There was once a man who went out to look for a job. As he was passing his neighbor's house, an important piece of paper fell out of the man's pocket.

His neighbor happened to be looking out of the window. He saw the piece of paper fall, and he thought: "What a disgrace! That guy let that fall out of his pocket on purpose. He's trying to mess up the front of my house!" But instead of going out and communicating with him, the neighbor planned his revenge(报复). That night, he took his waste-paper basket and went to the man's house. The first man also happened to be looking out of the window, and saw what happened. Later, when he was picking up the paper which had been dumped near his door, he found the important piece of paper that he had lost. It was torn into dozens of pieces. He thought that his neighbor had not only picked his pocket, but had the cheek to (厚着脸皮) mess up his doorway with rubbish.

He didn't want to say anything. Instead, he started planning his revenge. That night he phoned a farmer to make an order of ten pigs and a hundred ducks. He asked that they be delivered to his neighbor's house.

Of course, the next day, his neighbor had quite a bit of trouble trying to get rid of so many animals and their noises. Sure that this had been an evil trick pulled by his neighbor, the second man again started planning his revenge immediately he got rid of the pigs and ducks.

And so it went on.

They continued trying to get back at each other, and each time their acts of revenge got bigger and more stupid. The dropping of that single piece of paper ended up causing a fire siren(警报), the driving of a truck into a garden fence, the throwing of stones at windows, and finally the dropping of a bomb which destroyed both men's houses.

I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day--a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I discovered three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis(海啸) many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew how to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my body board(俯伏冲浪板) on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastguard. My neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his body board, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.

Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency--I'd never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I supposed in a way I wanted to impress everyone: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.

Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

"We can't keep this rabbit," I told my husband, as he stood there holding it. He had found the rabbit outside a medical center an hour earlier. It was clear that someone had given it up. Our dog, Autumn, stretched (伸长) her neck to look at the rabbit in my husband's hands.

We agreed the rabbit could spend the night in our back yard, and I would try to find a new home for it the next day. Autumn followed me as I put a bowl of water and lettuce (莴苣) near some bushes, where she lived and played.

"Don't worry," I told Autumn. "This yard is owned by you, and you don't have to share it with a rabbit." We went back into the house and locked the rabbit outside. My husband was worried about the rabbit's safety all night.

The next morning, Autumn and I checked on the rabbit. Suddenly, the rabbit rushed from under the bushes and directly ran towards Autumn. He ran in big circles around my big but gentle dog, as if to say, "I'm the boss here. You might be bigger, but you're not going to hurt me."

Autumn looked as if she had no idea what had just happened. Since she was a hunting dog (猎狗) by nature, I expected her to run after the rabbit, but no, it was the rabbit that ran after her.

In fact, just one strong shake of the head or neck from Autumn could scare off the rabbit and make him not dare to hang around her. However, instead of hurting the rabbit, Autumn made the rabbit's effort to show his power a game. She seemed to enjoy being run after.

"Next Friday we'll have the annual Egg Drop Challenge. The challenge is simple—you have to build a protective container to keep an egg from breaking when dropped over the stadium wall." said Mr. Beal.

Cassie and I grinned at each other. Always working on projects together, we're perfect combination. She's brainy while I am creative.

While waiting for Cassie to come over and work on the container, I made my favorite sandwich with the fluffy marshmallow (棉花糖) cream. That gave me an idea: We can put some marshmallow cream under the egg as a cushion.

I later told Cassie about it. But Cassie wasn't interested. "I got a better idea. We put the egg in a basket with a parachute attached." She said.

"It will never work." I said.

"And Marshmallow cream will?" Cassie rolled her eyes. "The parachute is better than that stupid idea."

I couldn't believe it. She never called my idea "stupid" before. "Then I will build mine and you build yours, and we'll just see whose is better."

"Fine!" Cassie stormed out. And just like that, our friendship was smashed, like an egg dropped from the top of a stadium without marshmallow cream to protect it.

When Friday arrived, I saw Cassie's Egg Force One. She had a handkerchief to create a small parachute. It was tied to a basket and, in the center of it, her egg.

