高一英语试题

If you are like most international students, you are probably pretty comfortable reading and writing in English, but not as comfortable with listening and speaking in the language.    36

Make friends with American students. Many international students end up making friends with a lot of — or only — other international students.   37   Hanging out with natives not only naturally pushes you to improve your spoken English, but also helps you pick up cultural and social information.

Learn from American friends. Tell your American friends that you are trying to improve your listening and speaking skills, and would like them to help you. If you pronounce a word incorrectly, or misuse an idiom, you want them to tell you.   38

Increase your knowledge.   39   If you have known about the topics that are likely to be discussed in conversation, you have a much better chance of understanding people when they talk, and of being able to express yourself well.

40   If you have to explain something to someone, you have a strong desire to pronounce everything as well as you can, and find other ways to explain yourself. Finally, this becomes a good habit. Many people have asked me how I learned to speak English fluently, and I think it is because of my being a math teacher in college for years.

A. I don’t think this is a good idea.

B. You will learn much faster this way.

C. If possible, become a teacher at your school.

D. It’s a win-win opportunity for international students.

E. Read books, keep up with news and watch popular shows and movies.

F. It’s a good way to make some extra cash while improving your English.

G. Below are some tips to help you to improve your conversational skills.

86. At that time people would starve if food were difficult to find.

87. He had looked forward to meet her all day.

88. “Nothing could be best.” he thought.

89. Everybody has to eat, but do you eat healthy diet?

90. She ought to eat more vegetables, oughtn’t she to?

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind.

When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: "No pains, no gains". He hardly watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water. So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.

Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty five years ago. They were all tall and strong.

I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity(逆境) seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb's trees in ways comfort and ease never could.

Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to meet with hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.

21. With the trees planted, Doctor Gibbs often __________.

A. paid little attention to them

B. kept watering them every morning

C. talked to them to get their attention

D. beat them to make them grow deep roots

22. What does the author think of the way Doctor Gibbs planted trees?

A. Strange and harmful.                          B. Interesting and funny.

C. Cruel and unacceptable.                    D. Original and reasonable.

23. Which prayer does the author wish for his sons?

A. Meet people like Dr Gibbs in the future.

B. Be able to stand the rain and wind in their lives.

C. Have an easy life, without too much to worry about.

D. Have good luck, encountering less hardship in their life.

24. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. Prayers for my sons                    B. Doctor Gibbs and his trees

C. Growing roots                  D. Watering trees

You drive down the highway with your family or friends in the car, camping equipment and spare clothes in the back.Your windows are down and the wind is hitting you in the face. These are the makings of a classic US road trip.

Road trips are quite common in the country, especially during the Thanks-giving holiday, which is the busiest travel time of the year in the country for families and friends who want to get together.

And for students, going on a road trip is traditional after graduating from high school or college with their schoolmates. It usually involves traveling great distances across the US and camping out whenever possible. Destinations are different depending on where in the country someone is located. But they all show the same kind of adventure.Popular spots to travel to include Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canon.

However, the most famous of all road trip journey is travelling across the US on Route 66.Route 66 begins in Chicago and ends in Los Angeles. The route goes past many of the lesser-known states. However,it's the bizarre(稀奇古怪的)and wonderful small attractions that draw many road trippers to them. The attractions one sees on these trips are quite strange and very difficult to explain to non-American.They are filled with gas stations that still look like they did back in the 1950s and small restaurants known as "mom and pop restaurants" where you can eat a greasy cheeseburger with a delicious milkshake.Route 66 is also filled with quite unusual, but still fascinating wonders.

Deep down,US road trips show the spirit of freedom and openness. The idea is that if you have a car,you have freedom to escape,to discover,to find yourself,to lose yourself. It's a powerful call, one that is part of the US' identity and culture. It is a must-do for anyone who plans to spend time in the US to see the country and all of its wonders. An old saying—"It's not the destination,it's the journey"—best explains what the experience of a road trip truly offers.

About 12 years ago, I began making a series of dolls called “Wee Mountain Folk.” At first, I made them from cloth but then began using a kind of polymer clay(软陶)called cernit. The cloth dolls were beautiful, but it was impossible to get the level of detail(细节)I can get with clay.

First, I use wire(金属丝)to build the shape of the doll. Then I cover the head, hands, and feet around the wire using the cernit. Then I make the doll’s clothes myself, using lots of different materials. The completed dolls are fixed onto hardwood bases made by my father, Jim Logan.

Generally, the dolls I make show older people taking part in traditional activities. I’ve always had a great respect for the older generation.

Inspiration for the dolls often comes from people I know. Once I was caught looking too closely at the wrinkles(皱纹)on the face of one of my mom’s friends. But I explained that her laugh lines made her more attractive.

Now I work as a teacher’s assistant, and while I was raising my two daughters, Keri and Sheryl, I could work on the dolls only late in the day. The girls loved to come downstairs the next morning to see who’d arrived in the night.

It’s the detail that I enjoy working on the most. I once made a fisherman doll for a lady to give her father, including a tiny creel – a basket used by fishermen for carrying fish. When the man got the doll, he immediately opened the creel to see what was inside. Luckily, I’d made a small fish out of cernit and placed it in the basket.

