Being a parent is without doubt among the most challenging jobs in the world. But no matter how 1 it is, some people voluntarily (主动地) take this role—even if they don’t have to. We know them as “foster (收养) parents”.

Over the next three years, this 4 mom fostered 16 children. They were all under five years old because she wasn’t willing to take teenagers. However, her attitude changed when she met a teenage girl named Akyra.
Akyra’s foster family needed a break. Katie was asked to let Akyra 5 with her for a week. To Katie’s surprise, she and Akyra got on well. They had the same 6 such as watching movies and reading novels. As time went on, the pair grew 7 . Katie made up her mind to foster her for real. Mary was in bed, feeling sleepy. She read the first few words of her book, “The dodo( 渡渡鸟 ) was a bird that couldn’t fly...”, and soon she fell fast asleep.
Whoosh! The window flew wide open. Mary sat up, and through the window she saw a dodo, an unusual dodo, right there in her yard!
“I lived over four hundred years ago,” the dodo said. “But then terrible things happened. People cut down the forests, so we had nothing to eat. We all died.” The dodo felt sad.
Suddenly, a mammoth ( 猛犸 ) rushed in. It said, “I’ve been looking for you, Dodo! I lived thousands of years ago, but not now.” It added, “Scientists think the weather changed, changing the environment where we lived. We ate grass, but as the weather grew warmer, forests spread and there was less grass to eat.”
Seconds later, an elephant bird came. It said proudly, “I’m the heaviest bird that’s ever lived. I weigh half a ton. But we lived on earth over a thousand years ago.”
The animals all looked sad. Before they had time to say another word, a tiger came in. “My friends,” said, showing its big teeth. “I hear what you are talking about. We tigers are lucky. Now there are some special places for us animals who are in danger. We are safe and no one can hurt us there.
“Sounds great!” thought Mary. “Animals should have more of this kind of places!”
The window blew shut, and Mary woke up with a start. There was no one and nothing to see, except the book in her hand.

In a digital age, we almost never write things by hand. However, many studies have shown that this act has many benefits (益处) .
New brain research, led by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, announces the same: choosing handwriting over using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
“When you write your shopping list or notes by hand, you simply remember things better after some time,” said Audrey van der Meer, author of the study.
The study was done using equipment to track and record brain wave activity. 12 young adults and 12 children took part in the study. Each person was asked to write by hand and type on a keyboard while wearing a hood (风帽) with over 250 electrodes (电极) . The sensors (传感器) in the electrodes are very sensitive and catch the electrical activity that takes place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes per person.
The results show that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses are activated by pressing a pen on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These sense experiences build connections between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the results show the importance of children’s learning to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it’s important for children to go through the tiring process of learning to write by hand,” she said.
The hand movements are good for us in many ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your skills and senses. It is important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible,” Van der Meer added. “You might use a keyboard to write an article, but you should learn by hand during a class.”
