Dear Ms. Wang,

I am writing to inform you of some arrangements about my composition course and Latin course next year.

I’ve decided to re-establish the 5-paragraph essay as the goal for the composition course. I interviewed some of my former students and they all agreed that being able to write critically and continuouslywas important to them.

So next academic year, Term 1 will be like always: sentences to paragraphing. And Term 2 will work toward the 5-paragraph essay. The final 3 weeks of Term 2 will be reserved tointroduce writing for TOEFL and CEE. By that time, if the students have done their job correctly, then they should be able to write quite well.

As for the Latin course, I will post notices around campus next week so that the students will understand what’s on offer before I actually introduce the course. A number of students already emailed me about the course.

I am sure you don’t understand what a big deal our opening this program at our school is. People around the world are interested in what we plan to do. There are many rewards available to the students who succeed in the course. Please share what I have said with the administration. I want them to understand the importance of this course. The reason I have contacted these colleagues (actually Oxford contacted me) isthatI have confidence in our students and in myself. I know that when those professors meet our students and hear them speaking and reading Latin, they are going to be amazed. It will open all sorts of doors for students that they never even thought of knocking on.

Well, that’s it for now. I’ll see you soon.

Yours,

Edward Johnson

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or, skating or skiing in winter. It may be a game of some kind—football, hockey, golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering(登山).

Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure(闲暇).

Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man- made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man- made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.

If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.

The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.

A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps(阿尔卑斯山). They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

1. Mountaineering lovers may suffer from the following except____________.

Forget Cyclists, Pedestrians are Real Danger

We are having a debate about this topic. Here are some letters from our readers.

■Yes, many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worse offenders.

People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade (避让) them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision.

The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own that are, to them, much more important than the welfare of others.

——Michael Horan

■I love the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists (Viewpoints, May 29). I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads.

I was walking across Altrincham Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me.

The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used.

The police do nothing. What a laugh they are!

The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent (发荧光的) jacket and lights at night and in the morning they should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them.

——Carol Harvey

■Cyclists jump on and off pavements (which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.

I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.

Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists?

It's about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be treated and there might be an opportunity to claim.

——JML

EBay will launch an online group gift-buying service today designed to make it easier for several people to chip in, buy and pay for gifts using their social-network and e-mail contacts

EBay North America Vice President Christopher Payne says it is going to be a major step forward in social commerce, which is the still-small practice of selling products through social networksOnline retail experts aren't as certain, but eBay says the new tool makes it easier for friends and relatives to chip in (凑钱) for gifts because it eliminates the headache of collecting contributionsIt can also be used for family members to pitch in to buy, say, an expensive child seat for a mother

Anything on eBay that's available immediately, rather than up for bid, can be purchased this way starting today at groupgiftseBaycomIf members of an extended family wanted to buy a gift for one member, one person would choose a gift — or have one recommended by eBay — and invite family members to chip in using Facebook or e-mailThose who wanted to join in would choose an amount to contribute or agree to pay a requested amount and pay using either PayPal or a credit cardThey could also add a personal note

If enough people don't chip in, the organizer can ask people to contribute more or choose a less expensive gift

"I see myself using this most in cases when I typically might not buy someone what they want because of price," says Nitzan Shaer of Boston, who was part of an online test of the site

EBay, with its 200 million products, millions of sellers and mobile commerce proficiency, is a logical place to pull together the products, groups of buyers and payment tools, Payne says

At least 12 sites, such as FrumUscom and divvycom, facilitate (便于,利于) group purchases but don't sell productsAlthough a handful of retailers, including Victoria's Secret and 1-800-Flowers, sell products through Facebook, Payne says he expects social commerce will take off as rapidly as shopping using mobile devicesEBay did more than $600 million in sales on mobile devices last year and expects mobile sales to increase to $15 billion this year

Although one in five consumers surveyed said they'd used Facebook for shopping in the past year, 88% said they would not be buying holiday gifts through a social network, mobile phone or smart phoneOf these, 26% were reluctant because of security or privacy concerns, and 20% were unclear about the benefits of using phones or Facebook to shop

Students and teachers at a Los Angeles high school missed their lunch break after a mountain lion walked into the school and tried to join them.

