Many stories happened at the Children’s Medical Care Center, 71 deeply touched us. We saw a lot of children without hair because of their treatment. We played with them and taught them to draw pictures. They suffered great pains, 72 were very friendly. It was much easier to communicate with them than we 73 (expect).
One day, a girl suggested 74 (teach) us how to fold paper. She taught us 75 great patience, explaining each step slowly and clearly. Though we could easily do that, we still pretended (假装) to know nothing about it. We followed her and did everything she told us. Finally, when we finished our work 76 (success), she gave each of us 77 big hug. We could see the pride and happiness on her face. Her father was 78 thankful to us that he held our hands tightly, tears in his eyes. It was not until then 79 we knew the girl would receive an operation the next day.
It was really a valuable experience to us all. We began to think about how to deal with the difficulties in life, because 80 (compare) with what these kids are going through, our “troubles” seem not worth mentioning at all.
It doesn’t matter when and how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw him sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure.
Herpin died at the age of 94.

40. Al Herpin’s condition could be regarded as ______

A lift is wonderful. It is really only a small room. Rooms usually stay in one place. Lifts travel up and down all day long.
Sometimes a worker stands in the lift. He or she operates it up and down. In modern lifts there is no worker. The people walk in. They know what floor they want. They push a button and the lift goes to that floor. It is all very fast and easy.
Lifts are very important to us. Why? Think about a tall building. Maybe it has twenty floors. Maybe it has fifty or more. Who can walk up all the stairs? Maybe people can climb them one time. Can someone climb thirty floors to an office every day? Can small children walk up to their room on the twenty-fourth floor? Can their mother and father carry food up all those stairs? Of course not.
We can have high buildings because we have lifts. We could not have all the beautiful tall buildings in the world without lifts. They are really wonderful.

We often hear the saying, "You’ve a greater chance of being struck by lightning than..." It is used to describe something that hasn’t got much chance of happening. However, this common saying undermines (逐渐削弱) the very real danger of lightning.
Last Friday, at least five people were killed by lightning in Nepal. Lightning strikes are the second most common cause of deaths among natural disasters in the US. The first is floods. Around 400 people nationwide are struck by lightning each year, and of those, about 73 people die. More people are killed by lightning than by tornados(龙卷风) and hurricanes. Because lightning kills only one or two people at a time, its danger does not receive as much attention as other disasters. To raise awareness(意识)of the damage of lightning, the US has made June 22—28 National Lightning Safety Week, which aims to warn the public of the danger of lightning and provide safety tips about what to do during thunderstorms.
"If you can hear thunder (雷), you are in danger of being struck by lightning," said Rocky Lopes, a disaster educator at the American Red Cross."Thunder means that lightning is close enough to hit you at any minute, so you should move indoors immediately and stay there until the storm has ended. The single most important thing to remember is to find a hiding place,"Rockey said.
Summer is the time for most lightning storms, so when lightning strikes across the sky, remember these safety tips: stop working, fishing, swimming or playing in an open area. If you count less than ten seconds between the thunder and the lightning flash, take cover inside the nearest building. If that is not possible, follow these instructions:

Never shall I forget the first English lesson giving by Miss Liu. One Monday morning, when she entered the classroom, we found that shewas a young or beautiful lady. Then she introduced herself and said they shouldn’t call her Teacher Liu but Miss Liu. Later, she asked us to go to the blackboard and said something about ourselves with English. When it was my turn, I felt so shyly that I didn’t dare to say anything before the class. She went up to me and said kindly, “Don’t afraid and I believe you can do them well.” At the last, I went to the blackboard. She praised me for which I had done.
