高三英语试题

It’s high time someone spoke up for today’s college students. They’re probably the most hardworking, ambitious people in America and their problems are not properly appreciated.

People like the Secretary of Education simply don’t know what they’re talking about when they knock students. Nor do those who complain about falling academic standards.

The vast majority of the nation’s 12 million students are struggling to pay for their educations. They are part of the invisible workforce. Many hold down full-time jobs. They’re frying hamburgers, photographing weddings, working in construction, and waiting on tables. The fact that they even show up for classes is a wonderful event.

The financial situation of most students explains a lot about what is happening in schools.  Why are the traditional courses so unpopular? Why are students flocking to accounting and computer science and any professional programs that seem to lead to careers?

Answer: Today’s working student has been forced into a kind of premature matter-of-fact way of viewing things. Romance is gone. The notion of transforming one’s self through study alone has disappeared. Today’s students seek freedom from manual labor, and the status conferred by a good job.

There are other consequences. Today’s students don’t have much time or energy to be devoted, and carry out independent research or even do serious homework. That’s the secret behind falling academic standards. Students have become consumers. They want grades and certifications.  Their professors can’t be expected to give a grade of failure to students who are clearly tired from the effort to pay their bills.

There’s a lot wrong with this situation. It’s twisting the definition of education out of shape.  Worse, it’s creating a generation that is totally unpleasant. The brightest students turn out to be yuppies (雅皮士). The vast majority are, at least, good-natured semi-literates.

The time has run out for philosophical debates about fixed courses of study. What this country needs is someone to stand up and say that being a full-time student during one’s formative years is an honorable calling worthy of support. If families can’t or won’t give it to their children, then the government should.

Nature is full of color, from rainbows and roses to butterfly wings and peacock tails. Even the fruits and vegetables you eat have different colors: blue blueberries, red strawberries, green broccoli, and orange carrots.

Plant and animals often use color to attract attention. The substances responsible for these colors belong to a class of chemical called antioxidants(抗氧化物). Plants make antioxidant to protect themselves from the sun's ultraviolet(紫外线)light.

Ultraviolet light causes chemicals called free radicals(自由基)to form within plant cells. They can destroy parts of plant. Free radicals also have damaging effects on human beings. Some of these effects like wrinkled skin can be seen. The damage is caused by the free radicals attacking cells in our bodies. Certain cancers and heart disease are linked to free radicals.

Our bodies have natural defences for fighting off free radicals. While we are young, our defences are pretty strong. However, they get weaker as we get older. The body’s built-in defences can only go so far without extra help.

The key to fighting free radicals with fruits and vegetables is to mix and match colors. It’s like sunscreen(防晒霜)for the inside of your body. Go for a range of very bright colors. Colorful foods contain hundreds of healthy chemicals not found anywhere else.

Research into how chemicals in blueberries affect the brain's function in rats suggests that these chemicals may help our own brains work more efficiently.

Don't just blame the sun. Ultraviolet light isn't the only source of free radicals. If you breathe polluted air such as smog, automobile exhaust(废气), or wasted gas from a factory, you take in chemicals that also cause such damage. And, the body itself produces free radicals as it processes food.

29. Which of the following NOT true?

AAntioxidants are responsible for plant colors.

BPlants use color to attract attention.

CAntioxidants help free radicals to attack plants.

DAntioxidants can protect plants from ultraviolet light.

31. We need extra help for fighting off free radicals from fruits and vegetables because ____.

Aour defences get weaker as we get older

Bour bodies’ defences are not natural

Cwe are too young to defend ourselves

Dour bodies’ built-in defences can only go away

32. Which of the following can NOT cause free radicals to form?

At presentI am extreme happy because I am doing what I like. As senior three student, I study hard every day and live it to the full. It feels like good to study hard with my determining classmates to fulfill our dreams. When I recalled the happy things that happened to me, the experience of my receiving the scholarship in middle school topped it all. It was a time that my family was going through financial difficulties. So I make up my mind to win the scholarship, hoped to lighten up my parents’ financial burdens. After making tons of painstaking effort, I succeeded. At the ceremony, my mom was the most poorly-dressed woman, and with the brightest smile on her face.

Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars and trucks with gas.  16

18 . That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.

Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else.  19 . Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.

To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help the air clean. But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down.  20 .

Some people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them. Take my family’s last vacation. It was my six-year-old son’s winter break form school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day. I had meetings in New YorkSo I had to get back. But that didn't mean my husband and my son couldn't stay. I took my nine-month-old and took off for home.

The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged—okay, ordered—them to wait it out at the airport, to "earn" more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600. Not bad, huh?

Now some people may think I'm a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big-time bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal is something few of us can afford to pass up.

I've made living looking for the best deals and exposing (揭露) the worst tricks. I have been the consumer reporter of NBC's Today show for over a decade. I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.