My Egg-cellent Egg Cream didn't look quite scientific. I used a layer of marshmallow cream and a layer of jelly (果冻) to support the egg.

The competition started. Everyone in my class carried their egg containers up three stadium steps and dropped them over the side wall. If your egg broke, you were out. If the egg survived, you had to walk up three more steps and drop it again. This went on until the last egg broke.

By the fourth launch, only Cassie and I were left.

……

"My egg flew out," She explained, pointing to a broken shell in the grass.

It was one of ordinary days in October, grey and drizzling all the time. I dragged myself out of the bed and all of the routines began early. I dropped my two older children at school with relief and unwillingly headed to the supermarket to buy groceries with my youngest. Never had I felt any tinge of gratitude for my comfortable home or lovely family.

I was getting mad and frustrated with this early day, and my son, just four years old at that time, was being difficult. I raced around to pick the items with no regard to the cost, while trying in vain to control my naughty child whose behavior had now added to my complete displeasure. Yes, I was that mother, threatening, roaring at a small child, the kind of behavior you see in others before you have children and think, "I will never be one of those people. "

Eventually we made it to the checkout and stood in the queue waiting our turn. After a short time, I noticed that someone had joined the line behind us. I turned and saw an old man. He wore a dirty overcoat, tied around the middle with rope. His shoes were worn-out, and his trousers tapped around sockless ankles even on this cold, wet day. In his hands he carried a small box of long-life milk.

As I had too many groceries, I asked him if he'd like to go ahead of me. It was more like an automatic reaction than an act of kindness on my part. Perhaps I just did it out of a sense of guilt, or I just wanted him gone. After all, it was his presence that made me uncomfortable, in the same way I feel uncomfortable and avoid my eyes when passing a homeless person.

He didn't respond to me as if I had said nothing to him. Then I looked at him and repeated my words. This time, I was sure that he had heard what I said.

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book randomly off the shelf and took great interest in the notes in the margin (页边空白). The further he read, the more intrigued (着迷) he was by the notes. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful and profound mind. John couldn't help picturing in his mind what kind of people the owner would be.

In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner's name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With extreme delight, he couldn't contain his curiosity and spared a lot of time and effort to locate her address. Eventually and fortunately, all the efforts paid off, He wrote her a letter without any hesitation introducing himself and inviting her to respond.

During the following years the two grew to know each other through the mail, exchanging ideas covering all aspects ranging from classic works to current events, which brightened each other's life handsomely. John once requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting--7: 00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York. "You'll recognize me, "she wrote, "by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel (翻领)."So at 7: 00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.

A girl in a green suit was coming toward him, and she has black hair pulled tightly into a knot at the back of her head, her figure long and slim and her eyes amazingly charming blue, which quickened his heartbeat. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, with a strong voice yelling at the bottom of his heart but didn't spot the red rose on her lapel. It was just at this moment that he saw Hollis Maynell—a woman well past 40, with a bright-colored rose on her coat. The girl was walking quickly away.

"Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He's growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how sound he sleeps when I go m to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone. "

"Well, you can't, Adam. "His mother's voice was quick and light. "Besides, he isn't a child any more. It's time he took his turn. "

"Yes, "his father said slowly, "But I sure do hate to wake him."

A few days before Christmas that year when he was fifteen, Rob heard these words, and something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of that before, for neither his father nor his mother talked about loving their children—they had no time for such things. There was always so much to do on the farm.

They were poor, and most of the excitement for Christmas was in the turkey and the pies his mother made. His sisters sewed presents and his mother and father always bought him something he needed, not only a warm jacket, maybe, but something more, such as a book. And he saved and bought them each something, too.

He had gone to the ten-cent store and bought a tie as usual. It had seemed nice enough until he lay thinking the night before Christmas. He wished that he had a better present for his father.

A thought struck him like a silver lightning. Why should he not give his father a special gift in the barn(牛棚)?He could get up early, earlier than four o'clock and he could move quietly and slowly into the barn and get all the milking done. He'd do it alone, milk and clean up, and then when his father went in to start the milking, he'd see it all done. He laughed to himself as he gazed at the stars, it was what he would do, and he mustn't sleep too sound.

