Patience is of great importance in our daily life. Once I waited a bus to come at a stop. 30 minutes past, but no bus came. Both upset and annoyed, I decided to walk on feet. But no sooner had I left when the bus arrived. I thought if I had waited for one more minute, I would have caught it. If I chose to take a next bus, I would have to wait for other 30 minutes. Only then do I realize my problem. Being impatient will possible waste all the effort that we have put it in. Now whenever I am close to lose my patience, I’ll think of this experience.

Alexis, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad's car. She let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. “Dad, there's a deer there!” Alexis said. It was a male deer with sharp antlers () on each side of its head.

As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the deer's head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer's head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and edged closer. “I knew I was in trouble,” Sue says. She went to pick up a stick for self-defense, and the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue could feel blood flew down her leg. Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road.

When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. Alexis looked into the woman's terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer. "I was kicking it to get its attention," she says. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the women.

Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then applied a piece of cloth to Sue's injured leg. “We’re going to get you to a hospital,” Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer’s head and neck, but the blows didn’t scare it away. “I was losing faith,” she says. “A couple more strikes, Alexis,” said her father. “You can do it.”

Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer's neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away. Alexis got in the driver's seat and sped toward the nearest hospital.

After Sue was treated, she tearfully thanked her rescuers. “You expect a teenage girl to get on the phone and call for help,” she says, “not to beat up a deer.”

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are in the mountains, in the waves, or on grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses in good condition. This causes major environmental problems. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoor, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 12 WORDS.)

As we know, it was not easy for J.K Rowling to create Harry Potter. The idea for Harry Potter come to her while she was on a delayed train between Manchester and London. She wrote down her ideas on the back of envelope. She then continued to add flesh for the bones of the first Harry Potter story. During her creation, she had the extra burden of look after her baby and had to write with hand for a lack of typewriter. It was only in 1997 she completed the first Harry Potter story. After the first book, the success of each of the following titles was automatically. The fifth book sold about seven million copies the day when it was published. What makes the books so important are that they create a special literary bond between parents and children. In addition, much to the pleasant of the schoolchildren, Harry Potter has even become part of the school curriculum.

A recent study suggested that taking a bottle of water into the exam hall could help students improve their grades.

According to the study those who brought drinks,  71  (especial) water, with them when sitting their exams performed up to 10 percent better than those who did not.

Comparing their exam results with their normal schoolwork grades, scientists then found that all those who  72    (bring) drinks with them got better grades   73    between 2 and 10 percent.

It is unclear  74    drinking water improves exam results. But scientists say having enough water in our bodies and not feeling thirsty could have a   75  helpeffect on our brains. Drinking water may also cut   76    on anxiety, 77   has a bad effect on exam performances.

Whatever the explanation, it is obvious that students should try hard to keep enough water in their bodies during exams. So next time,    78    you are going to have a big exam, try  79   (bring) a bottle of water with you. Who knows — it   80  help you pass the exam!

It is important to introduce yourself in a creative, memorable way to distinguish yourself from the crowd.    56   . Since being witty(言辞诙谐的) doesn’t always come easily, try one of these creative introductions and separate yourself from the rest.

Write your first or last name on a piece of paper.    57   . So if your name is Tom, you might say you are tireless, optimistic and mild.

58   . Then say that you will do so in the words of yourbest and worst critic— your mother. By breaking the ice in this way, you can go on in either a humorous or serious fashion.

Introduce yourself silently, by drawing a picture of yourself on a large sheet of paper.    59   . In fact, in some situations, it may be better if you don’t. Put a title at the top of your drawing, if you like, such as Hello! This is me.

Turn the traditional introduction upside down by describing yourself in exactly opposite terms of who you are. Have fun with thisback door approach, and keep people guessing just how much you are exaggerating(夸张).    60   . Don’t bother calling me tomorrow, because I will be hiding in a closet. Send text messages to my girlfriend while I drink a Bud Light on the job.

A. This introduction requires you to be gifted in art.

B. Freely admit that you don’t like talking about yourself.

C. It doesn’t matter whether you have artistic abilities or not.

D. For example: I am probaby the laziest person you will ever meet.

E. Use each letter as the first letter in an adjective that describes you.

F. Bring in the surprise factor— sometimes known as the shock factor.

G. After all, anybody can stand up and announce their name, business title and job responsibilities.

Some people are pessimistic (悲观的) when they think about the future. They say that, a hundred years from now, we will have used most of the earth's resources. We will have polluted our seas badly, and be unable to eat fish from them. We will have made the air so dirty that we will need to wear masks. The world's population will have doubled, and we will have used all the countryside for housing; there will be no farmland left.

