Every month, Julia and her cousins would go for the big family meal at their grandparents' house. They would always wait excitedly for the moment their grandfather would give them a few coins. Then all the children would buy sweets. The grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents realized that, behaving like this, the children would never learn to manage their money. So they proposed a special test, the children would have to show what they could manage to get with those few coins over the course of a year. Some of the children thought that they would save their money, but Ruben and Nico, the two smallest kids, paid no attention, and they continued spending it all on sweets. Every time, they would show off their sweets in front of the other children, laughing and making fun of their cousins. They made Clara and Joe so angry that these two could no longer stand to keep saving their money. They joined Ruben and Nico in spending whatever they had on sweets. Monty was a clever boy, and he decided to start managing his money by exchanging it: buying and selling things, or betting it with other children in card games. Soon he had surprised the whole family. He had saved a lot of money for little hard work. The way he was going, he would end up almost a rich man. However, Monty was not being very careful, and he hadn't a single coin left, after putting a losing bet on a horse race. Poor Julia had a wonderful secret plan. When she was to complete the second year of her plan, Julia surprised everyone with a violin and a lot of money. They were hearing her play. She did it really well. Everyone knew that Julia loved the violin, even though the family couldn't afford to pay for her to have lessons. So Julia had got to know a poor violinist who played in the park, and she offered him all the coins her grandfather had given her if he taught her how to play. Although it wasn't much money, on seeing Julia's excitement, the violinist agreed, and he taught her happily for months. Julia showed so much interest that after a year, the violinist lent her a violin, so they could play together in the park. They were so successful that gradually she got her own violin. From then on, the whole family helped her, and she became a very famous violinist. And she would always tell people how it was possible, with just a few coins well spent, to make your wildest dreams a reality.

Nothing in Wiley Post's early years showed that he would become a famous pilot one day. His family were farmers. In 1913, Wiley saw something that forever changed his life—an airplane. Wiley Post began to study everything he could find about flying. Post finally rode in an airplane in 1919. After his first ride, Wiley Post knew that flying was something he could learn to do. Wiley Post began his career in flying, not as a pilot, but as a performer who jumps from airplanes using a parachute. He did this with a group that performed flying tricks to earn money. Wiley Post then decided the only way to become a good pilot was to buy an airplane of his own. He needed more money than be earned in the flying show. He went to work in the oil-producing areas of Texas. But he damaged his left eye in an accident. Doctors had to get rid of his eye. Judging distance is difficult without two eyes. Wiley Post began teaching himself to judge distance with only one eye. It took a long time, but he succeeded. In 1928, he got a job flying the plane that belonged to a rich oil producer from Oklahoma called F.C. Hall. In 1930, Post entered the National Air Races in this plane and won. On June 23. 1931, Wiley Post and Gatty had flown around the world. But many people said Gatty was the real hero. He had guided the flight. This hurt Post. Wiley Post began to plan another flight around the world. This time he would go alone. On July 15, 1933, Post took off from Floyd Bennett Field in New York. He became the first person to fly from New York to Berlin without stopping. He had flown around the world in eighteen hours and forty-nine minutes.

It's no secret that laughter works wonders for us. And much research has been carried out, which shows that laughter is good for our general health and well-being. It has been found to release endorphins (释放安多芬), our bodies' natural "feel-good" chemicals, into our blood. But as we grow older, we are more likely to find fewer things funny. A child will laugh on average 300 times a day. By the time we reach adulthood, his number is around 20. But what's behind this? One theory suggests that it's not a problem of losing our sense of humor but rather, as we grow older, we take things a bit more seriously. Laughter is very much something we do with others. Studies have shown that we are 30 times more likely to find something funny when we are with others than when we are by ourselves. But to laugh with others, we do need to feel a connection to them. We need to feel comfortable in their company. That's why it can be difficult to laugh with strangers. Laughter is also very contagious and one person's laugh can spread quickly through out a group of people. But often what makes us join in is the fear of standing out and being different. We laugh, even if we don't' really get the joke, specially in groups controlled by a powerful person. When the head teacher ells a joke, for example, you laugh, even though later you might wonder if the joke was really that funny at all. There are many different reasons why we laugh. Here are three widely accepted theories: The Incongruity Theory: It's often the unexpected that makes us laugh. When things that we are familiar with suddenly take a turn into the unknown, our expectations are challenged and that often results in laughter. The Superiority Theory: We often find the mistakes and misfortunes of others funny. This would explain the popularity of online videos showing pranks (恶作剧). The Relief Theory: Laugh offers light relief. It explains why there are so many jokes about the darker things in life. By being able to laugh at them, we are able to face them more easily.

The Spring Festival was supposed to be a time for family gathering. One of the main reasons that the novel coronavirus has been spreading so quickly is that it's transmitted through droplets (飞沫) coughed and sneezed by infected people. These droplets can travel as far as two meters in the air. And even after the droplets fall and land on surfaces, they can stay alive for up to five days. This means everything you touch in a public place might be giving you this deadly virus. In a new development, it seems possible that the virus can be transmitted through aerosol (气溶胶), which is a suspension (悬浮) in the air (or in gas) of fine solid particle (微粒) or liquid droplets. However, no further evidence has been found to support this statement. Avoiding people and public spaces is not how we planned to spend this festival season. Firstly, we've developed better habits, including washing our hands thoroughly after coming home. We've also learned to value the simple happiness - being able to take a walk, going to a restaurant or hanging out with friends. Try thinking about all the things you'll be free to do after this terrible virus is defeated. A. This makes it dangerous to get too close to people. B. But perhaps we can look on the bright side. C. Even so, it's one more reason for you to stay home. D. Then you'll find the idea of staying at home for now is not so unbearable (无法忍受的). E. But that tradition came to a stop this year because of an epidemic outbreak. |
