What's My Line (台词)?
"One of my actors is sick! He has just one line and you're the only one who fits his clothes!" One afternoon, the school drama(戏剧) director suddenly shouted to me. She seemed so nervous and worried that I felt sorry for her and said, "OK".
"You will be fine. It's easy!" she said. But it wasn't easy at all. On the stage(舞台), four other actors and actresses spoke their lines, and I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. I couldn't even breathe. I just wanted to leave. The next thing I knew, I was running off the stage.
As I was running off the stage, I accidentally knocked over a glass of grape juice that was on a table. T he purple juice hit the girl next to me – Andrea, the leading actress of the drama. She gave me a nasty look. I thought s he was going to kill me!
But then, Andrea quickly said, "Darling, you're so silly! Let's toast(干杯) to my darling's silliness! Cheers!" She quickly took another glass of grape juice and drank it. The other actors quickly followed Andrea's lead and saved the scene(场面). The audience(观众) thought my mistake was part of the play!
I said sorry to everyone after the play. To my surprise, they were not angry with me. They told me, "It's all a part of being on stage." I could be wrong, but I think I liked being on stage. I think I will try again.
If music makes you smarter and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into an intelligent(聪明的)person.
A team of scientists from Ohio State University did tests on 33 volunteers who were getting better from heart problems following operation(手术). They found that people who exercised while listening to "The Four Seasons" did much better on language ability tests than without music.
"Facts suggest that exercise improve the learning ability of people with heart problems," said the scientist Charles Emery, who led the study. " And listening to music is thought to enhance understanding. We just wanted to put the two results together. " he added.
The volunteers said they felt better after exercising with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to music during exercise. Scientists have shown it is true that music can be good for health. It helps cut down stress, sadness and nervousness. And it also wakes up the body and improves memory and thoughts.
In medical fields, music is used widely for patients who have had headaches before and after operation. "The Four Seasons" was used because of its soft tempo(节拍)and better results in earlier research. "Exercise seems to cause better changes in the nervous system and these changes may have a direct result on learning ability." Emery said.
Scientists have been studying the result of music on understanding since the early 1950s. By 1990, scientists were using Mozart's music to help children with speech disorders. Mozart was chosen because his music is not overexciting. A study showed students who listened to Mozart scored higher marks in an intelligence test. With important exams coming, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music. But perhaps now you have good reasons to argue with them.

How do you feel when you have to make a speech in front of class? What about when you go to a birthday party? Do you get really shy?
Shyness means feeling nervous or frightened when you're around other people. Experts (专家) (find)that more than 80 percent of middle school students feel afraid to be the center of attention. Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences.
It's OK if it takes you a while ( feel )yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everybody (get) a little shy sometimes. It's just a case of how much.
Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they get shy. But some become so shy that they (not go) to a restaurant because they are too nervous ( order) and pay the bill(账单). Some are afraid of (meet) new people, so they seldom go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.
If shyness doesn't stop you from doing something you want to do, being shy isn't a very big problem. Some experts say shy people are quieter and cleverer because they think more and talk less. Shy people are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history (be)shy, too.
You see, being shy isn't all bad. But remember not to let good chances pass by just because of it! If you have to sing a song at a birthday party or practice your spoken English in front of others, just do it! There's nothing to be afraid of.
TENCENT (腾讯) announced yesterday that it will limit the daily time for youngsters to play its popular King of Glory (王者荣耀) game after parents and schools in Shanghai and other areas thought their kids spent too much time playing it.
From tomorrow, children younger than 12 will only be allowed to play the game for no more than one hour a day, and after 9 pm, they can't log into (登入) it, said Tencent. Teenagers older than 12 will be able to play no more than two hours a day. The game system will remind players the time they have been playing and young players will be forced to log out when the time is up. Tencent thought these were the most strict ways in China to stop addiction(上瘾)and the company expected parents didn't need to worry about their kids as before.
There have been several cases reported that children had spent too much money--as well as time-- on King of Glory so did teenagers. Tencent said it will add a new function(功能)to help parents to control children using its games
Since February, parents can receive messages when children log in and spend money on the game after they connect children's game accounts(账号) with their mobile phone numbers. Now, parents can connect phones or computers that their children use to play games, so that they can always keep an eye on the children even if they have several game accounts, Tencent said. It added the ways covered its 200 games, and about 700,000 accounts have been connected to parents' phone numbers.
Song Zhe, a father of a Shanghai high school student, welcomed the ways but was not sure if they would be useful. "I like the new system, but I'm not sure if it is useful, after all, our kids are clever," he said.

