In a speech this week to the Institute of Civil Engineering, the Prime Minister, David Cameron, made clear his support for wind energy. He focused on some of the many advantages of developing the industry.
Let’s examine those reasons. It is an abundant, clean and sustainable source of energy, reducing our dependence on expensive fossil fuel imports, increasingly from politically unstable parts of the globe. Let’s not forget that Russia turned off the gas supply to Europe in 2006.
More recently, we have all felt the pain this winter, when international gas prices soared by 40% compared to last year. Should we carry on exposing ourselves to the instability(不稳定) of global energy prices and the unpredictability of global events, or should we recognize the value of taking control of our energy supply?
As for the economic opportunities, over the last decade wind energy has attracted $5 billion in investment(投资)to the UK and is set to go above $50 billion by 2020. Look at the companies queuing up to build wind turbine (涡轮) factories in the UK, such as Siemens and Vestas. Examine the number of people employed in the wind industry in the UK—nearly 12000, now with nearly 90000 jobs by 2021.
The UK is already the global leader in wind power, with greater ability than anywhere else in the world—enough to supply more than a million homes with electricity all year round—and the government is calling for an increase by eight times in the amount of wind turbines installed by 2020, which the industry can achieve as long as it gets the right level of support from ministers. In return, as well as bring the environmental benefits of clean energy, the wind industry is committed to save consumers a lot of money.

R.U.Darby and his uncle were digging for gold in the West. After weeks of labor, he was rewarded when he discovered shining ore(矿石). He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. So he borrowed money from his relatives and neighbors and went back to work on the mine.
The first car of ore was mined and sent to a smelter. The gold that they got in return proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! A few more cars of that ore would clear the debts. Then would come the big profits.
Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of Darby and Uncle! Then something happened! The vein of gold ore disappeared! The pot of gold was no longer there! They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again, but they found nothing.
Finally, they decided to quit. They sold the machinery to a man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. That man asked a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer said that the project had failed because the owners were not familiar with “fault lines(裂纹线)”. His calculations showed that the vein would be found just three feet from where it was found.
The man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to ask for expert advice before giving up.
R.U. Darby was struggling for years to pay back the money from his relatives and neighbors. He went into the business of selling life insurance.
Remembering that he lost a huge fortune because he stopped three feet from gold, Darby profited from the experience in his chosen work, by the simple method of saying to himself , “I stopped three feet from gold, but I will never stop because men say 'no' when I ask them to buy insurance.”
Darby is part of a small group of fewer than 50 men who sell more than a million dollars in life insurance every year. His “stick-ability” comes from the lesson he learned from his “quit-ability” in the gold mining business.

The British----and especially the English----are bad at complaining. Because of British politeness rules, according to which conflict should be avoided, people either just do not complain, or sometimes bottle it up and then outpour it in another way in other umimportant situations. In fact, there is a TV programme which show the British in typical situations where they would be perfectly reasonable in complaining, but they don’t. In one scene, a woman reads a newspaper over people’s shoulders and the people say nothing or look embarrassed.
The British are also well-known for putting up with bad service everywhere from restaurants to airports and railway stations because the standard rules of behaviour say that it is bad to draw attention to yourself. This is why, when you travel on the tube in London and there is yet another delay, the passengers will look at each other, sigh, smile wearily and raise their eyes to heaven. They might even say, “Huh! Typical!” in a resigned(顺从的)tone of voice that says that there’s nothing that can be done about it. When complaints are made, they are made in an apologetic or a humorous tone of voice. In France ,on the other hand, angry passengers might riot(闹事)and burn down the subway station if they had to put up with the poor service that the London underground provides.
Americans and other Europeans, who are much more direct and in-your-face than the British, often wonder why British people always say “sorry” or “excuse me” when they complain. “It’s like they’re apologizing for something that isn’t their fault, they say. They are missing the point. British people are not really sorry ---it is because the word ‘sorry’ actually works as a distancing skill. This is important in terms of negative politeness and not drawing attention to yourself. If you do not say ‘sorry’ or use other distancing words like ‘could’, ‘would’, ‘might’, ‘possibly’ and so on, you will be seen as rude.”

