高一英语上学期上册试题

We appreciate your interest in giving animals a hand! While helping others, volunteering gives you a way to learn, have fun and give back to your community (社区). There are many ways to care for the animals at PAWS.
     Youth Work Party
If you are ten years or older, you can join the Youth Work Party Team with a parent to work on
different projects around PAWS in Lynnwood, WA. For example, you can build boxes for frightened, injured wildlife to hide in. Ask your parent to sign up to join a work party. If you are eighteen years or older, you can join the Youth Work Party Team independently.
     PAWSwalk
PAWSwalk is our biggest fundraising (
筹款) event of the year, held at the end of the summer to raise money to care for the animals. You can collect money with the help of your family, friends and school, and then walk in the event.
     Cookie Sale
Selling homemade dog cookies is a wonderful way to help the animals. PAWS can provide brochures(
小册子)to give out when you sell the cookies prepared by you and your parents, so people can learn about PAWS at the same time. You can find homemade dog cookie cooking instructions on the Internet or by checking out cookbooks for dogs at the library.
     Movie Night
Invite friends, family, neighbors and classmates to watch your favorite animal movie, like Babe or Charlotte's Web. Ask them to bring an "entrance fee" of donations or supplies for the animals.
Thanks again for your interest in PAWS and helping animals. Share your ideas with your parents and invite a few friends to join you in helping make a difference for animals. If you have any questions, call 425-787-2500-261.

All languages change over time, but some change at a faster rate than others.   36   The most important factors are the number of people who speak a language, where they live and whether they move around, the importance of the language for world trade and communication, and changes in technology.

37   However, today English is the most widely used language in the world. English is spoken by about 350 million people as a first language in countries such as Great Britain, the United States. In addition, about a billion more people speak English as a second language.

English started to take over French as an international language during the period of British colonialism (殖民主义) when the English ruled many countries in Africa and Asia.   38   The colonial period came to an end at the same time that several other changes occurred. For example, the U.S. started to play a greater part in global affairs and the international economy. New means of communication technology such as television and the Internet spread English worldwide.   39   In addition, they could use the Internet for information, business, or e-mail communication, all in English. Just as the use of English spread, other languages changed English by contact or by new inventions and technology.

In contrast, Icelandic is a language that has changed very slowly. Icelandic speakers today can understand poetry written in a slightly different dialect over 1,000 years ago! Why has Icelandic changed so slowly? The main reason is the isolated (孤立的) location of the island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.   40   Compared to England, Iceland had no history of colonialism. Iceland’s small population has not played a major role in international trade or communication. Today, most Icelanders speak English in addition to their native language. With outside influences, Icelandic is changing more rapidly now.

A. People everywhere could watch the news or sports events in English.

B. These changes have a great influence on the development of society.

C. Isolation meant that for hundreds of years, Icelanders had little contact with speakers of other languages.

D. What are some of the factors that influence how quickly a language changes?

E. The language communication brings about the communication of technology.

F. In the past, other languages such as Latin or French were more important than English.

G. English was the primary means of communication in these colonies.

— Come on, please give me some ideas about the project.

   — Sorry. With so much work ______ my mind, I almost break down.

   A. filled                         B. filling                  C. to fill                       D. fills

Home to me means a sense of familiarity and nostalgia(怀旧). It's fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You'll realize what's changed is you. Home is where we can remember pain, live, and some other experiences; We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here.

If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glass-top wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It's empty, but it's where my earliest memories are.

There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween-when I didn't want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table, I can see my favorite room in the house, my parents' room. It is simple: a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime - waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.

I'm lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property (住宅) on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew and I learned.

Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it's where I'll find my family, my dogs, and my belongings. I purposely leave the window open at night because I know I'll be blamed by Mom. But I don't mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I'm home.

32. Why does the author call her parents' bed her "safe zone"(Paragraph 3)?

AIt is her favorite place to play.

BHer needs can be satisfied there.

CHer grandparents' photos are lined on each side.

DHer parents always play together with her there.

33. What can be learned from the passage?

AThe old furniture is still in the author's fist bedroom.

BThe author's favorite room in her first home is the dining room.

CThe author can still visit her first physical home in Los Angeles.

DMany people of the author's age can still find their first physical homes.

