高三英语上学期上册试题

For people with thousands of pages to read, speed reading seems like manna (甘露) from heaven. In addition, speed reading helps lighten the load of information you have to absorb since it provides a filter that you can use in screening all bits of information before you approach it.

36    Examining how much information you need will help you identify how you should read a certain document to maximize your learning and comprehension. Thorough reading may no longer be necessary in some cases, such as when you only need an outline of a certain document.

Another skill that can ease the burden of a reader is the ability to read words in blocks. Make sure you do not spend too long on a certain block.   37    This will also make reading less tiresome and boring.

To master this important skill, you have to practice reading more and more words in a certain block at a time. A suggestion shared by some experts regarding this step is to increase the distance between you and the document you are reading. If you can read more and more words in one block, you can cut down on the time it usually takes you to read a certain text and you will be able to read more in a shorter period.

Readers should also practice reducing the number of times they go back to previous sections or blocks. Using a pointer such as the tip of a pencil or pen can also help to make the flow of your reading smoother and faster.   38   Thus, your speed in reading will largely depend on the speed of the movement of your pointer.

If you still find yourself confused about the topic even after you have finished reading the document, do not re-read right away. Re-reading immediately will just lead to slower speed in reading.   39   Getting your own reading corner will also help.

40    Continue practicing and practicing the techniques aforementioned and soon, you'll achieve the reading speed that will work best for you.

AIn this technique, your eyes will follow the tip of the pointer

BThis saves time and reduces the effort that you have to make

CTaking a short break first is recommended before reading the material again

DAs a final note, the most important point is consistent and deliberate practice

EYour invaluable time can be saved if you can have your reading speed doubled

FThe first step to increase your reading speed is to identify the specific information you need

GReducing the time you spend on a specific number of words in a block will make no big difference

My Left Foot (1989)

Imagine being a prisoner of your own body, unable to make any movements except to move your left foot. The main character in My Left Footbased on the real story of cerebral palsy (大脑性麻痹) sufferer Christy Browncan barely move his mouth to speak, but by controlling his left foot, he’s able to express himself as an artist and poet. Shine (1996)

Do you have a talent you’re afraid to share with the world? David Helfgott seemed meant from childhood to be “one of the truly great pianists,” but the pressures of performing (and pleasing his father) resulted in a complete breakdown. Ten years in a mental institution didn’t weaken Helfgott’s musical gift: When he was rediscovered, he was playing concertos in a bar. Shine received seven Oscar nominations (提名), and Geoffrey Rush won best actor for his performance of Helfgott.

Life Is Beautiful (1997)

Nothing’s more powerful than the love between a parent and a child. In this heartbreaking Italian film, a father (Roberto Benigni) makes an unbelievable sacrifice for his 4-year-old son: trapped in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945, the Jewish man convinces his boy that they are playing a complicated game. He manages to spare him the horror of the terrible war, and even in his final moments of life, keeps his son smiling and hopeful. Benigni won the best actor Oscar.

My day began on a definitely sour note when I saw my six-year-old wrestling with a limb of my azalea(杜鹃花)bush. By the time I got outside, he’d broken it. “Can I take this to school today?” he asked. With a wave of my hand, I sent him off. I turned my back so he wouldn’t see the tears gathering in my eyes.

The washing machine had leaked on my brand-new linoleum. If only my husband had just taken the time to fix it the night before when I asked him instead of playing checkers with Jonathan.

It was days like this that made me want to quit. I just wanted to drive up to the mountains, hide in a cave, and never come out.

Somehow I spent most of the day washing and drying clothes and thinking how love had disappeared from my life. As I finished hanging up the last of my husband’s shirts, I looked at the clock. 2:30. I was late. Jonathan’s class let out at 2:15 and I hurriedly drove to the school.

I was out of breath by the time I knocked on the teacher’s door and peered through the glass. She rustled through the door and took me aside. “I want to talk to you about Jonathan,” she said.

I prepared myself for the worst. Nothing would have surprised me. “Did you know Jonathan brought flowers to school today?” she asked. I nodded, thinking about my favorite bush and trying to hide the hurt in my eyes. “Let me tell you about yesterday,” the teacher insisted. “See that little girl?” I watched the bright-eyed child laugh and point to a colorful picture taped to the wall. I nodded.

