American Hustle (December 18)
What it's about: Pulling inspiration from the FBI's Abscam operation of the late 1970s, American Hustle is a good combination of criminals and the law in an effort to find out corrupt (腐败的) politicians.
Who it stars: A cast doesn't get much better than this: Bradley Cooper (Richie DiMaso); Christian Bale (Irving Rosenfeld); Amy Adams (Sydney Prosser); Jeremy Renner (politician Carmine Polito); and Jennifer Lawrence (Irving's wife Rosalyn).
The comments: With so many attractive names, American Hustle looks to be all but a success with audiences and critics.

what is a mind map?
A mind map is a graphical representation of topics, or concepts in a radial (放射状的)manner.
36 Mind maps are used to visualize, organize, and classify ideas, making them perfect for study aids,
organizing information , problem solving , writing and making decisions.
7 steps to follow to make a mind map
* 37 why? Because starting in the center gives your brain freedom to spread out in all directions and to express itself more freely and naturally.
* Use an image or picture for your central idea. why? Because each image, like the central image, is also worth a thousand words. 38 It keeps you focused, helps you concentrate, and gives your brain more of a buzz!
* Use colors throughout. Why? Because colors are as exciting to your brain as are images. Colour adds life to your mind map, adds great energy to your creative thinking, and is fun!
*Connect your main branches to the central image and connect your second- and third-level branches to the first and second levels, etc. Why? Because your brain works by association. It likes to link two (or three, or four) things together. 39
* Make your branches curved rather than straight-lined. Why ? because single key words give your mind map more power and flexibility.
* 40 Why? Because an image is worth a thousand words and helps you use your imagination. So if you have only 10 images in your mind map, it’s already equal to 10,000 words of notes!
A. Use images throughout.
B. Start in the center of a blank page.
C. It helps with memory and organization.
D. A mind map is a powerful thinking tool.
E. A central image is more interesting and useful.
F. If you connect the branches, you will understand and remember a lot more easily.
G. It focuses on a central keyword or topic, with other items linked to the central idea.
Many countries follow special customs when a child’s baby teeth fall out. Many of these customs tell stories about animals taking the teeth.
For example, Koreans have the custom of throwing the fallen tooth onto the roof of a house so that a magpie (喜鹊) can take the tooth away and bring a new tooth for the child. This custom is also followed by some other Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam.
Other countries, though, have tooth customs about other animals. In Mexico and Spain, for example, it is thought that a mouse takes a fallen tooth away and leaves some money. But in Mongolia, it is dogs that take children’s teeth away. Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture. It is believed that the new tooth will grow strong if the baby tooth is fed to a dog, so parents in Mongolia will put their children’s fallen teeth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog.
In France and the USA, a child will put a fallen tooth under his or her pillow before going to bed. It is thought that in the early morning, when the child is still sleeping, the Tooth Fairy will take the tooth away and leave something else under the pillow. What she will leave is hard to know. It is said that in France the Tooth Fairy may leave some candies; however, in the United States, she may leave money.

Jessica Westervelt,a Spanish teacher at Bethlehem High School in New York, created an activity called "House Hunters",which was inspired by the popular television show"House Hunters International",for her Spanish class about four years ago.
Similar to the show, students work in groups, pretending to be real house agents, and look for three houses in Spanish-speaking countries. She uses the activity to teach vocabulary related to the home, chores, travel and vacation. Yellowstone Weather
Yellowstone National Park is at high altitude. Most of the park is above 7500 feet (2275 meters).
Yellowstone’s weather is unpredictable. In summer, it may be warm and sunny with temperatures in the high 70s. At night in any given month, the temperature may drop close to freezing. So it is best to come prepared for cold evenings and mornings, especially if you are camping or hiking. When you leave your campsite, please leave it prepared for possible thundershowers and wind.
A sunny warm day may become fiercely stormy with wind, rain, sleet and sometimes snow. Without enough clothing, an easy day hike or boat trip can turn into a battle for survival.

People have been painting pictures for at least 30,000 years. The earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animals. They used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill. Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. No one knows why they were painted there. Perhaps the painter thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals. Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures.
About 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as a kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet(字母表).
The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture-writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures are like modern comic-strip (连环漫画) stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. But, for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it. 111.Com]
By the year 1,000 BC, people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign, or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letter of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and Roman alphabet is now used all over the world.
These days, we can write down a story, or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds: drawings, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find them everywhere: in books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work. Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can make a story much more interesting.

Our “Mommy and Me” time began two years ago. My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride their bikes up and down. “I wish I could take one of my children out alone,” said Christie.
Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I’ll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine, I’ll take someone out.
The children were extremely quick to accept the idea of “Mommy and Me” time. Christie’s daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with tons of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. “She’s like a different child when there’s no one else around,” Christie shared with me quickly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn’t have to make an effort to gain attention.
Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children during our alone times. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering (口吃的) son, Tom, doesn’t stutter once during our activities since he doesn’t have to struggle for a chance to speak. And the other son, Sam, who’s always a follower when around other children shines as a leader during our times together.
The “Mommy and Me” time allows us to be simply alone and away with each child —talking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves to be an only child at least once in a while.

