Everyone has a dream. We are on the way to achieve it whether the way is smooth or toughly. As senior 2 student, I have the same dream as my classmates that I can be admitted to an ideal university. In the past 2 years, I have done everything I can to equip myself with that I have learnt from my teachers. Not only have I enjoyed the pleasures of study but also I have got closer to my dream. Anxiety and pressure did discourage from me at times. Besides, with the encouragement of my teachers and classmates, I think I’ll make it.

I’m sure that there has still a long way to go to achieve my dream. No matter how challenged it is, I’ll make it come true. As the proverb said,“Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Do you feel lucky? You probably don’t. You may think you’ve got where you are today through willpower and hard work. We tend to overlook luck’s roleand this seems to get worse the richer we get; surveys show that the wealthiest are least likely to owe their fortunes to good fortune. Many such people oppose taxation(税收) and government spending: why should others get a handout(救济品) if they don’t need one? More often than notthey vote against the very policies that helped them get lucky to begin with. In a recent Atlantic essayRobert Frankan economist who has studied attitudes to chancequoted(引用) EB White: “Luck is not something you can mention in the presence of self-made men.”

However if we see this just as a problem of the super-rich peoplewe may let the rest of us off too easily. Anyone living in a highly developed economy in 2016 is already the one who benefits from luck—for examplenot living in the modern-day Central African Republic where few people can live a long life. In factwe are lucky to have been born human. You might have been a battery henor a mayfly with only one day to live.

Our blindness to such truths isn’t only because we’re self-absorbed but also we attach more significance to things that are easier to call to mind. It’s not hard to recall countless times when you put in the effort to succeed: struggling through university finalspreparing for job interviewstolerating a long-distance travel to work. On the other handit’s rather difficult to realize you’re privileged—like not being born in a war zoneor before antibiotics(抗生素),and so forth.

Before World War II,all bank tellers(出纳)were men. But as men went to war during the early 1940s, banks trained women to take their place. I was among 20 women selected by Bank of America to work as a teller at a small branch in Los Angeles.

November 23,1942 was a day I'll never forget when I was 22 years old and just two months on the job. When a well-dressed man in a suit, tie and hat came to my window. I greeted him with a friendly  “Good afternoon.” But he shouted,This is it!

'The man placed a brown bag on the counter and said; "Fill it up.”Because of 'the way he was dressed, it didn't dawn on me that this was a hold-up(持枪抢劫). I was sure it must be a test of the new tellers' ability to follow bank rules. Eager to pass such a test, I coolly opened the bag, and then calmly filled it with marked bills.

None of these!” the man shouted, insisting that I fill the bag with cash from another teller’s drawer. Well, that was a big no-no from training: You never touch another teller's cash! I firmly told him it was against bank rules. You can imagine the disbelief on the robber' s face. Other tellers later told me they couldn't believe I refused the robber's demands.

When the man told me to stand in front of the other staff along the wall, threatening to shoot me if anyone moved, I finally realized this was real. When young, I dreamed of becoming many things. I wished I was an astronaut going up into space, finding new planets and jumping around in a cool space suit. I imagined being a cowboy in the having gun fights and wearing stylish cowboy boots. I pretended to be a famous footballer, using my skills to score lots of goals. I love being able to play the role of somebody, even just for a short time, to try to realize what it might be like to walk in their shoes.

Looking back, I realize that imagination is a wonderful thing. I was able to create entire environments and scenarios (剧情梗概) in my head, using nothing more than my brain, and to be able to adapt things in my everyday surroundings to fit the specific story of the day. Growing up with brothers and sisters also helped, as it meant that even bigger stories could be created, combining our ideas and putting our thoughts into action. It also allowed for more varieties in the story, as sometimes I could be the hero while on other occasions, I would be the bad guy.

One of my all—time favorite memories as a kid was recreating the Indiana Jones character in my back garden. I played the role of Indiana Jones, with my younger sister as my assistant and my brother as the evil man. We used everything in our garden, from the path to the fence, as part of the storyline to create obstacle that needed to be overcome, and we would keep the story going for hours!

My personal favorite was Indiana Jones and the Stolen Easter Eggs, where my brother hid small chocolate eggs around and my sister and I had to find them by answering questions or solving a puzzle. It was difficulty but eventually we found all the eggs and shared them together.

It was a cold March day in High Point, North Carolina. The girls on the Wesleyan Academy softball were waiting for their next turns at bat during practice, stamping their feet to stay warm. Eighth-grader Taylor Bisbee shivered (发抖) a little as she watched her teammate Paris White play. The two didn’t know each other wellTaylor had just moved to town a month or so before.

Suddenly, Paris fell to the ground, “Paris’s eye rolled back,” Taylor says. “She started shaking. I knew it was an emergency.”

It certainly was, Paris had suffered a sudden heart failure. Without immediate medical care, Paris would die. At first, no one moved. The girls were in shock. Then the softball coach shouted out, “Does anyone know CPR?”