“Well, yesterday she was almost hysterical. Her mother and father are going through a nasty divorce. She told me she didn’t want to live, she wished she could die. I watched that little girl bury her face in her hands and say loud enough for the class to hear, ‘Nobody loves me.’ I did all I could to comfort her, but it only seemed to make matters worse.” “I thought you wanted to talk to me about Jonathan,” I said.

“I do,” she said, touching the sleeve of my blouse. “Today your son walked straight over to that child. I watched him hand her some pretty pink flowers and whisper, ‘I love you.’“

I felt my heart swell with pride for what my son had done. I smiled at the teacher. “Thank you,” I said, reaching for Jonathan’s hand, “you’ve made my day.”

Later that evening, I began pulling weeds from around my azalea bush. As my mind wandered back to the love Jonathan showed the little girl, a biblical verse came to me: “...these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” While my son had put love into practice, I had only felt anger.

I heard the familiar squeak of my husband’s brakes as he pulled into the drive. I snapped a small limb bristling with hot pink azaleas off the bush. I felt the seed of love that God planted in my family beginning to bloom once again in me. My husband’s eyes widened in surprise as I handed him the flowers. “I love you,” I said.

8. Why did the woman cry when seeing her son had broken the azalea bush?

  A. Because she could not tolerate the harm to it.  B. Because it made her bad mood even worse.

  C. Because her son did not ask her for permission.  D. Because she wanted to hand it to her husband.

9. The writer wanted to hide in the mountain cave probably for the reason of         .

  A. feeling fed up with her endless daily housework

 B. her husband’s failing to fix the machine in time

  C. boring daily routine with a feeling of lack of love

  D. her hoping to seek happiness in a brand new place

10. We can infer from the passage that the writer expressed love to her husband in that         .

  A. she was inspired by her son that love was supposed to be felt and practiced

  B. she felt guilty that she misunderstood her husband and wanted to apologize

  C. she felt it necessary to have a complete family for the happiness of herself

  D. she wanted to prove her love and expected the same words from her husband

In the USA, driving laws differ somewhat from state to state and considerably from what you are used to. Here is a list of some important differences.

Speed Limits

Speed limits are designated in miles per hour(MPH),not kilometers. One mile equals 1.6093 kilometers. Within cities the speed limit is usually 25 mph. Major streets with two or more lines may post a higher limit of 35 mph, but you should assume a 25 mph limit unless you see a sign with a higher limit. Highways have a speed limit of 55 mph, with some interstate highways posting a higher limit of 65 mph. Fines for speeding are heavy and can result in higher insurance fees and license suspension(扣留).

Driving on the Right

Unlike the UK, some countries in Asia, in Australia, and in the United States cars drive on the right side of the road, and steering wheels(方向盘) are located on the left side of the car.

Even if you don’t drive a car, you need to be aware of this rule. Every year a few international students are hit by cars because they step off the roadsides into the path of oncoming traffic. On most streets cars will be coming from your left, not your right.

Insurance

Most states require you to maintain certain minimum levels of insurance on your car in case you are involved in an accident. The insurance covers your liability(责任) for damage to other cars and injuries caused to all the people involved in the accident. We strongly recommend getting insurance that covers more than the legal minimum. You can also get collision(碰撞) insurance to cover the cost of fixing your car and theft insurance in case the car is stolen, but this is only worthwhile for a new car or a model of recent years. If you don’t have car insurance, you won’t be able to register the car.

56. When driving in an American city, you’d better limit your speed within about

A. 25 mph         B.35 mph           C.55 mph           D.65 mph

57. If you drive beyond the speed limits, you’ll

A. be sent into prison                   B. get no car insurance

C. have to pay much money         D. be taken to the police station

58. We learn from the passage that international students in America

A. always drive cars on the left    B. can hardly afford to have their own cars

C. know about the rules clearly    D. should pay more attention to the rules

59. Which car insurance should you get in order to save your money to repair your car?

A. Liability insurance.                  B. Theft insurance.

C. Collision insurance.                 D. Injury insurance.

My childhood and adolescence were a joyous outpouring of energy, an endless pursuit for expression, skill, and experience.  41  was only a background to the great delight of lessons in music, dance, and dramatics.

