高三英语下学期下册试题

Arabic is written in the opposite direction to English, ______, from right to left.

A. that is                   B. which is             C. what is                    D. as it is

I received a call today asking if I would be willing to bring food to a family in need. The mother was having a major operation and would be lying down for several weeks. Of course, I responded with an immediate “Yes!”. As I planned the meal in my head, I reflected on how many times over the years I had been asked to prepare food. I have done so countless times with a very open heart.

But the truly amazing thing is that I have received double over the course of my life. When my mother passed away, our house was filled with fresh dinners for weeks. A woman from the church of our community stopped by each evening with some food. The gift of food was her small way of trying to ease our pain.

Later in my life, when I was on bed rest during my pregnancy with twins, women of the church again stepped in to help. They arranged babysitting for my two-year-old daughter, and brought lovely dinners to our house. Even when I was put in the hospital, my husband would bring cooked meals to my hospital room. How we relied on these dinners to feed my tired husband and young daughter.

Food is all about comfort. It feeds our bodies, but it can also feed our souls. When you hear people talking about their favourite holidays, it usually includes their feelings connected with sharing food. I know that I will have many more opportunities in my lifetime to prepare food for others. It is truly a gift I want to prepare and deliver to someone in need.

There are roughly 55 million single women in the US, many of them fashionable, sexy and smart, with their finger on the pulse of life. But when that certain finger is ringless, even the most self-confident finger fears the shame and blame of disappointed family during a visit home. The holidays are known to cause stress to scores of single women in the pains of “The Panic Years”, who call the annual visit-and-interrogation (审讯) the “Thanksgiving Third Degree”. Now some women have admitted to buying fake, cheap “engagement rings” just to prevent parents and other overly-critical family members from delivering ridicule and judgment over their single status.

It may sound like a slippery slope towards avoidance issues and other psychological problems, but if it quiets them long enough without you getting questioned about why your boyfriend of three years hasn’t proposed yet, it could be well worth the $30 investment. Sometimes it’s completely soul-pressing when you come home for the holidays empty-handed — literally (准确地) — watching your family members’ faces show disappointment that you’re back another year without any engagement ring.

Heather, a 31-year-old lawyer from New York, was well on her way to being both unhitched and unhinged (神经错乱), thanks to her mother’s persistent request about marriage. She feared that the constant blaming could destroy not just her own wise judgment, but threaten her long-time relationship with her boyfriend, Tony, who was regularly interrogated about his intentions from his would-be mother-in-law. Well aware that showing up without a ring for the holidays would ruin the mood of the entire weekend, she became very resourceful.

“I got a fake ring for $30 just to shut her up,” she said. “It actually worked and it turned into a really great visit!” Just three months later, Heather had a real ring to show off. Tony proposed on their own timetable on Valentine’s Day and her mother was never the wiser.

55. From the passage some single women buy fake rings _______.

B. to keep away from blame from parents

A. they can’t find suitable partners

B. they will be questioned for being single

C. their parents blame them for just not wearing rings

D. their parents aren’t satisfied with their casual attitude

57. What caused Heather to be resourceful?

      A. Getting help from her parents on weekends.

B. Thinking of how to make weekends meaningful.

C. Having many resources to enjoy the weekends.

D. Not wanting to spend stressful weekends home.

58. What can be implied from “ it turned into a really great visit”?

A. Heather wasn’t afraid of visiting her parents.

B. Heather found visiting her parents more enjoyable.

C. Heather managed to make her parents happy.

D. Heather wore a fake ring confirming her engagement.

Music died here last spring, or rather, it was killed by members of the school committee who ignored the importance of music as part of the high-school curriculum.

The committee decided that teaching students how to take a test is more important than a curriculum in which students can explore their interests in the arts as well as academics. Because the school system is running out of funding(资金), it needs to make sure that students pass the test or even more money will be lost. If students fail the state testit is not the fault of music classes — they are failing because the “academic” classes are not adequate.

It is painful to think of how many students will be discouraged from singing, acting, and playing instruments because school programs are no longer offered. Many families cannot afford private music lessons, and many potential musicians may not find their calling if they are not exposed to it in school. The fact that the school committee thinks the arts are not worth the investment(投资) will certainly make some students believe the arts are not worth their time or support and the cycle will continue.

Teaching for a test does not shape students into complete, well-rounded people. It blocks the natural sense to create and express feelings through art — there is more to life than the analytical(善于分析的) thinking that math and English provide. What happens after a test? Sure, a student might graduate, but they will have limited knowledge — certainly not a good preparation for the real world.

64. Music is not included in the high school curriculum mainly because           .

A. the school committee pays no attention to it     B. the students are not interested in it

C. the school is afraid of losing financial support    D. the state test is more important

65. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The number of the classes determines students’ performance in the test.

B. The school committee completely influences students’ attitude towards art.

C. Students can be musicians only if they can afford private music lessons.

D. Quite a few students are discouraged from learning music at school.

66. We can learn that music and art can          .

A. make students round-shaped people in future    B. motivate students in creativity and expression

C. provide students with analytical thinking       D. prevent students graduation from high school

67. The best title of the passage can be          .

A. Who on earth killed music?                  B. Can curriculum go without music?

C. Can we ignore the importance of music?        D. How to prepare for the real world?

How would you feel if the letter you penned carefully and posted to your favorite star ended up in the recycling bin? That's where unopened fan mail sent to singer Taylor Swift was found in Nashville.   36

Swift’s management said it was an accident, but dealing with piles of letters is a burden for most public figures. According to the BBC reporter Jon Kelly, at the height of his fame, Johnny Depp was said to receive up to 10,000 letters a week.   37

The dawn of the digital age in which public figures with a Twitter account can be messaged directly has made the process easier. The White House says it deals with 20,000 messages addressed to President Barack Obama each day.

Some celebrities don’t want letters. In 2008, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr said that he would throw them out because he was too busy.  38   Robert Pattinson, star of the Twilight films, claims that he reads tons and tons of letters from fans, which takes up almost all his free time.

Many artists, however, outsource (外包) the task of opening, reading and replying. Sylvia “Spanky” Taylor, 58, has run a service in California that does just that since 1987.   39    Most letters are simply declarations of affection and admiration, she says. A few ask for money. A small number contain threats which require her to contact the celebrity’s security team and law enforcement.

The biggest problem for Taylor is working out how to deal with the correspondence(通信). Presents such as soft toys are sent to local hospitals, and most of the letters just get shredded and recycled.

40    For some, this is enough, according to Lynn Zubernis, an expert at West Chester University. She says that the relationship between fan and celebrity may exist only in the mind of the former but it comes from a deeply-rooted human need for community.

A. Others do attempt to get through it themselves.

B. In fact, there is no alternative to deal with the problem.

C. How could he have enough time to skim through these letters one by one?

D. Typically, correspondence is acknowledged by a photo with a printed “signature”.

E. Accordingly, the correspondence problem has been difficult for the computer to automate.

F. She and her staff deal with up to 20,000 items of mail a month on behalf of 26 celebrities.

G. This incident has caused a wide public concern about how the public figures deal with the letters or mails from the fans.

Some phones had become part of our daily life. No matter who we are, we can see people busy play with their smart phones. Smart phones benefit them. They help us escape the pressure of life and get informations. However, if we spend too much time on them, we won’t have time to contact face to our friends and family. And our life, study and work will be hurt. In my view, we should limit to our using smart phones except for a purpose of learning. Meanwhile, it’s absolute necessary for us to take part in more outdoor activities.
