There are many reasons for people to study abroad. One is that you can have the chance to make yourself know about the culture of the place. Although we humans belong only to the same one species, we are divided into several races. 36 .And when countries are divided by oceans, naturally the way of life in that country is different from ours.
Once you are studying in a foreign country, you will slowly learn to speak the language of the place.__37__If you want to ask for directions or if you are lost, it can be of great help.
38____If you study in such places as Spain and the Philippines, there are lots of foreign sights to see.
Studying abroad will also give you the chance to experience a totally different curriculum(课程).39 .
Studying abroad is also a memory that can be valued for a lifetime. 40___Once you have made friends with your classmates, I’m pretty sure you will enjoy being with them in your hang-outs, in your parties, and even in helping out with each other’s homework.
A. This is an opportunity to make friends from other races.
B. Studying abroad also offers an opportunity to travel.
C. Different countries have different cultures.
D. A college course in the UK, for example, is not similar to the one we have here.
E. Learning the native language of the place can also greatly help you to go around.
F. English is spoken as a third language in many countries.
G. There are Africans, Europeans, Asians and etc.
I recently traveled to San Francisco for some meetings and found myself with a half day to 36 . My 37 : The 49ers’ first game of the season, against the Green Bay Packers. The America’s Cup sailing races. Or I could get 38 .
After a terribly long line at the car rental center, I was 39 . So I disappeared into the fog and clouds shrouding the Pacific Coast Highway and headed south with absolutely no 40 in mind. I drove through tunnels 41 out of the mountains and stopped at a few state beaches; at one, I watched a wedding out on the cliffs among the crashing 42 . Back in the car, I drove toward San Gregorio, a town that you can easily 43 . I know because I drove right through it and 44 up on a narrow pine tree–bordered asphalt(柏油) road that felt like it would go on 45 .
A few people just moved around outside the San Gregorio General Store, talking about the motorcycles they've owned over the years. Inside, I found a bar with regular customers, two people playing guitar together, and, of course, a full-on store. I 46 a song, took a seat quickly, and watched the guitarists play and dance. Then I congratulated them, 47 a couple of wrinkled dollars in their bucket, and walked back out into the world.
It was pouring outside. We all waited, some patiently, others 48 , because nature
messed up their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens 49 away the dirt and dust of the world. “Mom, let’s run through the 50 .” said a girl. “When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, if God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!” “Honey, you are 51 right.” Mom said. Then off they ran. And yes, I did. I ran.
The day could have been so 52 : being 53 into a stadium or bar half-watching sports. 54 this was much more rewarding. Hours prior, I was on a flight with the masses, going through the motions. Then I was out on my own, having an unexpected and unrepeatable experience.
I learned something on September 8: Don’t be 55 to get lost—on purpose or otherwise—and have zero expectations. It will be good for you. I promise.

My 12-year-old daughter,Lauren, came home from school yesterday. She 41 waved her grade book to me.She had been 42 A-1 in most subjects such as mathematics, language arts and science—a great 43 ! Then she sadly pointed out that her perfect score was damaged by a B-1 in 44 and a C-1 in Playsical Education.
I asked her what the scores 45 .She said that the 46 showed the achievement and the number showed the effort. That moment I 47 that the grades were misleading.I reached out my hands and gave her a big 48 and told her in my mind she had a perfect score. It didn’t 49 that her grade in French was a“B”—“l” 50 that she had tried her best. That is something to make any parent proud.
Everybody is 51 .Everybody has different potential. Not all of us will become scientists or sports 52 .But without 100%effort no 53 can be achieved. If I see a salesperson fail at sales, the 54 thing I want to examine is the effort being put in.If there is a problem with 55,the salesperson has no future. But if I see a salesperson isn’t 56 with l00%effort,he or she is worth my effort in helping.Maybe a bit of training or some 57 from a more successful person will 58.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I have heard the news which you are recruiting volunteers for the Winter Olympic Games to
be held in 2022. So I am writing to apply to be one of the volunteers.
I am Li Hua, a 18-year-old boy who is built up by doing sports regularly in my spare time. I
loved sports so much that I can devote all my energies to serve the game. However, with a very
good command of English, I can speak the language fluent, which makes me more qualified to help foreigners. Meanwhile, not only do I have the ability to organize activity, but also I am outgoing and energetic, which is benefits me in communicating with strangers. Everything taking into account, I think I am a good fit for the position. I would appreciate if you could consider my
application and offer me the opportunity at your convenience.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours Li Hua

