Sure, human dads can play games with their kids and help with homework, but can they give birth? Daddy sea horses can! This Father’s Day, while you’re praising your daddy, you may also
remember that some of the best dads in the world can be found in the animal kingdom:
Sea horses: The “Mr. Moms” in the sea, male sea horses, carry up to 2,000 fertilized eggs in small bags in their stomachs until they hatch. Even after the babies are born, they stay inside the bag until they are ready to live by themselves.
Darwin’s rheas: Thought your dad was overprotective? Darwin’s rheas, also known as South American ostriches (鸵鸟), are so protective of their children that they have even been known to attack small airplanes on the ground if they get too close to their home!
Marmosets: These little monkeys do everything but give lectures on how to give birth! Devoted dads assist during their babies’ birth. They also let Mom get some rest by taking care of the kids when she’s not nursing them.
Sand grouse: These pigeon-like birds live in areas where water is rare, so fathers fly as many as 50 miles to get water for their kids. After they dip their breast feathers in the water, they fly home and let their chicks suck the water from their bodies.
Fathers in the animal kingdom are not that different from our own beloved dads. This Father’s Day, when you are honoring your dad, honor animal dads, too, by practicing kindness toward all
animals.

Blogging (博客)has become something of a big thing in the last few years. Just like the Internet was 10 years ago, blogging is popular with an underground culture that is doing it for love and passion.
Blogging is a way of collecting links to webpages and sharing thoughts and ideas with people online. Blogs are basically online journals or diaries which are created for sharing information and ideas.
Dominic, a fifth-grade student, writes: “The blogs give us a chance to communicate between ourselves and inspire us to write more. When we publish on our blog, people across the entire world can respond by using the ‘comments’ link. In this way, they can ask questions or simply tell us what they like. We can then know if people like what we write and this indicates to us where we can improve. By reading these comments, we can discover our weaknesses and our strengths. Blogging is an opportunity to exchange our points of view with the rest of the world rather than just people in our immediate environment.”
Blogging is sweeping the Internet. A recent report noted that at least three million Americans have created blogs, with similar numbers being seen worldwide.
Two years ago, Andrew Sullivan decided to set up a Web page himself and used “Blogger. com” to publish some daily musings(冥想) to a readership(读者人数) of a few hundred. He worked hard at the blog for months for no financial reward. But the result is that he is now reaching almost a quarter of a million readers a month and making a profit.
Think about it for a minute: Why not build an online presence with your daily musings and then tell your first book through print-on-demand(POD) technology direct from your Web site? Why should writers go to newspapers and magazines to get an essay published when they can simply write it themselves, change it into a PDF file, and charge a few bucks per download?
This, at least, is the idea: a publishing revolution more profound than anything since the printing press. “Blogger. com” could be to words what Napster was to music—except this time, it’ll really work.

How long has 3-D technology been around? Most of us might think of crowds of teenagers in a 1950’s movie house watching Bwana Devil in 3-D technology made its first appearance on the scene in1838 with the first stereoscope. And the first actual 3-D movie was a 1903 film called Le Arivee d’un Train.
Although it has such a long history, the technology has still remained based on one simple principle—to make 3-D effects you mu
st find a way to project two slightly different pictures to each eye. Modern 3-D technology works by rapidly flickering(闪动) two versions of the movie and projecting them onto each eye. The brain does the rest of the work, combining the two pictures together into one and giving the show the appearance of depth, the third dimension.
But does this exposure, especially long exposures, cause harm to the child’s developing brain and visual(视觉的)system? Unfortunately, long-term studies on new flicker digital 3-D technology and children aren’t yet available. We do not know if regular or daily 3-D viewing over years affects the developing visual system, although older 3-D methods basically do the same thing and are not considered harmful.
The question of possible harm in modern 3-D use in TV is really based on two facts: the amount of time children will now be watching 3-D TV each day and sensitivity some children show in reaction to 3-D viewing. It is difficult to make actual lab studies of longer term 3-D viewing in children because of the possible harm of the experiment. Researchers will have to wait until 3-DTV technology is already in the marketplace for a number of years, then check heavy 3-D TV watchers and compare them with non-watchers.
With a 3-D television technology in the home, we will soon be able to answer the question of w
hether or not longer and more frequent periods of 3-D exposure cause more changes in the visual system. We may find that the bigger problem is the introduction of a new technology that lead to even more time spent on TV rather than playing outdoors.
45. According to the text, 3-D technology _________.
A. was refused by people when it first appeared
B. will soon change the way we watch TV
C. does no good to our visual system
D. has a history of almost 200 years
46. As for the influence of 3-D movies on children health, the author might be ____.
A. positive B. worried C. uncertain D. uninterested

B. discuss if 3-D viewing is harmful to children
C. introduce the advantages of 3-D technology
D. predict the development of 3-D technology