“The big cat was seen to walk across the schoolyard at John F. Kennedy High School shortly after noon on Friday. Instead of sitting down to eat, students and teachers quickly hid themselves in classrooms and called the police. The police sealed off the area until a wild animal expert could arrive and knock the animal out with a couple of tranquilizer darts(麻醉飞镖),” said Andrew Hughan, the spokesman of Department of Fish and Wildlife.

When officers arrived, the mountain lion ran into a nearby backyard but quickly grew sleepy and confused after the darts hit it. “It’s on its way back to the Santa Susana Mountains,” said Hughan. He added that the animal appeared to be healthy and about 2 or 3 years old. The department later posted a photo on Twitter of the sleeping big cat that was being taken to the wilderness.

Kennedy High School is in the city’s Granada Hills section, on the edge of mountain lions’ habitat. Still, it had to travel a couple of miles through a large neighborhood, across a golf course and around a freeway to get there. “Probably what happened was that it was running after a deer, a rabbit or a dog late last night for food. It looked up this morning, saw the school and thought, ‘Oh, oh, I’m in trouble now.” said Hughan. “Mountain lions wander in cities every few weeks, but this one got more attention because it broke the school’s quietness.”

A famous mountain lion known as P-22 has been wandering in the Hollywood Hills near Griffith Park for some time and P-22 killed a bear in the park’s Los Angeles Zoo last month, but it remains popular enough to have its own Facebook page.

   A. Warned loudly

B. Closed tightly

   C. Protected bravely

D. Searched carefully

26. What do we know about mountain lions according to Hughan?

   A. They seldom leave where they are living.

   B. They once killed many animals in the zoo.

   C. They sometimes do much harm to citizens.

   D. They often wander somewhere in the cities.

27. What is the main purpose of the text?

   A. To tell readers a piece of interesting news.

   B. To warn students and teachers of wild animals.

   C. To tell readers something about mountain lions.

   D. To tell people what to do if a mountain lion appears.

Teachers say the digital age has had a good influenceand a not-so-good influenceon this generation of American teenagers. More than 2,000 teachers took an online survey. Three-quarters of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had amostly positiveeffect on their students’ research habits and skills. But 64 percent said the technologiesdo more to distract (使……分心) students than to help them academically.” And 87 percent agreed that these technologies are creating aneasily distracted generation with short attention spans.”

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the National Writing Project. Judy Buchanan is the vice director of the National Writing Project and a co-author of the report. Ms. Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more and faster. “Teachers really favor these tools because they are ways to make some of the learning exciting and engaging. Young people favor these tools. The goal is to really help them become creators of meaningful content, and not just sort of consumers.”
    But one problem the
survey found is that many students lack digital literacy. They trust too much of the information they find on the Internet. Judy says these students haven’t developed the skills to determine the quality of online information. “It’s something that really has to be taught and paid attention to. Because in a world in which things happen quickly, you do need to step back, reflect and analyze the information you have.”
Another problem is blamed on something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the result is a
reduction in the desire and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. They say students are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research libraries.
    Many teachers are also
concerned that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

32. The text mainly tells us _________.

A. all the students use digital tools

B. the Internet is playing a key role

C. teachers encourage using digital tools

D. digital tools bring about benefits and problems

33. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?

34. The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably means _________.

  A. students do not have the right digital tools

B. students do not always have access to the Internet

C. students haven’t the ability to adjust themselves

D. students can’t judge online information properly

35. Some students don’t tend to work hard because _________.

  A. they can get answers on the Internet quickly

  B. printed books and libraries around aren’t enough

  C. the Internet can’t make students concentrate

D. they can copy each others’ work without being punished
