Suddenly, he began to regret his behavior in the morning, but thought he would never be selfish again.

Although travelers can try dishes from around China and the globe in well-known food cities like Beijing and Shanghai, it is outside these major metropolises where a world of exciting Chinese cuisine(中国菜) awaits the true foodie(美食家). With this in mind and after three years of living in China and writing about Chinese food, I started a six-month journey with my husband and two daughters.

Here are four of the eight most amazing Chinese food cities I’ve come across so far. The list is in no particular order. 1. Chengdu, Sichuan Province

Crowned as Asia’s first UNESCO City of Gastronomy(美食学) in 2010, Chengdu is best-known for its fiery hot pot and spicy dishes, which are characterized by the use of Sichuan pepper and are usually layered with salty, sour and sweet flavors. There are also dishes that aren’t spicy at all, such as beer-braised duck.

Hot pot is as ubiquitous in the city as the smell of chili. At Zigong Delicious Hotpot, the house specialty(招牌菜) tiaoshui wa is a cauldron(大锅) of fiery chili(辣椒) to which vegetables, noodles or other meats can be added.

For a real taste of Sichuan’s signature招牌pepper, hua jiao, spend a morning at the Chengdu Spice Market where the locals sell and buy it by the sack.

2. Lanzhou, Gansu Province

Synonymous in the minds of food-lovers with hand-pulled beef noodles, Lanzhou also has one of the liveliest street food night markets in China.

Just west of the city center, the buzzing Zhengning Road bazaar集市houses more than 100 street food stalls. Available is a broad selection of hot and cold dishes with emphasis on local Hui cuisine.

No trip to Lanzhou is complete without feasting on noodles at Wumule Penhui, the 2012 winners of Lanzhou’s annual pulled noodle competition. The halal restaurant makes noodles spicy enough to satisfy even the most hardened heat-seekers.

3. Guangzhou, Guangdong Province

The birthplace of Cantonese food, Guangzhou is thought by many as the best place to eat in China. The city of 12 million has a passionate food culture, with equal excitement reserved for the opening of a hole-in-the-wall congee joint粥店and a high-end restaurant.

The local cuisine is characterized by fresh clean flavors口味, seafood, barbecued meats and the wonderful tradition of yum cha, which is tea drinking accompanied by dumplings and small dishes.

Congee is the way locals love to start their day, and one of the most popular vendors is Ru Xuan Sha Guo Zhou. Here, one can get a bowl of signature seafood congee any hour of the day.

Roast meats are Bing Sheng’s most popular order—their roast goose is marinated腌制with five-spice, boiled, air-dried, then roasted by a flame oven to give a crisp skin.

For something more home style and removed from the madness of downtown, head to Ji Cun for steamed chicken and simple farmer-style dishes.

4. Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province

This ancient canal city is home to huangjiu, an amber-colored rice wine that’s important in Chinese cooking.

Open since 1894, the dining chain is known by almost every Chinese for its appearance in early 20th century novels by Chinese literati Lu Xun.

Xianheng’s delicacies佳肴include crispy-skinned chicken, smoked red dates in rice wine, beans flavored with fennel(茴香), and crispy bream in rice wine.

Fried fermented发酵的tofu is also a local specialty, which is available all over town at small street stalls including one just outside Xianheng.

47. The underlined word “ubiquitous” can be replaced by ____________.

   A. charming and attractive                  B. smelly and disgusting

C. common and popular                    D. fiery and spicy

Weather experts said this year could be one of the strongest EL Nino events in recorded history. El Nino means severe weather conditions in parts of the world. In eastern Africa, for example, Kenya and Uganda are preparing for possible flooding. Yet South Africa and Malawi are already dealing with extremely dry weather.

El Nino is Spanish for “the child”. It usually begins in December, near the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. In fact, the weather event was named in his honor. El Nino develops when winds off the west coast of South America weaken. This permits warm water in the western Pacific to expand toward the east and the Americas. At the same time, clouds and rain over the warm water move east, too. El Nio conditions normally appear only about twice every 10 years. Usually, El Nino conditions continue for about 12 to 18 months. They bring warm weather to some areas. These areas become wetter than normal, while others become drier.

The United Nations Children’s Fund warns that many people are at risk from hunger, disease and water shortages resulting from El Nino. In the east and southern Africa up to 11 million children could be affected. East African countries usually experience heavy rainfall during the El Nino. Southern Africa usually has little rainfall which may lead to wildfires or drought(干旱).

Weather changes caused by El Nino depend on the strength of the condition. In the early 1980s, strong El Nino was linked to dry weather in Australia and Asia, rain and flooding in South America and high temperatures in many parts of the U.S. The years later, smaller El Nino caused trouble in parts of the U.S. It caused severe floods in the Southeast and the Middle West. Tom Di Leberto is a meteorologist(气象学家) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington, D.C. He said this year could be the third strongest El Nino on record. But we will not know for sure until all the weather records are examined.

