English words don’t stay the same. People need new words for new ideas and new inventions. Some new words come into use, and some old words are used in a new way.
English can change by borrowing words from other languages. The word “tomato” was borrowed from Mexico, and “tea” came from China, and so on. Now a great many new space and science words are being borrowed from other countries, too. New words can be created in other ways. For example, some can
be created by adding two words together. “Weekend” and “cookbook” are made up of two parts. Sometimes new words are shorter forms of old words. The word “photo” was made from “photograph” by cutting off the end of the longer word. “Plane” was made by cutting off the front part of “airplane”. The names of people and products can become new words. Our “sandwich” was named after a man named Sandwich and “sello(透明胶带)” was a name given by the company that first made the product.

A boy called Mario loved to have many friends. He showed off (炫耀)a lot, always talking about how many friends he had at school. One day his grandpa said to him, “Mario, I bet you don’t have as many friends as you think. I am sure many of them are just acquaintances (泛泛之交).”
Mario disagreed with his grandpa. However, he wasn’t sure how he could test whether or not his schoolmates were real friends. Now his grandpa had something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. “Take it. It’s a very special chair. Because it’s unseen, it’s rather difficult to sit on. But if you take it to school and manage to sit on it, you’ll believe its magic (魔力) and be able to tell who your real friends are.”
Mario took the strange chair and set off for school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle(圈)and put himself in the middle with his chair. Then Mario tried to sit on the chair but always missed and fell. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, but kept falling to the ground. Suddenly, he tried again and didn’t fall. It was then that he finally experienced the magic. Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas, and Diana holding him up so he wouldn’t fall. Dear Jeremy and Alice,
Although we've been delighted to have you as neighbors, we're hoping to settle
something that troubles to us. In a word, your dog—Cleo.
We've called several time about Cleo's early morning barking. It is difficult to
understanding why she barks every minute she's outside. The early morning barking
have been disturbing us as we are often up all night with the baby. Beside, Cleo tends to
bark a average of six hours a day. This morning she starts barking even before 5
o'clock. That is too much for us, considering how closely the houses are.
We appreciate our apologies and goodwill, but we hope that you can figure a
good way of settling the matter.
Sincerely,
Jack and Rose
Edwin Hubble made his most important discoveries in the 1920s. Today, other astronomers continue the work he began. Many of them are using the Hubble Space Telescope that is named after him.
Edwin Powell Hubble was born in 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri. He spent his early years in the state of Kentucky. Then he moved with his family to Chicago, in Louisville. He attended the University of Chicago. He studied mathematics and astronomy. Hubble was a good student. He was a good athlete, too. He was a member of the University of Chicago championship basketball team in 1909. He also was an excellent boxer. Several people urged him to train for the world heavyweight boxing championship after college. Instead, he decided to continue his studies. He went to Queen’s College at Oxford, England.
At Oxford, Hubble studied law. He was interested in British Common Law, because his family had come to America from England many years before. He spent three years at Oxford. In 1913, Hubble returned to the United States. He opened a law office in Louisville, Kentucky. After a short time, however, he decided he did not want to be a lawyer. He returned to the University of Chicago. There, once again, he studied astronomy. Edwin Hubble was the first person to use the Hale Telescope. He died in 1953 while preparing to spend four nights looking through the telescope at the sky.
Hubble’s work led to new researches on the birth of the universe. One astronomer said scientists have been filling in the details ever since. And, he said, there is a long way to go.

American high school students are terrible writers, and one education reform group thinks it has an answer: robots. Or, more accurately, robot-readers-computers programmed to scan student essays and spit out a grade.
Mark Shermis, professor of the College of Education at the University of Akron, is helping to hold a contest, set up by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation ( WFHF), which promises $ 100,000 in prize money to programmers who write the best automated grading software. "If you're a high school teacher and you give a writing task, you're walking home with 150 essays, " Shermis said, "You're going to need some help. "
Automated essay grading was first proposed in the 1960s, but computers back then were not up to the task. In the late 1990s, as technology improved, several textbook and testing companies jumped into the field. Today, computers are used to grade essays on South Dakota's student writing assessments and a handful of other exams, including the TOEFL test of English fluency, taken by foreign students.
The Hewlett contest aims to show that computers can grade as well as English teachers---- only much more quickly and without all that depressing red ink. Automated essay scoring is "objective," Shermis said, " And it can be done immediately. If students finish an essay at l0 pm, they get a result at 10 :00 pm . "
Take, for instance, the Intelligent Essay Assessor, a web-based tool marketed by Pearson Education, Inc. Within seconds it can analyze an essay for spelling, grammar, organization, and help students to make revisions. The program scans for key words and analyzes semantic (语义的) patterns , and Pearson claims that it can understand the meaning of text much the same as a human reader.

