Located halfway up the Italy's Apennine Mountain, about 1 00 miles northeast of Rome, the Hotel Rigopiano has never been easy to reach. But its isolation(隔绝)only adds to its appeal, attracting a great number of tourists.

Snow began to fall across the Apennines in January and lasted for days. From his home in the Rome suburbs, Matrone watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Cicioni, had planned an overnight getaway to the hotel. But now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were battling a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early.

As they awoke the next day, they discovered that their difficulty had worsened overnight. The cars in the parking lot were invisible. The phone and power lines were down. They were having breakfast when the hotel began to shake. An earthquake with a magnitude(震级)of 5. 7 had struck the mountain. "Get out of here!"Matrone shouted to his wife. They headed quickly to the parking lot, where others were digging their cars. Fifteen minutes after the first earthquake, another quake hit, this one measuring 5. 6.

With a dozen vehicles freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a six-foot-high wall of snow. Matrone climbed out of his car and investigated it. There was no road in sight, "We're trapped!" he told his wife. So they had no choice but to make their way back to the hotel.

As it was getting dark, they managed to be back. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche(雪崩)before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed and size, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those caught inside the hotel were left buried in the icy rocks and ruins.

Para1, When Matrone came to himself, he was stuck in the darkness.

Para 2 It was not until the next morning that the rescuers finally arrived.

Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn't wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother's Day, and he usually tried to make it "back home", but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, "I know what I will do, I'll send my mother some roses ."

He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it "How many roses can I get for fifty dollars. Ms.? " the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.

"No. I have to have roses," he said, "my mom was badly sick last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. 1 want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite." He was stubborn,

The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric was touched by the boy's voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been blessed(幸运的)in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy's roses.

The girl looked at the young man and said, "OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars." The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.

Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard(墓地).

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help crying when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. Getting around aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged man busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she had to leave. The man behind the stand noticed Jenny and asked, "Hey, do you want to have the noodles?" "Oh, yes, but I don't have money," she replied.

"I'll treat you today," said the man. He brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. "What is it?" asked the man kindly. "Actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house." Hearing the words, the man smiled, "I only gave you a bowl of noodles. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your thankfulness to her?"

Jenny sat there, speechless; she remembered her mother's familiar face. "A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven't I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?" On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

In the dark forests of Russia, where the snow lies on the ground for eight months of the year, there are large groups of wolves. It is a fearful thing for travelers, especially If' night falls, to hear the hungry howls of the wolves as they get nearer and nearer.

A nobleman, with his family, was travelling in a sleigh(雪棉)over a plain. The sleigh was driven by his committed servant, who had worked his whole life for him. At nightfall they reached an inn, and the nobleman called for more horses so that he could continue his journey.  The innkeeper begged him not to carry on. "There is danger ahead, "he said. "The wolves are out. "Not caring about the repeated warnings, the nobleman and his family left on their way.

The sleigh travelled quickly over the hard snow, and there seemed no signs of danger.  Suddenly the little girl said to her father, "What was that strange howling sound I heard just now?" Her father replied, "Nothing but the wind is blowing through the trees. "The child shut her eyes, and kept still for a while. However, in a few minutes, with a face pale with fear, she turned to her father, and said, "Surely that is not the wind! I hear it again. Do you not hear it too? Listen!" The nobleman listened, and far, far away in the distance behind him, he heard a sound of the wolves.

Whispering to the driver, he said, "They are after us. Get your gun ready. We may be able to get away from them. Drive on! Drive on!" The man drove as fast as he could, but nearer, ever nearer, came the howling.

In 2000, when I was around seven years old, all my family were coming back from a T-ball game, which was our usual weekend adventure, but unlike every other weekend, a surprisewas waiting for us in our driveway – two adult geese and a small goose. Obviously startled by our return, the adults flewaway in panic, with their baby, too young to fly, left in place, tiny and delicate.

Hours passed one after another, and night eventually fell. However, with it also came a deep chill and a fearof watchful animals. It was apparent that the gosling needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we had to help it, and we brought him onto our back yard.

