As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn't grow up with them. They don't have simple models of how they should work, what to do when something doesn't work or where to go for help. We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.
I think there is huge potential(潜力) and we are designing it. The ability to connect to friends, who remember the same movies and news and music,is really important, especially as people get old. They end up in retirement homes and they aren't always close to their friends. Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing.
My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail. She was born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was 3.She was totally deaf for many years, until age 53,when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her. But before then, her friends couldn't call her on the phone,so they insisted (坚持) she use e-mail to communicate with them.
Young people don't even think of the Internet as technology. It’s just there, and they use it. There’s been a very interesting change in communications styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren't willing to make phone calls. And they think of e-mail as old-fashioned and slow.
The reason why teens don't make phone calls seems to be that they don’t know what to say. When they call they often stop for a while. They don't know what to say,and there's this silence. On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it's okay if you don't answer. You might have been distracted (心烦意乱的).It's not considered rude. But it is considered strange if you're in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking.
28. What is the trouble that old people meet when surfing the Internet?
A. They don’t know how to use some applications.
B. They have to buy electronic productions at a high price.
C. There is no professional teacher to teach them how to use the Internet.
D. They have no friends to communicate with online.
29. We can infer from the passage that the author is a ________.
A. company manager B. program designer
C. college professor D. mobile phone designer
30. What do the young people think of the Internet according to the passage?
A. Interesting. B. Amazing. C. Boring. D. Common.
31. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Teens face challenges when taking phone calls with the old.
B. The author's mother is still using e-mail to communicate with others after
getting ear aids.
C. Teens like to send texts to communicate with others in order to avoid
embarrassment.
D. Most people consider e-mail as the most old-fashioned tool to communicate
with others.
Selfie
Social media and the mobile web have given rise to a strange phenomenon called the selfie(自拍). It refers to a picture of yourself, usually shared on any social networking website.
41 Some selfies are extreme close-ups(特写镜头), and others show part of an arm held straight outward. A few of them even feature the subject standing in front of a bathroom mirror.
Everyone takes selfies, but the younger crowd seems to be especially involved in the trend. Young people are relatively heavier digital users. They are interested in staying connected to their friends. 42
There are also kinds of psychological factors driving people to take a selfie and upload it to a social networking site. 43 A quick and easy way to attract other's attention is to get "likes" and comments from friends. Secondly, it's human nature to show off your own great achievements. When you feel good about yourself or look good, it's far too easy to take out your phone and document it all through one or several selfies. 44 That's right. Sometimes people are bored at work, bored at school, bored at home and even bored on the toilet. Last but not least, social media is about being social! If that means uploading as many selfies as possible, then so be it. It's fun, and it's a cool way to sort of document your own life.
Finally, there are things to be mindful of when you're posting. It's easy to think you're sharing a photo with a few people. 45 So don't post anything online, selfie especially.
A. There are lots of selfie styles.
B. The rise of selfies has become universal.
C. Social media, to some extent, is the driving force of their selfie activity.
D. The desire to take, post and get "likes" on selfies goes back to a biological behavior.
E. But the whole world of social media is public and every individual can get access to it.
F. There are also people who will take selfies because they have nothing else better to do.
G. The leading factor is that people want to get attention from as many people as possible.
Admit it or not, many of us see that higher education equals a diploma, which in turns provides us with opportunities for a better life. But is that all college means?
“As tuition costs have skyrocketed, it makes sense (33) ______ people might try to get some of the benefits of college without paying,” commented the Atlantic. The full tuition at Yale for the 2014-2015 school year is $63,250. This breaks down to over $7,000 per month, while Dumas ,a 28-year-old Canadian, spent only a few hundred dollars at Yale in 2009, couch-surfing (作沙发客) for about a month and (34) ______ (take) classes.
However, Ollivier Dyens, deputy provost (院长) of student life and learning at Mcgill University, points out that most people go to college mainly to get a diploma. One of the benefits of a college diploma is that (35) ______ can help you earn more money. In 2012, young adults with a high school degree earned an average of $30,000, (36) ______ those with a college degree earned an average of $46,900 in the US.
According to Dumas, the best advantage of college is networking. “The kind of people I met in Berkeley or in Yale, I don’t know anywhere else in the world where so many smart, cool, open-minded, crazy people (37) ______ be concentrated,” he said.
Furthermore, a college is (38) ______ you discover what learning is about. “This will be the period when you go from teacher-taught to master-inspired, after which you must become a self-learner. The learning skills you acquire will be something you will cherish forever”, (39) ______ (write) to his daughter by Kai-Fu Lee, one of the most successful Chinese professional managers.
So (40)______ do you expect from college? A diploma, like-minded people, or simply a learning experience?
Windows8, apart from Windows95, is the biggest surprise and the only version of Microsoft’s operating system that has been changed from the core(核心)when compared to its former one.
However, a recent study has shown that under 20% of business owners would be willing to upgrade to the new version of Windows. The reason for this remains to be discussed and debated, and we will try to throw light on this research by providing you with some of the most common advantages and disadvantages of Windows8.
Generally speaking, there are a great number of plus sides related to upgrading from Windows7 to Windows8.
Speed—This is the biggest advantage to mention. Boot time has been reported to be up to nine times shorter than that with Windows7.
New passwords—Instead of typing your passwords, Windows8 will let you use gestures on your favorite photos to enter your password. This is not only practical but also extremely cool!
Windows8 experience—Apart from computers, Windows8 will be used on all devices, including smart phones, tablet PCs and so on. Also, owing to the fact that it has been specifically designed with touch screen users in mind, Windows8, besides using keyboard and mouse, will offer a whole new user experience.
However, there are still some disadvantages.
The first one that has to be mentioned is that there is no Start Menu from Windows. Yes, there is no Start button in the lower left corner, and this might be a real puzzle of many Windows users. Also, many users have had a problem to get used to the new interface introduced by Windows8. The biggest problem that is worth noticing is that Windows8 was originally designed for touch screen users, and this may have a bad effect on desktop users who have gotten used to doing everything with the help of their keyboard and mouse.
32. What does “plus sides” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?

