After the examination, the doctor told my parents my sight would get worse and that I would lose my sight finally. On the way home from hospital, no one said a word. One day, would I only imagine the scenery beyond the glass rather than see it?
That September, I entered middle school. Most nights I had homework that included an armful of books to read. To keep up with other children, I took great trouble to finish the task. With my nose a couple of inches from the page, I was tired easily. What's worse, after I had read several pages on my own, the words slipped off the page into inky pools.
However, then I did not have audio books and electronic devices like kids do now. Instead, Mom volunteered to read out loud. Mom worked part time, cleaned the house, cooked and spent time with Grandma. In spite of being so busy, she showed up in my room like clockwork. She put on her reading glasses. Mom always thought those glasses made her look old. To me, she looked like a teacher.
In my room, Mom's voice competed with the ticking of the clock. Being forced to focus on listening, I found a way to keep my marks up and compete with the other kids. When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand with confidence. Teachers praised me for having a good memory. Reading removed my fear for my failing sight, reading also made me curious about other people's challenges and how they managed. Though I could not use my eyes to fix on each passage, my mind lit up with every new book.
True to what the doctor said, the worst came, but thanks to Mom, my sense of hearing now allows me to “see”. This was the most precious gift from a mother to her child.

It’s hard to imagine how a single-celled blob (单细胞斑点)in the ocean evolved into a fish* a turtle, or eventually a human. 2.5 billion years ago, lives on Earth were all single-celled. Then, these tiny creatures started getting bigger, evolving into multi-celled blobs that eventually became animals. Multicellularity is one of the most important steps in evolution, but it’s hard to study because tiny blobs in the ocean don’t really leave fossils behind.
However, there're plenty of single-celled creatures still living today. And one of them, the choanoflagellate (领鞭毛虫),seems to be our closest living smgle-celled cousin. This means that , long time ago, a common ancestor of both you and the choanoflagellate evolved in two different directions. By looking at what choanonagelates and animals have m common, scientists can start to describe that single-celled common ancestor.“Choanoflagellates are really a unique Window back in time to the origin of ammals and humans.” said Dan Rokhsar of the University of California.
Looking at a choanoflagellate,it's impossible to see any resemblance to an animal. It seems by moving a long tail. The tail has tentacles that catch bacteria to eat. But inside that single cell in the genes, Dan Rokhsar and his team found something interesting. Choanoflagellates genes produce cadherin proteins (钙粘蛋白),which have a well-known role in animals: they slick cells together like glue. But a choanoflagellate only has one cell! Scientist Nicole King thought that the choanoflagellaes used this glue to hold themselves to the surlace of water. Fhe leap to multicellularity then makes more sense, because the first multi-ceiled creatures were able to put this glue to a new and different purpose—holding their cells together! Now that's a clever trick of evolution.
32. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Multi-celled blobs didn^ exist on the earth until 1 billion years ago.
B. Choanoflagelates and animals share nothing in common.
C. Choanoflagellates and human beings share the same ancestors.
D. By watching the movement of a choanoflagellate, scientists have found that it resembles an aniinaL

A. The function of a single-ce] led blob.
B. The features of multicellularity.
C. The result of scientists’ study on the multicelled blobs.
D.The evolution of single-celled blobs.
34. Why is it difficult for scientists to study the process of multicellularity?
A. Because it happened billions of years ago.
B. Because they couldn't find any fossils in the ocean.
C. Because no singie-celiecl blobs have been left for them.
D. Because both humans and animals evolved from single-celled blobs.

