Why are so many people afraid to fail? Quite simply because we forget that failure is part of the human life and that every person has the right to fail. Every person is able to fight failure and finally succeed.
Most parents work hard at preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand still. Another way is to blame others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid. There’s a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for life in the real world. Young children need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time, and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even when you don’t win. A child often feels terrible, of course, when he is not invited to a birthday party, or is not chosen into a football team. But parents should not say “It doesn’t matter.” quickly. The young should be allowed to experience failure and be helped to come out of it.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both adults and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it. You must learn to ask “Why did I fail?” . Don’t blame anyone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong and how you can improve. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about asking them.
Success just repeats what has been done. It is not as good a teacher as failure. You can learn how to give a good party from an unsuccessful one.

Humans may be a bad influence on their best friends---at least when it comes to problem-solving. In a task that wasn’t very tough, wolves performed must better than dogs. All the animals had to do was pull the lid off a food container, containing a sausage treat.
Monique Udell studies animal behavior at Oregon State University in Corvallis. She tested 10 pet dogs and another 10 dogs from an animal shelter. In one set of tests, a person was nearby but did not encourage or discourage the dogs. Those dogs typically spent 10 to 15 percent of their time gazing at the person. They spent a mere 5 percent of their time or less touching the container.
Udell offered the same challenge to wolves. These animals had been raised and fed by people but still lived outdoors. Here, the wolves didn’t look at the nearby person. Instead, they devoted about 90 percent of the time to struggling with the box holding a treat.
When someone walked around the dogs and actively encouraged them to keep trying to open the box, the dogs did spend more time handling the problem. A few more even managed to open the box. But their success rate still did not match the wolves. The dogs and wolves were also tested when no one was present. But even then, the dogs didn’t paw or teat the box much more than they did when a human was present.
29. According to paragraph 2, how did the dogs perform in the experiment?
A. They showed reduced intelligence
B. They found the treat in the box less attractive
C. They found the wolves were dangerous

People often say that a good child should be honest, while for me, I always lie to other and do not realize the results of what I say. Yesterday, I learned a lesson about tell lies. I remember picking up my first magazine when I was eleven years old. It was celebrity monthly for teens — and I had a deep interest in it. Every week it would arrive y mailbox in suburban Wisconsin. I would race up to my bedroom and read the whole thing one sitting. It was filled with perfect Hollywood stars, dating and beauty tips and gossip. I felt like I was “ in the know.”

Suddenly, I had a new obsession: starting a magazine where the models were everyday girls and women who looked like me. My dream job was to be the editor-in-chief of a women's magazine — but one thing is much different from our ordinary magazines. The magazine wouldn't focus on celebrities. Everyone would just be real people with real stories.
As it turns out, there are two women who are pursuing just that — via the first “no photoshop” fashion magazine, a bi-monthly one called Verily, which published its first issue in June. Verily never changes the body or face of its models. The goal of our magazine is to celebrate the best state of us.

By the age of 12, Abbi has already accomplished so much.
The advice she has for kids like her, who want to accomplish their goals, is, “Nothing is impossible. You can do anything you put your mind to. Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel the most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as John talks to himself: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation for the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Adjust your cycle to some extent by staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (打起精神) and work better at your low point.
Begin with a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a slow yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do usual work in the afternoon and spend time doing important work for your high peak hours.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become a master since you stated to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons (土著的英国人)who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference is.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,"he said. "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. "Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.

Laura and Allan live in Sweden, a country 73 everyone is expected to lead an orderly life according to rules laid down by the government. In Sweden dog owners must pay for any damage their dog does. A Swedish Kennek Club official explains 79 this means: if your dog runs out on the road and gets hit by a passing car, you, as the owner, have to pay for any damage 80 (do) to the car, though your dog has been killed in the accident.
The idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly. Sadly, biological facts prevent us ever accomplishing such a thing without artificial aid—we simply weigh too much, and all our mass pushes down through our relatively small feet, resulting in a lot of pressure that makes us sink.
However, several types of animals can walk on water. One of the most interesting is the common basilisk Basilicusbasilicus, a lizard (蜥蜴) native to Central and South America. It can run across water for a distance of several metres, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the water's surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward. For humans to do this, we'd need huge feet that we could bring up to our ears in order to create adequate “hitting”.
But fortunately there is an alternative: corn flour. By adding enough of this common thickening agent to water (and it does take a lot), you can create a “nonNewtonian” liquid that doesn't behave like normal water. Now, if the surface of the water is hit hard enough, particles(粒子) in the water group together for a moment to make the surface hard. Move quickly enough and put enough force into each step, and you really can walk across the surface of an adequately thick liquid of corn flour.
Fun though all this may sound, it's still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice. If you must do it, then keep the water wings handy in case you start to sink—and take a shower afterwards!
8. What do we know about Basilicusbasilicus from the passage?
A. It is light enough to walk on water.
B. Its huge feet enable it to stay above water.
C. It can run across water at a certain speed.
D. Its unique skin keeps it from getting wet in water.
9. What is the function of the corn flour according to the passage?
A. To create a thick liquid.
B. To turn the water into solid.
C. To help the liquid behave normally.
D. To enable the water to move rapidly.
10. What is the author's attitude towards the idea of humans' walking on water?...
A. It is risky but beneficial.
B. It is interesting and worth trying.
C. It is crazy and cannot become a reality.
D. It is impractical though theoretically possible.
Have you ever considered why you begin yawning too when you see someone yawn? Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, apparently it's because we have mirror neurons (神经元)in our brains.
Put simply, the existence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains imitate it whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how, we learn to smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people.
Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the areas which relate to our ability to use languages, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to ( for example: “The hand took hold of the ball” ) , the same mirror neurons were triggered as when the action was actually performed (in this example, actually taking hold of a ball).
Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which are not fully functioning. However, it is not yet known exactly how these discoveries might help find treatments for social disorders.
Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with even more information regarding how humans behave and interact. Indeed, it may turn out to be the equivalent (相等物)for neuroscience of what Einstein's theory of
relativity was for physics. And the next time you feel the urge to cough in the cinema when someone else does — well, perhaps you'll understand why.
25. Mirror neurons can explain _____
A. why we smile when we see someone else smile
B. why we yawn when we see someone else stay up late
C. why we cry when we are hurt
D. why we cough when we suffer from a cold
26. The underlined word "triggered" in the third paragraph probably means “_____’’.
A. built up B. broken up C. set off D. cut off
27. We can learn from the passage that mirror neurons _____.
A. determine our knowledge and language abilities
B. control human physical actions and feelings
C. result in bad behavior and social disorders
D. relate to human behavior and interaction
28. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Ways to find mirror neurons. B. Problems of mirror neurons.
C. Functions of mirror neurons. D. Existence of mirror neurons.