A. Start Menu is hidden in the lower left corner
B. they have to use fingerprints instead of button
C. keyboard and mouse can’t be used any longer
D. they don’t get accustomed to the new interface

A simple flower made headlines in the British press last week. How could that be? British Prime Minister David Cameron and his ministers were attending a reception(招待会)hosted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. They insisted on wearing poppies (罂粟花) in their buttonholes.
What's wrong with that?
According to the Global Times, Chinese officials had clearly asked the UK delegation not to wear poppies. The British said that poppies meant a great deal to them on that day and they would wear them all the same.
So what's the importance of the poppy? It's a flower which has different cultural and symbolic meanings for British and Chinese people.
From the Chinese point of view, the poppy is a symbol of China's humiliation(耻辱) at the hands of European powers in the Opium Wars(鸦片战争) of the 19th century. Britain forced China to open the borders to trade — including in the opium — which was made from poppies grown in India.
Yet from the British viewpoint the poppy is a reminder of the killing during World War Ⅰ. Red poppies grew on the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium where many thousands of British soldiers died or were buried. Since then, Poppy Day (November 11 ) has become a time in the UK to wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of British soldiers and civilians in times of war.
So you can see that the poppy sets off strong feelings in the hearts of Chinese and British people for different reasons. And it makes sense for us to try to understand each other's standpoint.
Of course cultural differences can also be interesting and funny. And what one nation thinks is an acceptable gift may be viewed differently by their guest from overseas. US President Barack Obama gave a gift of an iPod to Britain's Queen — a dull person with no interest in music. Obama also presented Gordon Brown with a fine selection of American movies. But they were in US format and impossible to play on British DVD players.
Many countries have diplomats(外交官)stationed overseas. Diplomats provide information and advice to their governments back home. However, sometimes it would seem that even diplomats can overlook the cultural importance of a small flower.

A. October 1 B. November 11 C. December 31 D. January 1

Recently, our school has held the meaningful discussion on whether it is necessary for students to have classes on weekends. Some of our classmates believe we should have classes on weekends, because we can make fully use of the time to review the lessons we had learnt. Some others are against the opinion, saying we had better to have a good rest on weekends so that we can work effective during the weekdays. The rest agree with neither of the opinion. Keep the balance between work and play are both important for us. They suggest one day of the weekend should used to learn our lessons and during the other day we do something interested or have a rest.

When Stephen Hawking published A Brief History of Time in 1989, the reactions of the public were quite different from those of scientific circles. People who were not scientists described the book as a masterpiece. They said the book helped them understand what a very complex world astrophysics was. But scientists responded differently. They claimed the book was not scientific enough and relied too much on guessing, rather than on solid facts. Despite these conflicting views, the book has been wildly popular. Since its release in 1989, over 5.5 million copies have been sold with translations published in 33 different languages.
A Brief History of Time covers a broad and diverse range of topics regarding the nature of the universe and time. Did time actually have a beginning? Does time have an end? Is the universe infinite? Hawking deals with these interesting issues only after reviewing former theories that tried to unlock the mysteries of the universe. These included Galileo’s and Newton’s works. Of course, but even more importantly, Hawking raises questions on Einstein’s theory of relativity (which deals with the infinitely large) as well as his work in quantum mechanics (which deals with the infinitely small).
Hawking studied these theories, as well as cosmology, during his education at Oxford University in England. He explained his love for physics as an extension of mathematics: “To me, mathematics is just a tool with which to do physics.”
In A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes, Hawking explores unknown areas of deep space. He builds his observations on the idea that “At one point, the earth we now walk on was distributed so tenuously (稀薄地) that a gram of soil would have occupied a column the size of an entire planet … In a sense, each of us has been inside a star; in a sense, each of us has been in the vast empty space between stars; and — if the universe ever had a beginning — each of us was there!”
He is referring to a time before the Big Bang, when all of the matter on and surrounding earth did not exist as it does today. Rather, that matter took shape through temperature and pressure at the centre of a star. As a result of this pressure and temperature, the star, or supernova, exploded. Physicists are still trying to create mathematical models that come close to representing the evolution of the universe from that time forward.