What would you like to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? An astronaut? What do you need to do to achieve your dream job? Perhaps you think that studying well and then going on to work hard will get you successful career you want. We are constantly taught that our hard work will eventually pay off.
But a government survey has shown that hard work is not the only thing that will help you to move up the ladder. Two thirds of people believe that who you know matters more than what you know when it comes to social activity. So are the connections that you have more important than your education?
76% of the people in the survey believed that family background is important in influencing your chances of success. They believe that if you are privileged from birth, you are more likely to have a successful career, especially if your family is wealthy.
Even if you don’t have a privileged background, the people you know can still make a difference to your career. Networking is a skill which is encouraged by many career advisers. Some companies run networking workshops to try and encourage staff to meet other people, to communicate and build relationships. It’s a valuable skill.
But the survey also showed something quite interesting. Although most people believed that networks are more important than education, many people put their own career success down to talent, rather than background. 41% of the people said that their parents’ income had influenced their life, but at the same time, another 41% believed that they had achieved their own success.
So which is more important, what you know or who you know? It seems that by working hard and making lots of connections, the answer may be that both are very important.

It is one of the clear downsides of having friends or relatives who jet off to foreign countries. Not only is there a chance that you will have to sit through a session of boring photos displaying a holiday that you were not part of – there is also a real risk that your “loved ones” will return from their break offering a gift you really don’t want.
According to a new study, most of us fear receiving a gift – brought back from abroad by those whose intentions are entirely good, but whose taste in presents is rather more lacking. A survey conducted by travel search website Skyscanner saw over two thirds of those questioned (69 per cent) admit that they would rather not receive souvenirs from other people’s holidays. Just four per cent of the 2,000 respondents said they find holiday gifts of use.
The presents most likely to make us say an unconvincing thank you are ornaments, with 14 per cent of the survey’s respondents listing said items – cheap pottery statues – as the most disappointing travel present you can receive. Also high on the name-and-shame list are comedy T-shirts (described as “most disappointing” by nine per cent), bargain jewellery (also nine per cent), key rings and fridge magnets (seven per cent) and food products and snow globes (both four per cent).
Fifteen per cent find an instant new home for these undesired presents – the bin. Others stop short of immediately getting rid of their unrequested new possessions – but plenty of us also decline to put them on display. Six per cent said they share the burden by re-gifting the items to others, while three per cent are even more impolite and put the souvenirs up for sale on sites such as e-Bay.
But apparently, the problem of gifts no one likes is widespread. According to figures from the World Tourism Organisation, an estimated 5 billion is wasted on unnecessary ornaments by holidaymakers in Europe every year.
32. What will happen after your “loved ones” return home from abroad?
A. They probably will bring the useless presents to you.
B. They may try their best to learn to improve their taste in presents.
C. They will discuss the photos taken to make you part of the holiday.
D. They will ask you about everything that happened during their absence.
33. Which is the least disappointing travel present?
A. Cheap pottery statues. B. Food products.

B. Throw them away in the bin.
C. Present them to other friends.
D. Sell them on the second-hand market.

A. tell people about the rules for holiday gift giving

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.
But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 36 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 37
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 38 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
39 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When
someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. 40 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others
personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
A. It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.
C. Everyone was new to the network once.
D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.
E. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something
beautiful to hear.
F. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
G. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.
Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami is to offer advice to troubled readers in an agony uncle column on his website, his publisher said Tuesday. The website, named “Murakami-san no tokoro” or “Mr. Murakami’s place” will seek problems from fans of the surrealist, whose novels are published in dozens of languages around the world.
The publicity-shy writer will pen answers to queries, offering his opinions and advice on how to deal with difficulties, said Shinchosha Publishing. “He will receive questions of any kind,” a company spokesman said, adding that he will answer queries written in a variety of languages. Murakami will also answer fans’ questions on his likes and dislikes - including cats, a favorite animal of his, and the Yakult Swallows, the Japanese baseball team he supports. Problems and queries will be accepted until the end of January, and Murakami’s answers will be published over the following two months. The activity offers a rare chance for Murakami’s fans to communicate directly with a writer who spends much of his time hiding from the glare of the media. “After so long, I want to exchange emails with readers,” Murakami was quoted by the publisher as saying. Murakami is one of Japan’s best known writers and has repeatedly been tipped as a future Nobel Literature winner.
The 65-year-old, who reportedly spends much of his time in the United States, has a cult following for his intricately-crafted tales of the absurdity and loneliness of modern life, and peppers his work with references to pop culture. The website’s URL or email address for questions is not yet available, the publisher’s spokesman said.