I walked quickly out of my church. It was late. My dad was waiting. I stared at the parking lot. Then I saw my dad's little red Honda. "Get in! Get in! Why are you so late all the time?"
The ride home was not much more than five minutes but each minute moved slowly. We were stuck behind an older man. He wasn't going more than 15 kilometers an hour. My dad started to shout, "Learn how to drive, Grandpa!" He hit the steering wheel (方向盘) with his hands. He was really angry.
"Dad, stop it. Why do you always …?" He cut me off, "I'd not get stuck at the light because of this fellow!" The older man got to the light just as it was changing. "You're free! Drive away quickly," I thought. I looked over my dad. "Can you believe that, Stephen? I get stuck at every light. There are so many stupid drivers out there," he said angrily.
Who gives him the right to shout at someone? Anger built inside me. "What if I shouted at my friends when they asked me for help?" I said. I looked out of the window, trying to catch my breath.
" You know, Stephen, I think you are going to be a psychologist(心理学家)," he said. I remember the last time I tried to say something, he had fumed, "Don't tell me how to drive! If I want your opinion, I'll ask for it! Think about what you say before you talk."
Usually, he'd be angry that I would doubt his authority(权威), but this time, he accepted what I had said. A sense of pride rose up in me. It had been a short drive, but it had been the best car ride of my life.
Everyone likes to have fun, but not everyone has much money to spend on entertainment. Here are some free or cheap ways to enjoy yourself.
Go with your friends if you don't want to stay at home. Hike or bicycle with a friend on a nearby path or in a park. If you live in a city, you can go window-shopping. Or you can explore an old part of town and admire the buildings.
Planning and taking pictures can make you aware of the beauty all around you. Photographic equipment can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. You probably already own a camera or a cellphone that can take pictures.
Stop by one to find out what's going on. And while you're there, borrow a book or movie for free. Museums and universities also hold free events. If you can't find a free event, you can volunteer at an event that requires tickets. People who organize concerts and plays need help. You can set up or take down chairs or greet visitors. Sometimes they reward volunteers with free tickets.
Whatever you do, find a friend to share it with. For example, invite a friend for a walk, an event or a time working on your hobby. Hosting doesn't have to be difficult. If your friend comes in the afternoon, you don't have to serve a meal. You can sit and talk, play board games or card games or watch a movie together.

Have you (曾经) imagined how to live without money? As we all know, in the modern world, living without money sounds (不可能). However, an Australian couple have come up with new ways of making it through the years without spending any money. Let's have a look at how they make it.
After they decided to do that, they built (他们自己) a new house which was made of used wood. At first, (没有人) of their friends knew where they lived, so few guests visited them in daily life. They collected cold rainwater to take a shower and raised five ducks to (提供) them fresh eggs. They grew some fruits and vegetables as well, and sometimes even looked for food on the streets. Some people were afraid that the food on the streets would make them (生病的). In fact, they were in excellent condition. Although they had no jobs, they didn't have a lot of time to (浪费). They spent most of the day working for their neighbors so that they could get their next meal.
Not everyone is (勇敢) enough to do this, but they really made it work and they felt happy. One day, someone sent their story onto the Internet and then more and more people knew them. A lot of reporters have interviewed them since they became famous." Maybe some people think we are (疯狂), but free life without money really (满足) us," they said.
The world's largest radio telescope was finished on Sept. 25, 2017 in China.
FAST is a five﹣hundred﹣meter telescope. It is also called Tian﹣yan ("The Eye of Heaven") , with a dish the sire of 30 football grounds, deep in the mountains of southwest China's Guizhou Province. The giant dish is built on a howl﹣like valley.
The surrounding area has "radio silence" as there are no towns and cities within a 5﹣kilometer radius (半径范围) and only one county center within 25 kilometers.
FAST is made up of 4, 450 panels (面板). The second largest radio telescope is in Russia. The bigger dish will be able to pick up weaker signals (信号) .
The radio telescope is like an ear, listening to tell meaningful radio messages from white noise in the universe. With the help of the telescope, we can receive weaker and more radio messages far away in space. It will help us to search for intelligent life outside of the Galaxy (银河系) and explore the origins (起源) of the universe. "Any of its discoveries will lead to a Nobel Prize," said Joseph Taylor, a Noble Prize winner.
The FAST project began in 2011. And the telescope is expected to remain the global leader for the next 10 to 20 years.
Michael Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. When the other kids began to notice that he was wearing the same black pants and blue and gray long-sleeve shirt day after day, Todd, a fresh man at Jr. College Preparatory High School in Memphis, became the target (对象) of taunts and laughter. But there was little Todd could do. His mother was simply not able to buy him new clothes.
Two of the kids were Antwan Garrett and Kristopher Graham, a pair of freshman football players. But over time, they realized that their hurtful words felt like bullying (霸凌) and Todd seemed to slowly fall apart. Something finally became clear.
"I felt like I needed to do something", Graham told CBS News. So he and Garrett made a plan. They went home and hunted through their own rooms. The next day at school, they met Todd at their third-period class and asked him to come into the hall. Todd was surely afraid about being called out by the larger boys.
"He wasn't smiling or anything, and I was like, 'I think this is going to make you smile,' Graham says, "I told him, 'We're in the same third period, and I am sorry for laughing at you and I want to give something to you to make it up." He then handed Todd a large heavy bag. Inside were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sneakers.
Todd was blown away. "I was very happy," he told WATN-TV, "Shocked, completely." And Todd got much more than a new wardrobe(衣橱). He no longer sits alone at lunch. Now, he eats with his new friends, Garrett and Graham.
"I've been bullied my whole life," Todd told CBS News. Thinking of the day Garrett and Graham called him into the hall, he added, "The best day of my whole life, basically."

Germs (细菌) are everywhere. You can't see them, but they are on your desk, on your computer, and even in the air! Like people, germs move around the world. They fly with us on planes. When food, clothes, and other things travel around the world, germs travel, too. Some germs are safe, but some are dangerous. Germs cause illnesses like colds and the flu.
Warmer Weather Brings Germs
The world's weather is changing. Cooler countries are getting warmer, so insects from hot countries can move there. Some of these insects, like mosquitoes, carry dangerous germs. These germs cause headaches, fever, and can even kill people.
Under Your Skin
Your skin protects you from germs. It stops some germs, but not all. They can enter your body when you eat, or when you have a cut. Germs are on your hands, too. They enter your body when you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Fighting Germs
Your immune system (免疫系统) protects you, too. When germs get inside your body, your immune system finds and kills them. Special cells (细胞) move around your body and fight germs. They help you stay healthy. Other cells make antibodies(抗体). Antibodies help your body find and stop germs.
______ You should wash your hands with soap and water. Soap kills many germs, and water washes them away.