Other people believe that Man adapts very easily. They have a different idea of the future. How, in their views, will people be living in a hundred years' time?

One architect believes that Man will move off the land. He suggests that the city of the future will be a huge, pyramidshaped building, which will be floating on the surface of the sea. About 5,000 families will be living there, and the building will contain shops and schools as well as homes. By living on the sea, we will give the farmers more land to grow crops.

As for oil, people will no longer need it: we will be heating our homes with power from the sun. And we will not be short of minerals, because there are plenty under our oceans. At the moment, we do not have the technology to get them out. But, in a hundred years' time, the optimists say, the new sea cities will be using these resources.

What will be in the shops in the year 3000? What will people be wearing? How will people be traveling?

Scientists who make predictions about the future suggest that, by the year 3000, shops will no longer exist. Computers will have replaces them; and people will order goods from home.

People will be wearing very light, thin clothes. By this time, scientists will have invented a fabric that keeps us cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.

As for travel, the experts say that most people will be using public transport. Electric cars will be traveling through the streets day and night. Anybody will be able to stop one and use it.

An interesting picture. Unfortunately, we will not be there to see if these predictions come true.

29Pessimists believe that in the future ________.

Athe seas and oceans will be full of houses

Bwe'll have used up all the resources

Cwe will not have enough fish to eat from the seas

Dwe will have polluted the air so badly that it will be impossible for us to breathe

30Optimists suggest that ________.

Aall the land will be too polluted to be cropped on

Bpyramids will be the most commonlyused houses

Cpeople will be using the power from the sun instead of oil

Dwe will be short of materials even though we get them from under the oceans

31Scientists have made the predictions EXCEPT  ________.

Aelectric cars will be going along the streets continuously

Bthe resources under the oceans will never be used up

Cpeople will order from home

Dpeople won't suffer from cold any longer

Meet the amazing Eliot Schrefer, and see why we’re big fans!

Scope: Why do you write stories about animals?

Eliot: I’ve always been excited by animal stories. When I was young, I liked reading about animals because they seemed like they needed help, and they were also voiceless.

Scope: Where did you get the idea for Animal Distress Calls?

Eliot: Many years ago, I had a friend who worked as a doctor at the Bronx Zoo. One evening he invited me to see the zoo after hours. Wandering that still, dark zoo was haunting. I was imagining adventures with big wild animals, but only the wolves were awake. Then he took me into the clinic, where I met a sick bird. That nighttime visit clearly had a big impact on this story.

Scope: Why did you leave Josie’s fate ambiguous in the story Animal Distress Calls?

Eliot: So many of us have known a creature, human or nonhuman, who’s been suffering. Sometimes everything gets better, and sometimes it doesn’t. That doesn’t change the important, compassionate act of caring. I didn’t want the story to become about the outcome of Josie’s illness. I wanted it to be about the sympathy Josie and Julia share for each other.

Scope: Have you had a personal experience with an animal that changed you?

Eliot: I had a moment during research for my ape novels when I was staying at a bonobo sanctuary in Congo. I’d have breakfast with Oshwe, a young bonobo who was too little to eat with the rest of the group. Sitting with him for a few hours each morning, I helped make sure that he finished his meal and got the nutrition he needed---but it also felt like a gift he was giving me. Oh, I remember thinking, you’re spending this precious morning time with me!

28. What is Eliot Schrefer famous for according to the text?

   A. Being an animal doctor             B. His special bond with animals

   C. His amazing animal stories          D. Being a volunteer taking care of animals

29. What was Eliot Schrefer surprised by while visiting the Bronx Zoo?

A. The quiet atmosphere             B. The active wolves

C. His friend’s behavior              D. The violent wild animals

30. Why did Eliot Schrefer leave Josie’s fate ambiguous?

A. Because he thought it was not important

B. Because he wanted readers to make a guess

C. Because he wanted to attract readers’ attention

D. Because he would make it clear in his next story

31. What was Eliot Schrefer’s attitude towards Oshwe?

   A. Proud            B. Frightened       C. Disappointed         D. Appreciative

In a recent report, a new plan of offers a road map to the U.S. to reduce food waste by 20% within a decade while also creating thousands of jobs and could save consumers billions of dollars.

The report, which comes just months after a federal(联邦政府的)action aimed at cutting food waste by 50% by 2030, offers a 27-point list of ways to address the problem.

One of the three categories of food waste solutions is prevention. The measures put forward in the report mainly center on preventing food waste in the first place. The report suggests food companies should adjust packaging to discourage waste. Portions(一份的量)should be smaller and packaging should be designed to prevent food from going bad. Distributors, those who supply shops and companies with food, should use new technology to reduce food waste during transport. Prevention methods would help save roughly $8 billion and prevent 2.6 million tons of food from being wasted, according to the report.

