Our brains work in complex and strange waysThere are some people who can calculate the day of the week for any given date in 40,000 years, but who cannot add two plus twoOthers can perform complex classical piano pieces after hearing them once, but they cannot read or write

DrJLangdon Down first described this condition in 1887He called these people idiot savantsAn idiot savant is a person who has significant mental impairment (损伤), such as in autism or retardationAt the same time, the person also exhibits some extraordinary skills, which are unusual for most peopleThe skills of the savant may vary from being exceptionally gifted in music or in mathematics, or having a photographic memory

One of the first descriptions of a human who could calculate quickly was written in 1789 by DrBenjamin Rush, an American doctorHis patient, Thomas Fuller, was brought to Virginia as a slave in 1724It took Thomas only 90 seconds to work out that a man who has lived 70 years, 17 days, and 12 hours has lived 2,210,500,800 secondsDespite this ability, he died in 1790 without ever learning to read or write

Another idiot savant slave became famous as a pianist in the 1860sBlind Tom had a vocabulary of only 100 words, but he played 5 ,000 musical pieces beautifully

In the excellent movie Rain Man, made in 1988 and available on video cassette, Dustin Hoffman plays an idiot savant who amazes his brother played by Tom Cruise, with his ability to perform complex calculations very rapidly

Today we more clearly recognize that the idiot savant is special because of brain impairmentYet not all brain impairment leads to savant skillsSome studies have shown that people who have purposeful interruption of the left side of the brain can develop idiot savant skillsHowever few people wish to participate in such experimentsThere are many excellent reasons for not undergoing unnecessary experimentation on one's brainThe term idiot savant is outdated and inappropriateVirtually all savants have a high degree of intelligence and are thus not idiots

1What does the passage mainly talk about?

AIdiot savants have areas of outstanding abilities

BHuman Beings have complicated thinking process

CThe brains of the idiot savants are partly impaired

AHe can play wonderful pieces of classical music

BHe can guess out exactly the length of a man's life

CHe can memorize the contents of the pictures fast

DHe can count matches dropped on the floor quickly

3What can you infer from the passage?

AIdiot savants have real talents for art and math

BDrDown is the first person who found idiot savants

CFew people wish to risk becoming savants by brain operations

DIntentional left brain impairments will surely lead to idiot savants

4Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

15refer to paragraph 15.

In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition she won last year.

As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn't win the contest again? That's the strange thing about

being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.

A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, ―Don‘t you want to win again? ―No, she replied, ―I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly ―guided by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借用) my daughter‘s experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

41. What do we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Many senseless activities compete for children‘s time nowadays.

B. Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities today.

C. Rebecca benefits a lot from the online materials for her writing.

D. Rebecca is much too busy to enjoy her leisure time.

42. What did the writer say about her own writing experience?

A. She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.

B. Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.

C. There are pains as well as gains in her writing career.

D. She could no longer stand any pressure from writing.

43. Why did Rebecca want to enter this year‘s writing contest?

A. She believed she possessed real talent for writing.

B. She simply intended to share her story with readers.

C. She was sure of winning with her mother‘s help.

D. She had won a prize in the previous contest.

44. From the underlined part in Paragraph 4 we can infer that the writer ________________.

A. had unconsciously done too much while correcting her daughter‘s story

B. had already offered practical suggestions for her daughter‘s story

C. had nearly replaced her daughter to take part in the contest

D. had successfully turned her daughter into a young writer

45. What‘s the writer‘s advice for parents?

A. Parents should spare no effort to make their children successful writers.

B. Parents should keep an eye on the activities their children engage in.

C. Children should be given proper guidance to become more excellent.

D. Children should be allowed more freedom to grow through experience.

A few years ago,I felt like I was stuck in a rut(车辙),so I decided to follow in the footsteps of the great American philosopher,Morgan Spurlock, and try something new for 30 days. The idea is actually pretty simple.Think about something you’ve always wanted to add to your life and try it for the next 30 days.It turns out 30 days is just the right amount of time.

There’re a few things I learned while doing these 30-day challenges. The first was the time was much more memorable. This was part of a challenge I did to take a picture every day I also noticed that as I started to do more and harder 30-day challenges,my self-recognition grew.I went from a desk-dwelling computer nerd (电脑迷)to the kind of guy who bikes to work.

Even last year,I ended up hiking up Mt.Kilimanjaro.I would never have been that adventurous before I started my 30-day challenges.

I also figured out that if you really want something badly enough, you can do anything for 30 days.Have you ever wanted to write a novel?Tens of thousands of people try to write their won 50,000-word novel in 30 days.It turns out that all you have to do is write 1,667 words a day for a month. So I did.

