There is lots of junk(垃圾) in space. Some of it is from rockets. In 1996, a rocket broke into about 300,000 small pieces. So far, scientists have found over 10,000 man-made pieces flying around in space. Only 6-7%of them are satellites and space probes (探测器). Astronauts also lose small things while working in space. In 1965, during the first American spacewalk, astronaut Edward White lost a glove. For a month, the glove stayed in space, travelling at a speed of 28,000 kilometers per hour .It became the most dangerous piece of clothing for the Earth in history it flew away. Things move very fast in space. If they hit(碰撞)one another, it can be dangerous .A little piece of paint from a satellite once made a hole in a spacecraft window. Last year two US spacecraft dropped some bolts(螺栓), and scientists on the Earth worried a lot. Luckily the bolts floated(漂浮) away into space. They couldn't hit the spacecraft.

The summer I turned 12, I wished to grow up more quickly.
Summer camp was coming and I was so worried about my1that I'd gotten into a big argument with my mom.
But I'll 2it!" I cried. I was certain that everyone would see me as nothing more than "the short girl".
You won't know anything 3 you get there, "calmed my mom. And I had to 4.
On Monday, my teacher Maggie told us about the climbing course, and my heart sank when I saw the wall I was the 5 one to try to climb that huge wall. It might have been ten floors high, and knew that I had no 6 to succeed. But I had to, after the other campers finished.
I asked for a "short person's pass, "smiling 7 and walking around the wall.
"You know. Amy, what the mind can believe, the heart can achieve. "8 Maggie. "I'd really like you to do your best to 9 the wall. "
I pretended (假装) to hurt my knee_10I could avoid it.
"How's the knee? Does it hurt a lot?" Maggie asked. She was so kind, which made me feel11because I didn't like to lie.
Maggie was really patient, showing me12 she climbed the wall. And some campers were there cheering for me.
I didn't want to13anymore, and I didn’t want to give up again. I could see how much everyone believed in me, and I wanted to show them how much I valued their14, so I kept trying.
And then something15happened—I made it! "What the mind can believe, the heart can achieve," Maggie reminded me. And this time I knew it was true.
Stonehenge, a rock circle, is not only one of Britain's most f historical places but also one of its greatest mysteries. Every year it receives more than 750, 000 v. People like to go to this place especially in June as they want to see the sun r on the longest day of the year.
For many years, historians b Stonehenge was a temple where ancient leaders tried to communicate with the gods. However, historian Paul Stoker thinks this can't be t because Stonehenge was built so many centuries ago. "The leaders arrived in England much later, " he points out.
A popular idea is that Stonehenge might be a kind of calendar. The large stones were put together in a certain way. On midsummer's morning, the sun s directly into the centre of the stones. Other people believe the stones have a medical purpose. They think the stones can prevent illness and keep people h. "As you walk there, you can feel the energy from your feet move up your body, "said one visitor. No one is sure w Stonehenge was used for, but most agree that the position of the stones must be for a special purpose. Some think it might be a burial place o a place to honor ancestors. Others think it was built to celebrate a victory over an enemy.

