In the United States of America, the legal voting(选举) age is 18 years. Though some Americans have expressed interest in raising the voting age, saying that these important decisions should not be left in the hands of a teenager, I disagree. I believe that those who are 18 years are ready to take on the responsibility(责任)for voting.
We all know that in the United States, 18 is the age when an individual is considered an adult by the government. Being an adult in the eyes of the law is quite different than simply being a juvenile. Punishments for illegal activities become much heavier. Additionally, at 18, an individual can join the army without receiving permission from his parents to do so. So, when a citizen turns 18, the politics of the country start affecting him in a completely different way. It is unfair to let one lead a severer lifestyle and not allow him any choice in the matter.
Furthermore, by allowing a teenager to vote, we are helping to ensure that he will become more politically minded at a younger age. I didn’t care at all about the politics of my country when I couldn’t vote. As I couldn’t do anything about the politics at the time, I couldn’t see why I should care. It wasn’t until I turned 18 years of age that I started actively trying to understand who ran my government and the way in which it was governed. By allowing 18-year-olds to vote, we are getting them engaged in the world of politics much sooner.
In addition, teenagers today are much smarter than we think. Today’s society is much more technologically advanced than it was in the past. Teenagers have access to all kinds of information through the Internet and their smartphones. So, teenagers have enough knowledge to make good decisions.
Therefore, I think 18 is indeed a proper age to make important political decisions and those who are 18 should be allowed to make important decisions that will affect their nation.

Martin was returning to work in his London office after spending two weeks with his brother in New York.He was coming back with a heavy heart. It was not just that it was the end of a wonderful holiday; it was not just that he invariably suffered badly from jet lag (时差) ; it was that Monday mornings always began with a team meeting and, over the months, he had grown to hate them.
Martin was aware that colleagues approached these meetings with hidden matters; they enjoyed game-playing; and he knew that people were not being honest and open. The meetings themselves were bad enough-there were all the complaints afterwards at the meeting like “I could have improved on that idea, but I wasn't going to say". “They usual people saying the usual things.” “I was thinking of making a suggestion—but I couldn’t be bothered.”
As this morning's meeting began, Martin prepared himself for the usual dullness and boredom. But, as the meeting progressed, he became aware of a strange background noise. At first, he thought that he was still hearing the engine noise from the aircraft that had brought him back to London. He had had to sit over the wing and the engine noise was terrible. But, as he concentrated on the noise, it became a little clearer.
He realized-to his amazement-that he could actually hear what they were thinking at the same time as they were speaking. As he concentrated still harder, he found that he could actually hear what they were thinking at the same time as they were speaking. What surprised him, even more than the acquisition(获得)of this strange power, was that he discovered that what people were saying was not really what they were thinking. They were not making clear their reservations(保留意见).They were not supporting views which they thought might be unpopular. They were not contributing their new insights. They were not volunteering their new ideas.
Martin found it impossible not to respond to his new knowledge. So he started to make gentle interventions(干涉),based more on what he could hear his colleagues thinking than on what he could hear them saying. “So, John are you really saying…” “Susan, do you really think that?” “Tom, have you got an idea on how we could take this forward?” They was aware that his colleagues were unsettled (不安的) by how insightful these interventions were.
Encouraged now, Martin forgot his usual discomfort at participating in such meetings and began making comments of his own. However, he became aware that some of his colleagues were looking at him surprisedly. One or two even had a gentle smile playing on their lips. Only gradually did it dawn on him –they could hear his thoughts and he was not really saying what he was thinking.
They looked at him, puzzled. In truth, he felt rather proud of his newly-acquired talent.
As the meeting progressed, Martin became aware of changes to the tone and style of the event. It was clear to him that each member of the meeting was learning how to hear the thoughts of the others and this was slowly changing how they interacted with one another. The game-playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting.
The meeting ended. As people left the room, Martin found that he could still hear what they were thinking."That was the best meeting we've ever had." "All meetings should be like that." "In future, I'm going to say what I think" .

My aunt died back in about 2003. She was eight-four and so was my uncle. When she passed he felt miserable. They had been married for over 60 years. After my aunt’s death, he attended his church more frequently and his morning was nearly unbearable to witness. His only daughter lived across the country in the south so he had only himself to make a comfort.
My cousin talked him into selling the house that he and my aunt had built together about twenty five years before. It was very hard to part with the home they built together. One day he called my cousin who was living in Texas and told her that he reconnected with a lady from a church that he and my aunt went to forty years previously. She played piano and his church was looking for new music. Her husband had died about seven years previously. He said he just wanted someone to go out to dinner with and spend time with. We were happy for them but had no idea how it would turn out. They were both almost eighty-seven years old.
They were like lovebirds and spent as much time together as they could. They both had one child each, she a son, he a daughter.
The clash in their relationship came one day when they neither wanted to leave their respective churches. Before too long they realized that they did not want to be apart. They would find a new church together. They planned to marry. When he took her to a jewelry store and bought her a diamond, the employees were so impressed that they had a big write up in our own local paper, "The ‘Truth for Valentines' Day. They prepared for their wedding. They moved the wedding date up because neither wanted to wait any longer to "be together" .
They got married in her house, where her first marriage took place. It was such a beautiful refreshing thing to see, two people who you would have thought had pretty much lived their lives, were beginning a new one together.

