Napoga is a 12-year-old girl in Ghana(加纳), Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water. Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily(日常) cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can’t get enough clean water to keep healthy.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource(自然资源) on the earth.Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface(表面). But most of that is sea water. We can’t use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only 1% of the earth’s surface. You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga’s. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now, 34% of all kinds of fish are dying out.
How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.
Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won’t have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water:
●Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450 liters(升) each month.
●Leaky taps(漏水的龙头) waste a lot of water. Fix them right away!
●You can easily cut your 10-minute showers(沐浴) in half—and you’ll be just as clean.
●When you wash dishes, don’t let the water run.
●Only wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn’t full, you’re wasting water!

My boss’s daughter was studying in the Philippines. He asked me if my husband and I could take care of her . He thought his daughter would be able to improve her English communication skills in this way.
After days of thinking, we agreed. He then brought her here and left after 3 days. I thought that my boss’s daughter was well-mannered, but that was wrong.
After a month of staying in the Philippines, she started to show her true colors. When my husband asked her what she wanted for breakfast, she answered him in a rude way. From then on, we experienced fights at home. There was a time when we didn’t talk to her for a week as a punishment of not being good to us. What I hated most was that she didn’t care about other people’s feelings. She ate ahead of us when we were still working and didn’t leave anything for us. So we had to separate her food from ours to avoid such a problem.
The worst thing about her was that she shouted at us. I was wondering if she did this to her parents. We told this to her parents, but unfortunately I didn’t think that solved the problem. This situation lasted for almost 8 months. Our patience was tested during that time.
We tried to teach her everything we could to make her a better person, but I guess 8 months may not to be enough. We even tried to understand her and adjust for her, but it didn’t work.. I just hope that she learned something from us and from other Filipinos.

How to Restore(恢复)Balance in Life
Many of us give our time and energy generously to our family members, friends, and co-workers, but often ignore our own needs. 36 Here some people share the experiences that made them realize they had to start taking care of themselves — and what they’re doing about it.
Lighten Your Load
Before you can take care of anyone else, you need to be able to care for yourself. My own personal truth is that I am a part of God, and he does not want me to feel burdened. 37
Learn To Accept Forgiveness
I accepted forgiveness, and since then have forgiven myself, as well as all the people I considered to have caused me pain in one way or another. 38
Be Grateful
I do my own kind of gratitude meditation (沉思) every night. 39 Together, avoiding the negative energy of feeling like a victim and producing the positive force of gratitude provide me with the strength to take care of both myself and others.
Take a Walk
40 I do it slowly, and I pray. I notice that when I walk I feel better mentally and physically. I admire trees, the flowers and the sky. I realize I need to lose weight, but I don’t want to fill my head with negative self-talk. I want to have an “I can do this” mentality (思想).
A. I was used to slowing down and being gentle with myself.
B. I sit quietly, and feel grateful for the blessings I’ve received.
C. I realized that forgiving means healing.
D. I find it’s easy to forgive myself and others.
E. It may not be until we become exhausted that we start paying attention to our own needs.

Forgiveness
To forgive is a virtue(美德), but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. When traveling in England, here are some things to keep in mind.
When taking the underground in England, once on the underground train, stand clear of closing doors. They can give you a pretty hurtful knock if they hit you. When getting on or off the tube train, make sure you mind the gap (间隙)! This varies from a few inches to a foot at some of the stations.
The saying that English food is boring and tasteless isn’t true, at least not anymore. You’ll find a huge variety (种类) of international restaurants and foods, especially in London. Make sure you eat some of the old-fashioned traditional foods in pubs, and wash it down with some local beer!
Come prepared for any sort of weather — even if the day starts off well, it’s likely that the temperature will change. The best thing to do is layer (分层穿套) your clothes so that you can add or reduce as necessary.
The British are, in general, very polite people and will expect at least basic politeness from travelers. Pleases and thanks go a long way! At the same time, they like playing jokes on others.
Don’t be surprised or angry if you’re called darling, dear, dearie, flower, love, chick, chuck, me duck, son,ma’am or any other similar pet name by someone you don’t know. It’s quite normal.
England is generally quite safe, but you’ll need to be more careful in London and the other large cities, especially at night. Choose an underground train that has plenty of people in it and avoid suburban underground stations at night. There are many night buses you can catch, but try not to do this alone. A licensed taxi is often the best choice. Try and leave valuable things in your hotel room, as pickpockets (扒手) do operate in some areas. Be careful of bags especially when in some busy areas.
16. What does the author think of foods in London now?
A. They are old-fashioned. B. They are of huge variety.

17. What is advised to do in the text?
A. Have good manners in front of the British.
