Night after night, she came to tuck(掖被子) me in, even long after my childhood years. She’d   36   down, push my long hair out of the way, and then kiss my forehead. I don’t remember when it first started making me angry—the   37   that her hands pushed my hair. Finally, one night, I shouted at her, “Don’t do that any more—your hands are too  38  !”She didn’t say anything in  39 . But never again did my mother close out my day with that familiar expression of her love. Lying awake long afterward, my words   40   me, but I didn’t tell her I was sorry.

Well, years have passed. Mom is in her mid-seventies, and her hands I once thought to be so rough are   41   doing things for my family and me. She’s been our doctor, and always had a way of calming a girl’s stomachache or a boy’s hurt knee. She   42   the best fried chicken in the world.

Now, my own children are grown and gone. Mom no longer has Dad. And on special days, I have got into the habit of drawing the next door to  43  the night with her. So it was late one Thanksgiving Eve, as I fell into sleep in the bedroom, a familiar hand hesitantly run   44   my face to brush the hair from my forehead. Then a kissever so gently   45   my brow (额头) ever so gently. Catching Mom’s hand in mine, I blurted out(脱口而出) how  46  I was for that night. I thought she’d remember it as I did.  47   Mom didn’t know what I was talking about. She had forgotten it and forgiven me long ago. That night, I fell asleep with a new appreciation for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And the guilt I had carried around for so long was nowhere to be found.

It had been a difficult move. I’d left my family and friends in Indiana, the beloved state where I’d lived most of my life. My new home in Florida was thousands of miles away from anything I knew. It was hot—all the time. Jobs were hard to come by, but I was up for almost any challenge.

At last, I taught in a special school where students have severe learning and behavioral difficulties.

Another teacher and I had spent weeks teaching the children appropriate behavior for public outings. Unexpectedly, only a few students, including Kyle, had not earned the privilege(特权) of going. He was determined to make his disappointment known.

In the corridor(走廊) between classrooms, he began screaming, cursing, spitting, and swinging at anything within striking distance. Once his outburst(愤怒) died down, he did what he’d done when he was angry at all his other schools, at home, even once at a juvenile detention(拘留)center. He ran.

People watched in disbelief as Kyle dashed straight into the heavy morning traffic in front of the school.

I heard someone shout, “Call the police!”

But I ran after him.

Kyle was at least a foot taller than me. And he was fast. His older brothers were track stars at the nearby high school. But I could run long distances without tiring. I would at least be able to keep him in my sight and know he was alive.

After several blocks of running directly into oncoming traffic, Kyle slowed his pace.

He took a sharp left. Standing next to a trash bin, Kyle bent over with his hands on his knees. I must have looked ridiculous. But his was not a look of fear. I saw his body relax. He did not attempt to run again. Kyle stood still and watched me approach. I had no idea what I was going to say or do, but I kept walking closer.

He opened his mouth to speak when a police car pulled up, abruptly filling the space between Kyle and me. The school principal and an officer got out. They spoke calmly to Kyle, who willingly climbed into the back of the vehicle. I couldn’t hear what was said, but I didn’t take my eyes off Kyle’s face, even as they drove away.

I couldn’t help but feel that I had failed him, that I should have done or said more, that I should have fixed the situation.

I shared my feelings with a speech therapist who was familiar with Kyle’s history. “No one ever ran after him before, Rachel,” she said. “No one. They just let him go.”

Things changed the day he ran and I ran after him, even though I didn’t have the right words, even though I wasn’t able to save him from the mess he was in. It was the day I didn’t throw my hands in the air and decide he was too fast, a waste of time and effort , a lost cause. It was the day my mere presence was enough to make a profound difference.

I had worried myself sick over Simon’s mother coming to see me. I was a new   41  , and I gave an honest account of the students’ work. In Simon’s case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn’t read his own handwriting.    42    he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his   43    .

So when Simon’s mother entered the room, my palms(手掌心) were sweating. I was completely   44    for her kisses on both my cheeks. “I came to thank you,” she said, surprising me beyond speech.   45    me, Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he  46    me, he had begun to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he had   47    spent an afternoon at a friend’s house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the  48   I had nurtured(培养) in her son. She kissed me again and left.