Then one night at a high school dance, a remark, not intended for my  42  , injured my youthful happiness: “That girl, what a pity she is blind.” Blind! A(n)  43  word that implied everything dark, blank and helpless.  44  I turned and called out, “Please don’t feel sorry for me, I’m having lots of fun.”  45  the fun was not to last.

In college years, I began to struggle with the problem of earning a living. Part-time teaching of piano and occasional giving concerts proved only  46  sources of economic support. In terms of time and effort involved, the financial return was  47  . Self-doubt and dark moods sparked within me.  48  to my misery was the repeated experience of knowing my sisters and friends dating excitedly. How  49  I was to my piano,  50  I could dissolve my frustration, accompanied by Chopin, Brahms, and Beethoven.

Then one day, I met a girl, an army nurse, whose faith was to change my life. As our acquaintance  51  into friendship, she sensed my  52  . She said, “Stop knocking on closed doors. I know your opportunity will come. You’re trying too hard. Why don’t you relax? And have you ever tried  53  ?” The idea was strange to me. I had always believed that if you wanted  54  , you had to go and get it for yourself. Yet, my sincerity and hard work had yielded poor returns, so I was  55  to try anything else. Self-consciously, I performed the daily practice of prayer. I said, “God, show me the  56  for which you sent me to this world.”

In the years to follow, the answers began to arrive, satisfying  57  my most optimistic expectation. One of the answers was Enchanted Hills, where my  58  friend and I had the privilege of seeing blind children come alive in God’s out-of-doors.  59  are the sources of pleasure and comfort I have found in friendship, and most important of all, I  60  closer to God and, through Him, to immortality (永生).

American children are not the only couch potatoes with nearly one third of children globally spending 3 hours a day or more watching TV or on computers, according to the study of over 70,000 teens in 34 nations.

From Argentina to Zambia, Regina Guthold of the World Health Organization in Geneva and her colleagues found most children were not getting enough exercise and that it made no difference whether they live in a rich or a poor country. “With regards to physical levels, we didn’t find much of a difference between rich and poor countries,” Guthold said, “Growing up in a poor country doesn’t necessarily mean kids get more physical activities.”

The researchers defined adequate physical activity as at least an hour of exercise outdoors for at least 5 days a week. Children spending 3 or more hours a day watching TV, playing computer games or chatting with friends were classified as sedentary.

The researchers found only a quarter of the boys and 15 percent of the girls were getting enough exercise by these definitions. A quarter of boys and nearly 30% of girls were sedentary and didn’t get enough exercise with girls less active than boys in every country aside from Zambia.

Girls from India were the most active with 37 percent meeting exercise recommendation, while girls from Egypt were the least active with 4 percent getting enough exercise. Children in Myanmar were the least sedentary while the most sedentary nations were St .Lucia and the Cayman Islands.

People show deep concern for kids’ lack of physical activity in various nations. Why do they have a low level of physical activity? Guthold figured that urbanization could be a factor as well as easy access to cars and TVs.

  9. If you are sedentary, you ____________.

A. are a diligent student spending much time doing homework

B. have at least an hour of exercise outdoors 5 days a week.

C. like watching TV and playing computer games

D. spend longer hours sitting or lying without moving

 10. Which of the following statements is true as to Guthold’s finding?

A. Most children around the world don’t meet the exercise recommendation.

C. Children in rich countries relatively get less physical activity.

D. Only 4% of the girls from Egypt are not active in exercise.

 11. All the following statements are wrong except _______.

A. Children in poor countries get more physical activities.

B. Girls in Egypt are more active than those in India.

C. Couch potatoes are those children addicted to snacks.

D. Children in Myanmar are less sedentary than those in St .Lucia.

 12. What would the writer be most likely to discuss in detail in the paragraph that follows?

A. The suitable amount of physical activities for students.

B. Some of the factors for the popularity of cars and TVs among the kids.

C. The reasons behind the lack of physical activities.

Body language has been used for thousands of years. Some scientists, especially those who believe in the evolution, understand body language to have been the initial communication method in the early man. This is yet to be proven and it is quite possible. However, it is imperative to understand that different kinds of body language vary in their use from one culture to another.

