Where it enters Southeast Asia, it makes wide bends or meanders through low valleys to the plain. In last the river delta enters into the South China Sea.

The Fitting-in of Suzy Khan
The first time I saw Suzy Khan, I knew I had to help her. She was really small for her age of 12. The boys in my class often 21 about her and laughed their heads off. She would open a book, pretending to read, with tears dropping on the open page.
All I knew was that she was an orphan (孤儿) from Africa. She had just been adopted by a family in town who 22 that the best way for her to learn American ways of life was to be with American kids. I looked down at this 23 girl and promised myself that somehow I would help her.
But how could I help her 24 in with us? There had to be a 25 .
One day, when I went into the classroom, I saw that Suzy had 26 her geography book to a picture of a train, and in her notebook, she had made a(n) 27 copy. I was surprised and thought that she could do something in the coming 28 show. So, I took her to see the art teacher, Miss Parker, and showed her what Suzy had 29 . “Why, it's wonderful,” said Miss Parker, who then showed us a poster she had painted 30 the talent show. “I need more of these, but I just don't have enough 31 .Could you help me, Suzy?”
On the day of the talent show, Suzy's 32 were everywhere—all over the hall and all over the school, each one different.
“And finally,” said Mr. Brown, the schoolmaster, at the end of the show, “we have a (n) 33 award. I'm sure you've all noticed the wonderful posters.” Everyone nodded.” One of our own students 34 them.”
I could hear everyone whispering. “Who in our school could draw 35 well?”
Mr. Brown waited a while before saying, “ 36 this student worked so hard on the posters, she deserves a 37 ,too. Our mystery(神秘) artist is our new student—Suzy Khan!”
Mr. Brown thanked her for all the wonderful posters and gave her a professional artist's set. “ Thank you!” she cried.
I 38 , at that time when I was looking at her excited face, she'd probably never 39 anything in her whole life.
Everyone started to 40 their hands. Suzy Khan gave them a shy smile and the applause was deafening. I knew then Suzy was going to be all right.

When you visit America, you will see the word “Motel ”on signs and notice boards. It is made up of “motor” and “hotel” and it is really a hotel for people who arrive by car (however, you don’t need a car to stay at one). You have to pay when you arrive for your room, which usually has a bath. Meals are not provided, but there will certainly be a cafeteria ( 自助餐馆 ). Americans eat a lot of salads and sandwiches. Along the main roads there are a lot of motels. Each tries to offer more than next. Some provide television in every bedroom; others have swimming pools; and so on. Motels are especially useful when you are in the country, far from a town or city. You will also find them in the big National Parks.
In these great National Parks, you may meet guests you don’t expect to see. An American friend told me a little story. In the middle of a moonless night she heard strange noises outside her motel window in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Thinking it might be a thief, she jumped out of bed, opened the door and crept towards a dark shadow. As she got close, she saw the thief. She was dreadfully frightened: it wasn’t a human thief — it was a big black bear. The bear was turning over some empty tins with its paw, looking for tasty bits of food. My friend decided to leave that particular thief alone!
There are also, of course, places called “rooming houses”, where they receive lodgers ( 房客 ). You will see such signs as Tourists or Rooms Rent, and you could try one of these. A word of warning — looking for a room in New York during the tourist season is like looking for gold on the moon!

25. Which of the following is NOT provided by motels?

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could to help her three-year-old son, Michael, prepare for a new sibling(兄弟姊妹). They find out that the new baby is going to be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sings to his sister in Mommy’s stomach.
The pregnancy (怀孕) progresses normally for Karen. But problems appear during delivery (分娩). Finally, Michael’s little sister is born. But she is in serious condition. An ambulance rushes the infant to the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital.
The little girl gets worse. The doctor tells the parents, “There is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst.” Karen and her husband have fixed up a special room in their home for the new baby — now they plan a funeral (葬礼).
Michael, keeps begging his parents to let him see his sister, “I want to sing to her,” he says. But kids are never allowed in Intensive Care Unit(重症监护室). However, Karen makes up her mind. She will take Michael whether they like it or not. “If he doesn’t see his sister now, he may never see her alive.” She dresses him in an oversized coat and leads him into ICU. The head nurse recognizes him as a child and bellows, “Get that kid out of here now!” The mother, the usually mild-mannered lady glares steel-eyed into the head nurse’s face, her lips a firm line. “He is not leaving until he sings to his sister!” Karen pulls Michael to his sister’s bedside. He gazes at the tiny infant losing the battle to live. And he begins to sing.
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine; you make me happy when skies are gray…”
Immediately the baby girl responds. The pulse rate(脉搏) becomes calm and steady.
“You never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away…”
The weak breathing becomes as smooth as a kitten’s purr(咕噜声).
Keep on singing, Michael. Tears conquer the face of the bossy head nurse as well as Karen.
Funeral plans are removed. The next day — the very next day — the little girl is well enough to go home!
