Where do you keep ice? In the freezer, of course. That's what scientists might have thought when they were looking for a safe place to store ice from mountain glaciers from around the world. They’ve decided to store ice in Antarctica because global warming is causing some of the glaciers in places like the Alps to melt.

Jerome Chappellaz of the French National Centre for Scientific Research is involved in creating an ice vault (地下室)there. He says: “We are probably the only scientific community whose sample (样本) is in danger of disappearing from the face of the planet. If you work on rocks or on tree rings, the raw material is still here and will be for many centuries."

And why do scientists need to study ice from the AlpsIce formed on the top of a mountain is made of snow accumulated over thousands of years. Trapped air bubbles (气泡) contain samples of the atmosphere that existed when that ice was formed. Ice is a record of climate. By examining ice, we know carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher now than in the last three million years. Researchers use this kind of data to build computer models and try to predict what might happen in the future.

The ice vault will be housed in a snow cave at the Concordia Research Station, which is operated by scientists from France and Italy. The ice samples will be sealed in bags and placed 10 meters below the surface at a constant temperature of -50*C. This will put the scientists’ minds at rest. Losing the ice samples would be a disaster, and nobody wants to see a mine of scientific knowledge lost forever in a giant pool.

28. What is the researchers' purpose of studying ice?

A. To learn about climate.

B. To learn about the Alps.

C. To trap air bubbles.

D. To reduce carbon dioxide.

29. Jerome compares ice with rocks and tree rings to state that        .

A. ice should be stored at home

D. it's necessary to store ice

30. What makes Antarctica a safe place to store ice?

A. Its large mountains.

B. Its function as a freezer.

C. The abundant ice samples there.

D. The absence of global warming.

31. What do scientists think of storing ice in Antarctica?

A. They consider it an easy job.

B. They’re not optimistic about it.

C. They think it will cause disasters.

D. They think it’s a reliable way.

Hank Viscardi was born without legs. He had—not legs but stumps(残肢) that could he fitted with a kind of special boots, People stared at him with cruel interest. Children laughed at him and called him ‘Ape Man’ (猿人) because his arms practically dragged on the ground.

After graduating from school, he worked his way through college. He swept floors, waited on table, or worked in one of the college offices. The Big Brother in the novel 1984 listens to everything and nothing can escape his ears . Now in reality , we have Facebook . The social media giant has never denied that it’s keeping track of conversations you have near your phone ( if the Facebook app is open , that is ) , but not , one expert has told NBC that Mark Zuckerberg’s empire may be keeping ears on you at a more regular basis . According to Professor Kelli Burns , who teaches mass communication at the University of South Florida , it may be listening more often than it lets on .

To prove her point , Burns turned on the microphone feature on her phone , and said , “ I’m really interested in going on an African journey . I think it’d be wonderful to ride in one of those jeeps . ” Less than a minute later , when she checked her Facebook page , she was met by a story about a journey – the first post on her newsfeed . There was also a car ad on her page .

While Facebook says that it’s only keeping its ears open to help “ identify the music you’re listening to and TV matches you’re watching , ” Burns’ little experiment suggests that there may be other motivations at play as well . But the social media company has denied claims that it records any conversations , and told The Independent , “ Facebook does not use microphone audio to inform advertising or News Feed stories in any way . Businesses are able to serve related ads based on people’s interests and other statistic information , but not through audio collection . ”

Whether you believe this statement or not , there are ways to stop Facebook from listening in at all . Simply turn off your phone’s microphone by heading over into Settings ( if you’re an iPhone user ) , going to the Privacy tab , then clicking on Microphone . From there , you can remove Facebook’s mic privileges , and probably , stop the company from hearing your conversations . On Android , you can also go to Privacy under the Settings tab , and change Facebook’s permissions .

So the next time you’re chatting with your friends about your summer vacation plans , keep an eye on your Facebook feed . There may be more participants in your conversation than you realize .

In the United States, many low income parents cannot afford to buy enough food for their children. A program called Kids Café is helping some of these children by providing free nutritious (有营养的) snacks and meals during after-school programs.

At a community center in Virginia just outside of Washington, D.C., children make a snack as part of their after-school program. The snack is very healthy for your body, but the main thing is that it tastes really, really good, Keith Clements tells them. He runs the Kids Café program.

The children are between the ages of 5 and 11 and are from several local schools. About half have parents from Ethiopia. Many of the children eat their traditional food at home. Kids Café, with food offered free by a food bank, gives them an opportunity to try different types of food.