If a trip to Rome or Paris is in your future, be prepared: The European Union Parliament is calling for an end to visa-free travel Americans. EU lawmakers passed a resolution urging the EU Commission to impose visas on U. S. citizens traveling into the 28-nation bloc.
The dispute(争论)centers on reciprocal treatment of travelers from EU nations and the United States. While Americans have been able to travel throughout EU member nations without a visa, the U. S. still requires citizens of five EU countries-Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania-to apply for entry visas when visiting the U. S, Reuters reports. Citizens of the other 23 EU member nations can use the U. S. visa waiver program to enter America. The EU lawmakers are calling for mutual treatment for all EU citizens, says Reuters. They’ve given the EU Commission two months to respond.
The trans-Atlantic visa dispute first came to light in April 2014, according to an EU Parliament news release. At that time, five countries-Australia, Brunei, Canada, Japan and the U. S. –required visas for some EU citizens. Since then, Australia, Brunei and Japan have lifted their visa requirements for all EU citizens. Canada, which currently imposes(推行)visa requirements on Bulgarian and Romanian citizens, plans to follow suit in next December, leaving just the United States at odds with the issue of reciprocity of visa-free travel with the EU.
The EU says if a visa requirement for Americans is introduced, it would be temporary, according to a story in Money, which did not give a time frame.

One of the many great lines in the movie Apollo 13 came from Ed Harris, who played NASA Director of Operations, Gene Kranz. The famous line was, “ Gentleman, failure is not an option. ” He said the words because he had a clear purpose that the three astronauts trapped in space must be sent home safely. The driving force behind their seeking of a solution was motivated by a true purpose.
Here is the simple principle. If you have a big enough “why” in life, you will always figure out the “how”. A person without a purpose in life is like a boat without a rudder, floating aimlessly without a direction and going nowhere. In all walks of life, when referring to someone’s success, we often hear the words “focus and determination”. But Merriam Webster defines the word “purpose” as the reason why something is done, a feeling of being determined to achieve an outcome. There are many talented and intelligent people in the world but they are unsuccessful because they lack direction. I believe that our life depends on our purpose. Whether you’re single or in a team, having a purpose allows you to start, evaluate, and improve your talents or abilities and helps you find your path in life and achieve your success finally.
A friend of mine once told me that the most motivating speech he had ever heard was just three short words. It came from his wife when she said, “Honey. I’m pregnant. ” He said those few words instantly motivated him because he now had a big “why” in his life, a purpose to work hard to support his family. In fact, when your “why” gets bigger, you get better because you stop holding back and you’ll go all out. It’s why you often hear about some great people perform superhuman actions when failure is not an option!
21. What does the underlined word “rudder” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Something that gets the boat started.
B. Something that makes the boat float.
C. The reason for which the boat is built.
D. Something that directs the boat to a certain place.
22. What is the most important thing for success according to Merriam Webster?
A.Talent. B. Purpose. C. Determination. D. Intelligence.
23. The author gives his friend’s example to show .
A. why words can motivate people easily
B. that family love is very important in our daily life
C. that a purpose can make people try their best

24. What does the author mainly tell us in this passage?
A.To be a successful person. B. To have a big “why” in life.
C.To make a right choice. D, To get rid of failure.

As a boy who is always described as being unmanly, I often have conversations with others like this:
Them: “Why do you 41 like that?”
Me: “I don’t 42 understand—act like what?”
Them: “Like a(n) 43 ! Why do you feel the need to move like a fairy and have a womanish voice?”
At first, I wouldn’t know how to 44 . Now I know better; I simply call them out and then have a quick 45 chat that goes something like:

Anyway, I never understand why my communication-based actions are 50 with a specific gender (性别) . I don’t know why some girls get side-eyed when they decide not to wear a dress to a formal event.
Once I asked a mother carrying a cute baby, “Is it a girl or a boy?” She looked at me 51 impatience, and said, “She’s 52 a girl; look at the 53 of her clothing.”
Now, I guess people who act outside of their gender roles like me are seen as threatening because we 54 a system that generally forces us to choose to be one way or another. 55 , there is no “middle ground” that is accepted in society when people express one’s gender.
Some girls don’t want to wear makeup, and some boys 56 to wear makeup— 57 it! I have only been alive for 18 years, 58 it is extremely evident that enforced gender roles do not only affect those who 59 the gender roles like me, but also those who give their blood, sweat and health just to fit in with them. The world would be a less 60 place if we could simply recognize that gender and gender expressions are not fixed concepts.
