Thomas Hardy, probably the most searching and knowledgeable novelist of our time, was born on June 2, 1840, in Dorsetshire, England. He died on January 11, 1928. In his youth, Hardy read much and dreamt of becoming a poet, but he studied and practiced architecture as an assistant to a London architect, winning a prize for design. The fine descriptions of structure in his novels were probably somewhat due to his architectural training.
For five years he worked hard to practise writing poetry, but when he was twenty-seven, Hardy turned to fiction. His first story was accepted two years later, but upon the advice of George Meredith he decided not to publish it. His first novel, Desperate Remedies, appeared in 1871. During the next twenty-five years he published fourteen novels and two collections of short stories.
Under the Greenwood Tree (1872) he never surpassed(超越)in happy and delicate perfection of art. This and his next novel, A pair of Blue Eyes (1873), begin to show deep irony(讽刺) which is so obvious throughout Hardy’s writings.
Far from the madding Crowd (1874) was his first popular success. In it is shown Hardy’s amazing power of describing nature as symbolic background for his characters, an organic part of the action of his story. This was the earliest of what he called his novels of character and environment, which included The Return of the Native, Tess of D’Urbervilles, his masterpiece, and Jude the Obscure. Not until he was fifty-eight years old was his first collection of poems published, and he was sixty-four when the first part of The Dymats, surprised the literary world.
24. How did Thomas Hardy benefit from his architectural career?
A. He could practice writing while working.
B. He made a lot of money to support his writing.
C. He found material for his novels and poems.
D. He applied architectural knowledge in his novels.
25. What is Thomas Hardy’s Under the Greenwood Tree considered to be?

A. Desperate Remedies. B. A pair of Blue Eyes.
C. Tess of D’Urbervilles D. The Dymats.
27. What type of writing is this text?
A. A biography. B. A book review. C. A novel. D. A news report.
Rudolph, a violin player, was not valued too much. One day, he traveled in a boat and was 41 in a storm. An old lighthouse(灯塔) man rescued him and led him into the lighthouse. Beautiful cars surrounded by even more beautiful models—it’s no secret why the 2012 Beijing Auto Show was popular.
The exhibition was held between April 23 and May 2.Although renowned companies showed off their top models,it wasn’t just their expensive sports cars that grabbed people’s attention.
Concept cars are a way for designers to test out their ideas on the public with complete freedom. They can try out cars with special features that could not be massively(批量)produced easily.
Designers don’t have to follow industry rules;they don’t even need to worry about whether their cars would be fllowed on the roads.
At the Beijing Auto Show,the@Ant by Chery was one concept car to draw a lot of attention.China Daily called it‘‘the very definition of a concept car”.
The vehicle is powered by electricity and is capable of driving itself. But the magic doesn’t end there.
The@Ant was inspired by actual ants.According to Car News China, with the help of automated telemetric systems,@Ants are able to“see” other@Ants and compare destination information. If two are heading the same way for a while, the vehicles connect, with one car’s rear (后面的)wheels matching up with the front wheels of another car.Up to 10@Ants can be put together and will automatically connect to form a“train".This will help save energy while traveling, as well reducing traffic jams.
The car sounds like a great idea.Further research will be needed to turn this concept car into something for the market, but concepts like Chery’s show how carmakers are working for cleaner and greener vehicles. It’s like what the@Ant motto says,“Exploring future human beings’lifestyles”.
31.The concept car is getting popular because .

C.it is exhibited as a top model
D.it conveys a new idea for the future

33.What the designers of the concept car need to do at the Auto Show is .
A.to test the safety of the concept car
B.to follow the rules in the car industry
C.to show their unique idea of complete freedom
D.to see if concept cars can be massively produced
34.The best title of the passage is .
A.Concept Cars Are Driving to the Future
B.The@Ant Draws a Lot of Attention

