"There's more to life than bills and money." The sentence comes from the film Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things. The film talks about minimalism, a style that supports the idea of "less is more", while also questioning the thought that material things bring happiness. The principles* of minimalism show how we can take a serious look at the ways we spend money to live a more purpose-driven, joyful life.

A recent study carried out by Northwestern University shows that people who place greater value on material things have a higher chance of becoming low-spirited. People buy more, earn more in order to buy more, create more stress earning more, and are more likely to be low-spirited because of stress.

Minimalism presents a way out from that. Rather than working to buy more, we can spend less. It focuses on things that improve our lives, serve a purpose, and bring happiness.

Minimalists tell us we can use minimalism in all areas of life: relationships, technology, social media . . . It means using not only our money, but our time and attention purposefully so we fill our lives with things that bring us happiness. Minimalism helps avoid things like spending too much or mindlessly checking your phones. It is all about the reexamination* of your priorities so you can remove the extra things—the possessions, relationships and activities —that are of little value.

For each of us, different things have their own value. If some artwork brings some meaning to your life, great! If Saturday rides make you happy, then go for it. The minimalist lifestyle won't look the same for everyone. You can bring more happiness into your life by slowly testing what you can live with and what you can live without. In the end, minimalism is about creating the freedom to enjoy a happier life.

A notice was posted in front of a restaurant in Tianhe District, which reads "If you've met difficulties in Guangzhou, come in an ask for a free meal."

The restaurant is run by a couple—Rong and his wife, both are local Cantonese. According to Mrs. Rong, the restaurant was opened in December 2020 and was once in a difficult situation as a result of the COVID-19.

The couple deeply felt the warmth of being helped by others. Just as what they've written on that notice, "In the future, remember to help those people around you."

Rong had seen a restaurant in Malaysia that provided free meals for people who needed help.

Mrs. Rong said the free meal doesn't have a fixed mene. She and her husband will prepare food based on what they have in the kitchen that day.

"If he or she is willing to sit down, we would like to bring him a cup of tea and treat him as an ordinary customer," Rong said.

Cost is an unavoidable part of running a restaurant. "Not many people come for free meals anyway. I can afford a simple meal with meat and vegetables for them," he laughed.

A. However, Rong doesn't think it matters.

B. Thanks to the help from their friend, the restaurant finally survived.

C. People who come in for a free meal are mainly the elderly or disabled.

D. At that time, he thought if he opened his own restaurant, he would do the same thing.

E. And they wanted to try their best to pass the love that they have received to more people.

The high-temperature vacation (高温假) is over. It's true that time always flies fast during the vacation. The weather was hot and I could not do much work, 但是我过得很快乐。

As it was hot in the afternoon, I did my work in the morning.  I got up at 6: 30 and took a walk in the garden for half an hour. After breakfast, I started reading English and Chinese and did some exercises on math. 我花费三个多小时完成它们。 I worked quite hard and made great progress (进步). I spent the afternoon outside. Usually I went to swim and it was funny. I went back home at about five or six o'clock. Sometimes a friend of mine would come to see me and we would listen to music for some hours.

In this way, I spent my vacation happily. I studied well. Also, I became a good swimmer.

Now I am in good health and high spirit (精神).

In June 2019, Curtis Whitson, Krystal Ramirez and their son Hunter decided to go backpacking along California's Arroyo Seco River. Things went well for the first two days. On June 16, Whitson led the trip to a waterfall.

They had planned to use a rope(绳索)to come down the side of the waterfall. However, when they arrived there, Whitson found the water flowed (流动)too fast. To make matters worse, their rope was missing.

Since going back was dangerous as well, they tried to find other ways to get around the waterfall. But there was no other way out.

The three tried shouting each time they heard voices and even threw a stick. When neither worked, Whitson decided to carve (刻) a "HELP" message on the side of his water bottle. Before throwing it in the waterfall, he also put a dated note in it. He hoped that someone would find it. Then the three found an open place to camp for the night. Before sleeping, they put a blue floor cloth on the ground and spelled "SOS" out using white rocks. They also used a headlight to lighten the sign. After midnight, they heard a noise and woke up. A helicopter was flying overhead. Help arrived.

Two hikers had discovered the bottle and reported it to the police. Whitson said, "They didn't leave their names or phone numbers. They just did what was right in their heart, and took it seriously. I can't thank them enough. "