12. The author writes the text to tell us_________.

A. many countries are preparing for the coming floods

B. Africa will probably suffer a lot form this year’s El Nino

C. this year could be one of the strongest El Nino on record

D. 11 million children could be affected by this year’s El Nino

A. what El Nino actually means

B. how El Nino comes into being

C. when El Nino will occur next time

D. why El Nino causes weather changes

14. Which of the following countries often suffers from flooding caused by El Nino?

A. Kenya    B. Malawi

C. Australia    D. South Africa

15. The author mentioned the 1980s’ El Nino and the 1990s’ El Nino to ______ .

A. explain why so many countries were affected by El Nino

B. prove weather changes caused by El Nino depend on its strength

C. argue that El Nino conditions usually appear about twice every 10 years

D. show scientists doubt whether this year will have the strongest El Nino

It was a city in Hubei Province. On International Children’s Day, some orphans(孤儿) from the Wuhan Welfare Institute for Children ___61___(take) to the park. An elderly westerner was with them. The children love the man very much and call ___62___ Grandpa without doubt. This man was Professor William Dorrity, from Florida, the USA. In 2003, ___63___ Professor William Dorrity and his wife retired, they came to Wuhan and started to work as volunteers at the Welfare Institute.

The Dorrities said “we love China and we love children, ___69___ we are happy to do this. ___70___(Hope), there will be more people to give their love to those children.”

I am Henry Jekyll. I was born in the 1800s. I inherited(继承) a large fortune, a healthy body and an excellent mind. I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job. So the outside world saw a serious, hard-working, successful doctor. Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild, fun-loving, irresponsible young man. Both of them were me. They lived together in the same body.

“Was it possible,” I wondered, “to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?”

After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer. I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug. At last I got everything ready.

Late one night, I mixed everything together and prepared my drug. I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely, I drank every bitter drop.

I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place. Wild thoughts danced through my mind—the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. “If this is pure evil,” I thought, “I like it.”

I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I was shorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room, I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.

At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side. Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man. I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men. Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde’s eyes. I felt no dislike, however. Indeed, I welcomed him. Edward Hyde was me, young and strong and full of life.

21. In others’ eyes, the writer was ______.

A. wild and successful                                        B. fun-loving and responsible

C. quiet and irresponsible                                   D. serious and hard-working

22. The writer wanted to find a drug to ______.

A. discover the right mixture of chemicals            B. create separate bodies for both sides

C. observe the change of the chemicals                D. make himself smaller but stronger

23. From the passage we can learn that the writer ______.

A. felt quite delighted right after taking the drug

B. preferred kind Henry to pure evil Edward

C. was very sick of the shorter Edward Hyde

D. was satisfied with both of his bodies

Making words shorter is a common habit of English speakers today.

It seems that most sayings or popular words have their own abbreviation. 36.        For example, LOL stands for “laughing out loud”IMO is “in my opinion” and BTW is “by the way”. US technology website Lifewire made a list of the most common abbreviations in 2016.

Simple ones you may already know - like BTW, IMO and IDK (I don’t know) made the list. 37.        They include TFW (that feeling when), and FTW (for the win). TFW is sometimes used along with a funny photo to describe your feelings, while FTW is a kind of internet cheer used to express happiness. 38.        You can use this one before you tell someone what you think about something.

39.        Terry Wood, a foreign language teacher from Leonardtown, US, says the habits have lowered his students’ writing abilities. “They do not capitalize (大写) words or use punctuation anymore,” Wood told US News. “40.

A. The list is meant to be good fun.

B. Another interesting learn is IMHO (in my humble opinion).

C. But there were lots of other more difficult ones on the list, too.

D. This happens a lot when they are used on social media or in a text message.

E. Any word longer than one syllable (音节) is now abbreviated to one.

F. Researchers identified several ways in which teens changed language while speaking online.

G. However, some people believe these abbreviations are also causing problems.

Today’s workplace is unique in history. Never before have we seen people working together who represent such different backgrounds and experiences. This difference of age, race, gender, and work style makes it very difficult to organize and run a company.

As a result, companies are looking for individuals who can manage a wide range of employees effectively. Increasingly, managers are discovering that age differences among workers are a major cause of concern.

This has been an important realization. The management difficulties and challenges have led some experts to study intergenerational differences for an understanding of problems in the workplace. What they have discovered is interesting and may provide ways of improving working conditions in companies that employ individuals from different generations.

The first thing to realize, they say, is that differences of opinion about the importance of work and how to get work done are not a coincidence. That is, it is not an accident that young employees will be different from older employees. In fact, if employers do not pay attention to these differences, it is possible that anger will build up between people and lead to difficulties in the company.

Resentment (仇恨) between members of different generations, if not attended to, can lead to extreme anger and unhappiness and even lasting enmity if people are not careful. That individuals from different generations should come to view each other as if they were from different sides of warring countries should not be surprising.

