I tend to accept any idea put forward by experts on TV. One day, a sociologist proposed(提出,建议) that the    16    society has been consuming (消费)modern humans little by little. For fear that I would become a victim(受害者)of the consumer society, I   17  hurried to a bicycle shop in my neighborhood.   18  the shopkeeper Mr. Johnson was selling me the bicycle, he said, “This is the best thing you   19  have done. Life has become hopelessly   20  . A bicycle is simple, and it brings to you   21  things: fresh air, sunshine and exercise.” I agreed. Happy as a child, I got on the bicycle and headed out onto the streets. After some time, I   22  at the other end of the town. He fixed a metal box with buttons   33  the seat, and said, “Is there anything better than this oven(烤箱) when you feel   34  on your way? I can give you a special discount.” I was not strong enough to   35   the offer.
“I congratulate you once more; this is the best thing you could have done,” said Mr. Johnson in the end.

A new study showed that one of the best ways to control greenhouse gas emissions(温室气体排放) is to eat less meat. In fact, the study showed that meat consumption(食用量) in developed countries should be cut by 50% per person before 2050.

Meat production and consumption are expected to rise very quickly to a high level by 2050. That’s because the global population is expected to grow from the present 7 billion to 9 billion. But also, the diets of people in many developing countries are changing. Countries that are developing rapidly are seeing a fast rise in protein consumption, especially red meat.

Dr. Eric Davidson, the president and senior scientist at the Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts, said changing the way people eat can have a great effect on greenhouse gas emissions. People in developed countries, he said, already eat much more protein than the daily requirement.

“In the developed world, there is large room for us to manage the frequency with which we eat meat. If there is a growing need for meat, that is going to end up requiring use of more nitrogen fertilizer(肥料) and production of more livestock manure(家畜粪肥), both of which end up resulting in release of various forms of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere,” he said.

Davidson said farmers should be encouraged to use fertilizers and manure in a more careful way. “ If we want to meet the greatest goal of making harmful climate change under control, we need to improve the efficiency(效能) with which we use fertilizers in agriculture. We need to improve the efficiency of the management of manure. And we also need to consider changes in dietary patterns(饮食方式). And that means hopefully better diets in the developing world and better balanced diets in the developed world,” he said.

Even if it were possible to turn off all harmful greenhouse gas emissions today, he said climate change would continue. “ But that does not mean that we can do nothing for it now, because the sooner we start to take action, the more choices our children and grandchildren will have in terms of being able to feed themselves and have comfortable lifestyles without environmental degradation(退化),” he said.

(1) According to the new study, eating less meat is ________.

A. The harms of releasing various greenhouse gases

B. The side effects of producing fertilizers and manure

C. The effects of growing need for meat on the environment

D. The ways of managing the frequency of eating meat

(3) The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to______.

A. the environment

B. climate change

C. greenhouse gases

D. the lifestyle

(4) In Dr. Eric Davidson’s opinion, _________.

A. it’s important to encourage farmers to use fertilizers

Mrs Smith’s dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house. Considering that there was no better way, Mrs Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it. “   31    . Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently, “Take this paper to the butcher, and he’s going to give you your lunch today.”

Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher’s shop. The butcher read it carefully and recognized that it was really the lady’s handwriting and soon did as he was asked to.   32

At noon, the dog came to the shop again.   33  After reading it ,he gave it half a pound of meat once more.

The next day the dog came again exactly at noon.   34   This time, the butcher did not take a look at the paper, and gave the dog its meat, for he had regarded the dog as one of his customers.

But the dog came again at four o’clock. And the same thing happened once again. To the butcher’s more surprise ,it came for the third time at six o’clock, and brought with it a third piece of paper.    35    .He said to himself, “This is a small dog. Why does Mrs. Smith give it so much meat to eat today?”

Looking at the piece of paper, he found that there were not any words on it!

A. The butcher felt a bit puzzled.

B. Give my dog half a pound of meat

What would it be like to live on Mars? Volunteers are spending eight months in an area that looks much like the surface of Mars. They are isolated(孤立)high on top of Mauna Loa, a volcanic mountain on the Big Island of Hawaii, living on a simulated(模仿的)or make-believe, Mars Base.

The project called HI-SEAS is in the charge of Kim Binsted. She says this wild environment is as close to Mars as you can find on Earth. Because it is so high, the land is not warm or rich with plants, like the rest of Hawaii.

"You will see there is really no visible plant life or animal life. And you have got this wonderful volcanic material."

Mauna Loa,2,500 meters above sea level, is geologically very similar to Olympus Mons on Mars and almost as tall as that Martian mountain. When measured from its base, deep in the ocean, Mauna Loa is the second largest mountain in our solar system, after the one on Mars.

