Dear Diary,
Here I am in the middle of a city, 350 miles far away from our farmhouse. Do you want to know why we move last week? Dad lost his job, and as Mom explained, “He is lucky to find other one.” His new job meant I had to say goodbye to my classmate, my school and just everything else I love in the world. To make things bad, now I have to share a room to my younger sister, Maggie. Tomorrow is first day of school. I am very tiring, but I know I’ll never fall asleep.
Good night or remember, you, dear diary, is my only souvenir of my past life and my only friend. Yours
Rosemary

Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end with commercials (商业广告) thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. “Buy Super Clean Toothpaste. ”“Drink Good Wet Root Beer. ”“Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off,are you spared the unending cry of “You Need It! Buy It Now!”
The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you've traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed—new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it's fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless (鲁莽的) or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense (悬疑) story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you've got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.
The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there's a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you've sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the armrest or even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at the right time. There are just no more ways to sit.

Maybe you are an ordinary student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here are some suggestions.
36 When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First, plan your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. 37 Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. 38 When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly
. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude towards tests. 39 They help you remember your new knowledge. The world
won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
40 You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
A. There are other methods that might help you with your studies.
B. Then decide a good, regular time for study.
C. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject
D. No one can be
come a top student unless he or she works hard.
E. Plan your time carefully.
F. Make full use of class time to do your own homework.
G. No games, radios, or television.

When you watch TV programs about wild animals, it is surprising to see how an antelope can escape a lion’s attack. In the wilderness, everyone has a stunt(绝招). Even plants have their own ways of fighting off enemies.
Over millions of years of evolution(进化), plants have developed a unique defence system(防卫系统). Chemicals are widely used for survival. By making their leaves, flowers, roots and fruits poisonous (有毒的)to enemies, plants can fight back.
One such plant is the Golden Wattle tree, British scientist David Caneron has found when an animal eats the tree’s leaves, the amount(数量)of poison increase in the other leaves. “It’s like the injured leaves telephoning the others telling them to fight together against the enemy,” he said.
The tree also sends defence messages to neighboring plants by giving out a special smell. Golden Wattle trees in the nearby 45 meters will get the message and produce more poison within 10 minutes. Now, if an enemy eats too many of the trees’ leaves, it will die.
Every species of plant or tree is good at producing a special set of chemicals. A herbivore that can safely eat the leaves of one tree may be poisoned by its neighbor.
In this way, plants have developed not only their own defence system, but also shared with others. This makes it impossible for a single animal to destroy even a small area of forest.

We were late as usual. My husband had insisted on watering the flowers in the garden by himself, and when he discovered that he couldn't manage he asked me for help at the last moment. So now we had an hour to get to the airport. Luckily, there were not many cars or buses on the road and we were able to get there just in time.
We checked in and went direct to a big hall to wait for our flight (航班) to be called. We waited and waited but no announcement (通知) was made. We asked for information and the girl there told us that the plane hadn't even arrived yet. In the end there was another announcement telling us that passengers waiting for Flight LJ108 could get a free meal voucher (餐券) and that the plane hadn't left Spain for technical reasons. We thought that meant that it wasn't safe for the plane to fly. We waited again for a long time until late in the evening when we were asked to report again. This time we were given free vouchers to spend the night in a nearby hotel.
The next morning after a bad night because of all the planes taking off and landing, we were reported back to the airport. Guess what had happened while we were asleep! Our plane had arrived and taken off again. All the other passengers had been woken up in the night to catch the plane, but for some reason or others we had been forgotten. You can imagine how we felt!

Samuel looked at his sister, Emily, and said, “I wouldn’t have thought Everett would be a thief.” Emily replied, “Whoa, we don’t know that for sure.” Samuel said, “But who else could it be? He was there, he had them in his hands, and now they are missing.”
Samuel remembered two days ago when he had brought out his coin collection for Everett to see. At the end of that day, Samuel’s mother asked him to take a note to Mr. Bates down the street, so he asked his friend, “Is it okay if I leave you for a few minutes?” Everett had said, “Go ahead. I’ll clean up here,” pointing at the piles of coins on the floor. When Samuel had returned, he had done his homework, had eaten dinner, and had read for a while before bed. It was not until two days later that he realized the quarters were gone.
Emily said, “Why don’t you just ask him?” “Ask him what? Hey, Best Friend, did you steal my coin collection?” Samuel thought for a moment, deciding if that would be a good idea. The theft of his collection left him with a feeling of betrayal (背叛). “How could I have misjudged my friend?”
The next day Samuel went over to Everett’s house. Everett was acting funny. In fact, Samuel thought Everett was acting like someone with a secret. Suddenly, Everett cried, “I can’t stand it anymore!” and pulled something from underneath the chair. “Go on — open it! I was going to wait until your birthday tomorrow, but I can’t wait!”
Slowly, Samuel lifted the top of the box. Laid out in front of him were all of the quarters from his coin collection. Each quarter was in its own place in a new collection case. Each quarter shone like it was new.
Samuel felt heat rush over his neck and ears. He weakly said, “Thank you — this means ... a great deal to me.” He was thankful that Everett had cut him off before he said something bad. Everett was exactly the type of person he wanted as a friend!