The Sahara Festival is a celebration of the very recent past. The three-day event is not fixed (固定的)to the same dates each year, but generally takes place in November or December. It is well attended by tourists, but even better attended by locals (当地人).
During the opening ceremonies, after the official greetings from the government leaders, people who attend the festival begin to march smartly before the viewing stands, and white camels transport their riders across the sands. Horsemen from different nations display their beautiful clothes and their fine horsemanship. One following another, groups of musicians and dancers from all over the Sahara take their turn to show off their wonderful traditional culture. Groups of men in blue and yellow play horns (喇叭)and beat drums (鼓)as they dance in different designs. On their knees in the sand, a group of women in long dark dresses dance with their hair: their long, dark, shiny hair is thrown back and forth in the wind to the rhythm of their dance.
The local and visiting Italian dogs are anxious to run after hares. The crowd is on its feet for the camel races. Camels and riders run far into the distance, and then return to the finish line in front of the cheering people.
Towards the evening, there comes the grand finale of the opening day, an extremely exciting horse race. All the riders run very fast on the horseback. Some riders hang off the side of their saddles (座垫).Some even ride upside down ― their legs and feet straight up in the air ― all at full speed. Others rush down the course together, men arm in arm, on different horses. On and on they go. So fast and so wonderful!

It is commonly believed that all over the world, boys and girls attend a mixed school, where they study together. But boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.
Always boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to(和…相符) the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man".
Surprisingly, the findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.
George Carl, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls.
The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when girls do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can adjust lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with "boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around. "Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的) and prefer the modern genre (类型) in which violence and sexism are major themes," James wrote.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be "masterful and in charge" in relationships. "In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported.
28. The writer argues that a single-sex school would __________.

The Spring Festival, as one of the grandest and most important festivals, is supposed to be a time for the whole families to reunite together. However, as people’s enthusiasm for digital hongbao increased, the amount of the time they spend with family members during the holiday decreases. There has been widespread criticism(批评) over digital hongbao that it has given rise to a wide berth to family reunion.
“ I used to discuss programs in the Spring Festival Gala(春晚) with my family members , but this year , I hardly had the time to watch the gala because I was staring at my cellphone all the time,” said Kang , a 30 –year old radio station editor. “ I went to Karaoke with my cousins during the holiday, and I was grasping digital hongbao the whole time, even when I was singing Karaoke.”
“On the last day of the holiday, I started to regret spending too much time on these digital hongbao. Therefore, instead of fighting for hongbao, I watched TV with my mom that night. I left home feeling sorry! I should have spent more time with my parents.”
But Kang said regret came with a sense of achievement when he managed to bring classmates together.
“Next year, I will still play the game, but with less money and for a smaller amount of time,” Kang said.
Dong Chenyu, a teacher from Beijing Foreign Studies University, said it unfair to blame hongbao for destroying family reunion.
“When television was invented, people accused it of standing in the way of face-to-face human communication. The same accusation came up on telephone and text message services when they were first invented. The same goes with digital hongbao,” Dong said.
“It does nothing but offers a new way of human communication. The rest is people’s choice. As long as no one expects to earn money from this and takes this as a means of gambling(赌博), it’s a good way to improve human connections,” Dong said.

All police officers should be made to take a fitness test every year, with a pay cut for those who repeatedly fail,a review said.
In the Metropolitan Police, more than half(52 percent)of its men officers are overweight,a fifth (22 percent) are obese, and one in 100 are“morbidly(病态地)obese".For women officers in the Met,a third(32 percent) are overweight,16 percent are obese and 2 percent are morbidly obese.
Tom Winsor, who has carried out the widest-ranging research of police pay and conditions in more than 30 years, said those who fail the test three times should face a pay cut.Chief constables(郡警察局局长)should be able to fire any officer as part of budget cuts, ending a job for life. It also recommended that applicants should be able to enter the police service directly at inspector rank, and,"after strict testing",at superintendent(主管)rank.
Mr Winsor said:“I think the public will be surprised that after passing a fitness test when they join the police, physical fitness is not tested again in a 30,35-year career."
An initial(最初的)yearly test requiring officers to reach level 5’4 on the bleep test should be brought in by September next year. This is equal to an average speed of 8. 8kph(5.5mph) for three minutes 35 seconds,he said. But this should get tougher by September 2018,along similar lines to the test currently used in Northern Ireland. This includes climbing over walls and pulling bodies and was designed to reflect situations which“police officers do and can become involved in".
Mr Winsor expected that many officers would welcome the proposals, saying they would see it“as a necessary protection for themselves and the public".