CPR is a life-saving technique. To do CPR, you press on the sick person’s chest so that blood moves through the body and takes oxygen to organs. Without oxygen, the brain is damaged quickly.

Amazingly, Taylor had just taken a CPR course the day before. Still, she hesitated. She didn’t think she knew it well enough. But when no one else came forward, Taylor ran to Paris and began doing CPR, “It was scary. I knew it was the difference between life and death,” says Taylor.

Taylor’s swift action helped her teammates calm down. One girl called 911. Two more ran to get the school nurse, who brought a defibrillator, an electronic devices (器械) that can shock the heart back into work. Luck stayed with them: Paris’ heartbeat returned.

“I know I was really lucky,” Paris says now. “Most people don’t survive this. My team saved my life”

Experts say Paris is right. For a sudden heart failure, the single best chance for survival is having someone nearby step in and do CPR quickly.

Today, Paris is back on the softball team. Taylor will apply to college soon. She wants to be a nurse. “I feel more confident in my actions now,” Taylor says. “I know I can act under pressure in a scary situation.”

High-tech machines have made life easier for millions around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here's an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen hamburger in 60 seconds. However,it won't taste as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you're in that much of a hurry, you probably won't take time to toast the bun.High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn't make for better tasting meals.

Most people get their news from high-tech sources like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It's also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs. However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip the rest.

Other high-tech time savers have similar disadvantages. For example, most people use the phone or email to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you don't always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate.Similarly, when you word-process a homework assignment instead of handwriting it,you can check your spelling electronically and put in fancy headings. However, some students are so busy with the computer that they don't pay enough attention to the actual words they are writing.

29.What do we know about high-tech cooking?

A.It can't make much food.                                    B.It is popular with every family.

C.It makes food slower than low-tech cooking.            D.It can't make food as delicious as low-tech cooking.

30.What is an advantage of the news in newspapers compared to that on the Internet?

A.Quick updates.                                                  B.Live news events.

C.Detailed information.                                                D.Convenient news sources.

31.Which of the following proverbs can summarize the text?

A.Easy come,easy go.                                                 B.Better late than never.

C.Every coin has two sides.                                         D.Learn to walk before you run.

Vancouver’s Chinatown—Canada’s largest Chinatown

Vancouver’s Chinatown is North America’s second biggest Chinatown, after San Francisco’s. Mandarin(普通话)and Cantonese are the mother tongues in 30% of Vancouver homes, which makes Chinese the largest “minority” ethnic group(少数民族).

bamboo is one of the nature’s most surprising plants. Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass.

Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese scientist recorded one bamboo plant that grew almost 1.5 meters in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe. There are more than 1,000 kinds of bamboo that grow around the world on both mountains and plains.

Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeters wide while others may grow to more than 30 centimeters across. This plant also comes in different colors, from yellow to black to green.

Many Asian countries have been using bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for building new buildings. As a matter of fact, the cables that hold up the hanging bridge across the Min River in Sichuan are made of bamboo. The bridge has been in use for more than 1,000 years, and is still holding strong.

In Africa, engineers are teaching poor farmers how to find water using bamboo. These African countries need cheap ways to find water because they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water. It seems that bamboo is one of the best things they can use. Bamboo pipes and drills can help to make the poor thirsty fields to be watered.

How hard we have all prayed(祈祷) to grow up quickly, and looked forward to the happy days of being a grown-up and enjoying the many interests that a youth should have.

At last, you have grown up. At least you are no longer a child. They call you “young lady”. You then enjoy the pleasure of being a young lady. You are proud of being a grown-up teenager. People welcome you-this young lady-heartily. You are glad that your prayer has been answered.1111]

But there is always something that troubles you a lot. You say; “Papa and Mama, give me some money please. My pocket money is all gone already.”

“No”, they say, “your age is a dangerous age. If you have too much money to spend, it won’t do you any good.” Then you have to stay at home because you dare not go out with an empty pocket.

Another time you tell your grandma, “Grandma, see, I am a grown-up now.”

“Good, now, you can sit here and knit (编织) this for me while I go and have a rest.” To show that you are no more a child, you have to sit there the whole afternoon doing the work, which only a grown-up can do. After an hour, you find it hard to do, and give the knitting basket back to your grandma. Your grandma criticizes your work. You hear what she says, “Such a big girl can’t do such easy work.” You wish then you were a child again.

But the fact is, you are growing up, and you can’t help it. That’s the way it goes!

The town of Green Bank, West Virginia, is the site of the largest radio telescope in the world, so Internet connections and anything else that can create electromagnetic(电磁的) waves, such as smart phones and microwave ovens, are banned.

Green Bank is frozen in time, somewhere in the 1950s, because there’s a 33,000-square-kilometer zone of silence due to the telescope. Cell phone towers are forbidden.

