Dear Bill,
Yours,
Li Hua
A quite funny thing happened to me last Friday. It was a fine day and I went to London to do some shopping. I had planned to get some Christmas presents. I also needed to find some books for my course at college as I am a student of Oxford.
That morning I caught an early train to London, so by early afternoon I could buy something that I wanted. Anyway, I'm not very fond of London, all the noise and traffic, and I made some arrangements for that evening. I took a taxi to Waterloo station. I couldn't really afford a taxi, but I wanted to catch the 3:30 p.m. train. Unfortunately, the taxi got stuck in a traffic jam, and by the time I got to the Waterloo station the train had just gone. Disappointedly, I had to wait an hour for the next one. While I was waiting, I bought myself an evening newspaper, The Standard, and wandered over to the station buffet (自助餐). At that time of the day it was nearly empty, and I bought a coffee and a packet of biscuits (饼干)—chocolate biscuits. I'm very fond of chocolate biscuits. I found that there were plenty of empty tables and I sat by one near the window, where I could cozily enjoy my beverage and biscuits. Then, I began doing the crossword. I always enjoy doing crossword puzzles.(填字游戏)
After a couple of minutes a man sat down just opposite me. It seemed that there was nothing special about him, except that he was very tall. In fact, judging from his clean dark suit and a fine briefcase, he looked pretty like a typical city businessman. I didn't say anything and I carried on with my crossword.

My family has always loved going to Disneyland. So in 2001, when Disney announced that they were opening California Adventure, it was a big deal. I remember I was only six years old when I went there for the first time. I've been told that as a child I was very naughty and energetic, but always well-meaning. There was just this joy I got from making people angry. This relates to going to California Adventure for the first time ever with my grandmother and it is my oldest memory with her.
On this fine day of fun and all things Disney, we reached the park's Ferris wheel, called the Sun Wheel (now Mickey's Fun Wheel). If you do not know what the Sun Wheel is, I can briefly explain; it is the most terrifying Ferris wheel in all existence. Why? Well, the seat that you sit in, while 160 feet in the air, slides inward and outward as the wheel rotates (翻滚). If you rocked it hard enough, it could almost do a complete 360-degree spin (旋转). This creates a terrifying experience because it is like a 160-foot-tall swing.
So I stood in the line with my grandmother, and neither of us had any idea that this was not an ordinary Ferris wheel. After a long wait it was finally our turn to ride it. We sat inside, began to rise up and that's when I discovered the ride's special feature. I started with slow, easy rocking and my grandmother began to fear for her life. Worried we would fall out, she asked me to stop.
Paragraph I: Since I was a very naughty boy, I rocked it harder...
Paragraph II: But to my surprise, my grandma actually enjoyed the terrifying experience with me... ……
Elizabeth walked to the yard, carrying a bunch of daisies (雏菊)
Beautiful flowers for. for... Oh. I'll never get it right!" she cried, throwing the daisies on the ground. She had been practising her speech for a week.
Part of her couldn't wait. This Saturday, the great Ana Wolff, famous pianist, would perform at the concert hall in town. For four years, Elizabeth had listened to Ms Wolffs recordings over and over again, loving the way the notes flowed like a rushing mountain stream.
Part of Elizabeth was terrified. Her music teacher at school, Mr. Leaf, had asked her to present the flowers to Ms Wolff after the performance. But Elizabeth knew herself well. She had severe stage fright and she really hated it when she had to talk in front of people. Even so, Elizabeth was determined to take the challenge this time.
"How's the speech going?" asked Elizabeth's mother. "Want to practice on me?"
"No, thanks." said Elizabeth. "Mum, I can't do this! I'll forget. I might even pass out!"
"Oh, honey. Think about it… sharing the stage with Ana Wolff. What an honour!" Mum gently comforted her.
Elizabeth kept practising. "Beautiful flowers for… for a beautiful performance…" She presented the flowers to the cat, the dog, even the statue in the garden.
Soon it was Saturday night, Elizabeth stood at the backstage, behind the heavy black curtains. Holding the bouquet (花束) of red roses, she felt her heart racing wildly and her stomach tightened with nervousness.
The lights dimmed, and Ms Wolff began her performance. She swayed and nodded with her fingers dancing across the keys. Soft sad parts, loud angry parts, parts that sounded fun to play, Drawn into the music, Elizabeth forgot for a moment about the six words she had to say. With a flourish, Ms Wolff played her final note. Applause thundered through the hall. People jumped to their feet and cheered.
Ms. Wolff smiled and bowed. Then she walked off stage and into the wings. Almost immediately, she returned to the stage for a second bow.