The six member HI-SEAS crew is mostly self-sufficient. Food and supplies are brought to them. But the individuals bringing those supplies cannot communicate with volunteers inside the habitat or base.

Kim Binsted says this experiment looks at how the astronauts get along with each other."We study how well they work together, how we can keep them happy and supported, and not wanting to kill each other over these long durations(期间)."

Crew members communicate with the outside world through e-mail and blogs. They also produce video on the YouTube website, like this one from mission commander Martha Lenio.

"I am really enjoying this opportunity to live here and pretend that I'm on Mars and get to learn all sorts of new skills." One of them said.

Whoever gets there first, the trip will not be easy, says Kim Binsted.

"It is going to be challenging."

21.What do we know about Olympus Mons?

A. It is 2,500 meters above sea level.                  B. It is geologically similar to Mauna Loa.

C. It is the second largest mountain on the earth. D. It is a mountain on the Big Island of Hawaii.

22What is the purpose of the experiment?

A. To set up a space station.

B. To explore new settlement for human.

C. To study how the astronauts treat each other.

D. To prove human can live in whatever conditions.

23.Which can be the best title for the next?

A. Volunteers First Explore Mars                        B. Volunteers Experience Life in Hawaii

C. Volunteers Get Taste of Mars in Hawaii           D. Volunteers Study the Environment on Mars

To make our digestive (消化的) system work well, we should avoid doing some things after having a meal, for example, drinking water. It is true that a person should drink 8 glasses of water every day to stay healthy. However, drinking water right after eating or even during a meal may disrupt (扰乱) digestion. It might affect on the natural levels of acid and bile (酸和胆汁) that are necessary for proper digestion. What’s more, drinking cold water after eating might slow down (减慢)digestion. So try to avoid drinking water at least an hour after a meal, and avoid drinking it while eating.

Though walking after eating is healthy, doing it immediately after a meal is not. Doing so will make it difficult for the digestive system to take in nutrients (营养) from the food. Besides, the blood will flow towards other parts of the body, like legs, hands, etc., which will make the digestive tract not have enough amount of blood flow that is needed for proper digestion. So we should wait for at least 2 hours after eating, and then begin exercising.

Sleeping should also be avoided right after eating. This is because going to bed right after a meal will lead to improper digestion. What’s more, such a habit will also make you put on a lot of weight. Therefore, wait for an hour or two, and then go to sleep.

Many of us have the habit of drinking tea just after lunch or dinner, which is really unhealthy. The tea leaves are rich in acid which prevents the protein in the food from digesting. The best time to drink tea is at least one hour after eating.

Eating fruits right after a meal may fill the stomach with air and cause discomfort. They will also take time to reach the digestive tract, disturbing the entire process of digestion. To protect your stomach from digestive problems, eat fruits before or after 1-2 hours of a meal.

In a word, if you avoid doing all the above things after eating, you will surely make your digestion easy, and you will be less likely to have digestive problems.

History books tell us that the city of Rome was set up in 152 B.C. Its a fact, however, that by 100 A.D., Rome was the centre of a big empire. It was from Syria in the east to Spain in the west, from Britain in the north to Africa in the south. All or part of 27 of todays countries were included in the Roman Empire. All of their people were ruled by one government, that of Rome. All educated people spoke the same language, Latin. And one of the empires outposts was called Londinium. This unimportant town would later become London, England, and the centre of another empire.

The Roman Empire came to and end about 1,500 years ago. Yet in some ways it is still with us. Take the letters you are reading, for example, English, like many other languages, uses the Roman alphabet (字母) while also borrowing many words. The laws of many European countries are based on ancient Roman laws. Roman ruins are seen throughout Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. In some places, Roman roads and water courses are still in use. To this day, a European in North Africa is likely to be called “Roumi”-Roman. Even modern place names are often after Ancient Rome. Both Greece and Germany have the names given by the Romans rather than the names that their own people first called them.

The history of vaccines

Few people enjoy getting shots (打针) at the doctor's office, but many of these shots are important vaccines (疫苗).   36

Vaccines got their start in Europe in the 1720s, when a British woman named Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was visiting Turkey (a country of southwest Asia and southeast Europe). She saw Turkish doctors purposefully inoculating (为做预防接种) people with small amounts of smallpox, which is a painful, deadly disease. Soon those patients not only got better, but then proved to be immune (免疫的) to the disease.   37

Lady Montagu quickly returned to England, excited to share this new medical treatment. But inoculation took many years to catch on. One problem was that no one had a way of inoculating people safely.   38   Anyway, inoculation saved many people and it finally became the common practice for preventing smallpox.