Hopefully my story will inspire others to try their hand at doll making – I find it very relaxing and interesting.

A. thought doll making was a waste of time

B. thought the dolls’ styles were too old

C. showed great interest in the dolls

D. paid little attention to the dolls

27. The author tells the story of the fisherman doll to show that_____.

A. it takes much effort to make a doll

C. the old also love her dolls

D. her dolls have fine details

Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee(拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.

Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy(书法)to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.

But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.

In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.

12. Which of the following is closest in the meaning with the underlined sentence is paragraph 2?

 A. Ever Chinese can write Chinese characters easily, especially with computers

 B. Only with the help of computers can some Chinese people write Chinese characters

 C. Despite the help of computers, Chinese people have forgotten how to write

 D. Computers are the only means to rely on to write Chinese characters for many people

13. What can we learn about the Character Hero?

 A. It’s open to people of all ages and all walks.

 B. It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China.

 C. It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.

 D. It draws great public attention across the country.

14. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?

 A. Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.

 B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.

 C. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.

 D. Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.

15. According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is__________.

 A. necessary for adults to survive in China

 B. a requirement made by the Education Ministry

 C. helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive

 D. an ability to be developed only when you are students

I’d like to share a unforgettable experience with you. It happened in a warm Sunday afternoon in August. I go shopping with my cousin, Li Ming. When walk in the street, we found a young man, who was big but strong, stealing a woman’s wallet. We stopped her immediately. Though he stared at us angry, we didn’t feel frightened and tried to make him to realize his bad behavior. Because our bravery, he left without saying a word. The woman thought highly of us for which we had done. In my opinion, it’s our duty to fight against bad behaviors.

Many stories happened at the Children’s Medical Care Center,   41   deeply touched us. We saw a lot of children without hair because of their treatment. We played with them and taught them to draw pictures. They suffered great pains,   42   were very friendly. It was much easier to communicate with them than we   43   (expect).

One day, a girl suggested   44   (teach) us how to fold paper. She taught us   45   great patience, explaining each step slowly and clearly. Though we could easily do that, we still pretended (假装) to know nothing about it. We followed her and did everything she told us. Finally, when we finished our work   46  (success), she gave each of us   47   big hug. We could see the pride and happiness on her face. Her father was   48   thankful to us that he held our hands tightly, tears in his eyes. It was not until then   49   we knew the girl would receive an operation the next day.

It was really a valuable experience to us all. We began to think about how to deal with the difficulties in life, because   50   (compare) with what these kids are going through, our “troubles” seem not worth mentioning at all.

Long time ago, there was a farmer who lived with his daughter. A young man fell in love with the farmer’s beautiful daughter and wished to   21   her. One day, he went to the farmer to   22  his permission. The farmer looked at him and said, “ Guy, stand out in that  23   . I’m going to release (释放24  bulls(公牛), one at a time. If you can   25   the tail of any one of the three bulls, you can marry my daughter.”

26  , the young man got out and stood in the field,   27    the first bull. The barn(牛棚) door   28     and out came the biggest bull that he had ever seen. He   29     that one of the next bulls had to be a better   30     than this one, so he ran over to the side and let the bull   31    .

A few   32     later, the barn door opened again. Unbelievable! The young man had never seen any bull so   33     and fierce as this one in his life. It stood there, pawing(扒) the   34   and eyeing the young man. “What the next   35    was like? It had to be a better choice than this one,” he thought. He did nothing but wait silently.

It was quite some time before the door opened. A   36     came across the young man’s face. This was the weakest bull that he had ever seen. “ This one was my bull,” he   37     to himself. As the bull came running by, he positioned himself just right and   38     at just the exact moment. He threw his hands to catch ...... But to his   39    , the bull had no tail.

Life is full of opportunities.    40    catch the first one.

One Sunday, I was doing my homework while it suddenly occurred to me that the next day was my mother’s birthday. However, I forgot it complete. I was sad because I didn’t prepare any present to her. At that moment, the idea of online shopping came to my mind. I search some famous shopping website where there were all kinds of dresses. Before I compared the prices of many dresses, I chose one which I thought my mom would like it and paid for it as soon as possible. The next morning I received a dress even without get out of my house. You see, online shopping has made our life convenient and colorful than before.

Mary Allen was my best friend-like the sister I ever had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, and horseback riding.

When I was 13, my family moved away. Mary and I kept in touch through letters and we saw each other on special occasions(场合)- like my wedding and Marys. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back stamped "Address Unknown ".

Over the years, I thought of Mary often. I wanted to share stories of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Mary could fill.

One day I was reading the newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked a lot like Mary and whose last name was Wagman--Marys married name. "There must be thousands of Wagman. "I thought, but I wrote to her anyway.

She called as soon as she got my letter. "Mrs Tobin!" she said excitedly. "Mary Allen Wagman is my mother.  Minutes later I heard a voice recognized immediately, even after 40 years. We laughed and cried and caught up on each others lives.