I sat, stunned (惊呆), for about half an hour,   49   what had just happened. How did I make such a life-changing difference to that boy without    50    knowing it? What I finally came to    51    was one day, several months before, when some students were     52    reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke    53    , and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon’s the expert on this. He is the    54    one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the    55    of the room.” That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention,   56  more, and became happy. And it was all because he   57  to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed    58    was the one who took the last seat that day.

It taught me the most    59   lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I’m thankful that it came    60    and positively. A small kindness can indeed make a difference.

It was the day after Halloween when my grandmother was admitted to the hospital with the worst headache she’d ever had. While posing in our costumes the night before, we knew something was wrong, just not how wrong.

Grandma’s house was the central gathering place of my family. Sunday lunches, birthday dinners, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all were our traditions, with her as hostess. While my parents were busy running their small business, there were many nights when Grandma fed me and put me to bed in her spare room, until they came to get me. I spent my summers at Grandma’s and I went everywhere with her. I couldn’t imagine a time when she wouldn’t be around me.

Then November 1,1991 began her month-long stay in the hospitalshe suffered from a rare infection (感染)called nocardia asteroides. After being born in the year of the Great Depression, living through World War II, raising three kids, and being widowed at the age of 48, Grandma never expected to live into her seventies. The infection in her brain seemed to confirm that she wasn’t long for this world. But that’s not the end of her story. A team of doctors successfully removed the abscess(脓肿), and Grandma even made it into a local medical journal. Her doctor called her “the brain lady”.

Grandma celebrated her 85th birthday in March this year. In the almost 23 years since her recovery, she’s seen two of her four grandchildren get married and welcomed three great-grandsons. Although they damage something in her house, she loves it when my two boys come over. And while I know they make her day, seeing her love blossom for another generation makes my day too. Happy Grandparents’ Day to my amazing grandmother!

It is said that most people have not more than 30 friends at any given time, and 400 over the whole of their lives. However, on social networking sites, most users have about 150 friends. If these numbers are correct, then friendship means different things in different situations.

Also, there are no rules about friendship. There are no instructions about how to make friends, how to keep friendships going, and how to finish friendships if we want to move on. People have very different opinions about this: some people would die for their friends and they value them more than family. Others say that friends are temporary, only there to help each other until they are no longer needed. If people with such different views become friends, this can lead to problems.

Because of these different definitions of friendship, it is easy to be unhappy about our friendships. We may want them to be deeper or closer, or we may want to have more friends in our lives. Sometimes we simply do not have the time to develop our friendships, or we fear we have left it too late in life to start. If we move to another country or city, we have to find ways to make new friends again.

This dissatisfaction shows us how important friendships are for most of us. We should not think that it could be too late to build friendships. We also need to understand that the need to be around other people is one that is shared by many. Therefore, we should not be too frightened about starting to talk to people who in the future may become our friends: it is likely that they too would like to get closer to us. Remember what people say: strangers are friends we have not met yet.

24. According to the text, how many friends do the majority of people probably have?

26. We can learn from the text that most of us_________.

A. need to be with others                  B. build friendships late in life

C. are dissatisfied with our friends           D. are frightened to talk to people

27. What is the author’s attitude towards talking to a stranger?

I was 14 years old. I was angry and rebellious, with  21    regard for anything my parents had to say,  22  if it had nothing to do with me. Like so many    23   , I struggled to escape from anything that didn’t   24    my picture of the world. As a “ brilliant without need of guidance” kid, I rejected any obvious  25    of love. In fact, I got angry at the   26     of the word “love”. One   27   , after an extremely difficult day, I  28   into my room, shut the door loudly and fell down onto my bed heavily. As I lay down in the privacy of my   29   , my hands placed under my pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled it out and on the envelope it said, “To   30   when you’re alone.”

31   I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not. So I opened it. It said“MikeI know life is   32   right now, I know you are frustrated and I know we don’t do everything right. I also know that I love you   33   and nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you if you ever need to talk. If you don’t, that’s also    34  . Just know that no matter where you go or whatever you do in your life, I will always love you and be   35   that you are my son. I’m here for you and I love you-that will never    36    .Love you, Mom.”