Long long ago there lived an administrator(管理者) who often thought, "Nothing good can come to a town or a village whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems. "One day, he had an idea to teach people a lesson.
The administrator dressed up and went to a village nearby. He placed a large stone in the middle of the main street and hid gold coins under the stone. Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched.
The first person who came along the street was a milkman with his cart. He crashed into the stone, spilling the milk everywhere. "What fool put this stone here?" he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away.
A moment later, a group of women down the street, each balanced a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and limed away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
The administrator kept watching all day as many people complained about the stone, but he found nobody making an attempt to move it. The administrator was deeply disappointed. "Is there no one this village who feels it very important to keep their neighbors from harm

Just then, a young girl was coming along.
The administrator stepped out from behind the tree,
A light rain was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the shop, eager to get home and play with the presents that our parents had prepared for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the shop was a gas station where the bus stopped., which was closed for New Year, but I saw a family standing outside the locked door, gathering closely together under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.
Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents' house for our annual family dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station.
My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turn-off for my grandparents' house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father made a U-turn in the middle of the road and said that he couldn't stand it. "What?” asked my mother. " It's those people back there at the station, standing in the rain. They've got children. It's New Year. I can't stand it.”
When my father pulled in to the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children—--two girls and a small boy, who were getting wet standing there. My father rolled down his window, “Happy New Year, " he said.
“Thanks. You, too,” the man replied. He was very tall and had to bend slightly to look into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I looked at the children, and they looked back at us.
“Are you waiting for the bus?” my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and chances of a job. Knowing the bus wouldn't come along for several hours, my father invited them to our home to shelter from the rain.
Paragraph 1:
The man thought about it for a moment, but then refused. ……
Paragraph 2:
When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door happily. ……
When I was little, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of all kinds of flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother as she read stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.
I will never forget one day when I was in the third grade. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's (旁白、解说员) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home after school that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.
It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. "I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds," she said, pulling it up by its roots. "From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden."
"But I like dandelions," I protested. "All flowers are beautiful —— even dandelions."
My mother looked at me seriously. "Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn't it?" She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. "And that is true of people too," she added. "Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that." Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

It was a Saturday afternoon. The color of the sky was changing, first light gray, then dark gray, and finally dark and dense. The wind was blowing heavily, and the trees were swaying in the strong wind. It began to rain cats and dogs. Soon, the road was filled with puddles from the rain.
On such a stormy afternoon, my mother took my fiveyearold brother, Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper. "So many toys," the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy color, "that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all!"
Christopher and I couldn't have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain, as fast as our little legs could carry us. We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to. "Christine! Take care of your young brother!" Mother shouted at the top of her voice.
"Christine! I'm going to find the Lego section (乐高积木区)! There's a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars! Maybe I can buy it!" Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly. I only half heard him. I took a right turn and, to my wideeyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie (芭比) World.
I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple math in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside. I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered (闪烁) once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness. Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning illuminated the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.

Norwood, a junior at St. Petersburg^ Lakewood High School, participated in the school's Athletic Lifestyle Management Academy. The program prepares students for various careers in health science with two components. The first one is a hands-on skills component where the students have to demonstrate that they are expert in the skills of adult, child and infant CPR (心肺复苏术), how to help somebody who's choking, as well as how to use an AED (自动体外除 颤仪).And the other is a written test component, showing that they master that knowledge. Norwood took a great interest in the programme, which was in line with her initial career pursuit in the future.
On the first day of the programme, her instructor Miller did vital signs and students learned how to take blood pressure, check pulse, and apply CPR. Norwood watched closely and performed the hand-on skills well.
Norwood and Simmons shared a long friendship. They had been friends since the seventh grade and since then they had built an unbreakable bond. The following day after school, the 16- year-old girl Norwood was driving three friends home in St. Petersburg, Florida, when another driver slammed into her from her left and sent her car rushing forward in an uncontrollable way.
“We crashed in someone's yard and I hit the tree," Norwood said. The impact jammed shut the driver's side door, so Norwood climbed out of the front window. Two of her friends managed to get out of the car unharmed, but the collision caused her 16-year-old friend Simmons to hit her head on the backseat window.
When Norwood turned around, she didn't see Simmons running with them so she had to run back to the car as fast as she could. Simmons was just sitting there unresponsive. Apparently, she passed out owing to the huge impact force. The unexpected crash left the girls in panic. A lot of people started to gather around to see what was happening. The crowd watched in astonishment, open-mouthed. Someone advised to make an emergency call immediately.