On Saturday morning, every boy in town was happy, except Tom Sawyer. Tom's aunt said he had to paint the fence (围栏). It was thirty yards long and three yards high! When he was working, some boys came along and made fun of him.
Ben was the first one who came happily with an apple in his hand.
"I'm going swimming," said Ben. "Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, don't you?"
Tom got a little angry, but soon he had a wonderful idea.
"Work?" he said. "I don't think this is work. It's fun. Dos a boy get a chance like this every day?"
Ben thought about this. He was watching Tom's every move and was getting more and more interested.
After a while, he said, "Tom, will you let me do some painting?"
"No way. You see. Aunt Polly wants it to be done properly. I'm the only one that can do it right." "Oh, please, Tom," begged (恳求) Ben. "I'll be really careful. Let me try! I'll give you my" apple in return.
"Well, all right, Ben," said Tom. "But you must be careful."
He gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. He started to eat Ben's apple.
All day, boys passed by and wanted to paint. When Ben got tired, Billy began to paint. He gave Tom his favourite kite. Then Johnny gave him twelve marbles (玻璃弹子), and so on.
That afternoon, Tom got many toys, and the fence got three coats of paint. Aunt Polly was so pleased when she saw the painted fence that she gave him a large cake!
Everybody talks about the weather. It's the most popular topic of conversation(谈话). For example, people may say to each other, “Isn't it a nice day?” “Do you think it's going to rain?” or “I think it is going to snow.”
Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. One man may say, “Do you see how cloudy it is in the east? It is going to rain tomorrow.” But another man may say, “Yes, it's cloudy in the east, so we are going to have a fine day tomorrow.”
When a farmer needs water, he looks for something to tell him it is going to rain; he won't believe other things. When people are having a picnic, but it begins to rain, they will be so sure about something that shows the weather is going to be fine very quickly.
Almost everyone listens to what the weatherman says. But he does not always tell us what we want, and sometimes he makes a mistake.
|
A. People often hope for the weather they want. B. However, he still probably comes closer to being right than most people. C. But they don't always agree with each other. D. They won't believe that they will finish their lunch in the rain. E. All these are the common ways to start a conversation. |
My best friend, Connie, is two years older than me. We spend a lot of time together.
Connie has long dark brown hair and her eyes are big and round. People say she is1and looks like a doll. When we go out, people often2that I am older than her because she is shorter and slimmer(更苗条的).
Connie is positive(乐观的)even when things go3. Last week she got her examination4, which were not very good. I thought she was going to be5.Instead, she simply decided to do better the next time. Then, every day after class,6teachers are free in their offices, she will ask them for help.
Connie gets on well with others. Everyone in my family7her, even my younger brother. When you hear her laugh, you will naturally(自然地)laugh8. When I feel unhappy, I will talk to Connie and she will make me feel9.
I think my10with Connie is very valuable, and I hope we will always be best friends.
It is believed in some ways that the daughter is father's lover. But my experience has taught me in a different way. For a long time, my father has been a very vague figure(模糊印象) to me.
He was a man of few words, tall but slim and nothing else. When I was in a primary school, my father was never there to pick me up, and be never came to any of my parent-teacher meetings. He was always busy doing projects. I remember when I was in a middle school and my bead was badly hurt in a PE class. During my operation, my father was nowhere to be found. This hurt me most. At that moment, I considered my father as a cold-blooded man who did not care about me at all.
But things seemed different at my high school graduation ceremony. Where I was chosen to represent my class and give a speech. My father, once again, told me he had a business trip in a place outside the city and would be unable to show up "Don't come. I will be nervous if I see you." I told him.
I remember my speech went smoothly. After the ceremony was over and I was about 1o leave. I suddenly noticed a familiar(熟悉的)looking man sitting in a corner of the hall. It was my father! I was so surprised that I rushed to him with tears running down nay face.
"Well done," he said. His eyes were also filled with tears.
Later, I found out that my father had managed to finish his work by staying up late. And he drove for eight hours to get back. He had been sitting in the corner because he didn't want me to see him. My father remembered every word in my speech.
For much of my life, I described my father was a cold- blooded man who only eared about his work. But when I thought deeply about this, it was obviously(明显地) not true. At my graduation ceremony I could feel my father's deep love. The fact is that seeing is not believing, and seeing may not be the fact if we don't perceive(感知) the world with our hearts and minds. There's no doubt that life doesn't lack(缺少)love, but sometimes our eyes have trouble seeing it.
There was a garden full of plants. In the corner of the garden, a1rose grew. She was as white as snow, and the plants around her were shocked at her 2. But the white rose couldn't see3, so she didn't know how beautiful she was. Sometimes, she was even a little envious of the sunflowers around her. She hoped that she could be as4as them.
One sunny day, a girl went into the5. She walked around and was amazed at the beauty of nature. Suddenly, she saw the white rose. "It hasn't rained for days. " said the girl. "And the weather report says it will continue to be6for a few days. If the rose stays here, it will7soon. I`ll take it home and put it in my beautiful vase. "
The white rose was put in a lovely vase by the window and then she8the window. From the reflection in the window, the white rose saw herself for the first time. "Is that me?" She was excited. "Till now I didn't9how beautiful I looked. "
Sometimes we think other people are very great and10know our own advantages. This makes us feel less confident of ourselves. Pay more attention to yourself, and you'll find how great you are.
You may like sweet potatoes, but there are some facts you may not know about them. Let me tell you.
|
First Found in American Countries They're in the family of plants that includes morning glories and they are not in the same family as yams. Yams are from Africa and are more closely related to lilies(百合花). |
A 5000-Year-Old Food When Christopher Colum-bus arrived in American countries in the 15th century, sweet potatoes were already a main crop. He took some with him back to Spain and by the16th century, gardens all over Europe were growing them. |
|
A Healthy Choice White potatoes maybe cheaper than sweet potatoes but sweet potatoes have more nutritional (营养的) value. Also, white potatoes can lead to the blood sugar problem and some other health problems. |
Health Facts A Rich Source of Beta-Carotene(3-胡萝卜素) This powerful Beta-Carotene gives sweet potatoes, their yellow, gold, or orange coloring and changes to vitamin A in your body. It's thought to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer and provide protection against heart disease. High in Fiber(纤维), Low in Fat Sweet potatoes are high in fiber which is great for health. Also, they have very little fat. |
Typhoon is a very big wind. It usually starts in July, August and September
How does a typhoon come? In summer, when the sun heats down on the sea, the water gets hot. Then the hot water evaporates and goes up into the air. When the air gets very warm, it starts to move high up into the sky, and starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky. And when the wind moves faster than one hundred and twenty kilometers an hour, a typhoon comes.
Typhoons are of great danger. When a typhoon comes, it usually brings strong winds and lots of rain. We should be careful when it comes. Don't go out or play on the beach.

Tony is not old, but he does not have much hair. His wife Helen has thick, black hair. They have one daughter. Her name is Betty, who is five years old. There is a photo of her father in the living room.
One day, Betty looked at her father's photo for a long time and then asked her mother, "Mummy, why does Daddy have little hair?" Helen laughed and replied, "Your father has very little hair because he thinks a lot. He's a clever man. "
Betty looked at her mother's thick, black hair for some minutes, and then she asked, "Mum, why do you have a lot of hair?"
