Yang Li, a five-year-old girl living next door to me, very clever. Because she is not old enough to go to the school, she often asks me to teach herself to read, write and draw. She studies hardly and soon she learns a lot. One evening last month I was doing my English homeworks when she came to my house. She asked me how I learned English. “You would find English a bridge for so many knowledge,” I said. She then wanted to learn English, either. She has learned many English words so far but her parents are very grateful to me.

I am from Indonesia. I was very happy when my sister Vera 41 helped me apply to a school in Provo, USA. Meanwhile, I felt 42 , because it was my first time to go to another country which used a different language. However, I knew it was a good 43 to study in the U.S.

I left my hometown for Singapore on April 23, 2000 at 6:00 pm. It took me 20 minutes by taxi to Changi Airport. The taxi driver 44 me about the cost. I was supposed to pay him $12, but he charged me $22. I had already 45 that at that time, but I didn’t want to make any 46 because I was alone in another country.

Unfortunately, the Northwest Airlines counter (柜台)was 47 . A security guard told me the counter would open at 4 o’clock in the morning, but my 48 time would be 6:00 am and what made me 49 was that I didn’t have a ticket in my hands. 50 , my sister had already booked an online ticket, but I needed to get the 51 at the airline counter. 52 , I could do nothing about that until the next day. Waiting at the airport was so 53 . So I went into a cafeteria. I stayed up the whole night 54 the aircraft would be gone when I 55

While waiting, I decided to take some pictures for 56 . I met a new friend named AL Corpus there. He told me about his experience when he arrived in the U.S. for the first time. He 57 me what I would need to do to enter the United States. He was very 58 and friendly.

Finally, I arrived in Provo 59 . Now whenever I think of the trip, I feel happy because I had many unforgettable 60 on my trip to Provo.

LONDON—Manchester is Britain’s fattest city, a survey for “Men’s Health” has found, beating Glasgow for the first time since the magazine started examining the issue three years ago.

Editor Pete Muir said the survey had looked at a variety of factors(因素) from gym membership to heart disease rates to find the fattest city. “Manchester has more fast food restaurants than anywhere else in the UK,” he told Reuters. “People are taking the easy choice —eating and then just sitting in front of the TV.”

Manchester’s problem is part of a wider trend(趋势). On Thursday, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) blamed(责备) a lack of exercise and poor diet for a fifth of adult Britons being obese(过度肥胖的). “Obesity is a major risky factor related to heart disease, diabetes and premature death(糖尿病和早亡),” said an ONS survey. “None of the 108 young men in the survey reported eating five portions of fruit or vegetables on average each day.”

In Manchester, the head of the city’s public health programs said he did not believe that they were necessarily the fattest city, but that they did have problems and were aiming to address them. Social deprivation(贫困) was a major factor. “One of the myths is that the stressed-out(压力大的) rich businessman is the one who is overweight,” David Regan told Reuters. “In fact, it is the poor areas that have the most problems. We aim not to be the fattest but the fittest city but we have a long way to go.”

Second in the survey is Stoke-on-Trent, followed by Liverpool, Swansea and Leicester. Glasgow is sixth.

32. Manchester took the place of ____________ and became Britain’s fattest city.

A. Liverpool    B. London    C. Stoke-on-Trent    D. Glasgow

33. Obesity may lead to the following EXCEPT _______________.

A. heart disease  B. diabetes   C. premature death    D. a lack of exercise

A. the reporter from Reuters

B. an official of ONS

C. the head of Manchester’s public health programs

D. a rich businessman who is overweight

Two dresses look similar _____ each other , but they differ _____ material

  A. to; in            B. with; from               C. to ; from                 D. from; in

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of areas for burying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

55. What does the underlined phrase “over-consumption” refer to?

A. Using too much packaging.                     B. Having more material than is needed.

C. Making more products than necessary.      D. Recycling too many wastes.

56. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show _________.

A. the tendency of cutting household waste   B. the increase of packaging recycling

C. the rapid growth of super markets            D. the fact of packaging overuse

57. According to the text, recycling_________.

A. is the solution to gas shortage                   B. means burning packaging for energy

C. helps control the greenhouse effect          D. leads to a waste of land

58. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult.              B. Needless material is mostly recycled.

C. People like collecting recyclable waste.      D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.

With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it's not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in the dump, makes me feel good and warms my heart.

How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(礼貌)to speak to others that are around you.

I know of a few people that don't have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?

Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to ignore the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.

32. From the second paragraph, we can know that________

A. the writer is funny and polite

B. the writer's grandma is humorous

C. family members should play tricks on each other

D. we should relieve stress in any situation

33. The phrase “busting a gut” in the third paragraph can be replaced by________

A. laughing hard              B. explaining carefully

C. speaking loud              D. keeping silent

34. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to________

A. talk about his own understanding of humor

B. introduce a practical way to get through daily life

C. encourage people to be humorous in daily life

D. convince people of the power of being optimistic about life

35. What is the author's attitude towards the present world?

During the summer vacation, I often got up at 6:00 and take a walk in the garden for half an hour. After breakfast, I began reading English books and did some exercise in maths, what took me several hours. I worked quite hardly and made a good progress. I went to swim in the afternoon. I did go home until it was about five or six o’clock. Sometimes a friend of me would come to see me and we would spend some time listen to music. I spent my vacation happily by this way. I not only improved my studies rapid but also became a good swimmer.

A new book called Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua has caused a debate (争论) about cultural differences in parenting. Amy Chua is a teacher in an American university and both of her parents are Chinese. In the book, Ms. Chua writes about how she taught her daughters. She told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters were not allowed to do, such as having a play date, watching TV or playing computer games and getting any grade less than an A.

Many people are against Amy Chuas parenting style (风格), even her husband, who is American. They say it is rude and unfair to children. But she says her parents raised her and her three sisters in that way.

Ms. Chua says after her younger daughter shouted I hate my life! I hate you! she decided to retreat because she was afraid of losing her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their childrens abilities.

The debate is about what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child, said Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books on parenting. She says Amy Chuas parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. It is a traditional way of parenting among immigrants (移民). They hope to get a better future for their children.

She also sees a risk (风险). When children have no time to be social or to develop their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised.

21Which of the following words can best describe Amy Chua?

A. Polite.          B. Cruel.           C. Strict.          D. Popular.

22The underlined word retreat in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _____.

23According to Ms. DeBroff, _____.

A. Amy Chuas parenting style should be forbidden

B. Americans should learn from Amy Chua

C. parents should have their own parenting style

D. Amy Chuas style is bad for childrens growth

24In which part of a newspaper can you read the passage?

The importance of liking people is the subject of an article in the Harvard Business Review, which has carried out an experiment to find out who we’d rather work with. Hardly surprisingly, the people we want most as our workmates are both: brilliant at their jobs and delightful human beings. And the people we want least are both unpleasant and useless. More interestingly, the

authors found that, given the choice between working with lovable fools and

competent jerks

(性情古怪的人),  we irresistibly choose the former. Anyway, who likes those stupid men who

annoy or hurt other people? We might insist that competence matters more, but our behavior

shows we stay close to the people we like and sharing information with them.

What companies should therefore do is to get people to like each other more. The trick here is apparently to make sure staffs come across each other as often as possible during the day.They

also should  be  sent on  bonding courses and so on to encourage friendliness and break down

displeasure. However, more outdoor-activity weekends and shared coffee machines inspire no

confidence at all.

The reality is that people either like each other or they don’t. You can’t force it. Possibly

you can make offices friendlier by tolerating a lot of chat, but there is a productivity cost to that. In my experience, the question of lovable fool against competent jerk may not be the right one. The two are interrelated: we tend not to like our workmates when they are completely hopeless. I was once quite friendly with a woman whom I later worked with. I found her to be so

bad at her job that I lost respect for her and ended up not really liking her at all. Then is there

anything that companies should be doing about it?

By far the most effective strategy would be to hire people who are all pretty much the same, given that similarity is one of the main determinant of whether we like each other. I think this is a preety good idea, but no one dares recommend this anymore . There is only one acceptable

view on this subject: teams of similar people are bad because they stop creativity. This may be

true, though I have never seen any conclusive proof of it.

Not only do we like similar people, we like people who like us. So if companies want to

promote more liking, they should encourage a culture where we are all niceto each other. The

trouble is that this needs to be done with some skill.

12. According to the research, which kind of colleagues would most people tend to choose?

A. Nice but unintelligent              B. Creative but unattractive.

C. Competent but unfriendly.           D. Humorous but unambitious.

13. The author talks about her experience to show that      .

A. people respect outstanding leaders

B. people tend to like optimistic workmates

C. a workmate’s working ability is important

D. talkative workmates make offices friendlier