It is natural for individuals from the same generation to form alliances (联盟), to come together for protection. Different generations represent different experiences in life, and these lead naturally to different opinions about oneself and one’s approaches to work.

If you were raised in a time of plenty, when products were readily available and relatively inexpensive, you would believe that prosperity is natural and expectable. If, on the other hand, you were raised in a time of scarcity, you would always be careful not to waste things for fear you would not have enough. You would make angry people who seem to believe that problems will always solve themselves. Such optimism in the face of difficulties would be a source of unhappiness between you and them. It is difficult, in such circumstances, to achieve a happy, agreeable atmosphere in the workplace.

32. According to the experts, employers should realize ______ if they want to avoid anger

between employees.

A. the different understanding of problems in the workplace

B. the different views on value of work and working methods

C. the different genders of employees in the workplace

D. the different ways of expressing anger in the company

33. The word “enmity” is closet in meaning to ______.

A. hatred                 B. sorrows            C. ignorance                 D. forgiveness

34. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Employees in some companies regard each other as mere enemies.

B. Employees’ attitudes towards life are related to the time when they grow up.

C. Employees who are raised in a time of scarcity tend to be angry with others.

D. Achieving a harmonious atmosphere in the workplace is the main task for employers.

35. What does the writer mainly talk about in the passage?

A. Employees should be cooperative and friendly with each other.

B. It is difficult for employers to have workers work in a friendly way.

C. The weakness of human nature causes the anger between employees.

D. The generational differences cause the disharmony among employees.

What is the difference between happy people and unhappy people?  36   Read the following list of things that HAPPY people do differently from UNHAPPY people and you will know.

Well, I can tell you surely that those people who are really happy, fear less and love a lot more. They see each moment, each challenge(挑战), each person as an opportunity(机会) to discover more about themselves and the world around them.   37

Happy people understand that you can’t really change a situation(境况) by resisting(反抗)it. But they can feel better by understanding that there might be a reason.   38  But , they ask themselves questions like: What can I learn from this? How can I make this better? They always seem to be pleasant and hopeful no matter .

They do the things they do because of the meaning it brings into their lives and because they get a sense of purpose by doing so.

39   They care more about living a life full of meaning rather than, what in our modern society we would call, living a successful life. The fact here is that most of the time they get both, success and meaning, just because they choose to focus on doing the things they love the most.

40   They make sure that their actions bring meaning and happiness in the lives of many. They look for ways to give and to share the best of themselves with the world and to make other people happy.

A. They have an ideal(理想的) living and a balanced life.

B. What are these two kinds of people do differently?

C. They are kind to themselves and others and they understand the power of love.

D. The things happy people do are not for themselves, but for the good of others.

E. They are ready to embrace (拥抱)everything in front of them.

F. They understand that “Doing what you love is the most important for living a full life”.

G. When something unpleasant happens to them, they don’t try to fight it, bacause this will make the situation even worse.

Peugeot is a French car maker originally founded in 1810, before the automobile was invented. Currently, Peugeot is one of the Europe’s most popular car brands, and the company sells several types of cars with the city driver in mind.

One of the most important parts of any vehicle’s interior is the floor mats. Even though we routinely overlook these seemingly insignificant parts of our cars, the tact is that floor mats help protect our cars and keep them looking new for years. Without protective floor mats, your car will quickly pick up dirt from your shoes and cargo. And this debris (碎)will eventually get into the fibers of the carpeting and decorations. After some time, this dirt will be very  difficult to remove, causing permanent damage to the vehicles.

However with tailored (定做的)Peugeot car mats, you can protect your car's interior and maintain its  value for a longer period of time. Tailored Peugeot car mats are designed  specifically for your vehicles, meaning that they will fit perfectly into the carpeted areas. Not only will this protect your cars from dirt, but they will also make the inside  of your vehicles look more beautiful. Nearly two years ago, Lauren Kornacki, a recent college graduate, walked outside her family’s home in Glen Allen, Virginia, USA, to ask her dad if she could use his car. As she rounded the corner from the front yard into the garage, Lauren, then 23, saw her father, Alec, was lying under the 1995 BMW and unable to move. The car had fallen off the jack (a piece of equipment used to lift a car) while he was doing repair work under it.

Lauren shouted inside to her mother to call an ambulance, and then ran to the car. “I thought, I’m going to lose my dad,” she says. Unsure of what to do, she immediately stuck both hands under the wheel hub(轮毂) where Alec had removed the tyre and pulled up with all her strength. To her surprise, she lifted the car. Then she held it up with one arm and, with the other, pulled her father out from under the car by his trouser leg.

Alec wasn’t breathing, so Lauren began performing chest compressions (胸外心脏按压). Within seconds, Alec took a breath and opened his eyes. “Stay with me,” Lauren said to her dad as they waited for the ambulance. “Just keep breathing.” Two months later, Alec was able to return to his job. Lauren, now a computer engineer, says she didn’t stop to think. “Everyone has a basic instinct(本能) to help the ones they love,” she says.