Mary Frye enjoyed writing poetry very much. She wasn’t interested in publishing her poems, and once in a while she passed one on to her friends. “I don’t think I have any great talent,” she said. But many people would disagree. One of her poems, especially, has given hope and comfort (安慰) to people for over 50 years.
When one of her friends lost someone close, Mary Frye wrote a poem, which seemed to spring from her heart, and gave it to the sad woman. That poem was later passed on to others, who, in turn, passed it on until it became an American classic. “If it helps one person through a hard time, I am satisfied,” said Mary, who received no pay for her work. It has been used at countless funerals (葬礼), translated and used in foreign lands.
Here is her original text, which has moved so many for so long:
Do not stand at my grave and weep, / I am not there, I do not sleep. / I am in a thousand winds that blow, / I am the softly falling snow. / I am the gentle showers of rain, / I am the fields of ripening grain. / I am in the morning hush, / I am in the graceful rush. / Of beautiful birds in circling flight, / I am the starshine of the night. / I am in the flowers that bloom (盛开), / I am in a quiet room. / I am in the birds that sing, / I am in each lovely thing. / Do not stand at my grave and cry, / I am not there. I do not die.
How many people are finding strength and comfort from a poem by a woman who always said she had no talent? And what if she had kept her poetry to herself? Don’t be afraid to use the talents you do have; it has been well advised. The woods would be very silent if only the birds with the sweetest songs were heard.

A gunman opened fire in Orlando’s Pulse nightclub early morning Sunday , killing approximately 50 people and injuring another 53 .
Clubbers were enjoying an evening at Pulse , which describes itself as “ the hottest gay bar in Orlando , ” when shots started to go off around 2 am. A hostage(人质)situation occurred , and didn’t end until authorities used a vehicle armed to teeth to break down the door of the building and kill the gunman at around 5 am .
Sunday morning’s attack surpasses the shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Sndy Hook Elementary School in 2012 to become the worst mass shooting in US history .
Authorities have identified the shooter as 29-year-old Omar Saddiqui Mateen from Fort Pierce , about 120 miles southeast of Orlando . CNN reports Mr. Mateen was previously trained as a security guard .
The federal government and FBI “ have suggestions the individual has leanings towards Islamic terrorism , but right now we can’t say definitely , ” says Ron Hopper , assistant special agent of FBI’s Orlando bureau . But Mateen’s connection to Islamic terrorism has not been proven , leading authorities to also investigate the shooting as a possible hate crime against the LGBT community .
The Orlando blood donation facility tweeted(推送)that the bank was in “ urgent need ” of donations Sunday morning following the shooting . But within hours , they announced their bank was at capacity due to the long lines of volunteers who showed up to donate .
However , after the initial tweet at 10:40 Sunday morning , criticisms of the United States’ stand on blood donation by the LGBT community resurfaced on social media from those who wanted to help but were prohibited due to their sexuality .
“ It’s legal to buy an AR-15 assault rifle . It’s illegal for a gay man to donate blood to victims of the massacre . The world makes no sense . ” said John Barcus .
( LGBT : a community of four types of people ; lesbian , gay , bisexual , transgender .)

