Jack is only child in the family, that is probably why he is so much spoiled. Though his parents clear know they need to be strict with him sometimes, but they simply give him whatever he wants. He likes history and geography but really hate maths and physics. He fails in these two subjects last week again. His mother complained that he spent too much time play computer games. His teacher, Mrs. Green, made a suggestion that Jack moved to the apartment close to her house so that she could help himself with his maths sometimes. For her delight, Jack agreed.

Bobby White works as a police officer in Gainesville, Florida. One day, he was told to investigate a noise complaint. A group of boys were playing basketball in the street. Instead of blaming the boys or sending them home, White joined them.

White started shooting baskets with the kids. And a few minutes later, some more boys came and played the game. The camera on White’s police car recorded the event. The police department posted the video online. It was seen over 15 million times.

Before he left the boys, White said he would come back again with “backup”. That is what police officers say when they are appealing for help from other officers.

As the video spread, a basketball star became interested in what happened in Gainesville. That player was Shaquille O’Neal. He was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers when they won the National Basketball Association championship. He also played for the Orlando Magic, a team not far from Gainesville.

The other day, O’Neal visited the Gainesville police and spoke with White. And then they went out to “the scene”. That is what police officers call the area where a crime happened. But of course, there was no crime.

This time, White told the boys, “I told you I was going to bring some backup. Right? You guys ready?” And O'Neal turned up from a nearby car. The kids got really excited. O'Neal played basketball with the boys and other officers as a crowd gathered. O’Neal eventually gathered the boys together and gave some wise words, “Be a leader, not a follower”, “Respect your peers(同龄人) and your elders”, and “You can be whatever you want to be”.

25. Why didn’t White send the kids home?

A. He was also a basketball fan.                                   B. The kids didn’t play in the street.

C. He didn’t think it was a problem.                         D. The kids promised not to make a noise.

26. What did the police department officials probably think of White’s deed?

A. It was illegal.                                                                  B. It was useless.

C. It deserved praise.                                                     D. Explanation should be offered.

27. Who did the backup turn out to be?

A. The boys’ peers.                                                         B. Bobby White himself.

C. Some other police officers.                                  D. A well-known basketball player.

28. What was O’Neal’s main purpose in arriving at “the scene”?

A. To teach the kids a lesson.                                     B. To encourage and help the kids.

C. To teach the kids to play basketball.                D. To help the police look into the crime.

While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please. I insist.” Jimmy agreed.

“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into the office. Feeling both positive and negative emotions is a natural part of being human. We might use the word "negative" to describe more difficult emotions, but it doesn't mean those emotions are bad or we shouldn't have them. Still, most people would probably rather feel a positive emotion than a negative one.     36    .

What matters is how our emotions are balanced — how much of each type of emotion, positive or negative, we experience.

How Negative Emotions Help Us

Negative emotions warn us of threats or challenges that we may need to deal with. For example, fear can alert us to possible danger.     37    . Angry feelings warn us that someone is stepping on our toes, crossing a boundary, or violating our trust. Anger can be a signal that we might need to act on our own behalf.

Negative emotions focus our awareness.     38   . But too many negative emotions can make us feel anxious, exhausted, or stressed out. When negative emotions are out of balance, problems might seem too big to handle.

How Positive Emotions Help Us

Positive emotions balance out negative ones, but they have other powerful benefits, too. Instead of narrowing our focus like negative emotions do, positive emotions affect our brains in ways that increase our awareness, attention, and memory. They help us take in more information and hold several ideas in mind at once.    39    .

When positive emotions open us up to new possibilities, we are more able to learn and build on our skills.    40    .

  A. What helps you feel confident?

  B. That leads to doing better on tasks and tests.

  C. It’s a signal that we might need to protect ourselves.

  D. They help us focus on a problem so we can deal with it.

  E. For example, it’s likely you’d prefer to feel happy instead of sad.

F. And they then make us understand how different ideas relate to each other.

G. Pay attention to these powerful tools and find ways to make time for them.

I log onto a computer at the doctor’s office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.

There,a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later,in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription.I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.

