A. present B. qualified C. available D. renewable
Margaret, married with two small children, has been working for the last seven years as a night cleaner, cleaning offices in a big building.
She got trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her elder child became seriously ill. “I would have liked to go back to it , but the shifts(工作班次)are all wrong for me, as I have to be home to get the children up and off to school.”
So she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week for just £ 90, before tax and insurance. “It’s better than it was last year, but I still think that people who work ‘unsocial hours’ should get a bit extra.”
The hours she’s chosen to work mean that she sees plenty of the children, but very little of her husband. However, she doesn’t think that puts any pressure on their relationship.
Her work isn’t physically very hard, but it’s not exactly pleasant, either. “I do get angry with people who leave their offices like a place for raising pigs. If they realized people like me have to do it, perhaps they’d be a bit more careful.”
The fact that she’s working all night doesn’t worry Margaret at all. Unlike some dark buildings at night, the building where she works is fully lit, and the women work in groups of three. “Since I’ve got to be here, I try to enjoy myself-and I usually do, together with the other girls. We all have a good laugh, so the time never drags.”
Another challenge Margaret has to face is the reaction of other people when she tells them what she does for a living. “They think you’re a cleaner because you don’t know how to read and write,” said Margaret. “I used to think what my parents would say if they knew what I’d been doing, but I don’t think that way any more. I don’t dislike the work though I can’t say I’m mad about it.”
24.Margaret quit her job as a nurse because ______ .
A.she wanted to earn more money to support her family
B.she had suffered a lot of mental pressure
C.she needed the right time to look after her children
D.she felt tired of taking care of patients
25.Margaret gets angry with people who work in the office because ______ .
A.they never clean their offices B.they look down upon cleaners
C.they never do their work carefully D. they always make a mess in their offices
26.When at work, Margaret feels ______ .
A.light-hearted because of her fellow workers B.happy because the building is fully lit
C.tired because of the heavy workload D.bored because time passes slowly
27.The underlined part in the last paragraph implies that Margaret’s parents would _____ .
A.help care for her children B.regret what they had said
C.show sympathy for her D.feel disappointed with her
First lady’s campaign brings change
WASHINGTON (AP) — Wal-Mart(沃尔玛) is putting special labels(标签)on some products to help shoppers quickly notice healthier ones. Millions of schoolchildren are helping themselves to vegetables from salad bars in their lunchrooms, and kids’ meals at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants come with a side of fruit or vegetables and a glass of low-fat milk.
These changes are taking place due to the campaign against childhood fatness, for which the first lady Michelle Obama began fighting three years ago.
Fatness has become a serious problem in the country. About one-third of U.S. children are overweight, which puts them at increased risk for any number of deadly illnesses, including high blood pressure and heart disease.
Still, Mrs. Obama faces challenge. Not everyone welcomes her effort. Some blame her for going too far and say she has no right to tell what people should and shouldn’t eat. But nutrition supporters and others praise her for using her influence to help bring interests to the table. They said the first lady has raised public awareness about fatness, which will help decrease childhood fatness rates.
There is evidence of small decrease in childhood fatness rates in some parts of the country. New York reported a 5.5 percent drop in fatness rates in kindergarteners through eighth-graders between the 2006-07 and 2010-11 school years. In Philadelphia, the drop was 4.7 percent among students in grades K-12.
Fighting against children fatness is hard work, but it’s well worth the effort. The first lady is planning a promotional tour. She has been talking up the campaign against childhood fatness on daytime and late-night TV shows and on the radio. She also plans discussions next week on Google and Twitter.
“We’ve been spending a lot of time educating and re-educating families and kids on how to eat, what to eat,” the first lady said. “We’re starting to see some changes and we’re starting to show some improvement.”

Japanese Students Suffer from Pressure
Last April,15-year-old Rei Iwasaki stopped her piano and flute lessons and began to study every day of the week. Her parents paid to send her to a "cram school(灌输式教学模式的学校)."She wanted very much to pass her exams.
In February she did pass an all-day, five-subject examination and entered the high school she hoped to enter.
Thirteen-year-old Akio Yoshiwara wasn't so lucky. Unable to take the pressure of the exams, he hanged himself in February. He left a suicide(自杀) note which said, "I did my best in this dear life, but it's no good."
Suicides are now a common part of life among students in Japan. The cause is the incredible pressure of the "examination hell."
Even a number of teachers are committing suicide each year. When some students broke windows in a school near Tokyo, the principal blamed himself and wrote the following note: "The incidents were due to the lack of appropriate measures by the principal and I apologize. I am very tired.
The Japanese educational system is much different from the American system. It is perhaps the most regimented(严密组织的) school system in any of the industrialized nations.
Boys and girls wear uniforms and go to school six days a week --- 240 days a year compared to 180 in the U.S. Ninety- five percent graduate from high school compared to seventy-five percent in the U.S.
Students don't ask questions in class but only listen respectfully to the teachers. And every few years students are tested to see which school they will enter next. There is stiff competition for the "best" schools.
The result is a well-informed, disciplined student, ideal for factory and company work and excellent at learning specialized skills. But there is little fun in education, little creativity and the incredible pressure of "examination hell."