Anyone going to an amusement park might have seen the likes of me. I held purses, cellphones and sunglasses while others threw themselves on roller coasters. I admit their bravery, but refuse to challenge my own limitations.

One day when we were at the Wonderland Amusement Park in Toronto. My friends tried to get me to ride a roller coaster. But the click, click, click of the cars climbing up the tracks made me fear. The stop at the top, before falling with peoples screams, seemed terrible.

My friends were still trying to persuade me, and I was still saying no, when I suddenly saw a familiar face, one I had never seen outside a television set. It was Jennifer Capriati, a popular tennis star at the top of her game, already winning titles at the age of fourteen. She was my heroine. I pulled out a pen and the only paper that I could find and walked to her.

She was weaving her way through a rope that led to a ride called the Jet Scream. I was running quickly because I didn't want to pass up the chance to meet her face to face, but I was also a bit nervous. So I waited at the exit to calm down and get closer to her as she came off the ride.

Several minutes later, she got out from the exit, laughing and talking with her brother. I focused on her walking toward me. I looked down at the ground. She walked past. It was more difficult to talk to a star than I thought, but I had to take the chance. I called her name, not very confidently, but more like a question, "Jennifer?" She turned around. Her eyes met mine. Our eyes actually met "Would you mind signing for me?" I asked, handing the pen and paper toward her. Her hand wrote over the paper and said, "You are the first person who has recognized me in the park so let's take a roller coaster together."

Holland is a country where much of the land lies below sea level. Only great walls called dikes(堤) keep the North Sea from rushing in and flooding the land. Once there lived in Holland a boy named Peter. One lovely autumn afternoon, when Peter was eight, he wanted to take some hot cakes to his blind friend. Off he went with a light heart He stayed with his friend a little while, telling him about his walk along the dike, about the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother's words that he should return before dark, so he set out for home.

As he walked along, he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty flowers that grew beside the road. Suddenly he noticed that the sun was setting. "Mother will be worried about me," he thought, and he began to run toward home Just then he heard a noise He stopped and looked down There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing. Any child in Holland is frightened at the thought of a leak(漏) in the dike.

Peter understood the danger at once. If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger one, and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do. Throwing away his flowers, he climbed down the side of the dike and stuck his finger in the tiny hole. The flowing of the water was stopped! This was all very well at first, but soon it grew dark and cold. The little fellow shouted and screamed for help. But no one heard him. It grew  still  colder, and his arm ached, and began to grow numb(麻木). He shouted again. "Will no one come? Mother! Mother!"

But his mother had looked anxiously along the dike road many times since sunset, and now she had closed the door, thinking that Peter was spending the whole night with his blind  friend, and that  she would punish him in the morning for staying away from home without permission.

When I was young, I lived in a small village in Melaka. The spirit of neighborliness was very strong then. The village had a variety of trades to serve the needs of the villagers. There was a barber, tailor, coffee shop owner, grocer, and so on. All of us were quite poor but we got by. However, one family which could be considered as living a marginal existence was the Lim family living in the bicycle shop opposite our dwelling.

Mr. Lim, the bicycle mechanic, had a large brood of children-welve to be exact. My mother was a kind-hearted soul. Often, she would remark that his children were dressed in ragged clothes and looked malnourished (营养不良的). My family was relatively better off in the village. My parents would bring over whatever food we could spare to the Lim family.

I remember one particular year when times were very hard. Even my family had to make do with two meals a day. We stopped the practice of giving food to Mr. Lim. One day, I noticed my mother looking troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. She decided to sacrifice a portion of our meals to the family despite the protests(抗议)from my brothers that were too hungry. Fortunately, the lean spell (困难时期) did not last long, and the children in our family resumed our three meals a day again.

As time went on, the number of customers at Lim's shop had increased rapidly. Business at his shop took off like a rocket as Japanese bikes were very useful and popular for transport. They were much better off than before.

