might be interested in using their virtual fitting room, Wong said, “I think their wives will care about this, so it will also be important to men.”

4. Why is shopping conveniently online for clothes a disadvantage?

A. Students may easily get addicted to it.

B. Clothes bought online may not fit.

C. It attracts more online clothing shoppers.

D. It causes shoppers to waste too much money.

5. Wong and Zhang got the idea to design a virtual fitting room from ____.

A. their shopping experiences    B. a program at their university

C. some shop-owners’ complaints    D. the Xbox 360 video game player

6. Which of the following shows the process of using the virtual fitting room?

A. scanning -- trying on clothes -- getting images

B. trying on clothes -- getting models -- scanning

C. scanning -- getting models --trying on clothes

D. trying on clothes -- getting images -- scanning

7. What did Wong think of her virtual fitting room?

A. It is perfectly developed.    B. It will have its market share.

C. It is limited to women shoppers.    D. It is like a kind of video game player.

Trampolining

What’s more fun than standing still? Jumping up and down on a springy piece of fabric(织物)! This activity is known as trampolining and it’s seeping the nation.

The idea of trampolining is ancient. Eskimos have been throwing each other in the air for thousands of years. Firemen began using a life net to catch people jumping from buildings in 1887.   36

A gymnast named George Nissan and his coach Larry Griswold made the first modern trampoline in 1936. They got the idea by watching swing artists bouncing off of a tight net at the circus. They named their equipment after the Spanish word trampolín, which means diving board.   37   In 1942 they began making trampolines to sell to the public.

___ 38    Experts find that more than 100,000 people hurt themselves while using one each year. Clubs and gyms use large safety nets or other equipment to make it safer. Most trampoline injuries happen at home. Since trampolines are more affordable than ever, injuries are even more common.

These injuries happen for many reasons. People may bounce too high and land off of the trampoline or onto the springs.   39   Perhaps the worst injuries happen when untrained people try to do flips (快速翻转). Landing on your neck or head can cause injuries or even kill you.

But don’t let all that bad news keep you down. There are many things that you can do to practice safe trampolining. Trampolines have been around for a while now. They have brought a lot of joy to many people. They can be a good source of exercise and activity.   40  But they can also be deadly. It is important to follow some professional guidance. Be sure that you are practicing safety while having a good time. Happy bouncing!

A. They can help people improve their balance and moves.

B. Trampolines may be fun, but they can also be dangerous.

C. The men wanted to share their idea with the whole world.

D. Injuries also happen when many people are jumping at the same time.

E. You can surround your trampoline with a net so that people don’t fall off of it.

F. They found a winner when they performed a piece of spring across a steel frame.

G. And in the early 1900s, circus performers began bouncing off of netting to amuse audiences.

People believe that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skills of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you’re wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms (体育馆). Here, people are learning on special climbing walls. The climbing wall goes straight up and has small holding places for hands and feet.

How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness (保护带) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes (绳索) tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don’t fall. A beginner’s wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it’s easy to see the next piece of metal. Sometimes, it’s not. The most difficult part is to control your fear. It’s normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it’s difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.

Climbing attracts people because it’s good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger.

21. What can we infer from the passage________?

   A. People are fairly interested in climbing nowadays.

   B. It is impossible to build up one’s body by climbing.

   C. People can only learn the skill of climbing outdoors.

   D. It is always easy to see holding places in climbing.

22. The most difficult thing to do in wall climbing is _______.

It is good to see that today more people have realized the importance exercising and are playing sports regular. But the problem is that there are not enough sports facilities to meet the public growing demand. I love playing basketball and often play with my friends on weekends. Therefore, it is difficult to rent a basketball field and possible to find a free one. It seems that all courts in the city were always full. Weather permitted, we can play in outdoors. But on rainy days or in winter we have to turn to indoor courts. There are not much in my city, and the charge is high. The government should build more public sports facilities, so easier access will encourage more people participate in sports.