The eightyearold Carol lived with her father David, mother May and elder brother Rob. The little family happily lived in a beautiful village surrounded with beautiful_nature. The village was at the foot of a mountain, with beautiful views of the snowy mountain. The family survived on growing seasonal plants and trees. Their life is totally surrounded by nature and beauty.
While they lived a very happy life, Carol did not love the beautiful atmosphere of the village.
She really wanted to move into the city and enjoy the city life. She wanted to shop, move around the city, watch movies, _and eat in fantastic restaurants and cafes, etc.
However, there was hardly any chance that Carol's family moved to the city as they had everything in the village.
One day, Carol fell asleep during the early noon and she had a sound sleep. Of course, she had a strange dream. She saw her grandmother in her dream as a fairy and her deceased grandmother granted her a wish. Carol requested her that she should love to enjoy the city life as she always desired.
Grandmother understood the desire of Carol, but still wanted to convince her that the peaceful village life is better than the city life.
She told Carol, "Baby, you cannot have access to fresh fruits and vegetables from plants as you have at your home. You cannot breathe fresh air. You cannot play with animals. You can hardly find any trees. You will not find peace as you see here! Do you still want to go to the city?"
Without hearing the concerns, Carol asked her grandmother to grant the wish. Grandmother granted her wish, but with a condition. Carol was told that she would only have 6 hours to spend in the city. Later, she would return to the village. Carol agreed.

Mr. Taylor checked again: water, food, bandage, medicines, a compass, and a map wrapped in plastic... Bingo! He put all that he prepared for the coming hiking into his backpack.
Mr. Taylor was fond of hiking, this time in particular, for it was the first time for him to hike with his two sons, Harry and Joel. Joel liked reading books about explorers and Harry joined the hiking club in his school this term. "It will be an unforgettable experience, definitely." he whispered to himself, unconsciously a smile spreading over his face.
Harry and Joel, however, argued for the first three miles of their hiking trip. Harry accused Joel of wearing smelly old shoes. Joel blamed Harry for using all of the bug spray(喷雾防虫剂). Harry told Joel he smelled terrible. Joel called Harry a coward(懦夫).
"Will the two of you just quiet down and enjoy our hike together?" their father said. "You're missing all of the beautiful scenery!"
It was true. Neither Joel nor Harry had taken notice of the bear their father had spied at the start of their trip. They hadn't looked up at the eagle he pointed out overhead. Worst of all, they hadn't paid any attention to the turns and twists along the way while they continued their argument.
"Joel threw a stick at me!" Harry screamed. "That's not true!" Joel shouted back.
Mr. Taylor could no longer contain his anger. "And both of you need to stop arguing!" he erupted. As he turned to face them, his left foot caught on a root. He slipped backward and down muddy bank, falling into the river that ran alongside the path.
Harry and Joel raced to their father's assistance. They helped him up out of the water, and then dragged his wet backpack up onto land.
Fortunately, their wet-through father found himself just slightly injured.

I lay on my bed, legs leaning against the wall, desperately wishing my mother would call. But I remembered the last time I'd seen her, right before the train for Providence pulled out of the station, "You know how expensive it is to call," she said, then hugged me tight and said goodbye.
This was my first birthday away from home. I missed my mom, missed my sister, and most certainly missed the special pound cake my mother always made for my birthday. Since getting to college that year, I would watch jealously as the other freshmen received care packages from their parents on their birthdays—- and even on ordinary days. Big boxes containing summer slacks and blouses, packages or M&M's and Snickers, things they needed and things they didn't. Instead of feeling thrilled about upcoming eighteenth birthday, I felt empty. I wished my mom would send me something, too, but I knew that she couldn't afford presents or the postage. She had done her best with my sister and me—-raising us by herself. The simple truth was there just was never enough money.
But that didn't stop her from filling us with dreams. "You can be anything you want to be," she would tell us. "Politicians, dancers, writers —- you just have to work for it; you have to get an education."
Thanks to my mom's sacrifices and big dreams, I'd made it to the Ivy League; Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
As I was recalling these things, my roommate joined me on the bed. "Hey. after we study, Let's buy ice cream and cake." I nodded, closed my eyes, and imagined the came Mom would have made. Mmm. I could see the golden yellow of each of twelve eggs, and I could almost smell the vanilla(香草)filling the house while the cake baked.