It was at this time that my father's health was worsening. We were confused by the mysterious illness he was suffering from. Because of lack of attention to his provision shop (食品店),the business became worse. My father then sold our family car to pay off the mounting bills. My brothers and I had to stop schooling because we could not afford the fees.

Michelle was eight years old when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Jack, now only an infant(婴儿). He was very sick and they were completely out of money. Only a very costly operation could save Jack the baby now but there was no one to whom they could turn for the money needed. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mom, "Only a miracle can save him now."

At the words, Michelle went to her bedroom and took out all the coins from her little moneybox. After counting the coins three times, she slipped out the back door and made her way to the drug store six blocks away . . .

She waited for a long time before the pharmacist(药剂师) turned around and asked her. "And what do you want?"

"Well, it's' about my brother," Michelle answered. "He's really, really sick…and I want to buy a miracle."

"I beg your pardon?" said the pharmacist. "His name is Jack and he has something very bad growing inside his body and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?"

"We don't sell miracles here, little girl .I'm sorry but I can't help you," the pharmacist said. "Listen, I have money to pay for it." I was sure everyone in my junior-high drama class saw the paper in my hands shaking when I stood up to audition (试演) for a lead role in the annual Christmas play. I was there, not by choice, but because teacher Alice wanted each of us to try out for a part.

As a "good" student, I did what I was asked, even if it was scary. 1 was small for my age, wore secondhand clothes and cried easily. At school, I was often the object of jokes and laughter and had few friends. I wanted desperately to shrink back into my seat and be invisible. But there I was, on stage. Reading was, at least, something I loved. So, I read.

I finished reading and rushed back to my seat. The spell was broken. I wanted to curl up (蜷缩) and disappear. When the teacher read the cast list and called my name, I wasn't paying attention. No one ever chose me for anything.

"Patty," she repeated," you are Star. Come and get your script (剧本)."

This is impossible! How can it be? With a pounding heart and cold, sweaty hands, I felt nearly dizzy, but incredibly happy. I walked up unsteadily to get the papers. On returning to my desk, I felt regretful. I should have refused. I felt as if everyone else were looking at and laughing at me. I buried my head in my arms. Gently patting my shoulder, teacher Alice said, "Be confident, Patty. You can do this. I know you can. I'll help you." With tears in my eyes, I raised my head and nodded firmly.

So, I practiced every day- while walking to school, at lunchtime, before bedtime, even on weekends. At first, I was worried about forgetting parts of a long monologue (独白) that took place in one scene, but I managed to memorize it. I felt more confident after that. At last, it was the day for the show.

During this past year, I've had a car trouble. When it happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn't bothered to help. At that time, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.

He saw the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log(木头) on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.

I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.

The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

Arthur was messy. He didn't try to make messes, but he didn't try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was done eating. His socks never made it into the hamper(洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs(碎屑)into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.

One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. "Not right now," Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.

"You know what, Arthur? I'm not going to ask you again. I'm done cleaning today." And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.

At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom's spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn't like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur's feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. "Mom, where are my socks?" Arthur called.

"There weren't any socks in your hamper, so I didn't wash them," Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.

Mrs. Oreille was a very economical woman to the point that even her husband was hardly allowed any pocket money. Although they lived a rich and comfortable life, it really pained Mrs. Oreille to see any money spent. Whenever she had to spend anything, no matter how necessary it might be, she slept badly the next night. Her husband, Mr. Oreille, was continually saying to his wife, "You really need to be more generous. You see, we never get to enjoy our income." "It is better to have too much than too little." She used to reply to that. She was a little woman of about forty, very active, very neat and tidy, and with a very bad temper(脾气).

Mr. Oreille frequently complained about his wife. For two years, he had always come to his office with the same old patched umbrella, which amused his colleagues a lot. At last he got so tired of their jokes that he insisted on his wife buying him a new one, a good silk one, for twenty francs. He also asked her to bring him the bill, so that he could see that its quality was all right. She bought him one for eighteen francs, and said, getting red with anger as she gave it to her husband, "This will last you for five years at least." Mr. Oreille felt quite achievable, and received a small applause at the office with his new umbrella. His colleagues even very much envied him!