The closer you get to the telescope, the greater the restrictions. There’s a 16-kilometer radius(半径) around the observatory where radio-controlled items, even toys, cannot be used.

Telescope employees even work in a special room that blocks electromagnetic waves from leaving it. “Here imagine a submarine(潜艇), water cannot get inside, and so this room is an electric submarine. No electromagnetic waves can get into this room, just as you can’t go beyond it,” Michael Holstein, an observatory officer, said.

The size of a football field, the telescope is so sensitive that it could pick up signals sent from an alien world. And scientists can’t wait for that to happen.

“All the signals that we now receive with the help of telescopes are signals that come from cosmic objects — stars, galaxies. We have not yet received anything from intelligent civilizations,” scientist Richard Lynch said.

Local people respect the work of the scientists. “Yes, we are different. Many would say that we live the old-fashioned way, in the past. But for us, it’s just the way of life that we have always lived,” Sherry said.

“When we want to meet friends, we just call each other on a wire phone. And instead of sitting in front of your screen, we talk, we go fishing, to the mountains,” resident Sherry said.

For the latest news, residents read the weekly local newspaper. When she’s looking for a phone number, Sherry reaches for the phone book.

And instead of Facebook, Sherry enjoys daily conversations with her customers. In this town, everyone knows each other and communication is face to face.

8. Why do people in Green Bank live an old-fashioned life?

A. The town is economically less developed.

B. Electronic products will affect the radio telescope.

C. They have got used to it and don’t want to change.

D. The radio telescope stops electronic products working properly.

9. What can we learn about the radio telescope?

A. It was set up about in the 1950s.

B. It is in a room without electromagnet.

C. It is 16-kilometer in radius.

D. It has picked up signals from aliens.

10. How do the local people feel about their life?

A. Inspired.    B. Unhappy.

C. Content.    D. Worried.

11. What can be the best title for the text?

A. High tech with traditional life at Green Bank

B. Radio telescope to receive alien signals

C. The largest radio telescope in the world

D. Old-fashioned life at Green Bank

NBA basketball players devote much of their lives to preparing for games. This preparation, which includes studying game films, practicing skills and treating injuries, is essential because of the pressure-packed nature of their profession.

36 Generally, on the day of a game, players get together in the morning for an-hour shooting and also to review films of the opponent of that night. 37 Players receive treatments for injuries, put on their uniforms, discuss strategies with coaches and warm up during the remaining time before the game gets underway. As thousands of people cheer them on, a team’s best players will play 40 or more minutes during the game. After the game, some players stick around to lift weights before showering and heading home.

38 They must leave their families at home, spend hours on planes traveling around the country and try to stay rested while sleeping at a different hotel every night.

The NBA’s 82-game regular season is tiring. 39 So many players focus on recuperating(恢复健康) for at least part of the off-season. Other players may work on recovering from surgery to correct injuries.

Weeks before the training camp, NBA basketball players start getting back in shape for the upcoming season.40Younger players often take part in developmental leagues during the summer months to increase their chances of getting onto an NBA team.

A.     Trips can be difficult for NBA basketball players

B.     The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946.

C.    It can wear down even the best-conditioned athletes.

D.    It consists of 30 teams, 29 in the US and 1 in Canada.

E.     The preparation may involve practicing basketball skills and lifting weights.

F.     Following lunch, many players take a nap and eat a pre-game meal before arriving at the field.

G.    An NBA basketball player’s typical workday routine varies based on his team’s schedule of games.

“S.H.E. is going to sing at the CCTV annual Spring Festival Evening Party, is that true? ”cried out Peng Weiye, a Senior 2 girl in Shanghai and die-hard S.H.E. fan.

After checking it on the Internet, Peng quickly phoned friends to spread the news. For fans like her, S.H.E.’s performance is perhaps the only part of the old fashioned evening to excited about.

Since I started to work for a   24   company, however, I have done most of my traveling through the Internet. By using the Internet, I have seen the  25  of many cities on my computer screen. And I have really made business   26  , too. With the help of the Internet, I have also got   27   about food in different countries.

Therefore, I was beginning to feel that actual trips were   28   necessary when I happened to read a famous chef's comment on the Internet. He said, “It is very difficult to have real Italian food in a foreign country, because we enjoy food and the  29  around us at the same time. So why don't you fly over to Italy and enjoy real Italian   30 ? “Those words reminded me of my  31  advice. As information technology   32  , you might be able to do without making some real trips. But this also means that you will miss the various   33   you can get from traveling.

Today there are people who   34   direct communication with others and spend much of their time on the Internet. It is not surprising to see a group of people  35  not with each other but into their micro phones. It seems as if such people are  36  by an invisible wall. They seem to be losing out on a good chance to  37   and talk with other people. I do not think that they are taking good advantage of information technology. We should use information technology as a tool to make our daily   38   more fruitful. However, we should never let it   39   our time for face to -face communication. Let's make use of information technology more   40  , and have great fun in experiencing the actual world.