This scenario(场景)is my nightmarish(噩梦般的)vision of the future, which hasn’t come to pass----at least not yet.

I should say I really do like many aspects of technology.I am a big fan of air conditioning in the summer and heaters in winter. But I am writing this because I don’t want machines to take over.

When I call my dentist's office and actually get a human being on the line,I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store,I feel like shouting:"When it comes to cashiers(收银员),make mine human, please!"

After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (优惠券) for items you are buying.Even more than that,real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother's day.A cashier may also show compassion for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.

Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so crucial to everyday life.

It is being human that prompts(促使)us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment.Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have.

32.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first two paragraph?

A.To indicate high technology can make our future life very efficient

B.To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors

C.To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life

D.To predict how technology can affect the we see a doctor in the future

33.What is the main reason that the author prefers being served by humans rather than by robots?

A.Robots don’t offer to give store coupons                       B.Robots are indifferent and emotionless

C.Services from robots cost less time and more money             D.Robots can’t do a job as well as humans do

34.What does the underlined word “element” mean in the eighth paragraph?

A.Humor                      B.The ability to speak                   C.Methods                    D.Effective communication

35.What’s the main idea of the text?

A.The opinion about using man or machine                              B.Machines give people a lot of convenience

C.Being human service is better than service from machines      D.Being human service cost little money

You had better learn to be grateful. If you are grateful, you naturally   41   yourself up to receive all kinds of blessings and good things in life. You can receive almost everything you want   42   . If you want recovery soon, start by feeling grateful that you are still   43   . If it is more money that you want, start being grateful for whatever   44   of money you already have.

You see, showing gratitude(感恩) is the key to every   45   thing in life. It is the key to successful relationships, it is the key to successful futures and it is the key to   46   healthier and happier lives. And this is where the importance of being grateful lies.   47   , it makes life better.
One of my favorite   48   is“If you learn to appreciate more of what you already have, you will find yourself having more to appreciate.”Think about that!

Something as   49   as a“Thank you for being in my life”or“I  50   having you here with me”,

can go a long way. It will make the other person feel good, and   51   it also will make you feel better!

So maybe your wife is not very   52    around the house, but she’s great at cooking your favorite

53   . Or, maybe your child   54    milk all over your new shirt right before you walked out of the door for work, but usually he makes you laugh so much and makes you    55    the luckiest parent in the world.

I strongly   56    you to make a promise to yourself for the next week. Decide to   57    every morning and think of at least 5 things that you are   58    for. Then say them out loud. You will notice a smile on your face without even    59     . In 30 days you will feel completely renewed. This is the

  60   of being grateful!

Are you simply moving through your day without fully living? I think many of us have done this. Everyone wants to fully live every day.   16   So I’ve decided to share with you some ways to help you enjoy every moment.

Sit in the morning. When you wake up, in the quiet of the morning, sit on the floor. I often use this opportunity to stretch (伸展).   17  I also just sit, and focus on my breathing going in and out.

18   I like to take breaks from work, and go outside for a slow walk. Pay attention to your breathing, to everything around you, to the sounds and light of objects.

Read in silence. Find a quiet time, and a quiet place, and read a good novel. Have no television or computers on nearby. And just put yourself in the world of the novel. It might seem difficult to let your mind move from the present into the time of the novel, but it’s a great practice in focus.   19

20   Each day, find someone you care about and be grateful for his existence. If you want, you can tell that person how thankful you are to him.

 A. Walk slowly.

 B. Work with focus.

 C. Look at someone in a grateful way.

 D. But this is easier said than done.

 E. I feel every muscle in my body.

 F. It’s a way of building something good into your life.

 G. Also, I love a good novel more than almost anything else.

Manners are important to happy relations among people. No one liked a person with bad manners. Having good manners is seen by many people for a sign of cultural understanding and good taste. Polite words are one of the example. When meet people, saying “Hello!” or “How are you?” and so on means you are very polite, which will make that easy for you to communicate with others. However, other people will hate getting on with you and your life will become difficulty. Only saying polite words can you get on well with others.

All in the all, it is polite words which will make your life become convenient.
