Bob, the son of a high official and the team leader, as well as Fatima, Norbert and Sally, planned to discover a hidden treasure they had heard about. They arrived at a wood, which lost itself in the shadowy distance. Bob was wise but spoiled. After a few minutes, he was worn out and so impatient that he jumped down from his horse, dying for water. The jugs (水罐) were almost empty. " I'm getting tired of dragging you through the forest looking for the hidden treasure. " said Bob.
" I would like you to remember the terms (条款) of our agreement, as well as your high payment. Mister Bob. " said Norbert, who was also terribly thirsty.
This made Bob even more impatient and thirsty. He spat on the ground, looked up at the sky, frowning.
" As long as you pay me the remaining half of my fee, I'm not likely to complain much beyond this point. " said the cowboy and he turned his eyes to the old wooden building containing the local bar.
"I would like a long tall drink of cold water first though. "Fatima, who knew that Bob would not find any water.
Suddenly, there came a dull roar(咆哮)and the strong wind lifted the dust from the ground and into the air. Quite a number of trees fell down with the four people's cry. Suddenly Norbert shouted at the top of his voice, " RUN!"
Then, they all ran away at the speed of light and stuck together, closing their eyes. After the storm, everyone slowly opened their eyes and looked at the others. They all began to smile because they found that no one got injured. Bob was touched by the scene, his heart bursting out the feeling of warmth in the blink of an eye, which was like the sun shining in winter. At the same time, the feeling of impatience faded away.

One snowy day, the winds grew stronger and the snow turned into a blinding snowstorm. A farmer sat down to relax before the fire for the evening. Then he heard a loud knock, something hitting against the window. He looked outside but could not see anything. So he went outside for a better view. In the field near his house he saw, of all the strangest things, a group of swans.
They were apparently flying to look for a warmer area down south, but they had been caught in the snowstorm. The storm had become too blinding and violent for the swans to fly or see their way. They were trapped on his farm, with no food or shelter, unable to do more than wave their wings and fly in aimless circles. He had sympathy for them and wanted to help them.
He thought to himself, the barn (谷仓) would be a great place for them to stay. It was warm and safe; surely they could spend the night and wait out the storm. So he opened the barn doors for them. He waited, watching them, hoping they would notice the open barn and go inside.
However, they did not notice the barn or realize what it could mean for them. He moved closer toward them to get their attention, but they just moved away from him out of fear. He went into the house and came back with some bread, broke it up, and made a bread trail to the barn. They still did not catch on.
Starting to get frustrated, he went over and tried to drive them toward the barn. They panicked and scattered into every direction except toward the barn. Nothing he did could get them to go into the barn where there was warmth, safety, and shelter. Feeling totally puzzled, he exclaimed, "Why don't they follow me? Can't they see this is the only place where they can survive the storm? How can I possibly get them into the one place to save them?"

Disappointed and upset, Tom found his money box empty. The coins lying on the bed added up to $36.22. But the bike he wanted cost $88. Where and how could he get the rest of the money? He knew his fellows all had bikes, without which he couldn't hang around with them on weekends. He thought about asking his parents for money, but soon gave up because he knew it wouldn't happen.
Earning money seemed to be the only way. So he had to find a job first. He decided to turn to Mr. Jackie for advice, who usually had opinions in most things. "Well, you can start right here. The floor needs cleaning and my car needs washing." Then Tom's part-time jobs began. For two months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was surprised by a variety of jobs people found for him to do. He could hardly remember how many cars he had washed and how many windows he had cleaned, but he knew his dream would soon come true because the money kept increasing. The day finally came when he counted all the money he earned and found nearly 100 dollars. He couldn't wait to go down to the shop to buy his dream bike.
It was by hard work that he bought the bike he had been dreaming of. So he cherished it very much. He had achieved what he thought was impossible, and that was more valuable than the bike.

Zahra was only a girl of 8 when she heard Mom andDad talking about her little brother, Ali. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money. Only a very costly surgery could save him now but they couldn't afford the operation. Their faith in his survival was fading away. One day, Zahra heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with desperation, "Only a miracle (奇迹)can save him now. "
Zahra went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jar from the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. One dollar and eleven cents! Carefully placing the coins back in the jar, she slipped out and made her way six blocks to a Drug Store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist (药剂师) to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Zahra twisted her feet to make a noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound. No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!Paragraph 1:

A friend of mine, named Jack, received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Jack came out of his office, a street urchin(顽童)was walking around the shining car. "Is this your car, sir?" he asked. Jack answered, "Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas." The boy was surprised. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it did cost you nothing? Sir, I wish…"He hesitated (犹豫),Jack thought of course he knew what the boy wanted, but what the boy said surprised him greatly. "I wish," the boy went on, "that I could be a brother like that." Jack looked at the boy in surprise, and then he said again, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?" "Oh yes, I'd love to ,"the boy answered.
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, "Sir, would you mind driving in front of my house?"
Jack smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Jack was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked.