I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money’s worth. I’m also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn't hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape longer, and it's the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.

One day I walked to my favorite cafe for lunch. I ordered a burger and iced tea and went to the outdoor area. While waiting for my meal, a homeless man on a bicycle stopped to ask if there was a grocery store in the neighborhood. After I gave him directions, he asked if I had graduated from Sana Clara University. (I was wearing a SCU T-shirt.) I told him, yes. Little did I know that this simple response would lead to a 90-minute conversation.

The man, Michael, told me he was 50 years old. He was intelligent. Unfortunately, drug abuse had ruined both his formal education and his pursuit of success in the world of work. He drifted from one topic to another, ignoring the fact that my lunch had been brought to me. He clearly had more of a need to talk than I did. I made every effort to give him my full attention, never expecting that our conversation would go on and on ...

Eventually, I did eat my meal, bite by bite between responses in our conversation. Michael was a bit strange in terms of his interests and viewpoints. We had little in common, but he was fascinated with talking with, as he put it, “intelligent people”. I have to admit, I wish our conversation had been limited to ten or fifteen minutes, but when Michael finally rode off on his bike, he thanked me for listening so attentively to him and for my willingness to talk with him for so long. It was then that I realized that, just maybe, that was my purpose in life for today --- to be there, in that place, at that time, to carry on that conversation. On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life.

   B. He was dying for communication.

   C. He was curious about everything.

   D. He suffered from a serious disease.

23. Which word can best describe the author?

   A. Considerate.

B. Impatient.

   C. Intelligent.

D. Strange.

Skin-to-skin Effort Aims to Cut Newborn Deaths

A social media campaign has been launched in China to cut down the number of newborns babies who die in the first 24 hours of life. The campaign, called First Embrace(拥抱)promotes skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby immediately after birth, a practice proven to keep the baby warm and help it to fight infections.

There are 16 million babies born in China each year, and approximately 150,000 of them die before they reach one month of age.   71   Zhang Shuyi, a researcher at the Capital Institute of Pediatrics in Beijing, said there was strong evidence for the First Embrace approach.

“When babies are cold, they are more likely to catch infections or have difficulty breathing,” she said,”   72   It provides direct protection against infection, promotes bonding between the parent and child and supports breast-feeding.” Health workers who shifted from the normal practice of separation to skin-to-skin contact have observed that babies are more pink, calm and comfortable.

The WHO has developed the First Embrace approach to help reduce newborn deaths across the Western Pacific region, including China. Bernhard Schwartlander , the WHO Representative in China, said, “As many as two-thirds of newborn deaths could be prevented using simple, low-cost methods, including the First Embrace.”

73   The WHO will be posting information about the campaign, and hosting online question-and-answer sessions with Chinese and international experts. The public can participate by following the WHO on Weibo and joining the conversation.  Schwartlander said, “We are targeting new parents, pregnant women and couples thinking about having a baby.   74   ”

Just last month, a new research shows that child and mother health outcomes in Shanghai are equal to those in the USA and Canada.   75   Hopefully, the messages conveyed by the new campaign could help to bridge that gap.

A. The campaign has now been launched via Weibo.

B. Of that number, half die in the first 24 hours of life.

C. Skin-to-skin contact keeps a baby warm by transferring heat.

D. Those parents who lost their newborn babies can get supports on the platform.

E. In other parts of China, however, the statistics are like those of poor countries.

F. It indicates that related methods for health care and birth quality should be improved.

G. We also aim to involve health professionals in the importance of early essential newborn care.

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.

My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome and successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.

On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?

The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in doing so, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

There are certain steps you can take to relieve the damage done by some of the previously mentioned reading problems. 36 Be sure to use and practice them as you read.

Take breaks.

Remember tiredness can lead to all of the health problems and to other problems as well. If you do not rest your mind, you will likely get tired and it will cost you points.

 37

You can mark your place either by pointing to each word as you read it, or by placing a sheet of paper underneath the line you are reading. Pointing to each word with a pencil or your finger helps your eyes see where they should be reading. Placing a piece of paper under the line helps you to move smoothly from one line to the next.

Read aloud.

38 If you must remain silent, whisper the words to yourself, or mouth the words, and say them in your head. It is important that you actually hear the sounds, even if you only hear them in your imagination. This multisensory approach allows you to see, hear, and feel what you are reading. Reading aloud should help you stay focused, understand better and remember what you are reading.

 39

If you are thinking about what is important enough to write down, you will pay more attention to the reading. 40 It will also help you process the main point of the passage and improve the possibility that you will remember things. In addition, the notes you take are a record of the passage that you can refer back to if you do forget elements.

A. Highlight text.

B. Take notes.

C. Trace your place.

D. This will keep your mind from wandering.

E. Notes about the entire passage should be written.

F. Just knowing about these techniques is not enough.

G. If you’re in your own room, you can say each word aloud.
