阅读理解We arrived at our new house in the city. I took my dog Max with me. Grandpa offered to keep Max on his farm, but I refused. Although I would visit Grandpa every weekend, I couldn't give up Max for five days a week! Dad and Mom started cleaning the new house right away, and I took a chain (链条), tied it to Max's collar (颈圈) and walked him to the yard. I felt sorry as he looked at me with sad eyes. He wanted to run freely. At last Friday came, and we packed to go to the farm. "Let's walk Max to the car," Mom said, tying the chain to his collar. As soon as Mom opened the door, Max ran away. Mom and I jumped into the car and caught up to him, who was running beside the road with his tongue sticking out. Then he rushed into the road. A coming car came to a sudden stop. Mom shouted "Sorry" to the driver. We ran after Max all the way to the park before he was ready to get in the car. Finally, we got back to Grandpa's farm. Returning to this old place, Max seemed to be back to his happy days. He ran across the field, leaving the vegetables in a mess. He barked at the chickens and scared them to fly in every direction and ran after the birds. "He loves the life on the farm, doesn't he?" laughed Grandpa. I pretended (假装) not to hear it. When we got ready to leave on Sunday, Max's eyes no longer shone. As we walked him to our car, he tried to run away. This time, I held the chain tightly (紧紧地). However, my heart tightened at his sad sounds-he was begging! ____▲____. As I watched Max run to the farm, I couldn't help crying. Mom said, "Dear, this is what love is all about."

阅读理解①On Sept 7, 2023. famous Chinese archaeologist (考古学家) Fan Jinshi, 85, was awarded by UNESCO(联合国教科文组织) for her protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. ②Called the "daughter of Dunhuang", her story with the caves started in 1963. At that time, Fan finished her studies in Peking University and had the chance to work at the Mogao Caves. ③"Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was very exciting. But only when truly staying here did I realize that inside the caves is a world of divine (神圣的) beauty while outside is a land of blowing sand and yellow earth," Fan told Gansu Daily. ④Back in those days, it wasn't easy to work in Dunhuang. Fan and her coworkers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They stayed inside the caves to do research, copy murals (壁画), and do whatever they could to protect them. ⑤As time passed, Fan found a serious problem. The increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm (伤害) the caves. A solution needed to be found. ⑥In the late 1980s, Fan discovered computer technology by chance. She realized that this might preserve the Mogao Caves forever. After over 30 years, the Dunhuang Academy built a digital database (电子数据库) to protect cultural relics there, allowing Dunhuang's art to live forever and people to visit the Mogao Caves online. ⑦"In my whole life, I've only done one thing: protect the world cultural treasure of the Mogao Caves,"she told People's Daily. "My heart belongs to Dunhuang."

阅读理解①Why do we do the things we do? What drives our behavior? Researchers have suggested different ways of thinking about motivation (动机), including looking at whether motivation comes from outside or inside a person. ②Extrinsic (外来的) motivation is when you decide to do something because you want to get a reward or avoid punishment. Intrinsic (内在的) motivation is when you do something because you find it enjoyable. The behavior itself is its own reward. ③There are many advantages of intrinsic motivation. Firstly, it's lasting. It makes people willing to face challenges and work hard to achieve their goals. Besides, people with intrinsic motivation have a greater sense of satisfaction. ④Most people think intrinsic motivation is best, but it is not always possible in every situation. Sometimes a person has an unpleasant task and he may not have internal (内部的) wish to complete it. That's when we need extrinsic motivation. But studies have shown that offering too-many external (外部的) rewards can reduce (减少) intrinsic motivation. For example, in a study, children were playing with the toys they liked. When they were externally rewarded for their behavior, they became less interested in the toys. ⑤Both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation play a key role in learning. Experts have argued that traditional education pays too much attention to external rewards, such as grades. This undermines the intrinsic motivation that students might already have. However, others have suggested that extrinsic motivation can help students feel more knowledgeable in class. It helps to build up their intrinsic motivation. ⑥Understanding how each type of motivation works and when it is likely to be useful can help people complete tasks and improve their learning.