Pilling a cat can be a 'terrible” experience. Cats don’t want something pushed down their throats, and they’ll fight with all their strength to prevent it. In fact, it’s amazing how powerful their small bodies can be.
The easiest way of pilling a cat is to press the pill into powder. Then mix the powder with a small amount of wet food. If your cat usually eats dry food, she will probably view the wet food as a treat and eat it up.
If your cat won’t eat the wet food that contains the pill or if she is too ill to eat, you can get a “pill gun”. There are some basic instructions. Getting your cat’s mouth to open is going to be the most difficult part. First, be sure the pill is in a handy place. Then you can put your cat on a bookshelf with her bottom in a corner or you can put her on your lap firmly tied. Have your cat facing to the right if you’re right-handed. With your left hand, hold your cat at the cheekbones, putting your palm (手掌) at the top of her head. Keeping your finger off the trigger (扳机), with your right hand, Insert the pill gun until the pill is positioned over the tongue and open throat Be sure to give your cat a treat directly after giving the pill.
If you don’t feel comfortable using a pill gun, you can try giving the pill by hand. Push your cat’s head backwards just far enough so that her nose is pointing towards the ceiling. At this point, most cats will slightly open their mouths. With the little finger or ring finger of the hand holding the pill, open the bottom jaw a little more. You may need to hold her top jaw with your other hand while doing this. Aim straight and lightly throw the pill or drop it. Most cats will then swallow the pill.

In my memory, my hometown was small village, but it was beautiful. When I was young, I was liked swimming in the river. The water was so clean that I could see fishes in them. As I missed my hometown, I go back home last week. Unlucky, I found the place in my memory was not like that it was. The water was dirt and the river was polluted so seriously! I couldn’t believe it. That beautiful hometown was destroyed by the pollutions. What a shame! I hope people can pay attention to protect the environment and make the beautiful hometown come back in life.
Everybody gets angry, but out-of-control anger isn't good for you or those around you. So
here are five simple strategies to help you learn how to manage your anger:
• Relax. Breathe deeply, from your stomach.
36 Repeat it to yourself and visualize a relaxing time and experience.
• Change the way you think. When you're angry, your thinking can get exaggerated (夸大
的). 37 For instance, instead of telling yourself, “Oh, it's terrible! Everything's ruined,” tell yourself, “It's understandable that I'm upset about it, but it's not the end of the world.”
• 38 Statements like “This never works.” or “You're always forgetting things.” will make you feel your anger is justified (情有可原的) and there's no way to solve the problem.
They might upset people who might be willing to work with you on a solution.
• Have a better communication. Angry people tend to jump to conclusions. If you are in a
heated discussion, slow down. 39 And take your time before answering. Instead of saying the first thing that comes into your head, think carefully about what you want to say.
• Use humor. Psychologists say that highly angry people tend to think “things ought to go my way!” “Silly humor” can help you get a more balanced perspective. So, when you feel that anger coming the next time, picture yourself as a king or queen, walking around, admired by everybody, and getting your own way in every situation. The more detail you can get into your
imaginary scenes, the more likely it is to put a smile on your face. 40
A.Try replacing these thoughts with more reasonable ones.
B.Listen carefully to what the other person is saying.
C.Be careful with words like “never” or “always”.
D.Avoid using these strategies when you're in a tense situation.
E.Try changing the topics so your talks won't turn into arguments.
F.Then slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as “take it easy”.
G.That will help you realize that the things you're angry about are really not very important.

We live in a rural area of the San Francisco Bay Area. ___18___of what we see is the beauty of nature. One of the few drawbacks(缺点)to living out the boondocks(偏远地区)is that ___21___services, such as litter collection, are less available than those closer to the city.
A helping ritual that I practice ___22___ with my two children is picking up litter in our surrounding area. We’ve become so___23___to doing this that my daughters will often say to me in animated(兴致勃勃)___24___, “There’s some litter, Daddy, stop the car!” And if we have___25___, we will often pull over and pick it up. It seems strange, but we actually ___26___ it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practically___27___. Once I even saw a complete stranger picking up litter close to where we ___28___. He smiled at me and said, “I saw you doing this, and it seemed like a good idea .”
Picking up litter is only one of an endless supply of possible helping rituals. You might like___29___a door open for people, visiting lonely old people in nursing homes, or shoveling snow from someone else’s driveway. Think of something that seems effortless yet helpful.