We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose away to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, though, and neither would they come close enough to claim him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. Realizing the young goose had clearly decided we were his family by then, we had to give him a name, calling the little guy Peeper, because he would often follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫) noise, nonstop. Besides, we decided that Peeper was a boy. I don't know why; it just felt right.

A year passed and we settled into a routine. Peeper slept on our back yard each night and, in typical goose fashion, used it as a latrine (公共厕所). My dad would spray off all the goose droppings daily. Part of this ceremony included Dad throwing Peeper up into the air so he could flap its wings and flew a loop (圈) around the house, and then came back again once the porch was clean.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months.

It was 1st January, the first day of the year and a holiday for me. What luck! I started by thinking of getting the bank work out of the way. The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, paid little attention to my polite "Happy New Year" as usual. He nodded and I sat in front of him.

Minutes passed and nothing happened.

Then very hesitantly I put my form and booklet (小册子) in front of him. He was busy filling up entries in his register. After a few minutes, he took my form and from his cabinet he took out a very thick file from which he started filling in my details. I sat there wondering why we had computerized banking if we were still filling in forms and registers.

After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I uttered (说) the words, I felt as if a bomb had fallen on him. He shouted, "Nothing is done, it will take time!"

Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had turned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt how this man must be feeling, when customers like me came always in a hurry to get their work done.

He had been working at this counter for God-knows-how-many years. We do not even feel the need to thank him for being there. He must be feeling so annoyed that "here comes another person who will push me for doing his work first."

On an instinct (本能) I told him, "Sir, you please have your tea, I am not in a hurry." This man, who I had been seeing for the last few years, suddenly looked up at me and for the first time we had eye contact—he had never made eye contact earlier. I saw a different person there, another human being who was as hard-pressed for time as I always am.

Jenny and Lisa are close friends. They're studying in high school now.

One day about half a year ago, Jenny went to Lisa's house after she finished her homework. After entering Lisa's home, Jenny found that Lisa was chatting on her cellphone. Jenny was surprised as she didn't know Lisa had gone downtown to buy a cellphone.

After Lisa finished talking over the cellphone, Jenny asked her, "When did you get your cellphone?"

"I bought it yesterday. Look! How lovely it looks!" said Lisa.

Jenny looked at the cellphone. It was pink and looked really lovely. Jenny wished she also, could have such a cellphone.

That day, after Jenny came back home, she saw her father sitting on the sofa reading a newspaper. Jenny approached him and said, "Dad, could I have a cellphone? Many of my classmates have their own cellphones now."

"Of course, you can have one," said Jenny's father. Hearing that, Jenny became very happy.

"Thank you, Dad," Jenny said happily. Then she asked, "When shall we go downtown to buy one?"

The father looked up hearing that. Then he said, "Oh, no, dear! I'm not going to buy you a cell-phone. If you really want one, you should make money to buy one yourself."

Jenny immediately became upset. But she knew her father was serious. She walked away and went to her own room.

The following day, Jenny went to school as usual. When Lisa saw her at school, she looked a bit upset. Lisa came to her and asked why she was wearing a long face that day. Jenny said, "I asked my dad to buy a cellphone for me, but he said I should work for one myself."

But Lisa didn't seem to be surprised at all, and she said, "Don't get surprised, because that's how I bought my own cellphone."

Hearing that, Jenny remembered Lisa once told her she was helping look after the Smiths' one-year-old son in the past summer. Now she knew why she worked part-time that summer. Lisa wanted a new cellphone and she worked to make money for it.

It was my first university day of new term, which I had been looking forward to in the summer vacation. Mother decided Dad should accompany me though I thought I could manage it myself. Everything here appeared a little fresh to me; yet I still had a butterfly in my stomach. The letter of admission said my dormitory was Room 512 on the fifth floor.

I climbed the stairs slowly, carrying a big suitcase, my father following with two bigger more. By the time I set foot onto the fifth floor, I got entirely burnt out and at the same time had a feeling of loneliness. Worse still, Dad missed a step and fell on his back, sending my new suitcases rolling down the stairs. "Damn it! (见鬼!)" he screamed, his face turning red. I knew storm was on the way. Whenever Dad's face turns red, look out.