My name is Manan, and I am in the sixth grade. Of all the festivals, Diwal is a Hindu festival that is celebrated in autumn, is my favorite because I can set off fireworks and eat delicious foods during the festival.
One day, I went shopping for fireworks with my grandfather. I was looking at the brightly colored fireworks when suddenly I bumped into a little boy. All my fireworks scattered out of the bag.
I quickly bent down to pick them up. Then I noticed the boy's face was full of wonder and amazement as he stared at my fireworks. It appeared as though he had never seen any this closely. When he bent down to pick them up, I snatched them from him and quickly put them back in my bag. As I stood there looking at him, I realized there was something different about this boy. His clothes were old and torn; he looked as though he had not eaten for a few days.
On reaching home, I finished my dinner quickly and ran out to set off the fireworks. I was fascinated by the variety of colors that burst open from the fireworks and lit up the sky, but my wonder was short-lived. I noticed that my grandfather had gone inside the house coughing. Wondering why, I looked around and noticed all the smoke that may have been irritating his throat. Feeling bad for only a second, I continued lighting the fireworks one after another. But, inside me, it felt different—I felt guilty about taking pleasure from bursting the fireworks.
I could feel my conscience pricking me, "Manan! How can you do this? It just takes a few minutes for all the money to disappear in smoke, but the boy you met today looked like he did not even have the basic necessities of life. The children in orphanages also need love and help. Didn't you see how your fireworks have affected Grandpa too? Can you still ignore these things and indulge in this kind of fun?" Realizing the worthlessness of this temporary pleasure, I really wanted to use the money in a more rewarding way. I started thinking about my own way to celebrate Diwali.

Being the only deaf boy in the class meant Alex always had to sit in the front row directly in front of his sign language interpreter, Ms. Barringer. He hated sitting in the front row. He'd rather be able to see everyone and everything, not just Ms. Barringer and the chalkboard. In fact, having to sit in the front was the only thing he didn't like about his new school.
This morning he felt particularly uncomfortable. A few minutes earlier, he had swallowed water at the fountain. Now he felt a straining (一阵拉紧) in his stomach as a bubble (气泡) of wind rose into his throat.
He glanced behind him. Ms. Barringer waved to get his attention and then pointed to his half-finished composition to let him know he should be writing and not looking around the room. Alex tightened his chest muscles to hold back the burp (打嗝) as his mother told him it made an offensive noise. However, he remembered the day before, in the crowded hall, he had burped and nobody had even noticed.
Last year, none of this had mattered. A few of his friends' parents at the Lakeside School for the Deaf had warned that he might find going to a hearing school too hard. But Alex wanted to be like his older brother, which meant attending Wilson Middle School. He had told everyone he wasn't afraid, but now that he was here, he found that fitting in wasn't easy. It was the fourth day of school, and he was still eating lunch by himself.
No longer able to hold back the burp, he covered his mouth in case there was a sound and let the burp go. Every kid looked up and stared at him. Ms. Barringer shook her head as if to say, "Oh, Alex, you've done it now." When he saw that Brian, the boy next to him, was laughing, he felt his face burning.

Gramma Goodie visits her grandkids every Sunday afternoon. Every visit starts the same. First she rings the doorbell. Then Chris bounces down the stairs. Jamie runs to open the door. And every time, Gramma Goodie has gifts. But the kids never know what she'll bring.
Sometimes it's stuff you need, like socks or underwear. It could be a kite or a stuffed baby kangaroo. It could be a lollipop that turns your tongue bright blue.
Well, one Sunday, Gramma rang the doorbell. Chris hurried down the stairs. And Jamie threw open the door.
"Hello, my darlings," Gramma Goodie said with a smile. "Look what I have for you" She pulled out a deck of cards, and they played "Go Fish" all afternoon. At the end of the day, Gramma gave everyone kisses. Then she said her good-byes.
As she drove away, Chris and Jamie heard their parents talking. They said that Gramma Goodie's birthday was next Sunday. They were going to plan a special dinner and bake a delicious cake for her birthday surprise.
"Gramma Goodie has a birthday?" they thought. Both were a little confused. Grown-ups have birthdays? Who in the world knew? "Well, we have to get her a gift," Jamie decided. "But what?" asked Chris. "Gramma Goodie has absolutely EVERYTHING!"
Jamie thought about scarves, flowers, and perfume. But Gramma had plenty of scarves, a humongous rose garden, and bottles of French perfume. Chris thought about books, pillows, and a flute.
A diary? She had one. An umbrella? She had that, too. A radio? There's one in her kitchen. Oh, what would Chris and Jamie do? They spent all week thinking. They thought in math class. They daydreamed during recess. They thought themselves to sleep! Nothing came to mind.

