One day, Allan and his friend Henry went swimming in a river. It was very hot. How happy they were in the river! After they got out of the water, they played games in the sun for a while.
On their way back, Henry saw some flowers. He liked flowers very much and ran into the green field to look at them. Now Allan was walking by himself.
Then he heard Henry calling out, "A snake! Help! ..."
"What's wrong with you?" asked Allan.
"A snake bit(咬)me in the leg. Come here!"
Allan ran over and saw a small red wound(伤口)on Henry' s leg.
"The snake was in the grass. I didn't see it."
"Sit down quickly"! Allan told Henry.
Allan put his mouth at the little red wound and began to suck(吸)at it. In this way he saved Henry's life. "Oh, Allan, it's very kind of you to help me."
"That's all right. We are friends and we must always help each other."
—Yes, it was so funny!
It was last January, when I'd just finished a charity(慈善)and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.
When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-yous and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year?
To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity.
February would be neighbors, I decided. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened and offered to play his favorite songs; our babysitter, who dropped off a bag of old board games for our kids to play;….
While wring the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone moving from app to app, appreciating(欣赏)other people's lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me the time to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers and parenting role models. In July, my "food" month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:
Dear. Julie,
I've been finding myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food. Jake and I will never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary (周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.
Thank you. We miss you.
Love,
Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, "I don't think I've ever received such a touching letter before. I'm going through a hard time right now, and this helps. "
On December 31, I wrote my last card—to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me. Gratitude.
Dear Sir or Madam.
One of the teachers at my school in New York tells me that your school has summer course. I am planning to go to Beijing next summer and would like to take a short one-month course.
I am 18 years old and have been studying Chinese for six years. I was born in the USA and have never been to China before. I am going to study Chinese at the university. I think the course will help me improve my Chinese.
Could you send me a catalogue(目录) and application form (申请表)? I would also like information about Beijing and other places nearby. I hope to do some travelling when the course is over.
Thank you! I am looking forward to your reply
Very truly yours,
Jim Green
Henry is going through a very hard time. His wife has just passed away. He feels that life without her is meaningless. For months, Henry sits in his house, doing nothing. His family try to encourage him to do new things and enjoy life, but they're not successful.
Henry's neighbor, an old woman named Lisa, sees him from her yard one day. She has not seen him outside for days! She asks him to come closer to the fence(篱笆) next to her house.
"Hello, Henry'! Just look at this fence. It is falling apart. You are a strong man. Can you help me fix this fence?"' Lisa asks.
Henry is angry. He is the one who needs help right now. He thinks the old lady is kind of rude. But she is too old to fix the fence herself, so he agrees.
Henry works on the fence for days. Lisa brings him orange while he is working. When he finishes, she thanks him. Henry smiles for the first time in months.
"What a wonderful job! Could you please paint it for me?" Lisa says to him.
Henry cannot believe she is asking for more help. Doesn't she know how sad he is? But because he respects(尊重) her, he agrees. He works hard painting the fence in the hot sun, but Lisa's orange and encouragement are helpful. As their neighbors pass by, they all tell Henry what a beautiful job he has done. Henry feels very happy.
Henry no longer feels that life is meaningless. He finally realizes that Lisa wasn't rude. She knows that staying busy can help him forget his sadness. He helped her, but she truly saved him.