“I’m at peace with it. I have no regrets.” Li Na posted this bittersweet statement about her retirement from professional tennis last Friday. During Sunday’s farewell news conference, she wiped tears from her face, revealing just how hard it was for her to come to this decision.
The two-time Grand Slam champion, 32, has not played in a professional tournament since her third-round loss to the Czech Republic’s Barbora at Wimbledon 2014. In July, Li underwent a fourth surgery on her knee and said she hoped to be back for the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, to be held in her hometown, but was unable to recover from her injuries.
At the age of 17, Li went professional and began training in the state sports system. After the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, she made the life-changing decision to leave the national team.
The aggressive player has since become one of the region’s biggest stars and the poster girl for the Women’s Tennis Association. After her win at the 2011 French Open, Li became the first player from Asia to win a Grand Slam singles title. She went on to claim another Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this past January. At the height of her career, she was ranked the world’s No.2 player behind Serena Williams from the US.
Despite her tough performance on the court, Li won millions of admirers with her warm and charming personality outside the arena. Her frequent joking in courtside interviews about life with Jiang Shan, 34, her former coach and husband of eight years, helped her become a global icon.
Li’s biggest accomplishment, however, is her contribution to the rise of tennis in China. Just a few years ago, the sport was still in its infancy. The number of female tennis events in China has shot up from 2 to 10 over the course of the past decade.
Li is more than a sports superstar. She’s an inspiration to millions. In that sense, she’s achieved more in her professional life than most can ever dream.

I grew up in an area where the natural disaster I was really concerned about was earthquakes. Besides the fire drills(演习) we had each year at school, we also had earthquakes drills. Luckily, there are a few things we can do to prepare for an earthquake.
At home, I think we can fasten heavy objects to our walls. We can buy hooks at our local hardware store. When we fasten them to the walks, we should make sure we follow the instructions.
When we put objects on shelves, we should make sure they are not heavy or that they cannot hurt somebody when they fall off. This is especially important in bedrooms, as when we are awakened due to an earthquake, our reaction time may be slow. We will want to make sure that we don’t have objects that will fall directly on to the bed.
For homes with children, I think parents should teach them what to do during an earthquake. Parents should show them how to get under a table during a quake. Another safe place is an inside doorframe. Parents should teach their children not to go near glass or other unsafe area during the quake. I think they should also teach children what to do if they are ever trapped after an earthquake.
If we are in a structure, which has suffered considerable damage, I think we should try to move outside after the quake. As we go outside, we should make sure that we are aware of fallen power lines and other dangers. Broken gas mains are another serious danger after a quake.
This is an emergency where it is important to have a family’s emergency action plan in place. Most likely a family will not be together during an earthquake. If each one can remember what they are supposed to do in this situation, then they will have an easier time finding and picking up each other.

Christmas Eve was tomorrow. I hoped one of the packages that held a camera had already been placed under the Christmas tree. It was the only thing I wanted. I had been dropping hints to my parents. I love taking photos. My bedroom walls are covered with photos I had taken with my mom’s old camera. I’m always trying to capture (捕捉) those perfect moments in which you can hear the laughter or touch the beautiful scene, but my camera has always seemed to fall short.
I knew Mom had put a few presents under the tree this morning, so I went on a hunt in my mom’s room. I opened the door and found my Christmas present was lying unwrapped on the floor — a big pink cat. I felt so disappointed.
Mom seemed to notice that, and she tried to cheer me up. “Stacy, I got your present today. I am so excited to surprise you!” “I can’t wait,” I said. The next day I couldn’t wait any longer. I needed to tell her.
“Mom, may I talk to you for a second?”
“Sure, dear. What do you need to talk about?” she asked.
And so it came — how upset I was that I was getting a cat.
“Stacy, that cat is for your sister Julia!” she said with a smile.
“Then what am I getting?” I asked.
She just smiled. “You’ll have to wait and see.”
Next morning, I happily got into the living room and sat next to the tree. I pulled out the box with my name on it and opened the wrapping paper to find ...
My camera! “Thank you!” I said to both Dad and Mom.
Dad picked up the camera and took a picture of Julia, Mom and me. It has become one of my favorite pictures. Just on that Christmas morning, I took lots of photos with my camera — my little sister making a face, my parents giving me a soft smile — and all of these photos have come to mean one thing to me: love.