So here’s my question to your: What are you waiting for?The next 30 days are going to pass whether you like it or not,so why not think about something you have always wanted to try and give it a shot!

We all know what a brain is.  A doctor will tell you that the brain is the organ of

the body in the head. It controls our body's functions, movements, emotions and

thoughts. But a brain can mean so much more.

A brain can also simply be a smart person,  If a person is called brainy, she is smart

and intelligent.  If a family has many children but one of them is super smart, you could say, "She's the brains in the family. " And if you are the brains behind something you

.are responsible for developing or organizing something.  For example, Bill Gates is the

brains behind Microsoft

Brain trust is a group of experts who give advice.  Word experts say the phrase

"brain trust" became popular when Franklin D. Roosevelt first ran for president in

1932,  Several professors gave him advice on social and political issues facing the U. S.

These professors were called his "brain trust. "

These ways we use the word "brain" all make sense. But other ways we use the

word are not so easy to understand.  For example, to understand the next brain

expression, you first need to know the word “drain." As a verb to drain means to,

remove something by letting it flow away. So a brain drain may sound like a disease

where the brain flows out the ears.  But, brain drain is when a country's most educated

people leave their countries to live in another.  The brains are, sort of, draining out of the

country.

However, if people are responsible for a great idea, you could say they brainstormed

it. Here, brainstorm is not an act of weather.  It is a process of thinking creatively about

a complex topic. For example, business leaders may use brainstorming to create new

products, and government leaders may brainstorm to solve problems.

If people are brainwashed, it does not mean their brains are nice and clean.  To

brainwash means to make someone accept new beliefs by using repeated pressure in a

forceful or tricky way. Keep in mind that brainwash is never used in a positive way.

25. According to the text, if you're the CEO of Bai Du you can be called

   A. the brains behind Bai Du

   B. Bai Du's brain trust

   C. the brain drain of Bai Du

   D. the organ of Bai Du

26. Why did Roosevelt successfully win the election?

   A. Because he was smart at giving advice.

    B. Because word experts were popular.

   C. Because he got his brain trust.

   D. Because he was the brains behind America.

27. Which of the following expression is always used in a negative way?

   A. Brain trust      B. Brain  drain        C. Brainstorm           D. Brainwash

With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to impose (强加,征税)on travelers every day, airfare isn’t getting any cheaper. Since you can’t drive to all your dream destinations, flying is the only way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.

Get the best fare. Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the best day to book a flight for less.

Fly during the least popular times. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.

Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.

Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Don’t wait until the last-minute to book. Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.

1. The passage is intended to _______.

A. inform us how to book a cheaper ticket

B. tell us how to choose the seat and time for a flight

C. persuade us into travelling by air

D. inform us of some best ways to save money on a flight

2. Which of the following statements is not true?

A. Airline travelers are supposed to pay more for the rising fuel costs

B. Early morning flight will help avoid some bumps and delays.

C. You can only book your seat online before or on your flight day.

D. Booking too early may cost you more money on your tickets.

3. Which is the best time to book the flight for October 2nd?

A. May 15th    B. August 15th

C. June 15th    D. September 15th

What do you know about the standard of living of a country? It actually means how much of the goods and services the country produces for an average person to share. 16 Obviously, the first factor is its ability to produce wealth. “Wealth” in this sense doesn’t refer to money. It’s because we don’t live on money but on things that money can buy, “goods” such as food and clothing, and “services” such as transport and entertainment.

There are various factors that determine a country’s ability to produce wealth. They affect one another. Wealth depends greatly on a country’s natural resources. 17 . Some regions of the world are rich in natural resources with a fertile soil and a favorable climate; other regions possess perhaps only one of them; some, unfortunately, possess none. The USA has everything listed above. 18 The Sahara Desert, on the other hand, is one of the least wealthy.

Also, the ability to put natural resources to use counts, which goes without saying.

19 As we see, old countries that have trained so many skilled workers over centimes are better at producing wealth than those whose workers are mainly unskilled.

Besides, with their wealth increasing, people have more for saving and can put their savings into factories and machines, which, in turn, will help workers to produce more goods.  20

A. That means wealth itself also produces wealth.

B. No wonder it is one of the wealthiest regions of the world.

C. Natural resources are equally distributed around the world.

D. And next comes the technical efficiency of a country’s people.

E. You may ask what factors contribute to a country’s standard of living

F. They include coal, oil, gas, gold, other minerals, water supply and so on.

G. But that doesn’t    make it a most wealthy country because it’s often hit by disasters.

 — I still haven’t made any progress in writing an English essay.

Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
