Now most children chat daily either online or through their mobile phones, They are connecting to a huge number of other children all over the world. Some are shy “in real life” but are confident to communicate with others online; others find support from people of their own age on relationship issues, or problems at home.

Sometimes the online world, just like the real world, can introduce problems, such as arguments, Going online is great fun, but there are also a few people who use the Internet for offensive(冒犯性的) or illegal aims. Children must be made aware of both the good things and the dangers.

To keep children safe your management must cover the family computer. Just as you decide which TV programs are suitable, you need to do the same for the websites and chat rooms your children visit. Remind your children that online friends are still strangers. Reminding them of the risks will keep them alert(警惕).

Computer studies are part of schoolwork now, so it’s likely that your children may know more than you do. We get left behind when it comes to the latest gad-gets and the interactive areas of websites, like chat rooms and message boards, which are especially strange. The language of chat is strange to many parents, too. Chatters love to use abbreviations(缩写) such as: atb—all the best, bbfn—bye bye for now, culter—see you later, grt—great, Idk—I don’t know, imbl—it must be love, kit—keep it touch, paw—parents are watching, lol—laugh out loud, xInt—excellent!

Today is Sarah’s birthday. She is seventy-five. We asked a few old friends to dinner.

Like most elderly people, I suppose, we spent most of the evening talking about old times. Thirty years ago, the village used to be a quiet place. Now it has changed. Every Sunday hundreds of cars pass through the village at what I think a dangerous speed. They make the village almost as noisy as the streets of a large town. As a boy I enjoyed riding on the backs of the farm horses. Things are different now. Today there are very few horses working on the farms. The farm workers today drive tractors, not horses. A man is not of much use on a farm unless he knows all about machines. Now almost every house in the village has a TV set. Is it a good thing for children to spend the evening sitting in front of a TV set? When I was young I did not waste my time indoors. I would spend the long summer evenings outdoors. I would play with my friends, go fishing or walk by the river. When my grandchildren asked me the reason why I haven’t bought a TV set, I tell them there are many books I still want to read. I can’t find time for both reading and watching TV.

10. Which is NOT right according to the passage?

   A. In the past the village was a quiet place.

   B. It is a good time for children to watch TV all evening.

C. On Sundays many cars pass through the village at a dangerous speed.

D. When I was young I didn’t waste my time indoors.

11. I would rather _______ than _______.

   A. watch TV; do some reading    B. play with friends; go fishing

C. do some reading; watch TV    D. go fishing; play with friends

S= student;   M=Michael

S: Professor Michael, nowadays many   61   (teenager) can’t get along well with their friends. I’d appreciate   62   if you can give us some suggestions.

M: Ok. First, friends with the same interests should be   63   (choose). Second, you should keep in touch   64   each other and sometimes you can tell him everything. Third, a real friend is always   65   (concern) about you. When you are in trouble, he can be the first   66   (give) you a hand.

S: I see. But friendship gradually   67   (change) as we get older. What can we do with it?

M: Of course, every coin has two sides,   68  there is no doubt that friendship means giving more, and good friends should be   69   (reliable) than other common friends even though they have disagreements.

S: I   70   (entire) agree with you.

When people finish eating, they should keep the left food in a refrigerator below 5℃and shouldn’t store it for too long. At room temperature, about 20℃, the amount of micro-organisms can increase very quickly. But temperatures above 60℃ or below 5℃ control the growth of micro-organisms.    49