At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below. "NO!" she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk the cow was in Mama's daisy patch (雏菊地) .
I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束) at the fair next week, but Buttermilk was eating the flowers.
Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. "Why can't you stay in the field?" she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.
Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, "When I grew up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble." Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk's collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.
"Thank goodness!" Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.
She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or trampled (踩踏).
Mama came out of the house. "What's going on?" she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.
"I forgot to lock the gate," Taylor said. "I'm so sorry."
"I know you are" Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. "You learned an important lesson today."
Taylor's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.

School was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle (毛毛雨). I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste. A weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers' warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy (嫉妒), but something like dismay (沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking (嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the numerous cars and saw my friends' faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache occasionally. She looks like a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a skilled person of DIY, she knits (编织) most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I'd force a smile and reply in a half-joking manner: homemade. She simply doesn't seem to understand what's in fashion; Chanel or Banana Republic doesn't mean anything to her.
I couldn't remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp, or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been fun riding with her. I had enjoyed watching our shadows growing longer and shorter in an alternate fashion by the light of the streetlamps along the road. Just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

There was a time when I had some difficulties in my life. I felt depressed all day long. Nobody could make me cheerful. One thing that happened made me change.
One day I went to the park for a rest. There was an empty bench and I sat down. To my surprise, a young boy came around. He looked tired from playing. He stood in front of me and said with great excitement, "Look what I have found!" I looked down and saw a small flower lying in his hands. It was a withered(枯萎的) flower. Its leaves were dry. I thought to myself, "What a pitiful dead flower-just like my depressing life!" I felt even more depressed. I wanted him to go away, so I gave a smile and then turned my back on him.
However, instead of walking away, the boy came to sit down next to me. "It surely smells good and it's beautiful, too! That's why I picked it up," he said. "Here, it's for you." I knew I had to take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower and said, "Thank you." I waited, but the boy didn't put the flower in my hand. He just held the flower and didn't move. It was not until then that I noticed the boy couldn't see anything.
My voice quivered(颤抖) and tears ran down my cheeks.
It was Mother's Day and I was shopping at the local supermarket with my son who is five years old, Tenyson. As we were leaving after finishing our shopping, we realized that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and hit her head on the ground badly. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Fortunately, a lot of people stopped to help out.
While we were walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very worried about what had happened to the elderly couple. He said to me, "Mom, it's not much fun falling over in front of everyone." Seeing that there was a flower stall(摊位)at the front of the supermarket, he added, "Why shouldn't we buy the lady a flower? It will make her feel better." I was amazed that he'd come up with this sweet idea. So we went over and told the flower seller what we wanted. "Just take it," she replied. "I can't take your money for such a wonderful deed."
By now medical staff had arrived, and were looking after the injured woman. There we saw the old man was also in great horror, but he tried to comfort his wife and held her hands tightly to encourage her to be strong. We gave the flower to the woman's husband and I told him it was from my son. At that, the old man started crying and said, "Thank you very much." He then turned to me, "You have a wonderful son. Happy Mother's Day to you."
The man bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Regardless of being badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile. And my son went down his body to the injured lady and tenderly said, "Happy Mother's Day to you, too."

Mai Lin wasn't doing well enough at school, or at least she wasn't satisfied with herself. She wished she could do better.
"Let's review the material we learned in the last unit," the history teacher said. "Who can tell us what caused the War of 1812?" Mai Lin sat at her desk, staring ahead. She hoped the teacher wouldn't call her name. They hadn't studied the War of 1812 at her old school and she didn't know the answer.
"Alison?" the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Mai Lin thought. Of course Alison would have the answer. She seemed to have all the answers. Alison was the most popular girl in school – always surrounded by millions of boyfriends, best friends, and others. She was like a brilliant sun.
Mai Lin hadn't made one or two friends of her own so far. Her old school was small and low-key, but a shy person like Mai Lin had a chance there. This new school, however, seemed as big as an airport to Mai Lin, and it seemed very hard to get around in it. She still got lost sometimes in the school.
Mai Lin frowned (皱眉) as Alison answered the teacher's question. Alison probably never got lost, Mai Lin thought to herself. You could probably put Alison down in the middle of a desert, and within five minutes she'd be able to tell you the best way to get home.
History class finally ended, and Mai Lin headed for the gym. The class had been playing basketball. Alison, who was as tall and thin and attractive as a tree, was very good at it. Beside her, Mai Lin felt like a very small and foolish ant. Today, however, the gym teacher pointed to a thick rope hanging from the ceiling and said, "Everybody! You're going to climb this rope today. "