39   He found that people who had caught a disease called cowpox became immune to smallpox. Cowpox was much less harmful (有的) than smallpox. Edward Jenner advised doctors to inoculate people with cowpox, which led to a very safe vaccine and far fewer outbreaks of smallpox, Finally, a French scientist named Louis Pasteur realized that Edward Jenner's idea could be used to treat other diseases.   40   Today, scientists and doctors continue to create new vaccines that could probably save millions of lives all over the world.

A. There are several kinds of vaccines.

B. Lady Montagu was very surprised to get to know that.

C. Smallpox killed as many as one in every three children.

D. They can help prevent us from getting certain diseases.

E. Sometimes, patients would suffer more health problems.

F. Since then, vaccines have been made for many other diseases.

G. Years later, another scientist Edward Jenner made a new discovery.

I will always remember my mother’s last days in this world.

On February 14th, 2008, my class went on a field trip to the beach. I had so much fun. When we returned to school, my teacher told me to go to the headmaster’s office. When I got into the office, I saw a police officer. Suddenly, I realized something was wrong. The police officer told me what had happened and we went to pick my sister up. After that, we went to the hospital and waited. Time went slowly. Finally, we got to see our mother. It was terrible.

On the next day, the headmaster came and told my two teachers what had happened. I was taking a test that day. I knew it had something to do with my mother. I kept thinking that she either died or had gotten better. How I wished that she had gotten better. When my teacher took me outside, my sister ran up to me. She started crying, “She’s gone, Terresa, mommy’s gone. She’s dead.” I couldn’t believe it. We jumped into the car and drove straight to the hospital. Most of my family were there. The silence was terrible. I knew I had to say goodbye.

Today when I look back, I still miss my mother very much, but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother, who had the biggest heart. She was an angel walking on the earth. I will always remember her as a living. When someone is asked who their hero is, they usually say someone famous, like Michael Jordan or Britney Spears. When someone asks me who my hero is, I tell them, my mother. My mother lives every day. That is what makes her a true hero.

Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.

Sometimes, the word “green” means young, fresh and growing. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow or an ox whose horns(角)had not yet developed. A century later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had no experience in war. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job.

Someone who is good at growing plants is said to have a green thumb(大拇指). The expression comes from the early 20th century. A person with a green thumb can make plants grow quickly and well.

Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling , jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster (怪物)is not a dangerous animal from outer space. It is an expression used about 400 years ago by the British writer William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”. It describes the unpleasant feeling when someone has something he wants. For example, a young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if you get a pay rise and he does not.

In most places in the world, a green light means to move ahead. In everyday speech, a green light means agree to continue with a project.

Nowadays many schools keep their students at school all day long. Students held different opinions about it.

Some students think they have more freedom and fewer chances to get in touch with society. They can't full develop their interests and hobby. Others think school is the best place to getting knowledge so they should put their heart into their lessons. Some students don't have the ability to control themselves. Once out of school, they may lose a control of themselves and do something which will affect their studies.

   A great loss--Shirley Temple dies at 85

   February 12, 2014

BY DERRIK J. LANG, Associated Press

Shirley Temple Black, who died on February 10th at age 85, wasn’t just a child star. She was the child star—the sweet little girl whose shining smile helped illumine some of the darkest days the US has known during the Great Depression.

It’s hard today to imagine the super star Shirley was once ―America’s Little Darling. By 1940, she had appeared in 43 films. Temple worked with Bill Robison in four movies, and their dance on the stairs is still a legendary(传奇的) film moment.

In the 1930s, she was so popular that she inspired dresses, toys, dishes—even a drink (alcohol-free, of course).

US President Franklin D. Roosevelt once famously said that ―as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right. Unlike so many of today’s child stars, Temple didn’t end up with her name appearing across the headlines for bad behaviors. Instead of getting her photos on front pages or struggling with drugs and alcohol, Temple went on to a second career (生涯) in diplomacy (外交), including presidential appointments as ambassador(大使) to Ghana.

Her career in public service (20 years) was longer than her career in movies (19years). The role she valued most, however, was as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

The world has lost a treasured Hollywood legend. But her movies will continue charming audiences for a very long time.

29. The word ―illumine in Paragraph l means_________.

   A. shorten          B. widen           C. brighten           D. darken

30. What part did she regard as the most important in her life?

   A. A top movie star.                     B. Her family role.

   C. Her diplomacy career.                 D. A businesswoman.

31. Where does this passage possibly come from?

   A. A film.          B. A newspaper.      C. A magazine.        D. A poster.

Dear Clement

How are you? I received your letter two days ago. Thank you for your letter.

11     People traveled in search of food and shelter or in order to flee from their enemies. Sometimes they were looking for gold or silver in order to become rich. On other occasions they were searching for rich farmland.

This is not to say that no one ever traveled just for fun. Even in ancient times, some pleasure travel occurred. During a typical season, 700,000 tourists. would crowd into the ancient city of Rome, where animals performed and magicians entertained them.    12

13  International tourist arrivals alone reached as many as 546 million in 1994 and are forecast to rise to 937 million in 2010, according to the World Trade Organization.