How could I ever get him to finish unloading the car without screaming at me and making a scene in front of the other girls, whom I would have to spend the rest of the year with? At that point, doors along the narrow passage were opening and strange faces peering out (探出) with curiosity, as Dad walked with difficulty close behind. I felt it in my bones that my college life was getting off to a bad start.

"Wish to find the room quickly!" I prayed as I walked with my head bent. "Get him into a chair and calmed down." But then again, would there be a chair in my dormitory? Or would it be a purely empty room? I didn't know what was in store for me.

For weeks, the troop had been busy preparing for its Parents' Night program. Everything was in order. The walls were filled with displays, the scouts (童子军) were all enthusiastic. The tables were covered with good things to eat.

Now it was time for Jimmie Davis to give his speech. This was the moment he had been looking forward to for several weeks. As he arose, he caught a glimpse of his mother's bright face and his father's calm, confident expression. Jimmie held his head high as he started his speech, his words bursting with pride and enthusiasm. He made sure the speech was lively and moving, conscious that his listeners were showing high praise to him by their careful attention.

Then something happened. The world seemed to move slowly from side to side before him. He felt his mind went blank and forgot what to say next. He slowed down, faltered (结巴), and finally stopped. His face turned red, and his hands sought each other wildly. In desperation, he looked toward his scout leader, begging for his help.

Having heard that boyish but great speech practiced again and again, the boy's scout leader supplied the missing words that allowed Jimmie to continue. But somehow it was different now. The wonderful speech had been messed up.

Jimmie paused again, and once again the scout leader helped him. For the remaining two minutes, the speech seemed more like the scout leader's than Jimmie's.

After what seemed like ages, the speech was finally over. In the heart of Jimmie, who sat down knowing that he had failed, there was a great weight pressing down on him. Disappointment was clearly written on the face of his mother. A twitch (抽搐) of the father's face showed how painful he felt.

The audience applauded in a perfunctory (敷衍的) way, feeling sorry for the boy who they thought had failed.

But the scout leader was on his feet. His eyes twinkled. All the audience listened carefully.

In our kitchen, there was a wooden table and three chairs - one for Pa, one for Ma, and one for me. I tried not to look at Pa's empty place. Pa had gone to the city to look for work. He had been gone for a long time.

Every night, lying awake in bed, I waited for the train to stop, waited for the sound of his work boots dropping on the step, and waited for his voice calling, "I'm home!"

Every night, as I lay there, I stared at the window and the curtains Ma made from empty flour sacks (面粉袋). Sometimes the train stopped - for someone else's Pa coming home. Not mine, not yet.

Every night, Ma came to kiss me good-night - after the train had gone by. She had been listening, too. "Go to sleep. Your Pa'll be home soon. Maybe for Thanksgiving."

How could I be thankful without my Pa?

I went to sleep with the sound of train wheels in my head, whispering, "Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow."

One morning, the smell of coffee woke me. I ran into the kitchen. There he was! Pa lifted me onto his shoulders. "How's my boy? You've gotten so big that I can barely lift you up anymore."

He put me down, and I stared at the two sacks on the table. One said FLOUR. I tried reading the other: S-U-G-A-R. Pa whistled admiringly and winked (眨眼) at me. Ma didn't say no when Pa sprinkled (撒) a bit of that precious white sugar on my bread.

Ma said, "I'm going to bake a pie for your Pa's homecoming dinner. Go downstairs, Jimmy, and bring me that jar of apples." She smiled at me with a "mind now" look.

There was no need. I knew how to be careful. It was the last jar - the one we had been saving and saving to welcome Pa home. "When Pa comes home, there'll be apple pie." I could hardly remember what pies tasted like.

A wealthy man and his son liked to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire these great works of art.

When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. Unfortunately he died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was in deep sorrow for his only son.

About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, "Sir, you don't know me;I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and killed him instantly. He often talked about you, and your love of art. "The young man held out this package. "I know this isn't much. I'm not a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this. "

The father opened the package. It was a picture of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in surprise at the way the soldier captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay for the painting. "Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It's a gift. "

The father hung the picture on the hall. Every time visitors came to his home, he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.

The man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction(拍卖)of his art collection. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having the opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

Frey grabbed his bat and glove, and raced out of the door towards the Jack's. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day, so they could make the team in the following semester.