34. Sometimes when she feels lost, the author will _______.

Atry to bring back a sense of home        Bopen the window at night

Clie down in bed to have a dream      Dgo to Los Angeles to visit her mom

35. What is the author's purpose of writing this passage?

ATo declare how much she loves her first house.

To express how much she is attached to her home.

BTo express how much she is attached to her home.

CTo describe the state of her family.

DTo look back on her childhood.

According to a recent study out of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton school, men with shaved heads are considered to be more manly, powerful and successful than those with longer hair or thinning(稀疏的)hair. Besides , in some cases, they are considered to have greater leadership potential (潜力). That may explain why the power-buzz look has become popular among business leaders in recent years.

Albert Mannes ,Wharton management lecturer, said he was encouraged to do the research after noticing that he was treated with more respect when he shaved off his own thinning hair.

Mannes did three experiments to test people’s impressions of men with shaved 344 subjects photos of the same men in two versions: one showing the men with hair and the other showing them with their hair digitally removed, so their heads appear shaved. In all three tests, the subjects reported finding the men with shaved heads as more dominant (占优势的) than their hairy counterparts (对应的人).

The study found that men with thinning hair were viewed as the least attractive and powerful. For those men, the solution could be as cheap and simple as a shave.

New York image consultant Julie Rath advised her clients to get closely cropped when they start thinning up top. “There’s something really strong, powerful and confident about laying it all bare (光秃的)she said, describing the thinning look as kind of raunchy(不修边幅的).

Not everyone needs a bare head. Rick Devine, 55, the CEO of Devine Capital Parners, advised executive candidates attracted by their clippers to keep their hair closely cropped, rather than completely shaved. “It is way too much image risk,” he said . “The best thing you can do in a business meeting is to make your look not an issue.”

Dr. Michael Prager, a leading Botox expert, said that a growing number of women are developing something called “computer face”. He also mentioned that professionals who worked long hours in front of a screen were ending up with saggy jowls(颚骨), “turkey neck” and deep-set wrinkles on their forehead and around their eyes.

The Botox expert said that, of all his clients, office workers were most likely to show premature(过早的)signs of ageing. “If you are one of the unfortunate people who frown(皱眉)while you are concentrating on the screen then, over time, you will inevitably end up with frown lines,” Dr. Prager said. “What is perhaps more surprising is the number of women with saggy jowls because they are sitting in one position for so long. If you spend most of the time looking down then the neck muscles shorten and go saggy, eventually giving you a second neck. “

Dr. Prager, who has a practice near Harley Street in London, said he encourages his clients to put a mirror next to their computer so they can see if they are frowning at the screen. “When people are stressed or thinking hard about something, then they will often put on a ‘grumpy(脾气暴躁的)face’ without even knowing what they are doing. When my clients put a mirror next to their desk, they are often shocked by the angry, frowning face which stares back at them.”

He said, “The women I am seeing at the moment have only been using computers at work for the last decade or so. But women in their 20s have grown up with them and use them for every single task. I think the problem is going to become much, much worse. In another ten years, they could be looking quite awful.”

Dr. Prager said there were several simple steps which could avoid “computer face” such as regular screen breaks and stretching the neck muscles. And, of course, there was always Botox. He said that, after a couple of sessions of Botox, the habit of “grumpy face” could be broken.

4. In what way do women develop a “computer face”?

A. Frowning every now and then.

B. Concentrating on computers frequently.

D. Sitting in the same place for a long time.

5. According to the passage, which of the following are signs of ageing?

A. Saggy jowls and short necks.

B. Turkey neck and frown lines.

C. Deep-set wrinkles and angry faces.

D. Second neck and stressed muscles.

6. From the last 2 paragraphs, we can learn that ______.

A. “computer face” is avoidable

At Sudbury Valley Schoolyou will permit children to talkreadpaintcookwork on computersstudy Frenchplay the pianoclimb trees or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!

The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules.Every weekthere is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote eacheven the fouryearolds. They decide the school ruleshow to spend the school budgetand even which staff they want and do not want any more.

When the school first opened in 1968people said it would never work. But todaythe school has 200 studentsand 80%of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.

Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom - Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical.

We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn’t take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.

Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff(员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, "Promise?" Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.

Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria’s new friend with "her" ice-cream.

  Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won’t last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew’ what time we would get off the ride;

she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, "Thank you," but I’m sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.

We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!

  Your fan,

  Carmen Rivera