It is very important that you understand the meanings of different kinds of body language in different communities before using them. For example, some years back, the President of the United States, Richard Nixon, visited a foreign country in which he knew nothing regarding their culture. When he arrived in the presidential jet and got outside, having nothing to say as he never understood their language, he stood in the doorway then with a broad smile on his face and did the “peace” body sign of two fingers in the air. The crowd started shouting and it was later learnt that the two fingers, which we perceive as a symbol of peace, were an offensive sign to the locals of that country.

Another common cultural difference in body language is the “thumbs up”. In Northern America for example, this sign means that everything is going on fine or “I need a ride” if made in a highway. On the other hand, with the Greeks as an example, a “thumbs up”, especially when done with a rapid upward and slow downward motion means “up yours”.

It is very important that you know your target audience if you plan on traveling to foreign countries. This will help avoid insulting them by understanding body language meaning of your culture to them or from them to you. This will save you a lot from both frustrations and punishment.

5.         What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A. To explain the body language                              B. To show the communication methods.

C. To introduce the topic of this passage.                D. To prove the history of body language.

6.         What does the underlined word “imperative” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. Difficult.                 B. Necessary.                             C. Common.                D. Special.

7.         Richard Nixon is mentioned in the second paragraph in order to tell us that ______.

A. he was a great American President                      B. he knew little about custom and culture.

C. American culture is different from others        D. Body language is different in different cultures.

8.         The author develops the main idea of this passage by _______.

A. listing some practical facts                                 B. giving some good examples

C. telling some interesting stories                            D. comparing the different languages

My family lived in a motel for two years. Like most families living there, we stayed in a two-bedroom suite. We were living from paycheck to paycheck, so when Christmas approached, we didn't know if we would be able to purchase gifts for our children.

A few days before Christmas someone dropped off presents for all the kids that lived at the motel. It brought so much joy to all the children, most of whom knew that they wouldn't be receiving anything.

Five years ago, we moved out of the motel. After that, my husband and I were working hard at Joe’s Crab Shack to support our family. A few days before Christmas. I was working a “big top” and a single table. The man at my table could see the large tables was taking most of my time, but I was very patient and  friendly. Between drinks and food I was able to chat with him about his family and mine. He left me $ 10, then walked out. A bout 10 minutes later, I turned around and there he was again. He gave me a hug, and put something inside my apron, telling me “ Have a Merry Christmas”. I reached into my apron and pulled out $ 800.

I was so overwhelmed by his generosity that I burst into tears. He had given me more than enough money to help my family catch up on our bills. After discussing what we should do with the money we had left over. We decided to buy presents for the families living at the motel, so we could pass on the blessing that we had received. Since then, it has been a tradition for us to give Christmas gifts to the families in need.

Last year we were able to give presents to each of the 80 children at a school in our community, and throw a Christmas party for them. This year our goal is to add at least 20 children.

Mark Twain was a great writer. He was from the USA. He was born in 1835. He was also a famous speaker. He was famous for his sense of humour. Many people liked to listen to him talk because he liked to tell some interesting stories to make people laugh all the time.

One day Mark Twain was going to a small town because of his writing. Before he was going to leave, one of his friends said to him that there were always a lot of mosquitoes in the town and told him that he’d better not go there. Mark Twain waved (摇动) his hand and said, “It doesn’t matter. The mosquitoes are no relatives of mine. I don’t think they will come to visit me.”

After he arrived at the town, Mark Twain stayed in a small hotel near the station. He went into his room, but when he was just about to have a rest, quite a few mosquitoes flew about him. The waiters felt very sorry about that. “I’m very sorry, Mr Mark Twain. There are too many mosquitoes in our town.” One of them said to him.

Mark Twain, however, made a joke, saying to the waiter, “The mosquitoes are very clever. They know my room number. They didn’t come into the wrong room.” What he said made all the people present laugh heartily.