Zheng Pengyu: Interest is the best teacher. Classrooms that weren’t fixed could give students the chance to explore their interests. At the same time, they would be able to learn on their own because they would have to make their own decisions. All in all, the new system would be a good chance to inspire students’ love for studying.
Sun Yao: Despite its benefits, I’m worried about whether the new system would work. Going to different classrooms would take up a big part of our break time and we would have less time to relax after class. Also, not all schools could offer so many different classes.
Shi Zhenghan: I support students learning in different classes. It would solve the problem of some students thinking the classes are too easy while some think they are too difficult. Teachers could also teach more effectively. What’ s more, friendships built while in different classes might be a pleasant surprise.
Zhou Qingqing: In my opinion, studying in different classrooms might affect students’ psychological development. They might find it difficult to develop deep and strong friendships with other students if they had to change classrooms constantly. They would also lose their sense of belonging to a certain class.
Hu Qile: I applaud the idea. It would help teachers set up special teaching plans for different classes. For students, making choices by themselves could encourage them to be responsible. Changing classrooms could also help remove the boredom of doing the same dull routine (惯例) every day.
Wang Xiaoqian: The new system might help with students’ individual development, but I still prefer the current system. Studying in one fixed classroom, students with different academic levels can help each other. Spending your senior middle school years with the same classmates is an unfortgettable experience.
21. According to Sun Yao, which of the following sentences is TRUE?
A. The new system will work if great measures are taken.
B. All the schools can’t afford so many different classes.
C. Students will have more time to relax.
D. He supports the system because of its benefits.
22. Among the following people, who prefers the new system?
A. Sun Yao B. Zhou Qingqing C. Hu Qile D. Wang Xiaoqian
23. What is the passage about?
A. Different opinions about changing classrooms.
B. Students find it difficult to develop friendship.
C. Schools should offer different classes to students.
D. Changing classrooms can help with students’ individual development.
How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments, mostly for entertainment purposes, is fair and respectful?
Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.
Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range. The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.
The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusually and self-destructive behavior called zoo-chosis(圈禁性精神病). A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.
12. How would the author describe the animals’ life in zoos?
A. Easy B. Unhealthy
C. Unhappy D. Dangerous.
13. In the state of zoochosis, animals usually_________.
A. remain in cages B. behave strangely
C. attack other animals D. enjoy moving around
14. What point of view does the author hold according to the text?
A. Zoos are not worth the public support.
B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.
C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.
D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.
15. What can we infer from the text?
A. It’s acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats
B. Visitors can learn a lot about animals after visiting the zoo
C. Zoos often pay much attention to the animals’ natural lifestyle
D. Zoos can earn some money from their captive breeding programs
The new high-speed railway line between Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur(维吾尔族) self-governing region, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, has cut train travel time by half to less than 12 hours.
The dramatic improvement will benefit many families planning reunions for the Spring Festival.
“For the first time, I feel home is not that far away after all,” said Liang Shaofu as he boarded a high-speed train in Urumqi with six members of his family. The 35-year-old left Lanzhou to set up a dry fruit business in Xinjiang eight years ago, and he has now settled in Urumqi. “We normally drive home for the Spring Festival to avoid the difficulties of buying seven train tickets for the whole family during the peak season,” Liang said. “Driving can be very tiring and dangerous sometimes, so one year we even decided not to go back to Lanzhou simply to avoid the trip.”
More than 600,000 passengers traveled on the line during its first month, and the Urumqi Railway Bureau said the introduction of high-speed services will ease transport pressure during the Spring Festival peak season.
The existing usual railway line could no longer support Xinjiang’s development. All passenger trains will gradually shift to the new line, leaving the old ones to be used for goods. As a result, Xinjiang’s annual goods ability could reach 200 million metric tons(公吨) from the current 70 million.
The line passes through areas that experience high winds, and it also crosses parts of the deserted Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(高原) and the bone-dry sands of the Gobi Desert.
The project could help China to promote its high-speed railway technology abroad, said Ma Xizhang, director of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway project’s management department in Xinjiang.
24. How long did it take to go from Urumqi to Lanzhou by the usual train before?
A. About 24 hours. B. About 6 hours.
C. About 18 hours. D. about 12 hours.
25. What’s the main advantage of the new high-speed railway?
A. It takes more time to go to Urumqi to Lanzhou.
B. It will be more convenient for people all over the country to Xinjiang.
C. All the people in Lanzhou can return home on festivals.
D. It helps to improve Xinjiang’s development.
26. From the passage we can learn _______.
A. Xinjiang’s annual goods ability can increase nearly four times
B. the new railway technology may help more railway lines to be built abroad
C. the high-speed railway lines can’t be built across the bone-dry sands
D. the old railway lines can only carry goods now
27. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The new high-speed railway line is good for all people to go home.
B. The new high-speed railway line benefits businessmen to carry goods.
C. Taking the new train is safer than driving home from Urumqi to Lanzhou.
D. Businessmen seldom went home for the Spring Festival before.
Most Americans believe that someone isn’t grown-up until the age of 26 and they should complete their education, have a full-time job, have a family to support and be financially independent. They also believe that becoming a real grown-up is a process which begins at about the age of 20 and takes about five years, according to the report from the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center.
The findings are based on a representative sample of 1,398 people over the age of 18 who were surveyed in person. The survey found that people expect the transitions to grown-up status to be completed at the following ages: age 20.9 self-supporting; age 21.1 no longer living with parents; age 21.2 having a full-time job; age 22.3 education completed; age 24.5 being able to support a family financially; age 25.7 getting married; and age 26.2 having a child.
“There is a large degree of agreement across social groups on the relative importance of the seven transitions,” said Tom Smith, director of the survey. The only obvious pattern of differences is on views about supporting a family, having children and getting married.Older adults consider these more important than younger adults do.This probably shows in large part a change in values across generations away from traditional family values. The most valued step toward reaching adulthood, the survey found, is completing education, followed by full-time employment, supporting a family, financial independence, living independently, and marriage.
32. According to the first paragraph, someone is a grown-up when he _______.

How to Love Your Parents ?
Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part, a source of who you are. 9 .
Tell them you love them every morning. A gentle “good morning” and “I love you” will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, you might still wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world.
Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them, preparing yourself for when you’re off on your own. It’s OK to get angry but angry actions don’t help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your feelings, or talk to a friend. 10 .
Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don’t get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it’s cold, raining, snowing, or too hot.