Recovery solutions focus on new methods of taking food that would otherwise be thrown away and using it for other purposes before it goes bad. The report also recommends providing tax encouragement for people who donate food to the poor, softening regulations on food donations and processing food to prolong its life.

The report also encourages recycling solutions — recycling food once it is no longer edible.

Food waste causes a lot of related problems from food insecurity to climate change. At present an average American household of four wastes more than two million calories of food every year. At the same time, other American families remain food-insecure and rely on cheap and unhealthy food. Carbon dioxide produced in the process of growing crops and raising animals such as cows and sheep also speeds up global warming. Nearly 10% of the greenhouse gas in the U.S. relates to agriculture, according to a report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Problems connected with food waste are only expected to become more serious in coming years as the global population grow quickly and climate change reduces crop production. Crop production in some areas of the world faces a nearly 20% reduction thanks to climate change.

The new report offers a path to approaches to meeting the federal government food waste goal. The government action — called for by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture  — offered high ambition but few important details.

“Let’s feed people,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy announcing the goal, “Not landfills.”

62. We can learn from the passage that the report suggests ___________.

   A. reducing food waste to half of its present level in 2030

   B. advancing packaging for convenience during transport

   C. adjusting portions to prevent food from being wasted

   D. working out new direct trade routes for distributors

63. Which of the following can be viewed as a recovery solution?

   A. Reusing food that cannot be eaten any more.

   B. Making dog food out of unpopular human food.

   C. Giving quality food to school children for free.

   D. Taxing those who don’t wasted food at a lower rate.

64. Which of the following may be the direct cause of reduction in crop production?

   A. Growing population.    B. Food waste.      C. Climate change.        D. Food insecurity.

   A. debatable                    B. imperfect           C. helpful                            D. ambitious

My daughter’s cheeks had never looked so rosy. Never before had she tried out a sauna (桑拿). In Britain, anyone under six years old isn’t encouraged to do such things. In Finland, there’s one sauna for every three people.

We had never thought about coming to Finland before, and hadn’t actually heard of Tampere, the country’s third largest city. It’s actually less than two and a half hours away by plane, and has a population of 200,000. The Finns are now advertising Tampere as the perfect place for an all-year round holiday. We arrived to be greeted by a beautiful blanket of snow on the ground, but in the summer it’s hot, very green and perfect for outdoor trips.

The city is small and pretty, with some beautiful churches, good museums and various kinds of souvenir shops. Shopping centers include a charming Christmas market and nearby in Lempaala, the Ideapark, with more than 100 stores and a great children’s activity center where you can leave the kids and shop until you are content.

There is also a fine choice of restaurants and the woods are just a short drive away. There are also 3.000 lakes in the Tampere, with 200 of them inside the city limits. This makes for some truly amazing scenery, which may even be better viewed in summer: the December days are short and not particularly bright.

Our trip was packed with activities which would attract families---and that included two trips to a sauna which was in the middle of the woods, at Villa Amanda, around an hour away from the city center. It is a beautiful, traditional Finnish house, located on a lake which was half-iced over when we arrived---and easily suitable for a couple of families to rent. We drank wine and admired the views before trying out the villa’s personal sauna, which my daughter enjoyed so much that she had to be dragged away from.

21. Why did the author’s daughter look so rosy?

A. Because she had drunk wine.

B. Because she was a little shy.

C. Because she had just come out of a sauna.

D. Because she was a little frozen.

22. The Ideapark is a place where       .

A. customers can have a good dinner and shopping

B. children can enjoy themselves while their parents can shop freely

C. travelers can enjoy a short drive in the woods

D. there are many shops, museums and churches.

23. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The author’s daughter has already turned six years old.

B. The travelers will have a better time if they visit the city in winter.

C. Villa Amanda is an expensive restaurant in the city.

D. There are many beautiful lakes in Tempere.

24. What does the passage mainly tell us?

A. A winter trip to Finland.

B. Different kinds of food in Finland.

C. The popularity of saunas in Finland

D. Development of Finnish tourism

Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class, after class, and at lunch. Students with cars buy large speakers and play the music loudly as they drive on the street.

Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, and the life of American people. Most of the radio programs are music.

Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in many places. Once the popular singer is heard all over the country, young people buy his or her tapes. Some of the money from these tapes goes to the singer. Wherever the singer goes, all the young people want to meet him or her. Now the singer has become a national star.

There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk music. It tells stories about the common life of Americans. Another is called western or country music. This is started by cowboys who would sing at night to the cows they were watching.