Simple ways to get happy
We are not suggesting that you can reach a permanent state called “happiness” and remain there. But there are many ways to turn the path of anxiety, anger, and sadness into a state of happiness. Here are four ideas to get you started. 36
● Laugh out loud
Just expecting a happy, funny event can raise levels of pleasure-causing hormones (荷尔蒙) and lower production of stress hormones. Researchers at the University of California tested 16 men who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it. 37 When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones dropped greatly, while their levels of pleasure-causing hormones rose 27 percent.
● Do one thing at a time
Edward Suarez, professor of medical psychology at Duck, found that people who do several things at the same time are more likely to have high blood pressure. 38 Instead of talking on the phone while cleaning the kitchen, sit down in a comfortable chair and turn your entire attention over to the conversation.
● 39
Although relationships help take away stress, sometimes you need time to recharge and reflect on your own. Take yourself out to lunch or to a movie, or simply spend an afternoon reading at home, or looking through books in a bookstore.
● Practice mindfulness
40 Instead of worrying about your check-up tomorrow while having dinner with your family, focus on the here and now — food, the company, and the conversation.
| A. Spend time alone. B. Focus on the present. C. Take care of the soul. D. Take that finding seriously. E. Choose the ones that work for you. F. They started experiencing biological changes right away. G. Find a quiet place near your house and make it your secret place to escape. |
Some time ago, a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became more upset when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.
Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift box to her father next morning and said, “This is for you, daddy.” The father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box empty. He spoke to her in a harsh manner, “Don't you know, young lady, when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package?”
The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, “Oh Daddy, it is not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was full." The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his little girl and he begged her to forgive his unnecessary anger.
An accident took the life of the child only a short time later and it is told that the father kept the golden box by his bed for all the years of his life and whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box and take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.
In a very real sense, each of us as human beings has been given a golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone can hold.

We had it all
We thought we had it all-a beautiful house, three healthy children and one more on the way, two cars—and we loved it. We spent money like it was going out of style. Then the market turned and my husband’s job as a bigwig(大人物)at a construction company was gong. The company was closing down for ever.
We both started looking for jobs right away, but there weren’t any to be found. With each passing day
our panic increased and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through. The more we pulled together, the closer we got. I felt feelings of great love for my husband that I hadn’t felt in years. ①
That’s why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation. I knew that he had no control over the economy, however, he constantly degraded(降低…身份)himself and his spirit sunk lower with each unkind comment. I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job. ②
Finally, one afternoon I pulled him aside and said, “We have four healthy children. That’s what’s important. That makes you a rich man.”
“But what if we lose the house? They’ll hate me-you’ll hate me,” he replied.
I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look me in the eye.③
“If we live in a cardboard box on the empty place across the street I will be happy-as long as I have you.” I smiled again as I realized that I wasn’t saying it. Somehow, in all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said “I do”.
I could see relief wash through him as his shoulders and neck relaxed and the tension left his body. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadn’t in quite some time.④
We are still struggling financially, but I consider us well-off because we have something that money can’t buy and no one can take away from us.

Harvard University in the United States has been ranked as the university with the best "reputation" in the world.
The Times Higher Education magazine has listed 200 top universities all over the world based on how they are regarded by a group of international college teachers. That is to say the list measures how universities are regarded, rather than how they actually performed.
A subjective, word-of-mouth(口碑的)quality such as "reputation" has genuine economic value for universities, said Simon Marginson, professor of higher education at the University of Melbourne in Australia.
"Reputation is not just an impression, though it might be not as reliable as performance by objective indicators(客观指标)," said Prof Marginson.
Based on the views of 13,000 college teachers around the world, it confirms the power of the big US universities, which dominate this list. Seven of the top 10 are US universities, headed by Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Furthermore, 14 of the top 20 are from the US. Cambridge is the highest ranking UK university in the list, in third place, with Oxford ranked as sixth.
For students applying to university, reputation might be hard to quantify, but was an important part of the attractiveness, said the president of Cambridge University's students' union, Rahul Mansigani.
"Reputation makes a huge difference. If there is an idea that somewhere is great, it will get lots of good people applying whether it's true or not. Factors such as a sense of history and the presence of outstanding college teachers were part of the reputation of Cambridge," he said.
65. The underlined word “dominate” in Paragraph 5 probably means __________.
A. affect B. decide C. control D. improve
66. What can be inferred from the text?
A. No Asian universities are among the Top 10. B. At least five UK universities are among Top 20.