Jack was waiting outside for Frey. "What are you doing? Where's your stuff?" Frey asked, lifting his bat onto his shoulder. Jack shook his head, "I have to clean Mr. Willow's garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can't do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Willow's. She thinks they're kind of old and can't afford to hire a cleaner."

To get the work done earlier, Frey offered to help. The boys went down the block to the Willow's and got started. They found a couple of brooms. Before they swept, they put boxes scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Jack put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn't sealed, so he opened it. Out of his surprise, there were several one hundred dollar bills inside.

"You've got to see this." He pulled out the bills and showed Frey, "It just fell down when the box fell. There's got to be several hundred dollars here." Jack looked past Frey to the garage door and continued, "Nobody's here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know." Before his voice died away, Jack had already drawn out one bill and stuffed it into his pocket.

Frey frowned and shook his head. "Are you crazy? That's stealing." Jack ignored him and protested, "Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don't get paid. It's not really stealing. It's kind of payment for my hard work. And one hundred will do for a bat and glove in Igo's Sports Store". With this, Jack put the rest money back.

Frey was about to grab the money from Jack's pocket when they heard a voice, "Hello, boys. Come in for a chocolate cake! Mrs. Willow made one for you." Mr. Willow walked into the garage.

Daniel got a job as a delivery man to work his way through college. His parents couldn't save up all the money he needed to get into law school, so since he was 15, he would take summer jobs and find some other jobs between studies to earn extra cash.

The boy was determined and every day he would wake up at 5 a.m., summer or winter, riding on his old bike to deliver parcels. It wasn't an easy job, especially during winter. Besides that, his old bike was slow, making things harder. But that wasn't a problem for Daniel.

Daniel's schedule was always the same every day and people in the neighborhood already knew him.

He called them by their names, and they would often wave and greet him as he passed.

It was a normal day and Daniel was delivering parcels as usual. "Morning, Daniel! Check out my brand-new mountain bike!" called out a man whose home Daniel visited frequently. "Morning, Mr. Warren! That's a really fancy bike!" Daniel screamed back at him as he rode towards his first delivery. He couldn't help imagining what it would feel like to own a bike like the one Mr. Warren had just shown him. "My deliveries would double with that" he thought longingly.

Suddenly, Daniel lost balance and fell on the road. He got up and leaned the bike against the wall to see what had happened. He found a nail stuck in the back tire (轮胎) and he unluckily had a flat tire.

As he turned around and tried to think of what to do, he saw something unusual. A strange man Daniel had never seen before furtively (鬼鬼祟祟地) looked around and placed a package under his jacket. "Hey!" Daniel shouted at the man. "Hey there! What are you doing? That's not yours!" The man heard Daniel and started to run as fast as he could.

My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen for a while. There had been some talk of COVID-19 on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going about their daily routines. Even though everyone in group felt perfectly, we took precautions(预防): we washed our hands with soap and used hand sanitizer(洗手液), did not share food, and had no significantly close contact.

A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. She had felt some mild symptoms for a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On the following day, I started to feel a little tired and my head was a bit cloudy. I decided to stay in the master bedroom away from the rest of my family. The next morning, I woke up with a 39-degree fever. That was when we realized that I might have caught the virus from our friend.

At once, Megan called our state's coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head of our local hospital system's coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who had been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an urgent care center located 5 kilometer's drive from my house. The result made my heart sink-I was also tested positive, and the local hospital didn't have the facilities for my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay home and quarantine(隔离)myself.

Following the doctor's advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our kids. With my symptoms developing, I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in food. She slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids' rooms. She also minimized her contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.

The father asked his son, “What is this?" The son replied, “This is a crow."

After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?" The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It's a crow. "

After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for third time, “What is this?" This time, the son was irritated (生气) and said to his father in a low and cold tone, “It's a crow, a crow."

After a moment, the father yet again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?" This time his son shouted in his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? I have told you already, ‘It's a crow'. Are you not able to understand this?"

A minute later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered (破旧的) diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the read it, the following words were written in the diary:

“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window edge. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied him 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn't at all feel annoyed, but instead felt a deep affection for my innocent son. "
