Ask about the foods that have taken control of the world and you’re likely to hear about Coca-Cola and McDonald. But in fact, the most successful food ever produced flies far under the radar — it’s instant noodles (方便面).
A new book, The Noodle Narratives, written by three US anthropologists(人类学家) analyzes the sharp rise of instant noodles, from its birth in postwar Japan to its sales of over 100 billion in one year worldwide. And they make their arguments: instant noodles do good to the world by relieving the hunger of millions of people around the world. These noodles, they write, help the low-income people to support themselves when the situation gets tough.
“They’re cheap and tasty,” one of the writers says. “And they can be changed to everyone’s cultural taste.” In Thailand, instant noodle is made more delicious by adding lemongrass(柠檬草) and cilantro(香菜). Mexicans can buy noodle soup cups with shrimp, lime and habanero (墨西哥辣椒), among other flavors. In Japan, the birthplace of instant noodles, the demand for novel noodle products is so big that producers introduce 600 new flavors a year.
While not nutritious, instant noodles are a hunger killer for low-income populations. The fat contained in the noodles keeps you feeling full longer. Once you add water, instant noodles become soup that provides longer feeling of fullness than noodles alone. And that helps explain why the noodles have become main products of the hungry world.
But why can’t the urban poor eat something more nutritious than this highly processed food? The reality is that in any cities, the poor lack alternatives that are more healthful than instant noodles.
One way to help the poor who rely on instant noodles, they point out, is to make the noodles more nutritious: they could be lower-fat and higher-fiber, with vitamins added, though that will lead to a slightly higher price.
4. What does the underlined phrase in the first paragraph mean?
A. Receiving less attention.
B. Being better known.
C. Costing much less.
D. Having much less importance.
5. In what way are instant noodles beneficial, according to the anthropologists?
A. They come in a wide variety of flavors.
B. They help feed low-income populations.
C. They are a wonderful choice for people who don’t cook.
D. They help many businesses make money.
6. All of the following help explain why instant noodles have become main food for the poor except ____.
A. the noodles are cheap
B. the noodles make them feel full longer
C. the noodles are affordable and more healthful than other alternatives.
D. the noodle’s many flavors are a reminder of their own cultures.

House-sitting
In many countries of the world people do what is called house-sitting. It means that if owners of the house are going away, they want someone to come into their house and look after the house and maybe pets while they are away.
In Australia, many people travel. After people retire, they might buy a van and travel all over the country. 31 .
So if someone wants to travel or go away for some reason, they might want someone in their house to care for it and keep the gardens tidy. House-sitters might have to care for pets. Also, quite a few people have swimming pools in their back yards and they need cleaning. 32 I feel it is a great way of seeing the country, because you go and stay in a new city, get to meet new people, and have time to go sightseeing in a new area.
33 There are websites where you find the advertisements by people who want to travel, and by replying to the advertisements, you can make arrangements to go and look after their houses.
There are some requirements to be a house-sitter. You must be a trusted person, so that the house owner knows you will not steal anything. You must be able to go when the house owner wants you to go, so you need lots of free time. 34 You need to be good with pets, able to care for cats and dogs, or other pets they may have.
Some house-sitting jobs are just for a few days or a couple of weeks while the house owners have a short holiday. Sometimes it is for much longer. We have had a house-sitting job for six months, while the house owner travelled to Europe.
35 Then you can travel to many different countries and stay there. One of the important things to get is references from the house owners for whom you have done house-sitting. A reference is a written letter to say that you are trustworthy and have looked after their house well. You can show these letters to future house owners and they know you will do a good job.
A. I have done house-sitting many times.
B. Thousands of people do this all the time.
C. It is also possible to do house-sitting in other countries.
D. Generally you have many opportunities to get a house-sitting job.
E. You must take a little care over what your description says about you.
F. This is an international house-sitting service for all city and country areas.
G. You must have a good car, so you can travel to different parts of the country.
Finding the Real You
Psychometric testing — personality testing — has been very popular nowadays as studies show their results to be three times more accurate in predicting your job performance. These tests are now included in almost all graduate recruitment (招聘) and are widely used in the selection of managers.
The most popular of these personality tests is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). It is based on the theory that we are born with a tendency to one personality type which stays more or less fixed throughout life. You answer 88 questions and are then given your “type”, such as Outgoing or Quiet, Feeling or Thinking.
Critics of personality testing raise doubts about “social engineering”. Psychologist Dr. Colin Gill warns that the “popular” personality traits (特性) have their disadvantages. “People who are extremely open to new experiences can be butterflies, going from one idea to the next without mastering any of them.” However, the psychometric test is here to stay, which may be why a whole sub-industry on cheating personality tests has sprung up. “It’s possible to cheat,” admits Gill, “but having to pretend to be the person you are at work will be tiring and unhappy and probably short-lived.”
So can we change our personality? “Your basic personality is fixed by the time you’re 21,” says Gill, “but it can be affected by motivation and intelligence. If you didn’t have the personality type to be a doctor but desperately wanted to be one and were intelligent enough to master the skills, you could still go ahead. But trying to go too much against type for too long requires much energy and is actually to be suffered for long. I think it’s why we’re seeing this trend for downshifting — too many people trying to fit in to a type that they aren’t really suited for.”
Our interest in personality now exists in every part of our lives. If you ask an expert for advice on anything, you’ll probably be quizzed about your personality. But if personality tests have any value to us, perhaps it is to free us from the idea that all of us are full of potential, and remind us of what we are. As they say in one test when they ask for your age: pick the one you are, not the one you wish you were.
32. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is based on the belief that __________.
A. personality is largely decided from birth
B. certain personality traits are common
C. some personality types are better than others
D. personality traits are various from time to time
33. According to Dr. Gill, what is the problem with personality tests?
A. The results could be opposite to what employers want.
B. People can easily lie about their true abilities.
C. Employers often find the results unclear.
D. They may have a negative effect on takers.
34. In Dr. Gill’s view, how easy is it to change your personality?
A. It’s possible in your adult life.
B. It’s easy if you have great motivation.
C. It’s unlikely because it requires much energy.
D. It’s difficult before the age of 21.
35. What final conclusion does the author reach about the value of personality tests?
A. They are of doubtful value to employers.
B. They are not really worth doing.
C. They can strengthen the idea we have of our abilities.
D. They may encourage greater realism.

After travelling many times with my family members, I went alone to Italy for a long weekend. I traveled by a train and checked into my hotel before exploring the beauti
ful town. I went out for dinner alone, that meant I could watch people and took in the atmosphere. The next day I went to Lake Garda and took some lovely picture. I then read a book and sat under the sun for a few hours! I had a really amazed time. I think the best thing about traveling alone is you can be selfish and do exactly what you want to. You are in control of your day and fun, but my advice is to take the opportunity to travelling alone. As long as you stay safely, you will have a wonderful time!

Yes. Joe Cheng, who plays the most popular boy in high school in the popular Taiwanese drama “It Started with a Kiss.”