Aly wandered toward the garden, where Miss Strawbridge, the landlady, was planting flowers. Last week, Aly and her parents had moved into the house in Miss Strawbridge's backyard.
Aly watched silently until the old woman looked up and asked, "Why the long face, Aly?" "There aren't any kids around here to play with." said Aly. Miss Strawbridge's blued eyes twinkled. "You should just like Rachel who used to live here." said Miss Strawbridge. "Too bad you two young girls couldn't have lived here at the same time."
"What did Rachel do when she was bored?" asked Aly. "She planted a flower garden by the shed(棚子)in the backyard." answered Miss Strawbridge. Miss Strawbridge handed Aly a trowel(铲子)and held out a box of flowers. For the rest of the afternoon, Aly pulled the weeds, dug and planted. But when she stepped back and admired her blue and yellow flowers, she smiled. Still, it was too bad that Rachel wasn't there to share it.
The next day, Aly watered her flowers, then wondered what else she could do. She walked across the yard to the garden, where Miss Strawbridge sat reading. She stood silently until the old woman looked up. "What else did Rachel do when she was bored?" asked Aly. "She wrote poetry in her flower garden." Miss Strawbridge answered. "One of her poem even won the first prize in a contest at school. The best way to learn how to write poetry is to read poetry." She handed Aly her book.
For the rest of the afternoon, Aly lay on her stomach in the cool grass next to her flowers and read Miss Strawbridge's book of poetry. After a while, she got some paper and a pencil from her house and scribbled(乱写)and erased. In the end she had a poem that might not be a prize winner but sounded good enough to make her smile. Still, it was too bad that Rachel wasn't there. They could have read their poems to each other.
The next day, Aly watered her flowers, then wondered what else she could do. She rushed across the yard and knocked on Miss Strawbridge's door. "What else did Rachel do when she was bored?" Asked Aly when Miss Strawbridge opened the door. "She played in the old shed and pretended it was her house." Answered Miss Strawbridge.
Aly glanced back at the shed and then at Miss Strawbridge, Miss Strawbridge twinkled. "There's nothing in the shed that you can hurt or that can hurt you." She took a key off a hook next to the door and handed it to Aly.
She raced back into the shed, only to find a few chairs and boxes resting on the dusty shelves.

A Terrifying Experience
"If mum finds out that I'm going to the beach, I'll be in big trouble." I muttered(嘟囔)to myself softly.
I crept slowly down the stairs and tried to walk casually into the kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door, mum asked without looking up from her "dish-washing", "Where are you going?" I answered back without hesitation, "I'm going to the garden to play." After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed a sign of relief. My plan had worked out fine so far. I scaled(攀爬)the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running towards the bus-stop at top speed.
After half an hour, I was at the beach scanning the crowd for my friends, Jimmy and Bobby. After a while, I spotted them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunks(泳裤). For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.
Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore. I wanted to show off my swimming skills so I decided to get the ball for them.
I dived into the water and started swimming at a steady pace. After swimming for about ten minutes, I became tired but when I saw that the ball was only a few feet away from me, I put in an extra burst of speed. However, just as I was going to grab the ball, a very strong current swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed tangled(缠绕)up with my feet and l could not swim properly.
I struggled to keep afloat but it was no use. "If I had listened to mum and dad, this would never have happened," I thought silently.

At around 6 pm, Jane and her husband, Charlie were driving on the road. They were incredibly excited because they would attend the dream wedding of her daughter Iris the next day. As they drove beyond a town heat their destination, the sky grew darker and darker and suddenly the rain poured down. When they were approaching a bridge, a wave of fast-moving water washed over the top of it.
Within seconds, the rapids had lifted the little white car into the river. It happened so quickly that they were too shocked to scream. Finally, the car caught an object in the middle of the river.
Muddy flood water was pouring into the car and rising quickly. Jane knew they had to get out quickly before the water rose too high in the car. Forcing the door open, Charlie jumped into the flood from the back row. Meanwhile, Jane grabbed the front door handle and tried to open it but in vain. "Try it again!" her husband shouted anxiously.
Hearing that, Jane took hold of the handle, using all her strength, and was able to pull the door open. She came out of the vehicle and finally reached Charlie, coughing and shaking. They leaned tightly against the back of the car and screamed for help.
At the same time, a truck driver called Joe was complaining about the bad weather in his truck parked in his yard near the river. He had planned a road trip. Suddenly, carrying over the roar of the water, he heard screams coming from the river and rushed out immediately, spotting a car in the river. "I've got to do something," he told himself. But how did he approach the car in such a complete darkness? Without thinking twice, Joe returned to his truck and drove to the river bank. Then he turned on the headlights and got a long rope from it. After that, he fastened the one end of the rope to the truck tight.