Researchers with the University of Cambridge say they have the first real evidence of a new state of matter, some 40 years after it was first theorized.
Known as “quantum spin liquid(量子旋转水)”,the matter state causes normally unbreakable electrons to break into pieces called “Majorana fermions.”These fermions are an important discovery.Physicists believe the material is vital to further develop quantum computing.Computers employing Majorana femuons would be able to carry out calculations beyond the scale of modern computers quickly, they say.
Quantum spin liquid explains some of the eccentric behaviors inside magnetic(磁性的)materials. In these materials, the electrons should behave like small bar magnets, all adjusting towards magnetic north when a material is cooled. But not all magnetic materials do this-if the material contains quantum spin liquid, the electrons don’t all line up and become involved.
“Until recently,we didn’t even know what the experimental fingerprints of a quantum spin liquid would look like,”researcher Dr.Dmitry Kovrizhin says.“That created a challenge for the researchers,so they decided to employ neutron scattering(神经扫描)techniques to look for evidence of break”.What they found surprised them. The features matched nearly exactly with quantum spin liquid models theorized by physicist Phil Anderson in 1973.The results of their breakthrough were then published in the scientific journal Nature Materials on Monday.
Don’t get too excited just yet on its applications, though.Kovirzhin’s work is only the beginning and as we’ve seen with quantum computing there is a lot of work to be done. But it’s still exciting regardless.
“It’s an important step for our understanding of quantum matter,” Kovrizhin says.“It’s fun to have another new quantum state that we’ve never seen before-it presents us with new possibilities to try new things.”
12. What can we learn, about “Majorana fermion” according to Paragraph 2?
A. It is an important discovery 40 years ago. B. It is a surprising theory raised by Phil Anderson.
C. It is a key piece in developing quantum computer. D. It is an unbreakable electrons employing computer.
13. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “eccentric” in Paragraph 3?
A. Strange. B. Complex. C. Permanent. D. Obvious.
14. How did the researchers make the breakthrough?
A. By adjusting magnetic materials. B. By using neutron scattering techniques.
C. By repeating maths calculations. D. By changing electronic structure.
15. What is the author’s tone about the future of quantum matter?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Optimistic.
________ the past, leaving the sadness behind, _____ you’ll see the door of a new bright world open before you.
A. Forget; and B. Forgetting; and C. Forget; / D. To forget; /
In the English Reading Week, one of my classmates recommended a quote to us,
61 goes like this; "Your future depends on many things, 62 mostly on you. " I can't agree 63 (much) with this view. It's true that our future 64 (determine) by many things, such as opportunities and help from others, but our own attitude, determination, 65 hard work play a more important role. In 66 words, we are the master of our own future.Take Abraham Lincoln for example. He was born in a poor family, and only received a 67 (limit) education in his childhood. Yet through his painstaking efforts, he changed not only his own fate but also the history of America. 68 to this day. Lincoln 69 (regard) as one of the most inspiring figures in the world. 70 , I firmly believe that our future is in our own hands.

Speaking is not equal to learning
1. You don't need to study grammar too much.
The first suggestion may sound strange to many students who begin to learn English, but
it is exactly important. 36 However, if you want to speak fluently, you should try to
speak English without thinking too much of grammar. Studying grammar will only slow you
down and make you hesitate. You will think about the grammar rules instead of naturally
saying a sentence like a native.
2. You can't translate every word.
When you try to speak English, you do not need to translate every word from your
mother tongue. 37 Another problem you may meet is that you will misuse grammar rules
that you have learned in your mother language.
3. 38
The reason why many people can learn well is that they often practise. But in order to
speak English fluently, you need to practise speaking. When you study, don't just listen.
Speak out loud the material you are listening to and practise what you hear. Practise speaking
out loud until your mouth and brain can do it without any effort. 39
4. You should study correct material.
A phrase you often hear is, "Practice makes perfect." This is not completely true.
Practice only makes what you are practising permanent. If you practise the incorrect sentence,
you will have perfected saying the sentence incorrectly.40
A. You should try to speak fluently.
B. You need to practise speaking what you hear.
C. By doing so, you will be able to speak English fluently.
D. If you want to pass examinations, you should study grammar well.
E. If you listen more, you can speak correctly and fluently sooner or later.
F. Therefore, it is important that you study material that is commonly used by mostpeople.
G. The order of words is probably completely different and you may be both slow and incorrect by doing this.

“Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the history of Philadelphia,” remarked Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter when the announcement was made. “As a World Heritage City, Philadelphia is being officially recognized on the global stage for its wealth of contributions to the world.
To be named a World Heritage City, a city must be home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO World Heritage sites are selected for their universal value and significance. For Philadelphia, the site is Independence Hall.
Independence Hall is where two of the most important documents in US history—the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution—were adopted. The Declaration of Independence, approved on July 4, 1776, united the 13 former British colonies and declared them independent from British rule. The US Constitution, signed in 1787, established the American
democratic system of government. A democracy is a system of government in which the people elect their leaders. The Constitution later spelled out the basic freedoms American citizens have.
Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger says the city’s selection as a World Heritage City also reflects its educational, cultural, and economic achievements. The city i
s home to dozens of colleges and universities, and many museums, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “Philadelphia has rightfully earned its place as one of the greatest cities in the world.” Greenberger says.