It is often necessary to release a fish, that is, set it free after catching, because it is too small, or you just don’t want to take it home to eat. In some cases, releasing fish is a good measure that will help keep fish variety and build their population size. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) encourages fishermen who practice catch-and-release fishing to use a few simple skills when doing so. The advice provided below will help make sure that the fish you release will survive (存活) to bite again another day.
—When catching a fish, play it quickly and keep the fish in the water as much as possible.
Don’t use a net in landing the fish and release it quickly to prevent it from dying.
—Hold the fish gently. Do not put your fingers in its eyes. Don’t wipe the scales(鱼鳞) off the fish because it might cause it to develop a disease and reduce its chance of survival.
—Remove your hook(鱼钩) quickly. If the hook is too deep or hooked in the stomach, cut the line and leave the hook in. The hook left inside will cause no serious problem to the fish.
—Take good care of the fish by moving it gently in water. Rele
ase the fish when it begin
s to struggle and is able to swim.
—Do not hold fish in a bucket or some other containers and later decide to release it. If you are going to release a fish, do so right away.
With a little care and by following the suggestions given above, you can give the released fish a better chance of survival.

Ever since Donald Trump was elected the next president of the US, the entire Trump family has been put under a microscope(显微镜).
In China, the spotlight has been mainly focused on Trump and his daughter Ivanka. She is described on WeChat as an extremely influential role model with stunning beauty, a successful career, and a happy family.
She leads a dream life that a million girls would kill for. Yes, she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. But she got where she is by herself.
There’s always going to be articles that say people born into wealthy families are better looking and have a better family background than you, but these people do work harder than you.
Are you a loser if you were raised in an ordinary family? Should you feel guilty that you sleep eight hours a day because Ivanka sleeps five? If you just want to keep a stable(稳定的) nine-to-five job, does it mean you are not ambitious? How about if you don’t work out or eat healthy, does that mean you will not find your Mr. or Miss Right?
There is a tendency in media nowadays to encourage elitism(精英主义).They are trying to brainwash young people into thinking that they should invest(投资)a large amount of time and money in bodybuilding and appearance. They encourage lifestyle makeovers: wine tasting classes and expensive trips overseas. They make you believe that if you do as they say, you can improve the quality of your life and join the elites (社会精英).
But what’s the downside of being ordinary? Do you really need to go to the gym five days a week? Do you need to take hundreds of selfies(自拍) and Photoshop the selected ones to post on WeChat? Do you really need to break your neck and sacrifice to earn your first pot of gold only to worry constantly about how to enter high society later?
Don’t let the idea of elitism get to you. Everybody has a right to the life they want. Human beings should not be judged as a success or failure based on whether they are a part of the elite or not. As long as you lead a happy and comfortable life, why bother to chase after other people’s shadows? Choose your own life path and go for it.
12. Why does Ivanka become a hit online in the writer’s opinion?
A. She lives such a dream life that a million girls would like to kill her.
B. She gets what she has through personal efforts despite rich origin.
C. She has a better family background than ordinary people.
D. She is a role model frequently seen among ordinary people.
13. Which of the following are considered as a life belonging to the elites?
①Polish and post carefully- selected selfies on WeChat.
②Break your neck to earn your first pot of gold.
③Spare no effort to improve physical appearance.
④Sign up for wine tasting classes and oversea trips.
A. ③④
B. ②④
C. ②③
D. ①④
14. It can be inferred from the text that ____________.
A. Ivanka sleeping five hours a day makes the majority of people guilty.
B. Keeping a stable nine-to- five job will be thought of as a loser.
C. Improving the quality of life will help you enter high society.
D. Joining the elites is what more and more people dream of nowadays.
15. Which attitude towards life would the writer probably agree with?...
A. Life is like a dogsled team. If you aren’t the lead dog, the scenery never changes.
B. Life is not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.
C. There is only one success — to be able to spend your life in your own way.
D. The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.
Parents whose children show a special interest in a particular sport feel very difficult to make a decision about their children’s careers. Should they allow their children to train to become top sports men and women? For many children it means starting school work very young, and going out with friends and other interests have to take a second place. It’s very difficult to explain to a young child why he or she has to train five hours a day, even at the weekend, when most of his or her friends are playing.
Another problem is of course money. In many countries money for training is available from government for the very best young sportsmen and women. If this help can not be given, it means that it is the parents who have to find the time and the money to support their child’s development — sports clothes, transport to competitions, special equipment, etc.— can all be very expensive.
Many parents are worried that it is dangerous to start serious training in a sport at an early age. Some doctors agree that young muscles may be damaged by training before they are properly developed. Professional trainers, however, believe that it is only by training young that you can reach the top as a successful sports person. It is clear that very few people do reach the top, and both parents and children should be prepared for failure even after many years of training.

C. It’s very expensive for parents to support their child’s development in sports.