I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen, whom I'd met in a Face-book group. Two years ago, on December 30, when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to tackle 11, 240-foot Mount Hood. My parents were happy I'd finally found a hobby.
It's safer to start winter climbs at night when there's less risk of the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 a. m, following the paths alongside the ski runs. The temperature was about 14 degrees. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued on together.
After about five hours, we reached Devil's Kitchen, a plateau at about 10, 000 feet, just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind was violent. My exposed skin felt as though it were burning. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead. We had ice axes, helmets, and crampons (冰爪). We were prepared for the climb.
The trail we followed grew narrower and steeper. Suddenly, I heard a crack, and a whole block of ice broke off the ice step, right under my foot.
In an instant, I fell backward. I could hear Mel calling my name as I rolled down the mountain as if I were a character in a video game. I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything. My clothes were torn into pieces, my helmet was broken, and my face was bloodied from cuts and scratches. Then I took a survey of my body to see where I was hurt, starting with my head, then my neck and arms. For the most part, I was fine, except that I was suffering from a sharp pain in my left leg.
As Mel made her way down, I shouted for help, and other climbers came to assist me. A couple of them were trained EMTs. They fixed my leg and called Portland Mountain Rescue. Mel stayed by my side while I tried not to cry from the pain.

The fall on a mountain can change everything.
One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, "I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp" and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
"Tom!" she cried. "Help!"
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter (直升飞机)r. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

My ex-husband had made some very bad choices in his life, and I did not want my children to pay for them all their lives, so the boys and I talked and we decided to move. We moved 2,700 miles from home. We had a small car that pulled a small U-haul over the Rocky Mountains. I could barely read a map (my 8-year-old reads them great, I learned).
We arrived in our new town three days later, and found an apartment. I started the boys in their new school and went to our new home to unload the U-haul. I had brought all the clothes, dishes, blankets and toys that I could fit in the U-haul. As I began unloading, a lady whom I had briefly met the day before was driving down the road and she stopped to help me unload and carry everything up the three flights of stairs. After getting moved in, I was blessed two days later when I found a job.
Things were going great. The boys went to the Boys & Girls Club after school, and I would pick them up after work. In December, two months after moving, the manager of the Boys & Girls Club called me and said that there was a group of people who wanted to choose a family for Christmas and would I mind if they chose our family. My first thought was no, because we had all the love we needed for the holidays, but then he said that my children had told him that there was no furniture in the house, and this group had a lot of used furniture, and that the boys and I would be making them very happy. So I agreed.
They called me and asked what the boys wanted for Christmas and I told them that anything would be appreciated, and I told them what their favorite toys were.

I have taught Spanish to thousands of students over my 36 years at Walpole High School in Walpole, Massachusetts. My students have ranged from the most academically gifted to the academically at-risk There is one young man, however, who in the course of his high school career surpassed everyone's expectations. His name is Vincent Lee.
Vincent entered my classroom as a nervous freshman on his first day of high school. He was enrolled in our Spanish course, a transition course for students who underperformed in Spanish I. In fact, Vincent had not had a lot of success in Spanish in middle school. His eighth grade teacher had described him as that "sad, introverted (内向的) boy in the last row who always kept his head down. "
Vincent often went to class unprepared and couldn't see the point of learning another language. And yet there were other reasons to explain this lack of motivation. Vincent was dealing with a lot of turmoil (混乱) in his life: the recent divorce of his parents, moving from a house to an apartment and much greater responsibility at home for helping his mom take care of his younger twin brothers.
From the very start of my course, I sensed an attitude that separated Vincent from his peers. He entered class each day, took his seat quietly and took out what he needed for the lesson. At first, he was somewhat shy about answering questions in Spanish, but as the course progressed, I was able to engage him in conversations about his family, his interests and his passions.
With time going by, Vincent became more willing to volunteer and even ask me questions. He seemed fascinated by the fact that my parents were from Costa Rica and that I was fluent in both English and Spanish. When he once asked how long it takes to become fluent in another language, I explained that it takes many years and that the first sign that a person has adopted the language as his own is when one dreams in that language.