Every night as I went to bed, I would put my hands under my    37   and I remember the _  38   I felt every time I got a letter. During my teen years, the letters were the calm assurance that I still could be loved    39    my anger and rudeness. Just before I fell   40   I became grateful that my mom knew what I, an angry teenager, needed.

Several dollars equal nothing for some people, but make a difference for others. Steve has just lost his wife to cancer and everything they had is gone due to the treatment. He now lives in the shelter for the homeless. So we know each other.

Just like other homeless people, he didn’t think he needed anything. But once he mentioned to me he needed eye glasses. His voice hesitated a bit, he looked down, and it appeared like he thought such a request was just a dream. Too much to hope for? It was as if his wish were known by me only.

I submitted an application for him to a program that is supposed to provide a free eye examination and glasses. Three months later, I phoned to ask what was up with the appointment but they told me there was a cash (现金)flow problem until late summer.

Steve showed disappointment, thanked me and started to walk away. I said, “Hold on, I will figure out a way to get you an eye examination and glasses.” His face lit up a tiny bit. He had seen some of the things I have done for other people in our shelter and to me it looked like he might have a line of hope.

I took a picture of him and posted his picture and his story in the Twitter. In about 4 days, eight people from around the world donated $25 each and one person donated $40 and I made up the rest to get him an eye exam and glasses.

Steve picked up his glasses on Wednesday: May 11th, 2011. Today Steve has returned to a previous job he had in a nearby car wash. Because he now has glasses he will be able to see what he is doing while cleaning the vehicles. He is starting a second job at a pet center next week!

Four ways to Improve Your Memory

Have you ever imagined the benefits that a good memory can bring to you? Being able to remember important pieces of information can give you a powerful advantage in your life.___16__. Here are four ways to improve your memory

Make the most of your imagination. ___17___For example, to remember where you have left your car keys, pretend to hold a camera to your eyes, focus on the scene, and click the image into your memory when you are leaving. This technique works with almost everything you want to remember, as the roll of films in your mind is endless.

Try to practice. There are lots of ways to do this: try to remember which day of the week your last birthday was.__18___Try to remember all the ping-pong finalists and the winner. If you can try to remember the scores as well, it would be even better to practice. It won’t be long before your daily practice pays off, making your mind sharper and more adaptable.

Get physical exercise. Physical exercise not only improves memory but also helps you think faster. A combination of mental and physical activity can protect your memory. It is known that the brain’s processing speed gradually slows as you age.____19____

__20______Mental exercises are as important as physical ones to keep one’s brain power. Take up word games like crossword puzzles. Memorize favorite poems and read challenging books or articles that encourage you to expand your interests. Any activity that requires you to think and concentrate will challenge your brain. And your brain will develop better on the challenge.

A. Exercise your brain.111]

B. Play more games.

C. Fortunately, staying physically fit can avoid some of the effects of age on the brain.

D. In fact, the ability to remember things is necessary to your success.

E. Then extend this to the birthdays of all your family members.

Everyone knows that the Frenchmen are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail?

At least one group of people is certain that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企业家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile (敌意的) to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒).   36   Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green – eyed monster” and the UK is its home.

Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money.  37    Those given a little were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others – but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this.

38   . But there is also opposite evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world’s fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either.

“It is not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. “It’s people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.”

39   They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires.   40  It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them.

A. This seems to prove that the entrepreneurs were right to complain.

B. The one who owns most money in the end is the winner.

C. As a result, the survey said, entrepreneurs were “unloved, unwanted and misunderstood.”

D. It is not true that British people are born jealous of others` success.

E. Some were given a little, others a great deal.

F. But instead of being happy they complain that nobody loves them.

G. Perhaps it is the entrepreneurs who are the problem.

I ever worked as a tour guide. One day I saw advertisement in the newspaper. I rang up the company, but I was given the job immediate. They asked me to take a tour around the city next morning. A few months later, I was invited to explore Jordan for a few weeks. I knew the time had come to  39  the final preparations. I planned out my trips,  40  my flights and sold my car (my last strong tie to my old life)before  41  . And finally, I was on my way to New Zealand.

Since quitting my job, I’ve sailed off the coast of Italy and Greece; dived in Bali; ridden horses across western Mongolia; slept  42  the stars on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Not once have I  43  my decision to leave my job in Washington DC. Through all this, I have achieved my  44  of becoming a writer.
