Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be "green gyms". They are better replacements(代替物)for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.
I had a good day today. It 1 with a morning walk with my dogs under the moonlight before daybreak. It was so beautiful. After the 2 it was time for a warm breakfast 3 by some exercise and prayer. Then I 4 to the office. The warm sunlight made me 5and since I was alone with nobody else to be disturbed(打扰), I 6along with the CD playing in my car with a loud voice and a happy heart.
My good day was just beginning, 7. I helped it along by giving cheerful 8to everyone I met. I shared smiles and was happy to have them9. I offered a helping hand to one friend and a pat on the back to another. Later at the store I 10the door for a lady with her arms full of packages. I told a 11cashier(收银员)what a good job she was doing and watched her whole face 12.
When I got home I gave my daughter a hug, kissed my oldest son on the head, and 13with my youngest son before doing some work on the computer. Then I answered letters 14to share a loving thought or two with my friends around the world. Later in the evening I spent some 15time reading a good book, petting my dogs on the head. 16I ended the day the way I started it: walking my dogs 17, and thanking God for this world, my life, and the 18 to live for one more good day.
Perhaps the key to having a great life is to live it one good day 19 . Perhaps the key to being 20 in this world is to love all we have today and let God take care of our tomorrow.
As I stood in a stall (货摊) of Beijing's Silk Market, waiting to exchange a silk garment (服装), I watched in amazement as the young vendor (小贩) pulled out silk nightgown after nightgown for a foreigner, who sounded like an American, but frankly could have been from any English-speaking Western country.
The man appeared satisfied when she pulled out a bright, purple nightgown and said, "This one, very good. "and probably asked how much it cost, for the owner pulled out her calculator showing 800. My heart was pounding heavily. After all, I was holding a similar gown in my hand for which I had paid all of 60 yuan ($9. 39) just the previous day. I wanted to scream and say, "Wait, you are being taken for a ride". But I just kept silent.
As I moved away from the stall a thousand thoughts flashed in my mind. Should I have just stepped in and stopped it? I may have saved the man but could have brought danger to myself. Maybe I could have pretended to seek help with some English from that man and warned him not to be cheated?
When I told the incident to some of my friends, most seemed to think it was unfortunate but one couldn't fault the vendor. Everyone visiting China knows, or ought to know, that bargaining is a way of life here, they said.
Although I do agree that the man should have been better informed, it just doesn't seem right that the place, to which tourists from all over the world are brought and made to believe is a Mecca (向往的地方) for shopping in Beijing, should be allowed to get away with such daylight robbery.
I still think I should have done something about what I witnessed.
As a young social worker in a New York City psychiatric clinic, I was asked to see Roz, a 20-year-old woman who had been referred to us from another psychiatric clinic. It was an 36 referral in that no information was received 37 her first appointment. I was told to “play it by ear”, and to 38 what her problems were and what she needed.
39 an examination to go on, I saw Roz as an unhappy, misunderstood young woman who hadn’t been listened to in her earlier treatment. Her family situation was unpleasant. I didn’t see her as disturbed, 40 rather as lonely and misunderstood. She responded so 41 to being heard. I encouraged her to start a life worth living — to find a job, a satisfying place to live and new relationships. We hit it off well, and she 42 making important changes in her life.
The records from the previous psychiatric clinic arrived a month after Roz and I began our successful work together. To my complete surprise, her records were several inches thick, 43 a long period of psychiastric hospitalization. Her diagnosis was “paranoid schizophrenic(妄想型精神分裂症)”, with a 44 that she was “hopeless”.
That had not been my experience with Roz at all so I decided to forget those pieces of paper. I never treated her as if she had that “hopeless” treatment. I did find out about the horrors for Roz of the hospitalization, of being drugged, separated and abused. I also learned a lot from her about 45 such deeply and unforgettably shocking circumstances.
First Roz found a job, then a place to live away from her difficult 46 . After several months of working together, she introduced me to her husband-to-be, a successful businessman who adored her.
When we 47 our treatment, Roz gave me the gift of a silver bookmark and a note that said, “Thank you for believing and encouraging me.”

Encouragement, what is a kind of power, is very important.
Failing my English exam once got me casting down. My teacher encouraged me not to lose hearts. He said it was no big deal to fail a exam and what mattered was to figure out the reasons instead of feeling sorry for me. I looked into my English paper and realized that the reason why I failed was because I had two weeks’ sick leave. So I made up for the lessons I have missed and my efforts was paid off in the following exams.
Encouragement is great benefit to me and I’ll give it to those who are in need of it.