C. The boys become better followers. D. Tom has less difficulty in speaking.
11. The author seems to believe that ___________.
A. having brothers and sisters is fun B. it’s tiring to look after three children
C. every child needs parents’ full attention D. parents should watch others’ children
When I was a child, I hoped to live in the city. I think I would be happy there. Now I am living in a city ,but I miss my home in countryside. There the air is clean or the mountains are green. Unfortunately, on the development of industrialization, the environment has been polluted. Lots of studies have been shown that global warming has already become a ver y seriously problem. The airs we breathe in is getting dirtier and dirtier. Much rare animals are dying out . We must found ways to protect your environment. If we fail to do so ,we’ll live to regret it .

Vancouver’s Chinatown—Canada’s largest Chinatown
Vancouver’s Chinatown is North America’s second biggest Chinatown, after San Francisco’s. Mandarin(普通话)and Cantonese are the mother tongues in 30% of Vancouver homes, which makes Chinese the largest “minority” ethnic group(少数民族).
Vancouver’s Chinatown is the place to visit for a taste of Chinese culture.1111]
In Chinatown, there are a lot of traditional products and buildings, such as the stone lions which represent for the prestige(名声;声望),many red lanterns which stands for the happiness. What’s more interesting, in Chinatown, a typical Suzhou garden can be found. Chinatown not only expresses the culture of China to the other cultures, but also one part shows that Vancouver is the multicultural society. Chinatown which carries many Chinese cultures is built by Chinese in Vancouver. In the beginning, Chinatown was the community only for Chinese people, but nowadays, more and more other people from different countries are willing to know the Chinatown. It is the part of the Vancouver’s society, and Chinatown is also changing gradually in order to adjust to Vancouver.
There are lots of interesting markets with many varieties of fresh and dried seafood and mushrooms in the Chinatown. You’ll also find cheap and fine house ware and traditional Chinese medicine. During the summer, on weekend evenings, Keefer and Pender Streets become a busy open-air night market. If you have enough time for a meal, try at one of the many small restaurants. It is not an expensive, multi-course culinary(烹调的)adventure. Relax in the peaceful Dr. Sun Yat-Sen(孙中山)Classical Chinese Garden, or just steps on Pender Street. When I brush my teeth each morning, I see my tongue, and feel slightly amazed that it’s going to be insured(投保) for £1 million. I had never really paid much attention to it until I became a baby-food tester. Now, my tongue---or rather, its ability to determine tiny changes in flavor ---is the primary tool of my job. The company I work for believes I’m so valuable in terms of getting the balance of tastes in baby food just right that it’s worth getting insured.
I’m what you call a “supertaster” ---one of a small percentage of the population born with twice as many taste buds(味蕾) as the rest. Babies are typically born with more than 10,000 taste buds, but in later life they decrease to as few as 5,000. At 24 I should really be at the height of my tasting power.
At first, baby food tasted strange to me---it took a while to get used to eating a meal that had been reduced to a paste(糨糊). Also, I have to make a real effort to think like a baby---to imagine that each time I put a spoonful of pie in my mouth, I am six months old again. I still avoid tasting baby fish pie after breakfast.
I am more aware of the need to protect my tongue these days, particularly before a tasting session, and to avoid any strong tastes or smells, such as coffee and perfume. I also drink plenty of water during the day to clean my palate(味觉).
It’s not really something that affects my personal life. Outside work it’s a joy to be able to taste everything so deeply. One consequence is that eating is a much richer experience for me than for most people. If I take one bite of a salad, I can tell immediately what’s in the dressing. I like the challenge of guessing what’s in anything I eat, and the satisfaction of rarely getting it wrong.
24. The reason why the author is being insured is that _________.
A. few people have his tasting power
B. he manages valuable assets for his company
C. baby-food testers’ taste buds are easily injured
D. he makes well-balanced meals for babies
25. The author is a good baby-food tester because he ____.
A. is good at making baby food
B. has more taste buds

DON’T OVERSHARE ONLINE
Internet users can let their guard down when chatting with strangers on social media, letting slip their names, family details, workplace addresses and job titles to their new “friends”. Some parents even share photos of their children online, forgetting to hide details that can disclose their names, schools or where they live.
AVOID ONLINE SURVEYS
Some questionnaires try to attract people with small rewards or a chance to take part in a “lucky draw”. But to qualify, people must fill in their names, phone numbers and home addresses. Check the website where the survey is being hosted and consider whether it’s reliable.
KEEP ONLINE RESUMES BRIEF

Some job site operators even require applicants to list their family members’ information. China’s Ministry of Public Security says people should give only the information necessary.