When he went home in the evening, his wife said to him, "You must take care of your umbrella well, for I shall never buy you a new one again." She took it to put it away safe, but suddenly was shocked with anger.

It was about ten years ago. It was a cold, wet and dark winter day. A fine rain was falling, which left my clothes wet through and froze my bones. I was walking over to visit my Dad. Although his house was only a short walk from mine, I was already wet and suffering. I knocked on his door and stepped in. A warm steam was floating from the kitchen. It touched my nose and suddenly I was eight years old again. Dad was making Grandma's special sauce (料).

When I was growing up, every Sunday Grandma would make us an Italian feast. She would cook her spaghetti (意大利面) sauce for hours. Then she would drop in potatoes, chicken, meat balls, sausage and sometimes even steak (牛排). It always left our stomachs full, our hearts happy, and the house smelling sweet.

I sat down while Dad made me a plate. It felt so good having a meal like I used to when I was a boy. We talked about those old times and laughed over the memories both good and bad. And I noticed something too. I didn't feel cold anymore. Oh, my clothes were still wet from the rain but my heart was warm, my spirit was light, and both my face and stomach were smiling.

Dad and Grandma have been gone for years now. I still miss them both every single day. And although my daughter and I both know how to make Grandma's special sauce, we don't cook it as often as we can. Maybe it is because no matter how hard I try, I can never get it 100% right. I think that maybe I am missing a material. Or maybe it was just the Love with which Grandma and Dad cooked it that made it so delicious.

Paragraph 1:

I decided to make the food filled with love at last.

Paragraph 2:

I want to give a taste of love to the seniors in the nursing home nearby.

An A for Mrs. Bartlett

I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying.

On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.

The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy's name was called. So I'm in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!

Then I heard it. The last group: "Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina." I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits (不合群的人)!

There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the "good" group.

I am Russian, but for the last five years, I've lived in Kansas. What brought me to this country was my American husband, John. I work in a department store, where my coworkers pronounce my Russian name so sweetly. Every time I hear it, I feel as though my mom is embracing me.

In my native country, people believe that Americans always keep big smiles on their faces even if they don't have a real reason to do so. The American smile, the Russians have decided, is not genuine.

Last year, John encouraged me to go see my mom back in Russia. My manager even gave me a month off for the trip. (When you live an ocean apart from your family, you need at least a month to visit them.) I bought a plane ticket and packed my suitcase. Then came COVID- 19. My mood became gray as I realized I couldn't go to see my mom.

A couple of weeks later, my sweet coworker Miss Donna, asked me. "So what's happening with your trip to Russia?" I told her that I had to cancel it and that I wouldn't be able to see my mom this year.

Miss Donna didn't say anything at first. Then she put on a big American smile and said, "Well, you can come over and see my mom!"

Oh, my Lord! (That's what my husband always says when he's at a loss for words.) Imagine, a mom for loan! I honestly don't know whether I would offer the same to someone in need of a mother's warmth, but my new people sure would do it for me. I know that because of the virus you shouldn't hug friends, but you can still embrace someone's heart. That's how my heart felt at that moment: hugged. So, yes, believe me, the American smile is genuine.

One time, the teachers at a school wanted to teach the students about airplanes. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this.

Then, the science teacher, Mr Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. The students would produce paper airplane designs. They would stand in line on the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win.

When Mr Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited. A student named Paul, who was on the wrestling team, bragged(吹牛)to everyone else that his airplane would win. "I am the strongest," Paul said. "So I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest." However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.

Brian realized what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn't go very far, so Brian took another sheet and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.

One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.

"Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?" Mom asked calmly.

"I guess…," I murmured under my breath.

"Sweetheart, we are going to a children's shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you," she explained.

I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there?

When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad.

Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars (伤疤) such as cuts, scratches and burns. What a terrible life they had before they moved here! My heart sank.

As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.

……

I returned to the shelter with Mom several times.
