You don't have to understand the stock market to prove a country is having a difficult economic time. You have only to look at lipstick sales to see how big an economic downturn a country faces. Sales of make-up like lipstick go up when the economy is bad and go down when the economy improves. This is called the "Lipstick Effect."
The lipstick effect goes as far back as the Great Depression of the 1930s. During this time period many jobs were lost and many factories closed, but sales of cosmetics (化妆品) rose. In Germany, although many people lost jobs, the biggest cosmetic company did not need to sack a single worker. More recently in the USA, during the hard times of 1990 and 2001 more workers were needed in the cosmetic industry while other companies were cutting workers. And it was even said that, after the terrorist attacks of September 11, lipstick sales doubled!
Researchers have discovered that when times get hard and there is less money to spend on large, expensive products like new cars, designer shoes, or jewelry, women buy little things to improve their mood. Most of these things are cosmetics and the most popular one women buy is lipstick. A new color of lipstick can sometimes be enough to brighten a woman's mood. A similar thing happens when men shop during an economic slowdown. They have less money to spend but they still want to treat themselves, so they buy smaller, less costly goods instead of sports cars or new houses.

42. What would become of a big cosmetic company during the Great Depression?
A. They gave employees a special job. B. It functioned normally or even better.

43. During the economic slowdown, women consider lipstick as something that______.
A. is helpful in finding a job
B. can provide a big change to their look
C. is more necessary than any other goods
D. can give them great satisfaction at a low cost
44. Which best describes people's shopping habits during an economic slowdown?
A. They choose goods they value most. B. They shop at the second-hand market.
C. They buy cheap and cheerful products. D. They spend less money on small goods.
45. What's the best title for the text?
A. Lipsticks May Be an Economic Mirror.

Last Saturday I went to the library as usually. At about noon, I was enjoying my reading near a lake while suddenly I heard someone crying for help. I went up to see what was happen. I was shocking to find a little child struggling in the water in the distance while many people were standing by without doing anything. Without any hesitation, I had pushed through the crowd as I took off my coat but jumped into the water quickly. I managed to reach him and carry him back to safety. To his great relief, the kid saved.
I was proud of what I had done. I wish everyone can give a hand when someone else is in need.

My wife and I moved into our home two years ago. We had a yard with a lot of 41 . Very often when we have flowers, Denise or I would plant some between the rocks, just to add some __42__ to the area.
Last summer, I found a tiny little 43 in the yard that I could not immediately identify. I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise said she didn’t either. We decided to let it 44 growing until we could find out what it was.

That’s when I 51 that if a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its 52 of developing, we too have the ability of doing the same thing. If we 53 ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we 54 to go and get what we need for growth.

When I first started university, I remembered hearing about bone marrow(骨髓)donation during Freshman’s Week. Some students volunteers from a group called Marrow tried to convince me to attend an event so I could learn more about it. The word “bone” immediately made me think that donating would be a painful procedure, so I refused. Back then, there was no way I could have known three years later, I would be one of the many people that desperately needs a bone marrow donor to save their lives.
I am currently waiting to be matched with a donor and if I am lucky enough to find a good match, it will be this lovely stranger that saves my life. I received my cancer diagnosis in June. It is only at that time that I realized how ignorant I had been about the bone marrow donation process.
The process of donating stem cells is actually very simple. In 90% of cases, donors are asked to donate their blood stem cells, the other 10% will give their bone marrow. Lots of donors say that both these things are virtually pain free, and nothing to be scared about. Being a bone marrow donor should be something to be proud of, as every donor has an opportunity to save someone’s life!
At the moment I know that the doctors are busy searching for a match, I simply live every day in the hope that there will be a donor right for me. If I have an opportunity for life, I won’t waste it.
When I was a first year at university, I made the mistake of walking away from becoming a stem cell donor. Please don’t make the same mistake that I did. There are so many people out there, including myself, that need your help; and by undergoing a simple, pain-free procedure, you could have the chance to proudly say that you saved someone’s life.

