Last Wednesday, we were having our English class when a teacher suddenly slipped and fell. We are all worried about him. One of the boy carried him on the back, with the help of some others, to the clinic immediate. It turned out that her right leg was broken but he had to stay in hospital. The following day, we went to visit him with flowers and fruit. Seen him lying in bed with his leg wrapped in bandages, so we felt sorry for him and hoped that he would recover soon. This Thursday, he returned the class on a wheelchair to give us lessons. We were all deeply moved and proud with having such a responsible teacher.
Once there was a man who liked to eat mangoes(芒果). One day he decided to get the sweetest mango from the very top of the tree. Mangoes which are exposed to the sun the most are the sweetest.
So he climbed up to the top, where the branches were thin. He managed to pick up a few sweet reddish fruits, but, in an attempt to climb down, he slipped and started falling towards the ground. Fortunately, he caught the branch as he was falling and remained helplessly hanging on the tree. Then he started to call nearby villagers for help. They immediately came with a ladder and sticks, but could do little to help him.
Then after some time one calm and thoughtful person arrived ---- a well-known sage who lived in a simple hut nearby. People were very curious to see what he would do, as he was famous in solving many people’s problems in the area and sometimes very complicated ones. He was silent for a minute and then picked up a stone and threw it at the hanging man.
Everybody was surprised. The hanging mango lover started to shout, “ What are you doing?! Are you crazy? Do you want me to break my neck?” The sage was silent. Then he took another stone and threw it at the man. The man was very angry, “If I could just come down, I would show you!”
That’s what everybody wanted ---- that he came down. But how? Now everybody was tense(紧张), as to what would happen next! Some wanted to punish the sage, but they didn’t. The sage picked another stone and threw it again at the man, even more forcefully. Now the man on the tree was enraged and developed a great determination to come down and take revenge(报仇).
He then used all his skill and strength and somehow reached the branches which were safe to start going down. And he made it! Everybody was amazed.
However, the rescued man found the sage gone. He stood there, realizing that the man really helped him because he induced him to try his best and save himself.
“I should be thankful and not angry.”

I wasn’t sure what this work involved, but it must have been exciting because the Lab itself was exciting. Anywhere we didn’t go often was exciting.
We would get there in a heavy wooden rowboat, built in the five-house village half a mile away --- our mother would row, she was quite good at it --- or by following a twisty, winding footpath, over fallen trees and around rocks. It was too far for us to walk and our legs were too short, so mostly we went in the rowboat.
The Lab was made of wood; it seemed huge, though in the two photographs of it that survive it looks like a small house. Inside it there were things we weren’t allowed to touch – bottles containing a dangerous liquid in which young white insects floated, their six tiny front legs held together like praying fingers, and plugs that smelled like poison and plates with dried insects. All of this was so forbidden which made us confused.
At the Lab we could hide in the ice house, a dark and secret place that was always bigger on the inside than it was on the outside, where there was a silence, and a lot of sawdust(木屑) to keep the blocks of ice cool.
What did we do in there There was nothing to actually do. We’d pretended we had disappeared suddenly – that nobody knew where we were. This in itself was strangely energetic. Then we’d come out, away from the silence, back into the pine-needle fragrance and the sound of waves beating against the shore, and our mother’s voice calling us, because it was time to get back into the rowboat and row home.

To most people, noise pollution is a jet flying over their head. For one Spanish woman, it is a neighbor playing the piano. The woman has taken her neighbor to court. Now she wants to send her neighbor to prison for over seven years on the charges of psychological damage and noise pollution.
In a country known for its noisiness, the case has raised eyebrows. Neighbors often complain about street noise in Spain, but people seeking prison time for someone practicing the piano is unheard of. At the trial, Sonia Bosom says she has been suffering noise pollution up to now due to the practice sessions of Laia Martin, who lives below her. Martin, 27, didn’t admit that she played at home that often, saying she took regular classes in other towns and mostly practiced at home on the weekends.
On the first day of the trial, the newspaper reported that Bosom told the court she now hated pianos so much that she couldn’t even stand seeing them in a film.
Bosom says years of hearing constant playing has caused her “psychological injury”. Medical reports show she has suffered from a variety of problems, including insomnia (失眠), anxiety, and panic attacks.
She says tests by local authorities have found that the sound levels made by the piano are up to 10 decibels (分贝) higher than the limit. City authorities have asked the family several times to either stop the piano playing or soundproof (隔音) the room. The family told the court they carried out soundproofing work twice but the complaints continued.
The court hasn’t made a final decision. A spokeswoman says the trial will end before May.

Dear editor,
I am Evan from Canada. Being the oldest child in the family has its disadvantages. First of all, I have to share all my toys with my young sisters. Of course, they don't need to return to their favorites because I'm total uninterested in their things. Besides, they are always hanging around me. I just can't get moment's peace. At meals, I have to eat whichever is on the plate regardless of the taste. My sisters only try one bite if it's not our favorite food. In addition, when it comes to practice our musical instruments, I have to practice more than double the time. Worst of all, I got a larger quantity of housework. Comparing to them, I'm feeling rather annoyed. Can you please give me some advices?
Yours truly,
Evan Smith

In the early 1990s, Madan Kataria, an Indian doctor who worked in Mumbai, became interested in the growing body of scientific evidence showing that laughter is extremely beneficial to human health. He made a decision that more laughter was needed to improve health and deal with the stress of modern living.
In 1995, while writing an article for a health journal, Dr. Kataria discovered many modern scientific studies describing the benefits of laughter on the human mind and body. In particular, he was impressed by Norman Cousins’ book Anatomy of an Illness and the research work by Dr. Lee Berk. Then he began to field-test the effect of laughter on himself and others.
Starting with just five people, on March 13, 1995, at a public park in his neighborhood, Dr. Kataria started the first laughter club. They laughed together in the park to the amusement of bystanders, and the small group quickly grew to more than 50 people within a few days. In the early meetings, they stood in a circle with one person in the center to tell a joke or a funny story. Everybody enjoyed themselves and felt good for the rest of the day. However, after two weeks, their jokes and stories ran out. Some complained that it would be better to discontinue the club than to continue without any jokes. Dr. Kataria asked the club members to give him one day to develop a breakthrough that would solve the problem.
That night, Dr. Kataria reviewed his research and finally found the answer. Our body cannot differentiate between pretend and genuine laughter. In fact, both produced the same effect. The next morning, the results were amazing. For some, the make-believe laughter quickly turned into real laughter. Soon the group was laughing like never before. The hearty laughter that followed lasted for almost ten minutes. This was the birth of Laughter Yoga.

What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.
We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”
33. According to the context we can guess that a genius is ____ while an idiot is ____.
A. a normal person; a funny person
B. a strong person; a weak person
C. a highly intelligent person; a foolish or weak-minded person
D. a famous person; an ordinary person
34. It is better for parents ________.
A. to praise and encourage their children more often
B. to be hard on their children
C. to leave their children alone with nothing to do
D. to give their children as much help as possible
35. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?
A. Parents play an important part in their children’s growth.
B. The less you use your mind the duller you may become.
C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.
D. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion.

A. Having been addicted B. being addicted

In the countryside there are some children dropped out of school. The reasons of this are different. Some families are very poor to afford the education of their children. Some parents think useless for girls to attend school, so that their daughters lost the chance. Some children are unwilling to attend school for lack of interests in their studies. In my opinion, every child should have the chance to receive an education, whether boys and girls. Besides, the government should take effect measures to guarantee children’s right of education because we will play important roles in developing our country in the future.