In 2000, when I was around seven years old, all my family were coming back from a Tball game, which was our usual weekend adventure, but unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway – two adult geese and a small goose. Obviously startled by our return, the adults flew away in panic, with their baby, too young to fly, left in place, tiny and delicate.
Hours passed one after another, and night eventually fell. However, with it also came a deep chill and a fear of watchful animals. It was apparent that the gosling needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we had to help it, and we brought him onto our back yard.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose away to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, though, and neither would they come close enough to claim him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. Realizing the young goose had clearly decided we were his family by then, we had to give him a name, calling the little guy Peeper, because he would often follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫) noise, nonstop. Besides, we decided that Peeper was a boy. I don't know why; it just felt right.
A year passed and we settled into a routine. Peeper slept on our back yard each night and, in typical goose fashion, used it as a latrine (公共厕所). My dad would spray off all the goose droppings daily. Part of this ceremony included Dad throwing Peeper up into the air so he could flap its wings and flew a loop (圈) around the house, and then came back again once the porch was clean.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months.

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell, "How stupid you are! You're good at nothing." David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn't give it much thought. But the next day to his surprise, the comment "well done" from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Brown always corrected the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice to improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown's encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book randomly off the shelf and took great interest in the notes in the margin (页边空白). The further he read, the more intrigued (着迷) he was by the notes. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful and profound mind. John couldn't help picturing in his mind what kind of people the owner would be.
In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner's name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With extreme delight, he couldn't contain his curiosity and spared a lot of time and effort to locate her address. Eventually and fortunately, all the efforts paid off, He wrote her a letter without any hesitation introducing himself and inviting her to respond.
During the following years the two grew to know each other through the mail, exchanging ideas covering all aspects ranging from classic works to current events, which brightened each other's life handsomely. John once requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting--7: 00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York. "You'll recognize me, "she wrote, "by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel (翻领)."So at 7: 00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.
A girl in a green suit was coming toward him, and she has black hair pulled tightly into a knot at the back of her head, her figure long and slim and her eyes amazingly charming blue, which quickened his heartbeat. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, with a strong voice yelling at the bottom of his heart but didn't spot the red rose on her lapel. It was just at this moment that he saw Hollis Maynell—a woman well past 40, with a bright-colored rose on her coat. The girl was walking quickly away.

In the first and second grades,I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn't very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong.
So in our school's annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded (僻静的) corner to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes.
One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, "Oh, Mary, you're great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny!" But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, "Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and 1 could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don't want to, I won't force you. It's your choice."
My mind was spinning faster than the windmill(风车) on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role. She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, "If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon." I looked into Mrs. Sally's shining blue eyes and said, "Okay, I'll try." I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was.
In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered my lines and songs.

Paragraph 1:
The big day came at last.
Paragraph 2:
At that time, Mrs. Sally came backstage for her final check-up and noticed my nervousness.
I wanted everyone's praise and acceptance, but I was my own toughest critic. After I graduated from high school and moved out on my own, I began to put pressure on myself to succeed in the adult world. Meanwhile, I was feeling very inadequate and unsuccessful.
I had always been a thin-to-average sized person. But suddenly, I was convinced that I was overweight. In my mind, I was FAT! I began to control my food by trying to diet, but nothing seemed to work. I slowly cut back on what I ate each day. With every portion I didn't finish or meal I skipped, I told myself that I was succeeding, and in turn, I felt good about myself—attractive, strong, successful, almost super-human. I could do something others couldn't: I could go without food. It made me feel special, and that I was better than everyone else.
People around me began to notice my weight loss. At first they weren't alarmed; maybe some were even envious. But then the comments held a tone of concern. "You're losing too much weight." "Elisa, you're so thin." "You look sick." "You'll die if you keep this up." All their words only pleased me that I was on the right path, getting closer to "perfection".
I cut back on my food more and more, until a typical day consisted of half a teaspoon of nonfat yogurt and coffee in the morning, and a cup of grapes at night. It even got to the point where I no longer went out with my friends. I couldn't—if I went to dinner, what would I eat? I avoided their phone calls. If they wanted to go to the movies or just hang out at home, I couldn't be there—what if food was around?
My poor nutrition began to cause me to lose sleep. I found it hard to concentrate on my work or to focus on anything for any length of time. I was pushing myself harder and harder at the gym, struggling to burn the calories that I hadn't even eaten. My friends tried to help me but I denied that I had a problem.