I’ve always had strong opinions of how love should be expressed, but others had their own ways of showing care.
What I 41 most about visiting my boyfriend’s parents is the loud tick of the clock in the dining room as we42 ate our meal. With so little conversation I was quick to43 his family as cold. When we got into the 44 to go home, his father suddenly appeared.45 , he began to wash his son’s windscreen. I could feel he is a caring man through the glass.
I learned another lesson about love a few years later. My father often 46 me early in the morning. “Buy Xerox. It’s a good sharp price,” he might say when I answered the phone. No pleasant 47 or inquiry about my life
, just financial instructions. This manner of his 48 me and we often quarreled. But one day, I thought about my father’s success in business and realized that his concern for my financial security lay behind his 49 morning calls. The next time he called and told me to buy a stock, I 50 him.
When my social style has conflicted with that of my friends, I’ve often felt 51 . For example, I always return phone calls52 and regularly contact my friends. I expect the same from them. I had one friend who rarely called, answering my messages with short e-mails. I rushed to the53 : She wasn’t a good friend. My anger54 as the holidays approached. But then she came to a gathering I 55 and handed me a beautiful dress I had fallen in love with when we did some window-shopping the previous month. I was56 at her thoughtfulness, and regretful for how I’d considered her to be 57 . Clearly I needed to change my expectations of friends.
Far too often, I ignored their 58 expressions, eagerly expecting them to do things in my 59 . Over the years, however, I’ve learned to 60 other persons’ love signs.

You might take a car, a bus, or a bike to school. But in Bangladesh, instead of waiting for a school bus to come down their street, many students wait for a school boat to come down the river. That’s right—these students attend school on a boat!
Bangladesh is very close to sea level.______36______ The flooding creates many problems. For the nearly 160 million people living there, the periodic flooding means that they are often unable to access roads, electricity, or telephones.

The only difference was that they floated on a river.
______38______ Today Rezwan and his organization operate 88 boats in northern Bangladesh. About half the boats are used as schools, and the other half are used as temporary houses during the flood season. In addition to the schools and the temporary housing, there are also a floating technology and training center, a library that allows students to check out books, and a health-care center. The school boats travel along the rivers and pick up students for classes that include computer technology, agriculture, and human rights.
At night the boats provide additional learning opportunities for students and adults. ______39______ They study using solar lamps that are charged during the day at stations near the river. Special equipment on the boats also projects lessons onto big screens made from sail cloth. People can come down to the river bank to watch films. In all, these boats help educate close to 90,000 families in Bangladesh.
By floating down the rivers, the school boats provide more than books. ______40______ “This ‘library’ boat inspired me,” said 18-year-old student Shanto Islam, who enjoys reading science fiction books. “I started to dream.” Islam now wants to attend a university.

A mouse happened to look through a hole in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. “What food might this contain?” The mouse wondered. But he was sad to discover it was a mousetrap.
Back to the farmyard, the mouse announced this warning: “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mouse trap in the house!”
The hen clucked(咯咯地叫)and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr.Mouse, I can tell this is a great concern to you,but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.”

Throughout my 41 years at General Electric, I've experienced a lot.In the media, I've gone from prince to pig and back again. And I've been called many things.
In the early days, some called me a crazy, wild man. When I became CEO two decades ago, Wall Street asked, "Jack who?"
When I tried to make GE more competitive by cutting back our workforce in the early 1980s, the media called me "Neutron Jack." When they learned we were focused on values and culture at GE, people asked if "Jack has gone soft. " I've been No.1 or No.2 Jack, Services Jack, Global Jack, and, in more recent years.Six Sigma Jack and e-Business Jack.
When we made an effort to acquire Honeywell in October 2000, and I agreed to stay on through the transition (过渡期) , some thought of me as the Long-in-the-Tooth Jack hanging on by his fingertips to his CEO job.
Those characterizations said less about me and a lot more about the stage our company went through.Truth is, down deep, I've never really changed much from the boy my mother raised in Salem, Massachusetts.
When I started on this journey in 1981 , standing before Wall Street analysts for the first time at New York's Pierre Hotel, I said I wanted GE to become " the most competitive enterprise on earth." My objective was to put a small-company spirit in a big-company body, to build an organization out of an old-line industrial company that would be more high-spirited, more adaptable, and more flexible than companies that are one-fiftieth our size.I said then that I wanted to create a company " where people dare to try new things, where people know that only the limits of their creativity and drive, their own standards of personal excellence, will be the ceiling on how far and how fast they move."
I've put my mind, my heart, and my courage into that journey every day of the 40-plus years I've been lucky enough to be a part of GE.
59.According to the first two paragraphs, the author _________.
A.became CEO of GE 41 years ago.
B.had a poor image in public.
C.had many ups and downs.