No one would much like the idea of eating 61 pounds of tomatoes a day. But if their goodness was put into an easy-to-swallow pill that you were told might prevent strokes(中风) and heart attacks you would probably be putting in an order tomorrow.
Researchers believe they may have come up with just that after trials. The daily pill contains a chemical called lycopene which makes tomatoes red and is known to break down fat in the vessels(血管). A Cambridge University study found taking the pills improved blood flow and the lining of vessels in patients with pre-existing heart conditions. It also increased the flexibility(灵活性) of their vessels by 50 percent. The scientists believe it could limit the damage caused by heart disease-responsible for 180,000 deaths a year-and help cut the 49,000 deaths a year from strokes. They also hope it could benefit those with arthritis(关节炎), diabetes(糖尿病) and even slow the progress of cancer.
Each pill is equal to eating around 61 pounds of ripe tomatoes. Studies have shown eating a Mediterranean-style diet rich in tomatoes fish, vegetables, nuts and olive oil can significantly reduce cholesterol(胆固醇) and help prevent cardiovascular disease.
Preliminary results from a two-month trial, in which the pill was given to 36 heart disease patients and 36 healthy volunteers with an average age of 67, were presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association. It was shown to improve the function of the endothelium- the layer of cells lining blood vessels. It also improved their sensitivity to nitric oxide, the gas which causes the enlargement of the vessels in response to exercise.
Ian Wilkinson, head of Cambridge University’s clinical trials unit, said “These results are potentially very significant and it meets the goal, but we need more trials to see if they translate into fewer heart attacks and strokes.”
Further studies are planned, with researchers hoping it could offer a choice for heart disease sufferers who can not take the cholesterol-lowing drugs.
Mike Knapton, head of the British Heart Foundation, said, “Although this showed lycopene improved blood flow in people with heart disease, that’s a long way from demonstrating that taking it could improve outcomes for people with heart disease. The best way to get the benefits of a good diet is to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.”
32. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A. We can eat too much tomato food.
B. Tomatoes are helpful to strokes and heart attacks.
C. Tomatoes will lose healthy elements were put into pills.
D. We had better not eat tomatoes.

C. are widely used among patients D. cost patients so little money
34. Who were the volunteers by taking part in the trial?

For over one hundred and fifty years, Americans of all social classes have worn blue jeans. 39 Whether they are worn for work or for fashion today. Strauss' invention continues to be popular not only among Americans but also among people around the world.
Levi Strauss was born in Germany in 1829. 40 He grew up in Kentucky before moving to New York in 1847. Before becoming an American citizen and moving to the West in 1853, Strauss worked in his brother's dry goods business. This gave him a chance to produce his famous invention. After the gold rush of 1849, Strauss decided to move to the West to seek his fortunes.
Strauss did not want to be a person who searched an area for minerals. Instead, he knew he could make a good living by selling supplies to the miners. At first, he planned to sell sewing supplies and cloth. 41 When he heard miners complaining that their clothes were easily broken or they usually tore their pockets during mining, he decided to use a special fabric to make pants for the miners. These pants proved so popular
that he quickly ran out of materials to make more.
In 1873, Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor named Jacob Davis who had invented a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets (铆钉). This made the pants last a long time. Because Davis did not have the money to patent his idea, he offered to share it with Strauss if Strauss would agree to pay for the patent. 42 .
By the time Strauss died in 1902, he had made a great contribution to American fashion. 43 The business has been growing ever since and Levi Strauss' company is now one of the largest clothing companies in the world.
A. As a young boy, he moved with his family to the United States.
B. Nobody knew what kind of material was suitable.
C. He did and Levi jeans have been made with metal rivets ever since.
D. However, he did not get much business for those products.
E. He also made a great contribution to America's clothing industry.
F. Since they were invented by Levi Strauss, they have become a symbol of American consumer culture.
G. As the business grew, Strauss got much money from it.
Getting vaccine (疫苗) shots is a nightmare for many people. But after the medicine is injected into your body, you probably breathe a sigh of relief because you know you're protected. 36
The police department in Jinan, Shandong recently discovered that improperly stored or expired (过期的) vaccines, worth more than 570 million yuan, may have been sold in more than 20 provincial-level regions in China since 2011. All the vaccines involved were produced by licensed companies, but as they were not stored or transported in approved conditions, namely being refrigerated between 2℃ and 8℃, the quality could not be guaranteed. The vaccines were for 25 diseases including poliomyelitis (脊髓灰质炎) and rabies (狂犬病).
But there's no need to panic. "Improperly stored or expired vaccines seldom, if ever, cause a toxic (有毒的) reaction," said the World Health Organization in a notice on March 22. 37
China's approved vaccines are divided into two categories. 38 It includes the HBV vaccine (乙肝疫苗) and the DPT vaccine (百日咳、白喉和破伤风疫苗). Vaccines in the second category are not free and residents can choose whether to take them or not. The vaccines in this case fall under the second category.
39 And for the second category, people should go to qualified organizations to get vaccinated.
Apart from expired vaccines, some also worry that effective vaccines may also result in serious side effects. 40 It's "extremely rare' to get seriously ill after vaccination. The benefits of vaccination are far greater than its risks. Without vaccines there would be more harm and deaths.
A. Therefore, some parents insist their children should get vaccinated in any case.
B. However, these days, some Chinese people are questioning whether they should get vaccinated.
C. The case therefore shouldn't stop parents from getting their children vaccinated for the first category.
D. The biggest risk is that the vaccines have side effects.
E. In response to this, experts said the most common side effects of vaccines are mild and can go away within a few days.
F. Residents are required to be given the vaccines in the first category free of charge.
G. It added that there was likely to he minimal (最小的) safety risk in this particular case.