It’s good, says one girl. But Rebecca Nance, whose parents are from the US, is not so sure. The taste is weird. Her mother, Daffany Nance has two children in the program. She’s glad her kids are getting nutritious food. Even in my house we don’t have much junk food,” she says, “so it’s very important that it’s healthy and continues to help them grow better.”

The charity, Feeding America, started the national Kids Café program in 1993. The charity says more than 16 million children in the United States do not have enough healthy food to eat.

Kids Café became part of the after-school program at this community center five years ago. Lori McFail heads the after-school program. She says some children do not eat good evening meals because their parents work late or cannot afford healthy food. She hopes the children will make full use of what they’ve learned about nutrition in their lives.

For many people, music has always been part of life, and they listen to music on radio, on iPod and on Internet. As is vividly showing in the picture, the music fan is trying to download songs he enjoys. But the website requires payment first every time he wanted to download something, that annoys him. Many people are used to free music being downloaded from the Internet without realizing they have done harm for others’ right. Music artists work very hardly to compose music. If not paid, he will lose enthusiasm to go ahead, and gradually we will find beautiful musics nowhere.

Ann was on her first package trip in Rosas, Spain.

At the hotel, she checked in, and then went to her room to change before dinner. She was just ready to go downstairs when she found that her Spanish money wasn’t in her handbag. She carefully looked in all her luggage, but she couldn’t find it. All she had was a small purse with ten English pound notes in it!

Late in the afternoon of their last day, a girl, Jane, asked her why she never ate with them in the hotel restaurant. Ann told her about her money problems. Jane looked at her for a minute, and then said, “But didn’t you know? The price of this holiday includes everything!”

BELJLNG — Eating at a Beijing restaurant is usually an adventure for foreigners, and particularly when they get the chance to order “chicken without sex life” or “red burned lion head”.
Sometimes excited but mostly confused, embarrassed or even terrified, many foreigners have long complained about mistranslations of Chinese dishes. And their complaints are often valid, but such an experience at Beijing’s restaurants will apparently soon be history.
Foreign visitors will no longer, hopefully, be confused by oddly worded restaurant menus in the capital if the government’s plan to correctly translate 3,000 Chinese dishes is a success and the translations are generally adopted.
    The municipal
(市政)office of foreign affairs has published a book to recommend English translations of Chinese dishes, which aims to help restaurants avoid bizarre translations. “It provides the names of main dishes of famous Chinese cuisines in plain English,” an official with the city’s Foreign Affairs office said, “Restaurants are encouraged to use the proposed translations, but it will not be compulsory.” It’s the city’s latest effort to bridge the culture gap for foreign travelers in China.
“The book is a blessing to tourist guides like me. Having it, I don’t have to rack my brains trying to explain Chinese dishes to foreign travelers,” said Zheng Xiaodong, a 31-year-old employee with a Beijing-based travel agency.
“I will buy the book as I major in English literature and I’d like to introduce Chinese cuisine culture to more foreign friends,” said Han Yang, a postgraduate student at the University of International Business and Economics.
It is not clear if the book will be introduced to other parts of China. But on Tuesday, this was the most discussed topic on weibo.com, China’s most popular micro-blogging site.

Fun doesn’t have to be expensive

Everyone likes to have fun, but not everyone has much money to spend. Here are some free or cheap ways to enjoy yourself.

Get outside

Going outside in good weather can be a lot of fun, especially if you go with a friend.    16

If you live in a city, you can go window-shopping. Or you can explore an old part of town and admire the buildings.

Try a hobby

While you’re out, take pictures of things you find. Planning and taking pictures can make you aware of the beauty all around you. Photographic equipment can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. You probably already own a camera or a cell phone that can take pictures. Other creative hobbies can also be done with basic materials.    17

Find an event

Libraries often hold free public events.    18    And while you’re there, borrow a book or movie for free. Museums and universities also hold free events.

If you can’t find a free event, you can volunteer at an event that requires tickets. People who organize concerts and plays need help.    19   Sometimes they reward volunteers with free tickets.

Meet a friend

Relationships are often the best things in life.   20   Invite a friend for a walk, an event or a time working on your hobby. Hosting doesn’t have to be difficult. If your friend comes in the afternoon, you don’t have to serve a meal. You can sit and talk, play board games or card games or watch a movie.

A. A friend in need is a friend indeed

B. Stop by one to find out what’s going on.

C. Hike or bicycle on a nearby path or in a park

D. Whatever you do, find someone to share it with.

E. It’s a good idea to stay at home to watch a movie

F. You could set up or take down chairs or greet visitors.

G. Drawing and writing require nothing more than a pencil and paper.