14   Probably the most common reason for traveling is related to our physical well-being. Actually, traveling to sports events is one of the fastest growing types of travel. In our fast developing, modern society where stress has become part of people’s life, people can rest and relax by having a change of environment and activities.

15  No one seems to doubt that travel broadens the mind. In 18th century Europe, young men would go on a Grand Tour to various countries in order to complete their education. Today the desire to travel to different countries is encouraged by modem mass media. People who travel to other countries can at the same time learn more about their own country and culture.

A. But why do people like traveling so much?

B. Throughout history, most travel was not for pleasure.

C. So they travel to a lake for a swim or to a park for a hike.

D. The improvement in transportation has also encouraged people to travel.

E. Wealthy Romans made trips to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games.

F. The growth of tourism has become a modern phenomenon experienced by all countries in the world.

G. Another important reason for traveling is to satisfy our curiosity about different places and cultures.

The days of having to remember your ID could soon be a thing of the past. The famous tourist town of Wuzhen, China, is now using facial recognition technology to act as its entry pass through the gates of the attraction. The system uses cameras to notice people as they approach the entry, and checks these against a database of registered visitors within a few seconds. The technology is thought to be up to 99.77 percent accurate and able to distinguish people better than a human.

Wuzhen is a popular tourist town with visitors going there in large numbers to see its stunning river system and museums. Baidu, a web firm often referred to as “Chinese Google”, created the system. When people now check in to their accommodation, they will have their photo taken and uploaded to a central database upon leaving and re-entering the town, the system will re-check that they are still a guest at a hotel, before allowing them back in.

The technology is being used to track the 5,000 visitors that stay in the town’s hotels every day. Yuanqing Lin, director of the Institute of deep Learning at Baidu, told The Verge, “With our technology, you don’t need to give your ID. When you are approaching a gate, it will take a photo of you and compare that photo to the database.” Wuzhen used to monitor its visitors using a ticket-entry system, but this could easily be abused. It was discovered that some people were sharing their tickets to avoid paying.

Baidu’s system is based on neural networks, which can process huge amounts of data--- more than one billion faces. As well as recognizing faces, the system can also discover facial movements, so it can’t be fooled by someone holding up a mask.

Baidu is also using the software for employee entry at its Beijing headquarters.

5.  What can be learnt about the facial recognition technology from the passage?

A. The technology could soon be a thing of the past.

Its been recently reported that on average we spend over two hours each day looking at a smartphone. That doesnt mean making calls, but using apps and browsing the Web. Spend that amount of time staring at anything.

Checking our email in a restaurant, sharing a picture of the food when it arrives, or checking a fact during a conversation only leads to reading more instead of communicating orally. Its no secret our lives are being affected by our obsession with smartphones. However, never before has this phenomenon been

displayed so vividly (生动地) as in the short YouTube film I Forgot My Phone. Though only being

online for a few days, its already been viewed more than 10.5 million times.

Ironically (讽刺地), YouTubes statistics show that the site gets a billion views per day from mobile devices, so a lot of those people watched it on their phones.

The short film, written by and starring actress Charlene de Guzman, shows groups of people in various social situations, most of which are completely attracted by their phones instead of the world

around them. Its depressing (令人沮丧的) because weve all seen it, and sad because to a certain

degree, we all do it.

On April 22, 2012, I jumped from an airplane 13, 000 feet up. What was the purpose? It was just to overcome my fear of heights.

Seven years ago, when I went to France, I couldn’t go up the Eiffel Tower because I was afraid. It seemed so high. I wanted to overcome my fear, so I could dare to go skydiving(跳伞). At first, I didn’t think I could, but I finally made it.

I don’t think that I could have jumped out of that plane without the encouragement of my wonderful friends and classmates—Yodel and Tatiana! It was a pity that we couldn’t jump together. However, as we prepared to jump, there was something special among us-- a special bond.

I made a reservation(预定)to go skydiving one week before the day of my jump. I felt nervous during the whole week, kind of blue; but mysteriously. When it was the moment to jump from the airplane, I didn’t feel any fear… I just jumped! That was wonderful! Wonderful!

There was a whole new world and the beautiful sky. I had never seen such a beautiful world! First, I felt an awful acceleration(加速) and then I felt like I was lying in the air…like a bird! I think it was an illusion, but it was wonderful!

The oncoming wind blew me strongly. It was amazing! After about 50 seconds free fall, the parachute opened. When I landed on the ground, I felt a lack of oxygen. It was difficult to breathe in during the freefall.

I was so glad that I survived and was able to overcome my fear! Everything went well! If possible, I want to jump again. My first jump is an outstanding memory for me.
